  1. This enthusiastically recommended Heloise household tip guide is devoted entirely to smells and stains, providing a handy A-Z dictionary organized by type of smell or stain. From soaking stained clothes to cleaning up after a flood, Conquers Stinks And Stains covers both large and small problems.

  1. Although this book was written well enough, with a catchy, accessible tone, I was disappointed by how little of it related to organization. I'd been expecting a volume that would offer me good, concrete hints on organizing the clutter in my house and office. And indeed, "Get Organized with Heloise" starts out that way, but quickly veers off course. Hints for finding a mover? Taking your pet to the vet? Throwing a party? All useful I'm sure, but what do they have to do with organization?

I haven't read one of Heloise's books before, so for all I know this grab-bag approach may be her preferred format, and maybe it's a format her loyal readers enjoy. But for me this book didn't provide the organizational tips it advertised. The final mark of its weakness is that after only finishing it a couple of days ago I can only remember two suggestions made in this book, one of which is useful to me ("five minutes or five things") and the other of which is not (color-coding your pantry). I'd hoped for much more.

  2. I love shopping on Amazon, they ship fast, and the selection is great....I would recommend this book and everything I purchased from
    Amazon, excellent, BB from Michigan

  1. If all you got from this book was a single useful fact to help you decide on one carpet/flooring installation, then you've paid for the book - perhaps many times over.

But if you only got one useful fact - then you're still on page one.

I manage apartments for a living. Replacing carpets & flooring is an expensive part of apartment turnover. No matter how many times I've done it, I still feel like flooring salespeople are like used-car dealers. They'll tell me whatever I want to hear for the product at whatever price I'm able to pay.

I wish I had a flooring expert by my side. Now, I do (in a way). This book is written in a very comfortable, casual style. It's almost as if the author is standing there tutoring you on all the aspects of flooring. He has a real understanding of the cost/benefit of different flooring materials and he understands the sensitivities of apartment management.

It's chock-full of tidbits of useful information, tips & tricks. I don't remember it all yet - but next time I have to buy flooring material, I'm going to re-read the important sections and go to my dealer a lot more prepared to understand what it is I'm buying - and to save money doing it!

It's not only useful - it's an easy read. Clearly the author knows his stuff and is able to present it without making me feel like I'm a dummy.

    Highly Recommended.

  2. Thanks a zillion times for finally coming up with something I can use. It's simple, easly to follow, and concise. This guy knows his stuff. I recommend this book to any landlord who needs to save time and money and significant amounts of it. BRAVO Mr. Fletcher.

  3. I know the author very well, his know how is of the highest quality,he knows his stuff!!Im sure that all who read this book will be blessed.

  1. For those of us who are green at heart but are unclear about how to translate that into action at home, this book is a must. In clear and simple strategies, the author encourages taking stock of a variety of day-to-day practices, such a house cleaning, personal hygiene and lawn and garden care and making the commitment to small changes that respect the natural world and our place in it. I highly recommend this book and it
is priced so that it is an easy and thoughtful gift to give to friends who want to join in the effort to live more in harmony with mother earth!

  2. My wife has always been interested in using natural cleaners and remedies. I "bought into" some of it, but after our daughter was born, this book became an important road map for keeping my family as healthy as I could. It's pretty easy (and fun) to keep your home just as clean as you would with store bought items. One other thing about this book is that it's addictive! Once you try one or two alternatives, you'll want to try them all.

Overall, if you have an interest in making your home a more green and healthy home, then this book serves as a great guide. The author presents the information in a clear and concise way that's easy to reference at any time. Enjoy it!

5 comments about The Zen of Organizing.
  1. The author notes that most of her clients have assistants and/or housekeepers. I have neither, but am my own in both cases. I did find the book inspirational, though not a read from cover to cover. I'm flipping through several organizational/clutter buster books at one time.

  2. I expected more from this book. I was looking for some great organizing tips, but there was nothing new in this book that I haven't read elsewhere before. Many of the tips (and the zen philosophy on being organized) could be found for free on the internet. If you're new to organizing or not very organized at all, this book may help you. If you're pretty organized to start with, you won't find anything special.

  3. Yes, I need to organize my office - but I also need to organize my books, my closet, the pantry shelves, and the cat's toys. I am cognizant of the deep psychological implications of constant clutter, but I would prefer to get my space organized before I meditate on that aspect of the disarray. And I totally agree with the reviewer's comment about overpriced dinner parties. Let's get real! No `housewives, corporate execs and business people' I know would fritter that amount of money on dinner, nor do I consider movie stars or producers to be realistic role models for organized living.

For me, this book neither confronted nor eased the painful step-by-creaking step journey of sifting your precious possessions, only to come to the realization that what you have been keeping is not a `memento' but an anchor to your past and a hindrance to your progress. Far from her desire to bridge the gap between Thomas Moore and Suze Orman, she made the environment more confusing. This book is neither `Zen' nor `die-hard' organizing; it's more like `Reality TV'.

Although some people doubt the authenticity of Feng Shui, it has been an essential planning tool in the Far East for thousands of years - chicanery cannot survive that long! A fundamental precept is that one must be organized, uncluttered, to succeed in life. A FAR better anti-clutter book is 'Move Your Stuff, Change Your Life' by Karen Rauch Carter. It does lack an index, but her ideas are much more concrete and, no, you do not have to paint your front door purple.

For an introspective, esoteric view of clutter, read 'Clear Your Clutter With Feng Shui' or `Creating Sacred Space With Feng Shui', both by Karen Kingston. Although it is not an instruction book on organization, `Sacred Space' by Denise Linn also confronts on the deep-seated malaise of clutter.

  4. I bought this book because I am always looking for hints to help me help my ADHD husband become more organized. This book was more about Regina Leeds than about organizing. And she characterized those with ADD/ADHD as "lazy" which demonstrated her enormous ignorance. I tossed it into the recycling bin.

  5. I have been so excited about Regina Leeds books. The first one I read was "The Zen of Organizing". After reading her first book, I had to find her other books. She is sensational.

BTW, I believe her newest book, "One YEar to an Organized Life," is the best of all and really motivates one to be on the mark and ready to go toward an organized life.

I am really going to be refined in this new organized life by the end of this year!!!

    Susan L. Curtin

  1. This is a wonderful book for anyone who hates housework and/or just doesn't have the time. I'm only half way through the book, but so far I've enjoyed everything! I especially love the portion where she states (and quotes others) that the immaculate homes that we see in the 'House Beautiful'-type magazines are not a reflection of normal people who have busy lives! Also enjoyed the chapter on getting the big ones and little ones in the household to do housework as a team. I am currently reading a library copy, but want / will get one of my own!

  2. This is a great book if you are planning to move, build a new home or purchase new furniture. It gives hints on everything to the type of flooring that is easiest to keep clean to which furniture would be best to stay looking nice with little upkeep. Also good for ideas on how to organize and keep clutter to a minimum as to spend less time doing housework. I read it cover to cover and used a highlighter on points to refer back to. I loved this book so much that as a real estate agent, I give this to clients before they move and they have all loved it too!

  1. As befits a book in the "Complete Idiot's Guide" series, the book is written in a simple format, with lots of line drawings and a lite view of the process. It is also very complete, lightly touching on just about everything to do with the process of moving. What was missing, I thought, was much help on the emotional adjustment side of moving, especially moving with children. It would be fine for singles or couples who want a fast, upbeat description of what all needs to be covered in a household move. The book appears perfect for a cartoon character I remember from the sixties: "Get-out-of-Town-before-Sundown Brown."

  2. My relative passed away (out of town) and we weren't sure which way to go. Should we hire a mover or rent a U-haul? Found this book for $6.00 at an outlet store. Best $6.00 I ever spent.

It explains how to determine if you should hire a professional mover, or do it yourself. Gives a breakdown of how many rooms of stuff you have vs how big a truck you should rent. (Too big a truck and your stuff is floating all over the place.) Also details how to pack the truck, , how to hire, what kinds of packing materials to use, what else you need to do before you pack it. The list goes on and on. Includes a checklist of things to do before you go and when you arrive, plus plenty of resources for packing materials.
