5 comments about Toshiba 26HL66 26-Inch Diagonal TheaterWide 16:9 Integrated HD LCD TV.
- This TV is everything Consumer Reports said it is. This product got excellent on nearly every category reviewed by CR and I am truly happy with my purchase. I look forward to many years of crystal clear viewing!
- The TV meets expectations.
The installation and operating manuals seem to cover everything, but could be clearer.
I would purchase again.
-
In regards to the previous reviewer's comments, I noticed the same problem. Our tvs must have come from the same "defective" batch. Light leaks from the bottom left center of the screen when watching wide screen (16x9) movies. The light emanates upwards from the bottom of the screen, above the tv shell, and shines like a small spotlight on the black bar. I thought is was just light being reflected from the light on the ceiling in my room. Unfortunately, it wasn't a reflection. Then I hoped it would eventually just go away. It hasn't.
In regards to the Toshiba 26HL66, I can't knock it or brag about it. I will only offer you my experience. Let's start with the exterior. It's nicely designed, and just as sharp as Sony's high end XBR1 model. Although I've always been a Sony devotee, I purchased this tv because it performed better with fast motion than all other lcd hdtvs I looked at, and also because the color was excellent and produced a sharp image. Anyways, I went to Best Buy, Sears, Circuit City, K-Mart, Target, and Ken Cranes, to see for myself the pros and cons I've read about lcd hdtvs. The main con has been that lcd tvs can't handle fast motion, such as a football game or quick camera movement. Call it what you want, blurring, pixelation, or ghosting. This is definitely true. Lcd tv technology has not yet been perfected. Remember, this technology, not too long ago, introduced lcd computer monitors to the market. When it comes to handling fast motion, the Toshiba Regza lcd beats them all, including Sony's high end XBR1 line. I must have seen every 2006 lcd model on the market. Toshiba was the only manufacturer that stood out above the rest when it came to fast motion. I'll give this tv's response to fast motion a B+. Very good but not perfect as would be viewed on a crt tv. The sound quality is very good in a bedroom setting, which is where I have this tv. There are five viewing modes: natural, theater wide (1, 2, 3), and full screen. In standard definition (local channels), the natural mode produces an image of 17 (L) x 13 (H). It fills the screen from top to bottom with black bars on the sides. The three theater wide modes and full screen mode fill the whole screen. But only natural, full, and theater wide 1 modes show the whole image. Theater wide 2 and 3 modes zoom in, so you lose a little of the original image. I prefer theater wide mode 1. You get a nice full screen without image distortion. The image is slightly better in natural mode but it defeats the purpose of the tv's 26" screen size. It's nice to have choices. The remote control configuration is ok. I don't like the fact that the channel "enter" button isn't located near the numbers. It may take a few days to get a hang of all the buttons. They could have left a few off. But once you know the functions of all the buttons, navigating through the on-screen menus is simple.
- I've had this TV for approximately 6 months now and I think it has great picture quality. Easy to operate and love the HD. Using as a bedroom TV that gets as much use as the main TV. I looked at higher priced HD TV's and I believe this was the best quality picture for the money.
- This set gets better-than-cable reception off 30 year old rabbit ears. Set up is easy, instructions are clear, and the remote is easy to use. We are very pleased with the excellent quality of the picture and the sound.

5 comments about Sanyo PLV Z4 - LCD projector - 1000 ANSI lumens - 1280 x 720 - widescreen - High Definition 720p.
- This projector is better than I expected. In Hi-Def its amazing and in SD its still very nice. $1600 on amazon including a free replacement lame, I feel like I got a great deal. If you have the right room for a projector (size and light control are critical) its blows the doors off a 50 inch HD set for less money. I've yet to discover the downside after six months of use.
- I have had this projector for about a year, and as others have mentioned the image is great. It looks far nicer than any of the projectors I saw at local stores (Magnolia HiFi, Fry's, Bestbuy, Circuit City, etc).
The colors are bright and defined, the image is sharp. The lens throw is very handy. The image isn't washed out like older LCD or in store units. The black levels, while not as good as a plasma, are still plenty good.
I use it mainly for Movies and an Xbox 360. The image controls it offers are great, to switch from highly vibrant colors good for Video games and back to more realistic colors for movies.
I project approximately a 100" screen and sit about 10' from the screen. At this point I am just far enough away to not see pixels. Any closer and you can see them however. My room is not completely dark during the day either. I have blackout curtains in the windows, but some light leaks in and my walls are white, so even in moderately lit rooms the projector is plenty bright.
My projector did fry itself recently, but I have a feeling that is more the fault of my homes wiring. After having the projector Warranty repaired by Sanyo, I am thoroughly impressed. They provided me a Fedex tracking number to ship the projector to them next day at their expense. I had *my* projector back and working two days later after replacing the power supply, lamp ballast and a fan. That is one of the fastest turn arounds I've ever seen, second only to warranty support that ships a replacement ahead of receiving the broken unit. I will gladly do and recommend business to any company that treats their customers that well.
There are better projectors out now, but for the money & free replacement lamp this is an exceptional deal still. The only thing I could ask for at this point is 1080p, but 720p is great nonetheless.
- I've owned a Z4 for about a year now and am still blown away by it. How can you not love a crystal clear 9' across picture? I have about 700 hours on the original bulb and it's still going strong. Here's some things you'll want to consider before buying a front projector, though:
- You MUST be able to control the lighting in the room a front projector is used in. You don't need a dedicated theater room like a basement or anything. I use mine in my living room and the drapes are enough. Just keep in mind that you won't be able to watch in a fully illuminated room like you can with a traditional television set. The darker the room, the better the picture. Ambient light is a huge factor.
- Your picture will only be as good as the signal you put into it. You'll want to invest in component cables(if not better). I used a composite cable at first. There's a huge difference with this big of a picture. Cost didn't sound like a big deal to me, until I realized I'd need 25' of component cable to go from the source to the projector. Painful, but worth it. Also, take a look at your DVD/Cable service. Again, your picture is only as good as it's input.
That said, I love this thing. There're a few concessions to be made with this setup, but I think it's worth it. A screen this size combined with a kicking audio system is truly an experience!
- When my old big screen decided to die, I decided I wanted to go with the full movie theatre experience. After about 2 months of research I decided upon the Sanyo Z4 and what a great purchase it was. I have the projector roughly 14 ft from the 121" HC Screen. The image quality is fantastic using the HDMI connection. I have it hooked up to the DishHD and a upconverting Sony dvd player. If you search around you can find great prices on HDMI cables that aren't the ridiculous price monster ones.
- I had a Panasonic PT-AE100 before so I was coming from a 480p projector to 720p. I cannot say how nice it is to have the lens shift and be able to place the projector off center and away. The automatic lens cover is great so you don't have to worry about misplacing a lens cap. There are ports on the projector that fit an air duster tube so you can dust the panels if you should get a speck or bit of dust on a panel. Also, it is quieter than the comparable Epson 720p projector which one of my friends has. On a side note, I have not seen any kind of banding artifacts that I've read other projectors occasionally have. I've had it for over a year and I'm still very happy with it and it's still working like a champ.
I prefer using this to my 42" 1080p LCD - the colors are much better as well as overall picture quality. I use this primarily at home in the living room for Bluray, HD DVD, and HDTV. On occasion, I take it to friends' houses for movies by the pool (I bring a portable projection screen) or video games.

5 comments about LG LG 20LS7D 20 " High definition TV.
- I bought this for my wife for Christmas (she opened it early.) Set up was straight forward, and we were using it in minutes. The picture is very good. We are using it as a bedroom tv, and the HD tuner pulls in all of the local digital channels (and several not so local). The images are stable and I am very pleased with it. Unlike another reviewer, I would expect when using it on cable or with a satellite dish to need a "box." My $4,000 plasma set in the TV room requires a satellite box. I would fully expect that this would too, to use it on satellite. But for off-the-air digital HD, with the $15 rabbit ears I bought at the same time, it works very well. I recommend the product and am now considering getting a couple more for other bedrooms and my office.
- I purchased to access digital channels from my cable provider without a cable box and it seems that to access the digital channels I need to use the menu to change to the other tuner. This is a bit cumbersome when just trying to channel surf as not all the channels are available o, also the channel numbers are a bit goofy, all of a sudden they are all hyphenated numbers - something unexpected from my cable provider I suppose. The biggest disappointment is the built-in sound. I swapped my standard Sony 20" TV for this one, and boy was I surprised at the quality difference. The built in speakers are very tinny, they sound like those of a $10 battery transistor radio - very little range and almost no bass at all. Bottom line, with a cable box and an amplifier for sound it would be all that I expected. But it looks beautiful :-)
- This was my second choice for I bought an Insignia 19" with built in DVD player, and returned it within two days. It was sluggish and the displayed numbers were way too small. This tv however is quick and responsive and the display is large enough to read. This also doesn't need a set-on-top box and the picture is far better even for analog channels. The only complaint is the interface and remote. When you auto find channels it separates the different kind of receptions so that when you channel surf you only see what is in that category. But thats no big deal as you just push any number like 2 and you get a list of channels starting with 2-0, 2-1,.... The speakers are also a little weak but what can you expect, i've hooked it up with computer speakers and it sounds fine.
- PRO:
* Picture quality from all sources is very good (but see Viewing Angle comment).
* Unique presentation of channels during tuning; I like it.
* Has all 3 tuners.
* Trim looking.
CON:
* Viewing angle is terrible, particularly as little as 10-20 degrees down from straight-on horizontal. If you look up at the screen, as is common in a bedroom setting, the picture deteriorates quickly as the screen gets very "contrasty" and dark. Turns out that many 20" and smaller sets I checked out at stores have the same characteristic; 32" and greater don't seem to have it; 26", some do and some don't. So I did end up keeping it.
* Others have reported excellent over-the-air reception. Mine is lousy, getting no O-T-A channels from an admittedly old analog antenna, but that my 42" Sony LCD projection picks up some 10 local digital channels using! Since I expect to use with cable, not a show-stopper.
* As others have reported, sound is poor.
* No channel labeling.
SUMMARY: Far from a perfect set, but I judged it to be a decent value in a flawed field. I think many 20" sets are computer monitors fitted with tuners. Beware sets that are 1440x900 (16:10) instead of true 1366x768 (16:9).
- This is a fine television and considering the price (I've had this two weeks and Crutchfield dropped the price $50) and size. However there are a couple of quirks I don't like. One is the remote and the start up time when you turn it on. After the picture appears the remote still doesn't function for a few more seconds. The on screen menus look slick but in reality offer very little adjustment. Finally the shiny band at the bottom of the screen houses the speakers and when viewed from an angle is very ripply. Not very attractive if you have a lot of natural light in your room.
One final thing, you will want external speakers, these flat out suck.

5 comments about Toshiba 52HM94 52-Inch DLP Integrated HDTV with Cable Card Slot.
- This is a follow up to my review of 7/05. I stated in my review that I had some issues with the verticle bars and loss of video at various times since I purchased my set in 5/05. I have been contacted by TOSHIBA recently, and a "file" has been created for my complaints. I have no idea if anything else will be done to settle my claim for a new replacement or not. I gave them details of my problems and asked them to let me know their decision. I will insist on the identical model, as I love the hd performance and I am willing to give them another chance to make it right by me. As of today, two weeks after their phone interview, I have not gotten any response on my claim. I would still reccomend this television almost without hesitation (pendind a fix by TOSHIBA). For the money, the digital picture is very good to outstanding and the hd performance will knock your socks off!!!!.............still waiting............
- Inspect screen Before signing and accepting delivery of any Toshiba DLP, be sure to check the screen to make sure that the coating on the inside of the screen is uniform. On mine, there was a circle about 10" in diameter that you can see in certain lighting and even when the TV is off! It will appear lighter than the surrounding areas at times and can be annoying. I called Toshiba and had a service man come out and even though he acknowledged that this is common, Toshiba will not replace the screen. I would have given them a negative 10 if it were possible just because of their attitude. So, look at the screen VERY carefully before accepting or purchasing. If you see this problem, refuse to accept it. Or else just buy a Samsung or Mitsubishi DLP to avoid the problem I have.
carefully before accepting delivery
- Toshiba doesn't know what customer service is , I bought a new 52hmx95 over a month ago and it took much yelling to get a lamp replace bulb . I installed it and the tv still doesn't work..Called Toshiba and got the same old run around .. Bad tv , bad company ..
- I also had issues with the screen. There was a thumb print on the inside of the screen and a new screen had to be put in. That was the easy part. After months of the TV not working and 5 service calls, Toshiba finally replaced my TV. The newer one has blown bulbs twice in 10 months and has been in for service once. Toshiba's customer service is really bad. They have a "we got your money now your screwed" attitude. Google this model and you will find multiple sites with very upset people. I know some have been lucky, but don't take the chance.
- I have owned this television for over a year and have been nothing but happy with it. I subscribe to an HD package with my satelite provider and use a dvd player linked with an HDMI cable -- the picture on both dvds and my HD programing is great. I have had numerous friends come over and be amazed that a projection television can produce such a great picture. The memory card slot on the telivison can be quite useful at times, too. The television has a picture viewer and an MP3 player so I can load up some MP3s onto a memory card real quick (I use memory stick but the television accepts many different memory cards) take them to my television and listen to them with all of the song information displayed on television screen.
I did have one small problem a few months after I purchased the television. The audio would come on but no picture. I called technical support and they were very quick to determine that my bulb had gone, so they immediately sent me another one. However after I got off the phone with them I put the old bulb back in and it worked again. Have never had a problem with it since.
