2 comments about International Residential Code 2000: For One-And Two-Family Dwellings (International Residential Code).
  1. The new International Residential Code, (IRC), promises to be an extremly user friendly building code for houses. It has all of the aspects of construction including construction, plumbing, electrical, mechanical and even energy codes combined into one easy to use format. There are sketches galore! For those used to dealing with the previous model codes, this code will exceed your expectations for its user-friendly nature. There are some changes to building code requirements to which inspectors and builders are accostomed. The separation between the house and garage is limited to a single layer of 1/2" drywall. The alternative building material such as ICF (insulated concrete form) wall systems and ISP (insulated structural panels) are now inside the conventional aspects of the code. Certain shear wall provisions have changed. Footing design can now rely on an assumed 1500 psf minimum soil bearing pressure. But there are other problems. The seismic map has been hinged to the postal zip code and consequently, several different seismic zones are within a single community. Other problems will certainly be resolved by the code body in the years to come. As ever, changes are slow, but local jurisdictions will surely allow for these changes locally This Item is available at$47 & $55 and I don't know the difference.

  2. Book was ordered due to recent inspection requirements in Texas for home building construction. The book is the reference guide against which all inspections will be conducted. In that regard, the book is invaluable to any residential building contractor.

  1. I am new to wood turning of bowls and found these books very useful in guiding me through the necessary steps.

  2. "FANTASTIC" !!!!!!! Great for beginer and experienced woodworker. Covers everthing you have to know or would want to know.

  3. The three volume work is well done and was written by one who knows his subject. He approaches each topic with an organized process and was easy to follow, even for a beginner, which I am. I have just finished the first two volumes with one to go. I like the way he works in his cautions about turning ,with humor and not preaching. I know I'll re read sections a second and third time as the need arises. The work is complete and much more than I expected. Happy I made the purchase.

  4. These books provide a very thorough and well-written guide to turning just about anything. They include detailed examples, and wonderfully clear color photographs and illustrations. If you are looking for some help buying a lathe, choosing tools, sharpening, selecting wood blanks, making and practicing cuts - this is the boxette for you. If you are a more experienced turner looking for some advanced techniques, design elements, marketing ideas - this is the boxette for you. Here is the deal: you don't know me from Adam, and never will. Furthermore, you have no evidence of my woodturning book critic qualifications. But if you are looking for a complete guide to woodturning you should get this set of books. Enjoy!

  5. This is a great set of books for the beginner or someone with experience. I have a modest amount of experience but Ive now learned optional techniques and have increased my final products beauty. These books cover everything you need to turn wonderful projects.

2 comments about Decks & Patios for Dummies.
  1. My husband is a construction type but I'm not and the deck was my project to plan. This book was great! I looked at a couple of dozen deck books and this was the only one that explained how to build a deck in a way that my contruction-impaired mind could comprehend. Very specific, step by step building instructions, a thorough review of the planning process and wonderful ideas for extra features. My only wishes are more photograhs and more information on alternative decking materials.

  2. This is a great book for someone thinking about building a deck or patio cover. I'm pretty good around the house with tools and backyard projects, but there are some great tricks in this book that I didn't know. I would recommend this book for those who need a little added confidence to take on a deck or patio project.

  1. First, the book comes with an Errata Sheet for all of the answers that are incorrect in the book. Second, I'm going through this book and second guessing myself on answers, having to go pull resources, because there are even more incorrect answers. They should have gotten it together on the first pass or at least made sure the second pass was correct. You will not master anything by reading this book. Each section is totally lacking in information about the subject matter. The only way that this book can be used as a study guide is by using the questions that are in it and looking up the answers on your own because you can't trust the book. It was a waste of money. I would have rather paid $100 for a good book than the $30 I wasted on this one.

2 comments about Dewalt Electrical Code Reference with 2008 Code Changes.
  1. This is by far the best electrical quick reference I have ever seen. This book contains easy to understand, full color drawings; not schematics. It has everything you need to make sure your project is code compliant. GREAT for the Do-It-Yourself electrician! It is primarily geared toward Residential. The spiral binding makes it easy for reference while working. Also the pages are water resistant!
As an electrician, I have used other quick references like "UGLY's", but this one takes the cake!!

  2. This book is ok, for residential only, it definitely leaves out alot of useful details that would be expected at the end of the sentence but it falls short and is vague. As far as commercial or industrial this book is completely useless. Buy an UGLY'S, take a class to learn formula, and become a real electrician. This book is strictly homeowner and just enough to get someone in trouble.

  1. In 1996 this was MIT's textbook for its introductory undergraduate steel design class (1.51). This text did touch on the most basic topics. However, I have been practicing structural engineering since 1998, and I cannot recall ever having found the answer to a question within its pages. I don't know that a better introductory text exists, but it's clear that the treatment of the subject is superior in the AISC Manual of Steel Construction itself. Have your students purchase the manual, but skip this text.
