  1. This TV was a lemon that came with many problems. The design of remote is awful, as is the placement of the DVD opening on top (dust). If you do get one, save the box, because you'll need it on the return.

When it didn't work the seller tried to get us to accept several other brands that all had bad reviews.

  1. I actually made the decision to purchase this not only because of the size, HD quality and price, but mostly due to the great reviews on this thing. Read them, they really are informative on this particular item.

I have to say, the delivery service alone was fantastic. They called us before, during and after the delivery. We were impressed with that aspect even before we tore open the box and got to experience the tv itself.

Wow. This is coming from a person who can care less about televisions. I now know why people get hooked on these things. Even in the daylight, the picture is clear as a bell.
Sound is just right too. There is a speaker all along the entire bottom of the TV, so the surround sound is realistic. No enhancements needed (thankfully for the wallet).
Our first show we watched in HD was so BIG it was dizzying. Kind of like a mini-Imax theater in your home. We hooked our Xbox 360 to it and the HD games are mesmerizing.

I can't say much to add to the technical side of the reviews above and below me.
This TV was a huge value.
It does get very warm if left on all night (not something I'd recommend).

Get HD cable if you have it. Otherwise don't bother, since you'd be wasting the full potential of this thing. Big difference between HD and normal cable.

Got this for my husband who was amazed that I could get such the "perfect TV". How'd I do it? READ THE REVIEWS. TAKE NOTES. Get the right size for your home. This 46" is measured 46" from one upper corner to the opposite lower corner. Get out a tape measure and do the same to get a feel for how big you want to go. It is HUGE if you are not used to anything over 36" in old-school tv's.
Get the highest HD # out there (that 1080 p thing) and you are good to go if you are shopping around.
Also, we compared the projector versus plasma versus flat panel and came up with flat panel to be the best option.
Plasma is out if you have kids. One flying object and the screen could lose pixels (or whatever you call them). Projectors are out. Do you know how technical and huge those things still are? Wait a little longer until they get smaller and not so IF-Then -Else-ish as far as what type you need.
Flat panels - best decision we made this year so far in gadgets.
Now go read the more technical reviews and make up your own mind.

  2. We love this TV!

It's connected to our DVR by HDMI and to a LG Home Theater in a Box with an optical digital cable. Great HD picture, great sound.

  3. This TV is everything I hoped it would be. I spent a month reading every forum and review I could find before I finally picked the JVC LT-46FN97. If you read AVSForum, you will see that many highly touted brands have chronic problems (clouds, flashlights, banding, eggs, HDMI handshake problems....). In reading a 47 page thread about the JVC, none of these problems were ever mentioned. I had finally found a 46" LCD that worked.
Not only does this unit have a beautiful picture, but the sound is the best I've ever heard from a TV. My wife thought I had the home theater speakers turned on, the first time she heard it. Also, looks great in the room. The matte black finish and the clean front panel really adds to the looks of the room.
    Buy this TV!

  4. Before purchasing this TV, I had never seen it in person. I saw the 40" JVC next to a Sony and the difference was noticeable. The clarity and crispness of the picture was incredible. I read all the reviews and decided to roll the dice on the 46".

I could not be happier. It is a great TV with a great picture. The TV is partnered up with a Yamaha YSP 1100 sound projector. This combination has taken our home theater experience to another level. I would suggest getting a professional to install and make sure to get an HD box. You will not be disappointed.

    I highly recommend this TV.

  5. I purchased this TV at a military exchange in September 07 for $1700 after a manager's rebate, a first time credit card 10% off and a manufacturer's rebate (the perfect storm of sales). After getting it home and using it for several weeks, I would have paid twice that.

It has a beautiful picture. VERY dark blacks. Colors are beautiful and sharp but in 1080p, it's soft enough that it doesn't hurt your eyes during extended watching.

I would 100% recommend this TV to anyone and everyone. I have had zero problems with it, even the on screen menu that isn't very intuitive is a breeze after several operations.

  1. Great TV for the price. Built-in DVD player is a real plus. I bought one for each grandkid and they love it. Picture quality isn't that of a SONY, but good enough for guest rooms and video games on a 15" TV in this price range.

  2. I purchased this for the specific purpose of using it during my wife's temporary stays in a nursing home. It's light and easy to transport. It has a great picture and fair reception with an inexpensive indoor antenna. The dvd player works well and has good sound. It's just what we needed.

  3. I needed a new T.V. for my kitchen counter & I thought this one might fit the bill, but, when it arrived (on time) & was set up, I felt that something was missing. I was not in love with the picture, which seemed greenish to me. It was just not an enjoyable experience, so I ordered a Toshiba HD 19" set it up in place of the Sylvania & I have been truly satisfied ever since (this was about 6 months ago). If fact, I was so pleased that I just had to write this comment to let others know how satisfied I was with the Toshiba. The Sylanvania is just sitting unused in my spare bedroom.

  4. The picture is ok but not great. The sound isn't great at all. Of course there isn't much to expect from such a little box but the TV even sounds bad considering that. My laptop sounds better. The worse thing is the DVD functionality. I haven't really payed attention to it before buying, so now I am blessed with frustration:
    - Only plays DVDs. No VCD, SVCD or other video formats!
    - NTSC ONLY!!!!
    - Only plays region 0 and 1 DVDs and no hack available anywhere

As for audio cd playing I find it annoying that the drive is fairly loud and that the screen is always on. It's an ugly blue screen just displaing 'track 1', 'track 2' etc. - no CD text.
My recommendation: If space wise any possible - get a TV only and an external DVD player.

  5. this tv has a great picture, is an attractive piece of decor, and an easy-to-understand instruction book. except i can't get my old vcr hooked up - audio works, video doesn't. my fault. the remote would be better if the words on it were bigger, other than that, it's laid out well.

  1. This TV is all that I expected. HD is not yet available in my area. However, I can easily change the screen size to accommodate the cable size that is available. At the same time, it is equally easy to change the screen size for DVDs in widescreen.

  2. I like this T.V. The only thing taht I do not like is the remote control, it is too big.

  3. I BOUGHT THIS TOSHIBA 32HL BECAUSE OF HIGH CONSUMER REPORTS RATINGS AND COMMENTS ON AMAZON. FOUND MY BEST PRICE ON AMAZON ALSO. GREAT PICTURE ALTHO I HAVEN'T HOOKED INTO HD SERVICE YET. PRETTY EASY SETUP AND GOOD INSTRUCTIONS AND I'M NO TECHIE! REMOTE IS GREAT BUT KIND OF KLUNKY WITH MY PANASONIC DVD PLAYER. ONE STRANGE THING: NO INTERNAL CLOCK! OR AM I MISSING SOMETHING?? FITS NICELY INTO MY CORNER CUPBOARD... ATTRACTIVE FLAT BLACK CABINET THAT IS NOT DISTRACTING. CHECK CR FOR MORE INFO!

  4. Shortly after 1-year display has a fine dark line on right side in displays over 480 res. Think the line is a burn-in of the right edge of the 480 window. Other than line everything else is great. Priced a replacement display cost is as much as I paid for set.

  5. I bought this tv on 11/24/2006. It is now 09/15/2008 and the tv is broken with a repair estimate of 900.00 plus labor. Sorry I listened to consumer report.

  1. This is an excellent TV with great picture quality. The only issue is its warmth. Since I have this set placed in bedroom, the heat is unbearable especially in the summer. Anyone experience the same problem?

  2. I didnt buy it from amazon(sorry).I got mine at [...] and i really got a good deal on it.They had a coupon for [...] dollars off so ii got it for [...] which to me is a bargin for a set of this caliber.I dont have a single complaint. The picture is just wonderful even with a standard picture. The hd looks amazing.I didnt see a problem with sound at all.Its in our bedroom so who is going to be turning it up loud anyways.Heat was not an issue and my directv works fine thru the hdmi input.I have an oppo upconvert dvd player and regular dvds look like a whole new dvd.The picture with that dvd player was just beautiful.I hated to toss my dvd collection and buy hd dvds so i bought the oppo upconvert and its wonderful. It really makes a big difference.Buy it at [...] if you can and try to use the coupon if its still available.I couldnt be more happy with the set.So far so good, knock on wood""

  3. Its really hard to express the difference watching on a high quality hdtv makes. This is a beautiful brilliant TV with tons of inputs and great quality. I've owned for 2 months with no problems. Some complain about the size of the remote and the speakers, but both seem plenty adequate to me. I would recommend this tv to anyone.

  4. OK first off, i did a lot of shopping when i was looking into getting myself an LCD for the first time.

I got this unit at another site for around 700 bucks shipped.

Mostly play xbox 360 on it and all i can say is "WOW", every game on it is light years ahead of my old CRT

The HD channels are perfect too and the only con i can think of is that Standard Television isnt so clear, but that is a small price to pay when thinking of the big picture

  5. In my opinion, the Sharp LC-32D43U and LC-32D42U provide the best overall value for the money, when compared to comparably priced 720p native resolution LCD TVs.

I have owned the Sharp LC-32D42U for 4 months now and I couldn't be happier. The Sharp LC-32D42U and LC-32D43U 720p TVs are identical, with these exceptions: The 42U has a low-gloss frame with a silver base while the 43U has a high-gloss screen frame with a black base. (The 42U is a lower cost warehouse version and the 43U is a higher cost department store version.)

One downside to these Sharp TVs is that they reportedly do not do well deinterlacing or recognizing 3:2 pulldown when fed 1080i signals. However, when fed their native 720p signals, these TVs perform beautifully. Some reviews also mention subpar standard-definition 480i video processing (I rarely watch analog TV or VHS); fewer picture adjustments than many LCDs (this has not presented a problem for me); inability to change aspect ratios with HDMI sources (this won't bother purists who appreciate a movie director's intended aspect ratio). When fed a 720p signal from a cable or satellite box, HD reception looks great. (Sharp also recommends that the 720p output setting be used with Blu-Ray and HD players.) I have not experimented with the computer input, but most people report being satisfied with it.

In spite of its faults, the main attraction of these two Sharp LCDs is that they produce outstanding picture quality with 720p input: Deep blacks, vivid contrast, accurate colors and a very fast 6ms refresh rate which makes a big difference during fast motion scenes. When viewed next to comparably priced Sony, Samsung and Toshiba LCDs with 8ms refresh rates during fast panning and other fast motion scenes, the clarity of the Sharp TVs is vastly superior. This fast refresh rate is also the reason that many gamers prefer the Sharp TVs.

Unlike several other LCD brands, all of the Sharp digital processing (automatic brightness, enhanced picture contrast, black level expansion and digital noise reduction) can be disabled. The LC-32D42U can be found in the $700 range, making it a much better buy than its higher priced fraternal twin, the LC-32D43U. Also, the industry trend toward low-gloss LCD screen frames (such as the one found on the LC-32D42U) makes good sense, because black matte screen frames do not reflect room light or show dust and fingerprints.

Admittedly, the Sharp TVs do not have the greatest sound. The Sharp TVs can be configured to variable stereo audio output (simultaneously muting the TV's internal speakers) and the volume level of external self powered speakers (I am using an Altec Lansing 3-piece computer speaker system) can be controlled with the Sharp remote. Wireless headphones can also be used, with full volume control from the remote and the TV also has an optical output which can be used to direct digital sound to a surround sound receiver.
