5 comments about Toshiba 50HM66 50-Inch Diagonal 16:9 Integrated HD DLP Projection TV with HDMI.
  1. I have had this set for 1 year next week and LOVE IT. I have not had one single problem with it. The picture is killer and the features are simple to use. The only thing I dislike is the audio could be a little better, so I went out and purchased a surround sound to fix that problem. When I decide to upgrade to a larger viewing size in the next year or so, Toshiba will defiantly be on top of my list of brands.

  2. This is our Tax Refund gift to our family, purchased in March of 2007. The TV retails for around $1200 nearly every where you look, but we were able to find it for less than $930. The best price I have found on the net is $730.

I would highly recommend this TV to anyone looking for a great, great picture and average sound. If sound is terribly important to you, you already own a surround sound system.

My bulb did blow nine months into owning it... not sure how many hours, but I know it is on nearly all day! I called Toshiba and they are processing the replacement bulb to be sent to me now (under warranty). Someone complained that bulbs cost $600... that's nonsense - before Toshiba came through I priced them as low as $229.00 No, I don't want to pay that every nine months; I think I could find the bulb for less down the road and I did save substantially in the initial purchase.

  3. YES, IT WAS REFURBISHED BUT WITHIN 6 MONTHS I HAD TO BUY NEW LAMP KIT FOR ALMOST $300 THEN A BLACK MARK APPEARED AT TOP OF SCREEN & IT WILL COSTS $600 TO FIX IT!!! ABSOLUTELY NO GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE FROM TOSHIBA AFTER LETTERS, EMAILS & CALLS. WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANYTHING FROM THIS COMPANY.

  4. Its a great TV, good price for the size, but that low price hides the hidden cost.

The $250 lamps. They last about year, (I got 18 months out of mine). You are essentially buying a $250 halogen lamp that should cost $50. So yah, its planned thing, a way for Toshiba to milk more money out of you. And any time they want to force you to buy a new TV all the need to do is stop making that lamp.

Spend a bit more on a LCD TV, or another brand entirely.

It does get 2 stars for being a good TV, as long as you pay the yearly "subscription" charge to use it.

  5. First off, I love this TV! I play a lot of video games and watch blu-ray movies and the picture quality is very good. whoever says that it's not is full of it. I have a 1080p tv also and they are very close in picture quality. I have owned this tv for about 19 months now and have not had to change a bulb yet. I would recomend this tv to everyone. For the ones who have had to replace their bulbs, I think you just got a bad apple....it happens with all tv's, even the best. good luck

5 comments about Panasonic CT-27SL14 27" Flat Screen TV.
  1. 1. My first problem with this Panasonic TV -- CT-27SL14 27" Flat Screen -- is that when I move from one channel to another, the black screen between channels is much too long for me to tolerate. For people who like to do channel surfing I think this behavior will be annoying. I have returned the TV. When I went back to the store, I tested Sony and Toshiba for this. The Sony black inter-channel blink is almost insignifcant; Toshiba is longer than Sony but much shorter than Panasonic. I can't believe that some people can tolerate the black coffee break that Panasonic takes between channels.

    2. The Panasonic picture has an overall darkish quality: although whites and light colors are very bright, dark colors are very dark. I tried to adjust video, picture etc. but I can't get rid of the overall darkness.

Since I had purchased the 4-year protection plan, I had the BestBuy technician come over to take a look and he said that, given my taste, I would never be happy with that TV. So I have returned it and decided to get a Toshiba.

  2. I just spent several weeks look at inexpensive analog sets. I had a low budget, but I wanted the best audio and picture I could get for my money.

I ultimately went with the Panasonic 20" because it had both good audio and video. However, I did look at many bigger TVs, this one in particular. This model, in this price range, has a far superior image quality. At the store I visited this model just stood out from the rest. Indeed, the clerks confirmed this and said that it was the best "cheap" 27" TV they sold. The big drawback is the audio. I turned this set up to about 1/3 to 1/2 volume and it was noticeably bad.

There is a workaround for this problem - hook your stereo up to the TV. Voila, inexpensive analog TV, great image. I decided to go with the 20" just because I had limited space and couldn't have both my stereo and the TV in the same spot.

TV buyers should definitely pay attention to various reviews on reliability by general buyers and Consumer Reports. Panasonic has a very high reliabilibility. Many TVs, especially those by Samsung, RCA, GE and others. Even Sony ranks as a little bit less than Panasonic. Other brands have better reputations - Sanyo if you can believe it, perhaps even Toshiba - but I just couldn't find any of their models that suited my needs and price range.

  3. I bought this TV a few months ago and while it isn't a horrible set I think I could have got a better one for a little bit more money.

The picture is sharp and clear and the visibility from the side is fine, but it seems to be a bit dark to me. I have the brightness turned all the way up and it is still very hard to make out some dark scenes in TV shows, movies, and video games. Also it seems to take an unusual amount of time to start up when you turn it on and change channels while surfing.. nothing major though.

I don't have any problems with the sound. It gets a bit dead sounding when the volume is turned way up, but I hardly ever have to raise it above 10 on the volume bar (it goes up to 63)- so unless you really like to crank you TV you probably won't notice it.

I would plan on buying a better remote, I can't stand the one Panosonic includes with it.. it is very cheesey feeling and I can't stand the circle they use for the channel and volume controls.

Overall I don't regret buying it, but I do think I could have done better.

  4. If I could I would give this set no stars. We needed to get a TV delivered to our house due to the fact that we both own sedans. None of the big box stores would deliver in this size so we tried amazon. The TV arrived via frieght eagle on a pallet they brought it inside and offered to take the box. I said better leave it incase we need to return it little did I know. So I unpacked the TV and it looked fine. Once I plugged it in the sound works but no picture at all. I tried on all inputs and nothing the tube stayed black.

Then the customer service nightmare began. Amazon is clearly the worst in the industry. We sent an email it was not returned until 48 hrs later. We called the hard to find 800 # (search google) and they that the set was unreturnable and we would have to hope for the best with panasonic. The phone person was rude and suggested that it was our fault that we did not let the untrained shippers install the TV. They also suggested that we must be unable to read despite the fact that we purchased the set online. We hope you read this and never order a TV from Amazon.

  5. This set failed spontaneously. Screen flashed, and it went dead.
This was just after 1 year. We appealed to Panasonic and got them to cover the parts at a local repair place, but it still cost us $100. Then, coincidentally 1 year later, it failed again, exactly the same way. Fooey. I expect better.
