  1. This set is aesthetically elegant and pleasing to the eye and it definitely will look great in anyone's living room and/or home theater. The tv comes with many inputs and it is very flexible in terms of matching any equipment you might have. The sound is also very clear and I find that the 'simulated' setting enhances the voice's loudness and clarity at the expense of musical dynamics which is not a bad thing when you watch a movie or anything with a lot of dialogue, otherwise the 'wow' setting will do. But what really sets apart this set from the rest of them is the picture quality, clarity, depth, detail, contrast and overall color fidelity (notice that there is no color bleeding either), if properly adjusted, is simply amazing. I am shocked at the amount of people that watch tv using the picture factory setting, with this set (as with any other) the picture settings must be adjusted to match a more lifelike quality, fortunately this set make this process very quick and simple and the menus are well organized and very intuitive to use. Only small nicks I have are that the dark scenes have a tendency to lose some black detail (like a collar and/or pocket on a black suit) and at times the people's faces might have a very slight tendency toward the orange/purple/reddish spectrum (very minor however) and I was unable to improve to a 100% satisfaction factor (I like to emphasize that these minor problem I just described are really really small and are hard to notice unless you scrutinize the image). One more thing, knowing the poor service that SONY provides to their customers, I strongly recommend buying an extended warranty if available (I bought a 5 years one), you'll be glad you did if any problem arises. Overall I am fully satisfied with this set and I don't feel the need to complicate my life with an HDTV set, which (to my opinion) is an overrated technology which benefit mostly the companies behind it rather than the consumer. By the way, One of the video features is an edge enhancer that causes a harsh artificial edge to show on elements in the picture and makes small writing hard to read, I recommend to keep this feature turned off. Overall: EXCELLENT.

  2. I came home tonight to a TV that no longer works. Purchased 1/17/05 and no workie 6/8/05 - RIPOFF!!!! I see that someone else had the same issue - mine shows the "Standby Timer" light flashes 5x and then pauses and then 5x and pauses, etc. Sony CS says needs repair. 5 MONTHS! COME ON! $600 down the tubes - labor is on me... I have a TV upstairs that I have had for 20+ years - not a SONY. I have been a loyal SONY customer for 15 years.... gotta wonder. Take a hard look at this TV.

  3. We wanted to replace our 27" SDTV with something a bit bigger so we initially investigated HDTVs. After getting some sticker shock we decided to try to find a good SDTV. The 32" WEGA fit the bill perfectly.
The set is quite heavy but the picture is great and the set has a pretty good number and combination of video inputs. By far the coolest feature is the 16:9 enhanced mode. If you have a DVD player that you can set to force widescreen playback mode you will get a vertically stretched picture. You can then set the WEGA to squash the resulting picture into the middle part of the screen. The stretched out image now returns to normal and the result is a noticeable improvement in the quality of widescreen DVD movies. In this mode almost all 480 vertical scan lines are being used to display the movie when you would normally waste about 100 scanlines displaying black bars.

With great standard def picture quality and enhanced DVD viewing this set is a great option for those of us still living in a pre-HDTV world.

  4. Overall, for daily TV viewing, I like this TV. Picture is okay, sound is fine. However, I do have a major problem with it - TEXT! I don't mean the text like scrolling at the bottom of the screen on News Channels or during commercials, but the text that makes up the score of the game you're watching and text overlays like that. For some reason, it really looks bad. When you turn on Sony's "enhancement" for text, it looks worse, IMO. Another time I notice this is during video games (PS2 specifically).

Would I buy this model again? Probably not. I like it for normal viewing, but this TV was bought to be a gameroom TV (sports and console games, mainly) so the text crap is annoying.

  5. It weighs 160 pounds, so you'll need 2+ strong people to unpack it and lift it into place (thus saving the $50-75 delivery fee). At this weight, you'll not be returning this to the store for service; plan accordingly. There is one good concealed handhold molded into each side for lifting. The box itself has two pairs of good handholds. The base of the TV is about 4" narrower than the unit itself, so you may not need a new base or swivel table.

Open the box at the store; there are too many reports of concealed damage and vandalism lately.

The remote is much simpler than my previous Sonys, and seems to include everything that's necessary.

Be aware that there are no Audio Out jacks, so you can't feed it into your stereo. You may want to connect your cables before you install the unit, as the jacks are cleverly placed waaaaay in the back so you can only reach them with difficulty.

The Trinitron picture is better than that of other manufacturers, in most people's opinion. Although it will cost more than the others, the image is why you will choose and enjoy this model. This will be our fourth Sony; we've owned them for many decades with good satisfaction.

If you are considering so-called HDTV as an alternative, be aware that 99% of what is coming in your house is old Standard TV (SDTV), just like this Sony. Your old DVD players (and DVDs) are NOT HDTV. Your old cable box is NOT HDTV. If you want HDTV, you can buy a few premium HDTV channels from your cable company, but you'll need to pay extra, and also need a new HDTV cable box--and the other 100 channels will remain SDTV.

You can actually use this Sony to tune HDTV off the air, but you will need a separate antenna, and then you are likely to get newsmen in HDTV, and commercials and old films in, you guessed it, SDTV.

If you feel that you simply must get a wide-screen unit instead of this one, consider that it will stretch the SDTV signal to fit, causing circles to look like ovals, and faces to look like chipmunks. Alternatively, you can keep the original shape by showing black bars on both sides, but then you will need a 40" unit to show as much area as this 32" Sony has. Either way, you will pay several times as much.

I hope this triva is helpful. Enjoy your viewing!

  1. I bought this one and the 42" and love both of them. Simply beautiful picture and looks great on the wall. The only cons I have are: (These are differences than the previous Hitachi plasma that I had)

    1. The switch between inputs and tuner is no longer automatic. So if you switch to input 2, you can not get back to cable by hitting the channel change button or entering a channel number, you have to go back to the input selector and select "cable". The old set would switch back.

    2. Sound is thinner than the previous set. The speaker boxes were and add on to the other set and sound much fuller. The new design is nicer (integrated ) but the speaker cavity is much smaller so the sound is not as full.

    3. Lack of separate ant/cable input. My over the air HD signals are much better than what I can receive over cable. It would be nice if it could auto switch between cable and antenna.

    Otherwise love it.

  2. I just got this plasma through Amazon and the transaction could not have gone smoother. The best part is, this Hitachi HDTV is the bomb! I have never seen such a beautiful HD picture. I subscribe to Dish TV and their HD channels are superb on this tv. I highly recommend this plasma to everyone!

  3. Beautiful looking cabinet! Regular channels come in great but the HD's are not as sharp as some of the higher end models. Overall im very satisfied with this tv, looks incredible on my wall.

  4. This huge 55" plasma TV is a Cadillac at a Honda price. The TV's bezel is trimed out with real brushed aluminum and it is fairly thin for how wide it is. The picture is great, and bright, and colorful. But here is a tip. If you hook up to a satalitte or a cable box using an HDMI cable (which you should), inside the setup of the box, change the HDMI settings to output RGB. It makes the picture slightly sharper. Overall this TV is half the price of its competitors and lacks no where.

  5. I purchased one of these sets in Oct 2006, and it died on June 22,2008. The main power supply failed for unknown reasons. The unit was connected to a high end surge protector but sill managed to trip the circuit breaker it was connected to.

As of June 27,2008 its still in the shop waiting for a new power supply. There is a good possibility that it may have other issues too.

Its a great set, fantastic picture, easy to use.

  1. I bought this from Best Buy in Sep 2005 and have never had a problem with it. I use it daily and it is always on. Do yourself a favor and use good speakers with this tv. I have a Bose system that works well with it. I saw recent reviews complaining about not being able to return it or hard to install. 1. Don't buy expensive electronics from small retailers. 2. Let best Buy or someone else professionally install it. It's cheap, they do EVERYTHING and the instillation has a one year warranty. 3. If you buy something this expensive, go for extended warranty. I got 4 years from Best Buy. 4. This set is now $1,000 cheaper than when I bought it. You won't get better for the price.

  2. I have purchased a Philips 37 inch LCD from Best Buy and i purchased
the warranty with it and within 6 months the TV would not power on. I
contacted Best Buy and they reffered me to the Allens TV and the TV was
picked up by Allens TV for Repair and the TV has been in for repair for
60 days and still they have no clue whats going on. I purchased the
Best Buy Performance Service Plan and still everytime i talk to Best Buy,
they only thing they have to say is Sorry. I am really frustrated as
Best Buy has been very unhelpful in resolving the issue and putting any
pressure on the Service Station. The service center had hard time figuring part for this TV. They have ordered part 3 times and it would not work. Still i am waiting for my TV back. This is the second Philips TV i have issues with. I am never buying any Philips Product again.
    Stay away from Philips Products

  3. I'm 32 yrs old from NY, NY. Bought this tv 5 months ago at circuit city. Purchased the 5 year service plan and WOW am I glad I did. The power supply blew almost exactly 1 month ago and my tv was just repaired last night. TV would not turn on (green "ON" light would blink red 6 times).
The new part that was installed was an upgraded power supply (visibly more heat sinks, etc) so i'm hoping it doesnt happen again.
Circuit city was a complete and utter nightmare to deal with. i spent hours on the phone and kept being told basically to wait longer. It was a situation where i finally had to just start being that super irate guy on the phone, yelling at service reps.
I was told by the repair guy that he had changed these in the TV's before but that he has not been back to the same place to fix again. he also said he doesnt work on Philips any more than other TV's. He described similar issues with other brands.
So all in all i still like the TV and hope it continues to work but I'm glad I have the security of 4 1/2 more years of service protection.

  4. Purchased this television in December 2005 and at about the 18 months mark, it died. The not-so-funny thing about this is that it was just out of warranty and the repair company said that it would take approximately $2,100 in new parts to repair (I could buy a brand new version from Costco for $1,200). Apparently Philips LCD TVs are notorious for this kind of thing - bad power supply and internal boards are to blame.

The TV gave a beautiful picture and worked flawlessly right up until it failed to turn on one day - purchase one at your own risk.

  5. It lasted only 17 months before it died. Now I have to spend more than $150 to fix it. We did not even use it that often. I would not recommend to buy it. Very, very dissapointed.

  1. So far so good. We have had the DVD player for just a short while, but it seems to perform as it should. The included TV antenna has some trouble picking up signals from inside, but works good stuck on the top of the car. The unit also includes a cable TV adapter.

  2. The picture quality is great. The sound is much louder than other 10" portable DVD players that I have tested. It plays multiple types of discs, +/-R and R/W, but I have had a couple that were jittery playback, but it could be my burns that I did.

The big battery makes it stick out a little further so that it makes it hard to find a case to fit, so I ended up modifying/cutting a case to make it fit.

The only other gotcha is the input to the tuner is a flimsy connection, so if you plug your cable in at home, then the weight of the cable will make the connector go at odd angles. It still works, but I am worried about it breaking so I used the same case and cut a hole and then plugged in the adaptor, which prevents the cable from going off at the weird angles.

The battery life is not that long, about 2.5hours and there is no battery meter that I can find, so your watching it and it just stops when the battery dies.

If they added a battery meter and made the cable input more durable, I would give it five stars as for the price, this is a great product.

  3. I have had this dvd player for less than 6 months and it acts like it is 100 years old. DVD's will not play, the big and bulky battery no longer charges. Even pluged-in it spits and sputters. You press a button and nothing happens. The company is no help! BUY THE WARRANTY!!! It did work great the first 2 times I used it!

  4. I purchased this player as a Christmas gift for myself and without a doubt this must be the worst player ever made. When the player arrived it played fine for about 2 minutes then the screeen became unwatchable.

I returned the unit thinking that I simply got a "bad one", but to my dismay the second unit that was shipped to me wouldn't even turn on. On this one the power button seemed to be damaged and although I tried numerous times I never could get it to turn on. Now, after spending almost $30 on shipping these units back, I have now requested that I be issued a refund. Unfortunately, since the company I bought them from didn't bother to test the units before they sent them out (especially the second one since they knew the first one was DOA) I am stuck with the loss of the $30 I paid for shipping.

So all buyers be ware!! Don't end up like me with a lot of wasted shipping charges and no player to show for it. As a small note, I did end up purchasing a different player from a different company and so far the unit has worked fine. In case you're wondering, I bought an Initial 10.2" portable dvd player w/TV tuner.

  5. The product is very complete, TV, DVD, SD, portable... That's what i was looking for... everything for $200... good price... and functional... It works good.
