  1. I love this TV. No issues with it at all so far. I am not sure if the 120Hz technology is full matured yet. I think the other model without the 120HZ is just fine. The reason I bought this is because the 120Hz model was discounted at a similar price to the model without the 120Hz.

  2. I've had my eye on the Sony 40" XBR4 since January. The prices have been all over place and lately have been much higher than when I first started shopping around online. I went to Best Buy to check to do a visual comparison of the XBR4 vs 4071. I was impressed with the image quality of the 4071, so I placed my order here on Amazon. A couple of days later, I noticed that I had not taken advantage of the free Samsung Upconverting DVD player, so I called customer service and after a 15-min conversation, a free DVD player was on its way to me. I hope to purchase a blu-ray player in June!

Both products arrived within two weeks. The CEVA delivery guys were very friendly and set up my TV and attached directly to the cable. Within a few minutes, I had lots and lots of channels, many of them HD. I was very happy with the picture quality. I went out and rented a few videos and the DVD player worked great. Well, I had a dinner party this past Monday night. I decided to put an MP3 CD into the DVD player (which I'd done before and it worked great). The music had been playing for about 3 hours and one of my guests wanted to see the picture quality of the TV, so I picked up the TV remote and pressed the "source" button. The TV channel displayed for a few minutes and then the TV went black.

We went through the troubleshooting procedures in the instruction book with no luck. After my guests left, I unplugged everything and I tried to get the TV to come back on. There was power to the TV because the blue light was glowing, but all I got was a clicking sound and red flashing lights on the lower right indicator panel. I did some research on the web and I think there is a problem with the power panel. I called Amazon the next afternoon. They directed me back to Samsung. The Samsung person told me that because I purchased the TV online, they would not service it and she directed me back to Amazon. So, I called Amazon and the agent apologized for the problem and said customer service was backed up and someone would call me the next morning. Well, yesterday no one called me, however, when I checked my email this morning Amazon had already shipped me a new TV.

On the one hand, I'm thrilled that the problem is being resolved. On the other hand, I'm wondering about the power panel problem along with the Samsung DVD player. I had pressed the "source" button several times before the night of the dinner party and had no problem switching back and forth. Once my new TV arrives, I will update this review and hopefully give it 5 stars.

COMMENTS ABOUT THE TV: I like the favorites button on the remote but wish it could be more prominent. It's buried at the bottom of the remote with a bunch of other buttons. Sometimes the commercials seem louder than the programs even though I've turned the "volume control" on.

NOTE: Be sure to read about Amazon's Post-Order Price Guarantee in the HELP area. I check the price of this TV on a daily basis. To date, Amazon has issued 3 price guarantee refunds. I still have 8 days left -- unless they now honor the new ship date for the replacement TV. Requests must be made within 30 days of the item's shipment date. Overall, my customer service experience with Amazon has been excellent!

  3. My first HD TV. Very happy, the TV arrived early and was unpacked and tested in my house. The set hooked up easy using HDMI cables to my DVD and Dishnet SAT. Set up was easy and the picture is great. HD programs are the way to go, sooner that all TV is made in HD the better, find that we watch mainly HD programs. Have not found the need to change settings much, the factory ones seem fine. Sound is good but a full surround sytem would be a good upgrade.

  4. Family and friends told me I spent more time reviewing what HDTV LCD to buy than purchasing a car or a house. Ha, I thought --- I am getting a Samsung 4071 where 90+% of the reviewers are happy. I never thought I'd be one of the 10% to have the TV TOTALLY FAIL. No picture, ghosts, then grey screen.

I had been very happy despite the fact price went down more, newer models out - I had no complaints.

My big concern --- the threads and reviews I've read about Samsung's service, warranty and people having to wait 30 days or more to get a power or control panel. Time will tell and I'll update the review re that.

I got rid of a perfectly good, 10 year old 32" Sony only to upgrade to something that fails in 2 months. Pretty scary.

UPDATE: It is SUN 6/21 and I still don't have my tv... The Samsung outsourced repairman is local and has replaced several things - still not working. Has ordered supposedly the last two possible parts/display boards it can be and should be out here Monday. He says failure rate is 1-2% and that is considered good and that they fix them. He still endorses the product over other brands. While I recognize this is who is buttering his bread, Samsung service center and this repairman have been relatively responsive in phone calls, calling back, etc. To me this is a big portion of customer service. Will update if it ever gets working.

  5. I'm not sure how the quality is on this TV, but if you would like your TV in a resonable amount of time I would not buy it from Amazon. I ordered my TV on June 14th,it is now June 26th and I have still have not received it. I did track my item on CEVA and it has been sitting in a warehouse an hour from my house since June 21st. I would highly reccommend buying from a different company.

  1. Panasonic TC-32LX85 32-inch 720p LCD HDTV

I am very pleased with my recent purchase. Set up is simple. The remote is great. The picture is excellent. I can actually watch in broad daylight with the sun shining and there is no window reflections, shadows, etc. I have had friends who have HD service comment on what a nice picture and didn't believe when I told them I don't have HD service yet. I would highly recommend this product.

  2. I was really surprised at how good this TV is. The picture is perfect, no matter what kind of lighting is in the room, from full daylight to dim nighttime. It comes on quickly, and the automatic channel programming is just about flawless. The onscreen menu lets you control everything to set your preferences as desired. The HD programming (broadcast over the air) is just awesomely crisp and clear.

  3. I've been through 3 t.v.'s so far. The first t.v. I bought was my first HDTV ever but the picture was just not that good. I felt like it wasn't a good upgrade from SDTV. The second t.v. I bought had a really good HD picture and an acceptable SD picture, but no matter what I watched the picture was always dark for some reason even if I increased the brightness or contrast. That t.v. also lacked the inputs I needed for different things like my cable box, game systems, etc.

After deciding to give it one more shot, I stumbled upon this t.v. with it's great specs and many inputs. I have to say that this t.v. has excelled my expectations. From Standard definition channels to High definition channels, this t.v. is a winner. It is so bright even during the daytime (funny how others mentioned this too lol) and it has those inputs that I wanted. So far I've played my Xbox 360 on this t.v. and the picture cannot be beaten. The picture is so crisp and clear that it puts those other t.v.'s I had to shame. Oh and about the picture being dark, it can't be. I only have the settings on the "Game Mode" that this t.v. has and I can see every detail there is in the games. I haven't even brought up the brightness or contrast yet and there is no need for it! There is even an option in the menu to make dark scenes even more clear!

The sound on this t.v. is also good. I thought I had my surround sound speakers on when using the t.v. but I actually was using the t.v. speakers and yes they were that loud at a low volume setting. So here is how I sum it up:

    VIDEO: 10 out of 10
I have not yet been disappointed with the SD or HD picture of this t.v. Whites are white, blacks are black.

    AUDIO: 10 out of 10
If something ever happened to my surround sound speakers, I wouldn't care because it will be like they never broke.

    INPUTS: 9 out of 10
It's nice that they're 3 HDMI inputs but I wish there was a second component input. But since everything is going HDMI these days, this is not a problem.

    PRICE: 10 out of 10
I've seen this t.v. going for up to $899 but I bought it for $699. What a steal at this price.

    OVERALL: 10 out of 10
Finally I have found the t.v. that I have been looking for all this time. I had to wait until 2008 to get it, but it was definitely worth the wait. If you have been waiting to get an HDTV, then now is the time to get it. You won't be disappointed.

  4. Very good TV for the picture and set up. A good value. It has a very good tuner for changing channels .

  5. Bought this on Amazon several months ago now. It is my first LCD. I've owned Panasonic Plasma's for a few years. This set is great. Only complaint would be that blacks are not as good as on the Plasma's but over all very pleased. I have not seen any written reviews of this set yet and I would like to see some recommended settings. This was easy to set up. Very happy!

  1. I ordered this TV over a month ago and have been very satisfied since day one. I ordered from Amazon on a Friday and it arrived three days later on Monday. Setup was very easy and the built in tuner found 45 channels (about 15 are analog). We use a 30 year old antenna strapped to the chimney and the picture is great! I strongly recommend this TV to anyone looking for a small TV.

  2. Good Tv ideal, clear image and good resolution its ideal for small spaces like kitchen, rooms, etc. a lot of function and good price and good brand.

  3. I ordered this TV to take advantage of the HDTV channels available over Comcast Cable in the San Francisco Bay area, without having to rent Comcast's pricey cable box. It fills the bill perfectly.

Using the default settings, the picture is sharp and contrasty. There's plenty of sound volume. The screen hardly reflects light at all, which is nice since we have a lot of windows. The Natural picture size setting chooses the proper picture width all the time. (I've never figured out why some people view everything in full width, even if it adds 50 pounds to all the people on the screen.)

I got a scare when first hooking it up. I ordered it only after a Comcast agent verified that with the built-in QAM tuner it would receive HDTV just by plugging the cable signal into the antenna/cable coax jack. But when first turned on, it only received analog signals. Calling Comcast back, I was told that I would need a $7/month cable box. Fortunately this turned out to be baloney. While my wife was channel-flipping, she started getting HDTV stations too, and now it shows every analog and digital channel, even on my non-digital cable service plan. My wife claims full credit for "fixing" it. I suspect it took a while to lock into some aspect of the cable service. Who knows.

So here's two recommendations: Double check everything Comcast tells you. And buy this TV.

(Oh - and also see the reviews for the 19AV500U - it's the identical model in black.)

  4. Arrived on time, intact and working well.

Replaced an old 19" CRT clunker on which the remote was no longer functioning.

  5. I bought this Toshiba back in May & I am still very pleased with it. I have two other Toshiba sets and I have never had a minutes problem with them. This TV has a clean high contrast picture and the sound is not bad for a set this size. I like it well enough to give it 5 stars.

  1. This TV basically blew me away at the store. I was there to buy a 26" vizio or sharp aquos and ended up with a cheaper and much better Samsung T220HD. The picture, while smaller, was darker, clearer and crisper than the others and I felt like the better deal was this tv over the larger ones. I use this in the bedroom so the size was less of a concern but overall a great tv.

  1. I decide on the 46z4100S for the following reasons;

    a) No glossy screen glare or bezel glare!
    b) small bezel, allowing larger screen on wall space
    c) 3" depth on "in-wall mount"
    d) 1080P/120HZ/motion control

The Picture Quality is so crystal clear......... just great! Bright, vivid colors are awesome! There are so many features and very easy to set-up.

My wife loves the brushed metal and says, "it doesn't have glare, doesn't look like those 'black plastic' frames". She's candid(LOL) and loves the amazing PQ, when watching her baseball games.

I'm using an in-wall mount and the 3" depth makes it look like a picture on the wall. The "46Z" is perfect from a viewing distance of 9-11 ft. Friends all love it!

I'm still making the viewing adjustment from a 27"CRT floor console. My eyes do more tracking on this larger screen.

  1. A fair amount of research led me to this product and the Samsung's decision to discontinue the model (which drove down the price) made this a great deal. While I was aware of some of the judder issues, the excellent reviews made this one of the few HDTVs I considered. As I was already comfortable with the picture quality and options for all of the products on my list, the deal maker was the styling. I simply liked it better than any other. Now, with it mounted on the wall and hooked up to the home theater system, I'm enjoying it far more than when I scrutinized it at the store.

  2. I had done a lot of looking for a new TV, I wanted an LCD HDTV but didn't know enough. After reading up I found this one and when the price was right I jumped.
I had a little issue with the shipping, my new TV sat in the warehouse for 4 days while the status while the status was "Contacted for delivery" but I never heard anything. I had to lookup the shipper info and contact them myself. From there everything went smooth.
The TV looks amazing and I've had no issues so far, it's been about a month. I wish there were more component inputs but I knew that when purchasing.

  3. This is by far the nicest tv I have ever owned. It is big, bright, and has a beautiful image. I bought this model specifically for the 120hz Auto Motion Plus. It sounded like a great idea; smooth out the video by adding extra frames. The problem is it ends up making the picture look too good. It's like you are on-set with a videocamera, which pulls you out of the movie and kills the cinematic feel. For live shows like the news or sitcoms I keep the 120hz AMP on, but if I'm watching CSI or a movie I turn it off.

The other reason for buying this tv was to hook up a Home Theater PC. And I must say it is beautiful! Running 1920x1080, the fonts are crisp and readable. I could easily have several browser windows open side by side. I wish I could convince my wife to let me make this my primary desktop display.

DVDs played through VLC look noticeably better than ones played through my standalone DVD player. I assume VLC must be doing some sort of image scaling. Netflix Watch Now videos are not bad, roughly DVD quality. I'm sure once they start offering HD content, this tv will make them look great.

One minor annoyance with this tv is the remote. None of the codes worked for my Toshiba DVD player, and there were no codes at all for my Series 1 Tivo. The only thing it was able to control was my old Samsung VCR. It also lacks a useful feature that my old RCA tv/remote had: when you push one of the device buttons on the remote, it changed the the tv to the corresponding input. The LNT4671F seemed like it would be able to do this, it lets you label each input with what device is attached, but unfortunately it does not actually change the input for you. You have to manually flip through until you have the right one. Not that bad, just a nice touch that could have been added.

Over all I would definitely recommend this tv to anyone. Especially with the price Amazon was offering it for, you can't go wrong.

  4. Samsung is a well-respected brand and I had read reviews of this TV before I bought it. The TV has amazing picture quality. I have a PS3 hooked up to it and BluRay movies along with PS3 games, running in 1080p, look spectacular. The detail is superb and the color/contrast is great. As far as the sound quality goes, I don't really know since I have a home theater system. It has a lot of features and is, as far as I can tell, one of the best TVs for the money out there.

It isn't perfect, however. In my limited experience, the AutoMotion Plus (AMP), which is touted to smooth out the action and reduce blur, has not worked as Samsung claims. In movies it generally makes the slow moving scenes seem surreal and fast moving scenes more blurry. And for games, it seems to make it more choppy, even in Game Mode (which activates AMP). I made sure I have the most recent firmware, too. As I mentioned, I have very limited experience with using the AMP feature, so these issues may possibly be fixed by messing with settings. I mainly wanted 120Hz for the benefit of 5:5 pulldown to smooth out 24fps movies.

All in all, it is a great TV and, despite the AMP issues, it deserves 5 stars.

  5. I have had this TV for a couple of months now. I was trying to decided between this and the LN46A750. They were both the same price, but I wasn't too hot on the red border on this year's model. After doing some extensive research it all came down to this TV and the Sony XBR4. The XBR was more expensive, and seeing the two sets in the store there was no comparison. The Samsung has MUCH deeper blacks and better color and contrast. I think this may be partly due to the glossy finish on the Samsung's screen.

Speaking of which, this is one thing that I was worried about. I have a pretty bright room, and I was afraid that the glossy screen would be a problem. No worries, the only reflections you can see are those directly behind you.

This TV has plenty of inputs, although I only use about 2 (1 HDMI for my DVD player, 1 component for my HD Cable Box). I don't use any of the audio inputs anymore because of my surround sound, but when I did use the audio it seemed like the TV had decent sound. It was surprising the level of low-mid range sound the TV produced from such a small enclosure.

The AutoMotionPlus (AMP) feature is great! I tend to leave it on low, so I have never noticed any "jitter" that many reviewers have seen. I only (immediately) noticed the problem in the store when the TV was set on "high". I tried it at home, with the set on high, and did not notice anything. Samsung has (supposedly) released a firmware that fixed this problem, and I'm sure all of the new TVs ship with it. Still, I think it's overkill for me on high, and I found that the AMP on high (and sometimes medium) detracted from the viewing experience.

The black-levels on this TV are unmatched by any LCD I've ever seen. It doesn't quite match the levels of Pioneer's plasma line, but it can beat any LCD out there. The blacks are pretty incredible, even though there is a slight black crush.

I also use this TV on the VGA input with a Media Center PC that I built out of some old computer parts I had laying around. I can get 1080p resolution with some H.264 files doing this and truly see what the TV is capable of (because I don't have a Bluray player... yet). The image is outstanding. Clean, crisp, beautiful. Bright, bright whites. The detail is incredible on 1080p, and it looks MUCH better than Comcast's HD feed (which, by the way, is being recompressed on certain channels, search Google for "comcast recompress", first link for AVSForum). I just wish I could do AMP on the VGA input. Oh well, I'll eventually switch over to the HDMI input for my PC.

Lastly, the TV is pretty energy efficient for its size. Remember that when you get it, ALL the settings are cranked up to the max. You DON'T need it like this, and in fact it looks worse than if you tweak the settings. I tend to lower the brightness to 50%, and the backlight down to 3 or so. You may not be used to the slightly darker picture, so give yourself a couple of days with it. You get better detail and truer colors using this method, not to mention you basically cut power consumption in half.

    SUMMARY:
This TV is outstanding. For the price you can't beat the color, black- and white-levels, quality of manufacturing, number on inputs, and features. The set itself is beautiful, and the picture is amazing. Great job, Samsung!

  1. I just purchased this LCD monitor/TV. There have been several erroneous statements about the 1080p functionality across all the ports. The system definitely supports full 1080p on the DVI port and the HDMI ports so long as you have the appropriate cable and a sufficiently current computer / video card combination.

The screen quality is outstanding. While a bit too bright at times, text is easy to read and I can now use Word and Excel at 300%.

I could only get Mac/PC auto working over the headset jack using the DVI port. The HDMI ports expect you to have a HDMI connection that passes audio and video together.

Watching downloaded movies and iTunes video content is a bit pixilated because they are encoded as such low resolutions they don't scale well to the full 1080p resolution.

Games on the Vista PC are spectacular with the ATI 3870 PCIe video card. It handles the 1920x1080 resolution without difficulty. Company of Heroes displayed flawlessly.

This is an outstanding monitor that works equally well with business applications like PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Project and Visio and entertainment (movies, games).
    I highly recommend it
    Cheers,

  2. Purchased the T.V. a month ago. I am very picky when it comes to picture clarity. Let me say i have no complaints with this T.V. works perfectly with my PS3. I would recommend this T.V. to anyone.

  3. I shopped for the perfect TV to match with an XBox 360 and the room that I would be using both in. This SHARP gaming HDTV was that perfect match. And over the air HDTV with an indoor antenna is excellent.

  4. The television arrived promptly by the date promised and we had it installed in our RV. It is very sleek and has an outstanding picture. We are very pleased with our purchase.

  5. I had to return my tv- it was dead when it arrived. when i phoned sharp, they said it happens all the time with products from Tiger Direct-
STAY AWAY from TIGER DIRECT was their advise and mine!

  1. Unlike the reviewer from Sterling, VA, I am writing review after using this TV for quite some time. Overall I am very satisfied with my purchase. In my opinion, here are the good and so called not so great things about this TV.

    First the Good

    - I had this placed side by side to a Samsung in a store. the picture quality was as good as the Samsung. Since I started using this at home, I have been thoroughly amazed by the digital quality.
    - Nice footprint. Not heavy but pretty sturdy.
    - Controls are on the top. It's a good thing for me because it is out of reach for my 16 month son. There are video inputs to the side and the back.
    - Remote control that is simple to use and has one touch access to change the picture mode (normal, full, theater wide etc) and the preset screen setting like brightness, color, contrast etc (sports, movie, standard and customized)
    - Cool thing about the "Info" button on the remote - it displays the digital signal strength (shows them as bars like cellphone does). Very handy if you want to tune the antenna and get a instant feedback

Now the not so good feature(s) -

    - The screen display font size is very small. Wish it was slightly bigger. Maybe it is optimized to fit the 26" size - but it is certainly *small*. I am surprised no one else in this review mentioned this.

Note - If you don't have cable/dish and watch "over the air" channels, don't fall prey to those so called digital antenna. The antenna you have now will work with this - the TV has the built in tuner to receive both analog/digital channels.

disclaimer - this is my first lcd tv. i do not know if the features listed here are standard across all brands or unique to this one.

  2. I had to replace an analog TV, so I thought now would be a good time to buy an HDTV. I read a lot about HDTV and the great benefits that it brings to the TV world. I just have a roof antena in my attic and no cable. I read product reviews that flaged Toshiba as a good product/value and own several Toshiba electronic products, which have been great. I was hoping for better analog reception and good over the air HDTV. What I got was a super 26 inch Toshiba HDTV that has "much" better analog reception, fantastic HDTV reception all this at a great price, great delivery and a supper picture. BUY THIS TV!!!

  3. This is my first LCD / HD TV. I am very satisfied with the picture and sound quality, especially considering the price. However, Toshiba obviously didn't put a lot of effort into polishing some of the other features. Specifically, the user manual is almost incomprehensible and looks like it was translated from Japanese to English using Babelfish or something... Also customizing the channel lineup is difficult - you can set certain channels as "not viewable", but the firmware is finicky and won't always save your settings. Similarly, when changing inputs, the TV will often land on an input that's completely different from the one you selected for no obvious reason. This seems to point to shoddy firmware, but fortunately these are the only issues I've had so far.

One issue that bugs me that seems to be present on all HDTVs I looked at is the slow response time (it takes 10 seconds just to power on!) On the plus side, if you are planning on gaming with this TV, I haven't noticed any significant lag in the video processing, but then again I don't generally play fast-twitch games.

All in all, this is a great TV with with a lot of strength where it counts (picture and sound) and only a few minor flaws.

  4. I deeply enjoy my 32 inch Toshiba REGZA model, so when I wanted to get a 26 inch model for a small room (a kitchen), I didn't even look at any other brand. Unfortunately, no 26 inch REGZA model was readily available the day I made the purchase, so I took this 26 inch non-REGZA model. The picture is still gorgeous, though I strongly recommend getting the REGZA model in your desired size if at all possible. Perfect for wildlife and nature shows, as on Discovery HD Theater and National Geo HD channels, as well as for sports. Try the Sunrise Earth series on Discovery HD Theater--I think it's better (and better for you) than going to church! And for smallish screens (up through 32 inches) 480 is just as satisfactory as 720 or 1080 resolution. So save a few bucks and get a 480 model at a discounted price if you can find one. Else take the 720.

One minor quibble: no headphone jack (why not, Toshiba?). So run the sound through your stereo system, or anything which has a volume control, and plug your headphones in there for listening alone without disturbing the household (try Koss A130 for very decent quality at a moderate price).

  5. When my 9 yr. old 27" Phillips/Magnavox CRT TV blew out on me a few days ago, forcing me to join the Flat Screen TV world, I was worried-Most of the Flat Screen TVs I've seen in stores, catalogs & online were 32" and above, and I didn't think I could find a medium sized HD TV that would fit in my cubby-holed entertainment room, and also provide me with a quality viewing experience. Then voila, I see the Toshiba 26AV500U; It has ALL of the Bells & Whistles of the larger Flat Screen TVs. And any concern I had in losing that one inch of screen view quickly vanished, when I saw the GREAT picture quality on this Set!! To be sure, it will be a bit of sticker shock for Newbie Flat Screen TV buyers who haven't upgraded their TVs since the CRT days, until you look over at the bigger models and prices; Then, you'll be grateful for having THIS available choice. So,for those who are looking for a Great Flat Screen HD TV with the economy of price and size, that doesn't sacrifice quality, the Toshiba 26AV500U is the PERFECT FIT!

  1. Our old 27" Panasonic finally gave up the ghost just before Xmas. After reading as many internet reviews as possible, I decided to take the plunge and purchase the pricey Sony KDL46XBR5. You know you have made the right decision when the installer is jealous of your set. Great picture, great sound, great televison. This is the standard by which all LCD's are judged. I just wish there was more HD programming available. Saving up for my Blu-Ray player now.Sony KDL46XBR5 46" BRAVIA XBR(R) series LCD Flat Panel HDTV

  2. I owned the KDL-46XBR3 for a year, then I had an unexpected opportunity to replace it with the KDL-46XBR5.

If I thought that the XBR3 picture was amazing, the XBR5 is even better, much better. Movies get unprecedented realism, almost 3D. It is a visual experience I never had with any TV I ever watched.

Of course, a few analog channels look bad when stretched to 46", but that is true for anyone upgrading from a 27" low-def tube to an HD big fixed-pixel screen.

The XBR3's menu was easier to use than the fancy XMB in the XBR5, and both sets have big but basic remotes which are not good for anything other than controlling the TV itself. No buttons for even cable box's info, guide, page up/down etc.

And yes, its design is a stunner on the wall, when turned off.

Don't forget to read the reviews for KDL-46XBR4, it is the same TV.

  3. This was a terrific buy. The price has dropped considerably at local stores, but the best deal was from Van's with free shipping. We was able to track delivery all the way, and it came in a day early. It arrived in perfect shape and the driver even helped me bring it into my living room. I had to offer him a tip at least three times before he'd accept it.

We almost didn't spend this much money on a flat screen based on what I looked at in the Best Buy showroom. This one is worth it. We have a brightly lit family room during the day, and it doesn't get washed out at all. When we first tuned in to an HD channel our jaws dropped. HD channels are amazing and there's enough of them now that we spend most of our time watching only HD programming. We have an older DVD player, but movie rentals and home movies look great. With the 16:9 aspect ratio it feels like we're really watching a movie compared to just watching a movie on TV. There are a few artifacts and some of the older TV shows are blurry, but about 95% of what we watch is excellent. FIOS should fix these minor problems.

Setup was easy, about 30 minutes. To setup the TV you'll want to connect your cable directly to the TV first, then connect it to your DVD player and the HD box you get from the cable company.

We've been able to watch an HD movie from my new laptop that came with an HDMI output. We've also been able to work on the laptop hooked up to the LCD TV using a wireless mouse and keyboard from the couch. At 1920 x 1080 pixels, I had to increase the font size in the browser but I was off surfing in no time.

The style of the TV is beautiful. We placed it in a Stanley Furniture Lincoln Park Plasma TV Bookcase and the combination is stunning. We bought the bracket to mount it, but when we set the TV in the bookcase on it's own pedestal it was just fine. We love every aspect of it.

  4. I have been waiting for 2 years to join the flat panel, high def TV crowd. The thing that always stopped me was price, quality of standard def on a fixed pixel TV, and the number of high def stations to actually watch. Prices have come down and the number of high def stations has gone up so picture quality was left.

After researching it as much as I could, I got this TV. The floating glass perimeter with piano black surround looks sharp; I think much better than the XBR4.

On to picture quality: high def is fantastic as you would expect but standard def looks as good or better as a regular tube TV. It says in the owners manual that the picture is as good as the input. I have a satellite digial signal and get the results I describe. If you have cable or over the air then you may get different results.

Another thing I will mention is the remote has easy to use buttons on it to adjust the picture settings as well as the size. This means you can change the settings to the default picture settings for cinema, for example, which tweaks alot of calibrations on color, motion, etc. You also can easily toggle thru the picture sizes to stretch or unstretch the picture. I find the longer I have the TV the less I use these because I have found the ones I like best but it is nice to know they can be easily adjusted if desired.

Finally, I also got a Toshiba upscaling DVD player/recorder for about $130. It says it upscales DVD's to 1080p and they do look fantastic. I may have to hook up a regular DVD player to see if there really is a difference but overall this TV has worked out great for my situation.

  5. In the past six months, I've been fortunate enough to purchase two flat-screen TVs for different parts of my home, and one is the Sony XBR5 LCD TV. I find the picture and sound quality very good, especially on HD sources such as 1080p Blu-Ray. The HDMI and other connections work flawlessly. The controls are well done with easy-to-navigate menus, and all the technology Sony describes adds up to a really good product. Side by side against Samsung or other LCD competitors, I think Sony clearly has the best product.

I would leave it at that, however, the truth is that as good as the Sony is, it doesn't hold a candle to the other TV I recently bought - a 50" Pioneer 1080p plasma. While plasma may seem to be yesterday's technology, I had a tight space that the Pioneer 5010HD fit perfectly, and so I went with it. Now, after several months of watching the plasma versus the Sony, I can honestly say that the LCD technology in the Sony has a long way to go before it catches the Pioneer's picture quality. Indeed, after watching the plasma for any length of time, going back to the LCD is a bit of a let-down...by comparison, the Sony is harsh and grainy, with much poorer black levels and much less of a "film like" experience.

Yes, I give the Sony high marks for what it is - but I'd encourage anyone reading this review to take a long hard look at a similar sized high-end plasma unit before committing to the Sony.
