  1. I bought the projector in December 2001. The projector has some quality problems.

Lamp Explosion: The original lamp that came with the new projector was exploded after about one year of use (about 400 hours). It occurred when it was projecting a movie without any indication. Other users also experienced lamp explosions with the projector.

Difficult-to-Turn-On Problem: The projector has problems with starting up the lamp. Most of the times, when I turn on the power switch of the projector, the fan will start immediately, but the lamp does not light. It does produce some encouraging sound-the noise one hears when the lamp turns on. If you switch off the projector then switch it on again, the lamp might start. However, the problem now gets really bad for me. Almost every time when I try to use the projector, I really have to switch on/off many times in order for the lamp to show any light.

Service Problems: Right after my lamp exploded, I sent the unit back to Infocus. Infocus changed the lamp and cleaned the unit for me. But the difficult-turn-on problem got worse after the service. I called them several times, the technicians told me that they did not know the cause and suggested that I try to switch off and on to solve the problem. It did work. But what a strange way to turn a projector on! This hard to turn on problem is really annoying, so I called infocus again. The technician refused to explain what the problem is, and asked me to send Infocus US$999.99 so that they can take a look at it. Of course I did not send the projector back for them to take another look.

I asked Infocus if they know any technical flaws with the projector, and I was told that there is `none.' So apparently Infocus does not know why the projectors have this difficult-to-turn-on problem. Therefore, they might have the same problem with other projectors also.

Summary: The Infocus LP 350 has quality control problem, I do not recommend this projector. Apparently Infocus is not aware of the problem; other models might also have this problem because they share a lot of parts and design. I would definitely avoid Infocus.

  2. This projector lacks many features including A/V mute. It uses a propritary video cable that has broken on my unit twice. Had to order replacement cable from Infocus store at a premium price. Lamp life is really bad. Had two bulbs explode (yes explode and smoke)in the unit. Now I am having trouble getting another replacement lamp. If I want a new lamp I have to send it back to Infocus to get a power supply upgrade. This thing is a hunk of junk - nothing good to say about it. I will never buy an Infocus product again!

  3. I bought an LP350 about two and a half years ago. Since then, I have gone through seven lamps in two different projectors. I sent the first unit back to InFocus twice in the first year, going through four lamps in the process. The third time I sent it in, they sent me a "new" refurbished projector. The first lamp in the new unit lasted about 15 hours, a new record at the time actually... I've blown two more since then. I got at least 20 hours out of the last one, but I give up. I thought about buying one more lamp, just to be able to sell it off, but I'd feel guilty probably. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT BUY THIS PROJECTOR!

  4. We bought into the InFocus hype about 3 years ago, and this projector has been a nightmare. After a bulb explosion at 180 hours, the unit was returned for 'update' which was free as long as you purchased the 'new' design bulb at full retail. InFocus did offer to trade, but you would have to invest in another product from this company which I would not do. We purchased an absolutely great Sanyo, and use the InFocus anchor with the update as a backup. Supposedly the new design will extend bulb life, but after this experience, I would not buy an InFocus at any price.

  1. I actually made the decision to purchase this not only because of the size, HD quality and price, but mostly due to the great reviews on this thing. Read them, they really are informative on this particular item.

I have to say, the delivery service alone was fantastic. They called us before, during and after the delivery. We were impressed with that aspect even before we tore open the box and got to experience the tv itself.

Wow. This is coming from a person who can care less about televisions. I now know why people get hooked on these things. Even in the daylight, the picture is clear as a bell.
Sound is just right too. There is a speaker all along the entire bottom of the TV, so the surround sound is realistic. No enhancements needed (thankfully for the wallet).
Our first show we watched in HD was so BIG it was dizzying. Kind of like a mini-Imax theater in your home. We hooked our Xbox 360 to it and the HD games are mesmerizing.

I can't say much to add to the technical side of the reviews above and below me.
This TV was a huge value.
It does get very warm if left on all night (not something I'd recommend).

Get HD cable if you have it. Otherwise don't bother, since you'd be wasting the full potential of this thing. Big difference between HD and normal cable.

Got this for my husband who was amazed that I could get such the "perfect TV". How'd I do it? READ THE REVIEWS. TAKE NOTES. Get the right size for your home. This 46" is measured 46" from one upper corner to the opposite lower corner. Get out a tape measure and do the same to get a feel for how big you want to go. It is HUGE if you are not used to anything over 36" in old-school tv's.
Get the highest HD # out there (that 1080 p thing) and you are good to go if you are shopping around.
Also, we compared the projector versus plasma versus flat panel and came up with flat panel to be the best option.
Plasma is out if you have kids. One flying object and the screen could lose pixels (or whatever you call them). Projectors are out. Do you know how technical and huge those things still are? Wait a little longer until they get smaller and not so IF-Then -Else-ish as far as what type you need.
Flat panels - best decision we made this year so far in gadgets.
Now go read the more technical reviews and make up your own mind.

  2. We love this TV!

It's connected to our DVR by HDMI and to a LG Home Theater in a Box with an optical digital cable. Great HD picture, great sound.

  3. This TV is everything I hoped it would be. I spent a month reading every forum and review I could find before I finally picked the JVC LT-46FN97. If you read AVSForum, you will see that many highly touted brands have chronic problems (clouds, flashlights, banding, eggs, HDMI handshake problems....). In reading a 47 page thread about the JVC, none of these problems were ever mentioned. I had finally found a 46" LCD that worked.
Not only does this unit have a beautiful picture, but the sound is the best I've ever heard from a TV. My wife thought I had the home theater speakers turned on, the first time she heard it. Also, looks great in the room. The matte black finish and the clean front panel really adds to the looks of the room.
    Buy this TV!

  4. Before purchasing this TV, I had never seen it in person. I saw the 40" JVC next to a Sony and the difference was noticeable. The clarity and crispness of the picture was incredible. I read all the reviews and decided to roll the dice on the 46".

I could not be happier. It is a great TV with a great picture. The TV is partnered up with a Yamaha YSP 1100 sound projector. This combination has taken our home theater experience to another level. I would suggest getting a professional to install and make sure to get an HD box. You will not be disappointed.

    I highly recommend this TV.

  5. I purchased this TV at a military exchange in September 07 for $1700 after a manager's rebate, a first time credit card 10% off and a manufacturer's rebate (the perfect storm of sales). After getting it home and using it for several weeks, I would have paid twice that.

It has a beautiful picture. VERY dark blacks. Colors are beautiful and sharp but in 1080p, it's soft enough that it doesn't hurt your eyes during extended watching.

I would 100% recommend this TV to anyone and everyone. I have had zero problems with it, even the on screen menu that isn't very intuitive is a breeze after several operations.

  1. I wanted to replace my old 13" TV/VCR that I had in my kitchen with something that would take up less space and either mount under the cabinet or be short enough to fit on the counter and still allow me to open the cabinet door. When I saw this at Target the other night, I thought this was the solution to my problem. I loved the idea of having the TV, radio, DVD player, and CD player all in one small unit. After watching just one hour of TV, I'm taking it back. The sound quality wasn't bad, but the picture was terrible! It was blurry and it was impossible to adjust the picture to get the contrast, brightness, and tint correct. The color looked washed out, and the tint was either too yellow or too red. When we put in a DVD, the picture was better, but still not even close to adequate. I went to the Internet to see what else I could find as an alternative, and decided my best bet was to go to Best Buy and spend $90 on another tube TV without a VCR. Hopefully the lack of VCR will make it short enough to fit under the cabinet. I paid $299 for this TV and by far this is the worst picture I have ever seen on a TV, bar none. My advice, don't waste your money. I wouldn't keep this TV at half the price.

  1. I got this TV for Christmas this year and it's amazing. The picture is incredibly clear, and as the previous poster stated, the setup was extremely simple. Watching TV is an experience on this model. I love it.

  2. I bought the 37" version (LT37X887) but I believe my comments are totally relevant to the 40" version. The picture, as the other viewers point out, is superb! Sound is very good. It's New Year's day and we had a party New Year's Eve with 22 adults. Almost all commented on how crisp and detailed the picture looked in HD. This includes my son who went for the 50" Pioneer plasma and my neighbor who has the 37" plasma from Panasonic. My son can't believe it's an LCD, the picture being so crisp and clear. No apparrent problems with "black detail" or blurring with fast action scenes. On Christmas Eve, we had the burning yule log on the screen with just music playing. When my wife first saw it, she thought we had a fire in the living room.

Makes you wonder about all the discussion of Plasma versus LCD!

  3. LCD? Plasma? DLP? 1080p? After 4 months of driving myself crazy researching HDTVs, I'm happy to say I settled on the JVC 40x887. Reason #1: I've never had a problem with the numerous JVC products I've owned over the years. I cannot say enough about the beauty of this set, on or off! The SD picture is much better than I expected. The 770p HD picture is rich and punchy. I sit there in awe every time I'm in front of it:-)

Reason #2: Apparently, JVC doesn't market their line of televisions nearly as much as the other guys and the way I see it, that's more money to pour into quality. You will likely struggle to find this model on the floor but when you do, you'll see what I mean! The unit contains a Sammy panel, same one in the Sonys.

I decided to skip plasma and DLP because of flaws I deemed impossible to overcome. Burn-in, break-in periods, screen glare, changing $300 bulbs, black grass, rainbows, who needs that stuff!?! I passed on 1080p because you basically have to be a superfreak to tell the difference. I'll take the money I saved and plop it down on a new Oppo dvd player, thank you very much.

This HDTV can be had for several hundred less than comparable LCDs and I STRONGLY suggest giving it the time it deserves before pulling the trigger on your new LCD. One more thing not to be overlooked: JVC HDTVs have D.I.S.T. (Digital Image Scaling Technology)with GENESSA Picture Processing which make them one of the few to pass the 3/2 and deinterlacing tests...

  4. Pro: The picture & sound are great.

Con: when you change the channel in HD mode, you have to wait for that channel comes on before you can jump to the next one. For example: change channel 2 to 4, you have to wait for 4 comes before you can move to 5, 6 etc.

  5. I was first extremely attracted to the sexy, elegant and understated looks of this LCD TV but the rest seemed to have one important better feature... the higher contrast ratio. Until one day I saw it at Best Buy next to a super expensive LCD TV, famous brand name and they were both side by side playing the same program when I noticed blacks and grays looked exactly the same on both televisions. It seems JVC LCD tv's have an extra feature to boost blacks that is not accounted for only in the contrast ratio numbers. I WAS SOLD! After taking it home I only found a lot more to like about this tv. It has become my new computer monitor since, dvi to hdmi (computer to tv hdmi) yields an AMAZING picture... no you can't see any pixels not even if you get as close as possible, at least not with windows vista and GeForce 8, you even get the post (computer startup before logon and bios settings)! Another EXCELLENT feature I haven't seen on any other LCD TV of this size is the capability to pivot it side to side and having the circular design in the front it never seems out of square even if it's facing towards one side. The settings are endless and I'll stop here or I'll never finish. All I can say is you'll never regret this purchase!

  1. I bought this TV after two years of watching a fifteen-year-old twenty inch NEC, so naturally it benefits from the comparison. We only use it to watch DVDs and videos and we don't have a hi-def player so I don't know how it compares to other TVs in the hi-def mode, but it regular DVDs look bright, clean, and clear from a viewing distance of twelve feet. We Watched the Lord of the Rings trilogy and it showed up nicely on the 16/9 screen. The sound is tinny compared to the 20-year old Cerwin-Vega speakers through a cheap old Scott amplifier that we use when watching DVDs. For just over a thousand bucks it is a nice TV.

  2. Amazon somehow LOST this TV in transit. Rather than taking responsibility for the loss, they told me they had 10 more days to "find" it and that I should just sit and wait. I begged for a refund, which they would not give. They just kept telling me about their "policies" and how "correct" their associates were. Finally, a full two weeks after the loss, they agreed to refund the money.
The TV meanwhile (bought from Sears and in my car in 5 minutes for $300 less) is great!
Amazon: good prices, but you better hope you don't have any problems because their customer service is non-existant!

  3. Bought TV for the bedroom. I have owned it for a month. TV has excellent picture. Have HD digital cable. Picture compares favorably with 1080p Samsung in the den. DVD's also look good. Easy hookup. On screen menu easy to use. Easy to adjust settings. Sound is very good for the size of the speakers. I have been very happy with this TV.
