5 comments about Finish Carpentry: Custom Techniques.
- Although the book has a lot of pictures (none in color), It is very comprenhensive. It covers diverse issues usually found in separate books:
Closets, bookshelves, hanging doors and windows, fireplace mantels, curved woodwork, etc.All the chapters detail very well every project in a professional way: professional tools and methods to accomplish taks efficiently and economicaly. Do not expect a boring book to explain how to use every single tool or a buying guide. This books goes directly to the target. Great book to combine with other of the Taunton's books of the series "Build Like a Pro" or the "Traditional Woodwork : Adding Authentic Period Details to Any Home" of Mario Rodriguez. The missing star is because of the lack of pictures in color.
- I'm a DIY'er who's tackled projects ranging from electrical to roofing to tile. My experience with finish carpentry was pretty much limited to base molding and the replacement of doors and their casing. I recently purchased a new home, and while walking through various model homes, I really fell in love with the finish carpentry upgrades such as crown molding, coffered ceilings and library-paneled walls. The problem with buying those types of upgrades from a home builder (or from a contractor) is the exorbitant cost. I initially bought this book in the hopes it would get me comfortable in installing crown moulding in a couple of rooms in my new home, but the more time I spend reading it, the more confident I feel in attempting projcets that are much more complex - and rewarding. Crown will now be in the rooms with the LEAST amount of treatment. This book contains many pictures and diagrams that, combined with the text, serve to really simplify the steps for a wide range of projects. The book also includes many tips that help people like me avoid angst and marital problems (like when and when not to use MDF, how to compensate for shoddy construction, etc). The best part is if I don't quite understand something the first time, I can read it again and again until it finally clicks. I've gone from looking at ornate projects and guessing how they were done to KNOWING how they were done, and being confident enough to attempt them myself.
- This book shows it all. If you are a carpenter, or want to be one, this book will show you in exhaustive detail how to do finish work. I can say that the tricks learned in this gem of a book have really benefited me, and increased my living as a carpenter. A must have.
- If there is a textbook for finish carpentry this is it and Gary Katz is the professor. If its not in here you can generalize the techniques in the book to figure out how to do it. I wish I could apprentice for Gary Katz. OOOOHHHH hes my idol.
- The illustrations are of poor quality black and white, not color, and hard to make out most of the time. The information presented in this book is common carpentry knowledge, nothing new or groundbreaking here. Definitely not worth the cover price of $34.95.

5 comments about Woodworking With the Router: Professional Router Techniques and Jigs Any Woodworker Can Use.
- Excellent coverage of basics of using a router and all types of jigs for special applications. There isn't likely to be any use of the router that is not covered in this book. Great illustrations sufficient to build any of the jigs described. There are 333 pages that are concise - no wasted verbage - and yet enough explanation not to leave a novice confused. This one book is better than the two I had from Patrick Spielman, "The New Router Handbook" and "Router Jigs and Techniques". Recommended for anyone beginning to use a router.
- This is a great book on routers. It is a great soup to nuts book that covers usage, safety, bits, and jigs. For someone new to routers, this is an oustanding reference.
The reason I gave it four stars is because it is all in B&W. I am a B&W photographer (www.obrienphoto.com) but that doesn't mean that all things are suited for this medium. The photos are not half as good as they could be.
But not to fear -- in March of 2006 they are releasing a revised version of this book. I would hold of and get this one instead.

- Excellent reading for the beginning woodworker. I quickly read it through and have utilized the information to build a successfull box joint fixture. I'm sure I'll reference this book for a long time to come.
- If you are doing any wood work with a route this is something you should have. Shows hao to make jigs for your cuts, how to set your router completly and get the proper use from it.
- I cannot claim to know anything about routers or, consequently, working with them. However, my husband recently purchased a router and, having only watched others work with them, wanted some instruction. Based on excellent reviews and recommendations, I ordered Woodwork With Router for him. He LOVES it. He says it's easy to understand and explains everything in simple terms. He is currently planning his first router project, and it is thanks to Bill Hylton and this book!

- I found this book to be informative. It was written and printed in the UK, so the language is different in some respects, but it is a good book.

5 comments about Finish Carpenter's Manual.
- This book is a great recource for professional finish carpenters learning the trade. Step by step instructions help simplify common finish carpentry tasks, each section contains a list of man-hours per job to aid in bidding and the book lay out is very friendly.
- The "Finish Carpenter's Manual" is for any carpenter from apprentice to experienced journeyman that wants to keep up-to-date in the field of finish work from prep work to installation.
The "Finish Carpenter's Manual" is a rare find, and deserves Amazon's highest rating of 5 Stars.
- The author had some really good advises, but tried to cover too much in a small book. I suppose if you already knew the "basics", then you would find this book helpful.
- I was expecting more detail and less overview. My fault for not researching it more before buying. The book feels dated and needs an update.
- Don't let the cover fool you. This volume is dated in style and content. About 65% of it needs to be updated or written more effectively. The writer's original intent was good but not totally achieved. Passing years have eroded that mediocrity. An expanded revision could produce a solid classic, instead of an aging, overpriced tomb.

1 comments about Biscuit Joinery: Build a Bookcase with Frank Klausz (Fine Woodworking DVD Workshop).
- In this 76 minute video, Frank Klausz demonstrates building a knock down plywood bookcase using biscuit joinery, from raw stock, through edge banding, to finishing. His use of the biscuit jointer will be refreshingly new if you've only seen how Norm uses it. The design is simple and efficient, yielding one bookcase with 4 shelves from a single sheet of 3/4" plywood and a 1/4" back sheet. You'll need additional material for two more shelves to finish out the project. The knock down construction, using biscuits to aid alignment is a nice feature and an uncomplicated enhancement. The contruction and techniques demonstrated are easily applied to cabinets and carcases in general, which he also discusses briefly.

2 comments about Hand Tool Classics Slipcase Set: The Handplane Book and Classic Hand Tools.
- For the woodworker looking to expand his/her knowledge of planes, how they work, the history, good planes vs bad, how to tune and restore them, this is the book. Lots of illustrations, well written...would highly recommend
- I recently met Garrett Hack while taking a two day private lessson from him and having been to his home, seeing his workshop and using some of his tools, it was truly inspirational. I bought this book set after the trip and have learned soo much. Many of the things he teaches in the Handplane book not only teach you what is needed to understand and master the handplane, but also helps you understand how to be a better woodworker and craftsman. Also, these books are loaded with excellent pictures and illustrations of tools and woodworking techniques. I highly recommend buying this book set as you will be motivated and enabled to use your tools and produce better end products.
