  1. I had looked at this TV at Best Buy, et al but Amazon had the best price, free shipping and no state tax. The TV is pretty good. The only negative is when there is a solid color which fades into a lighter shade (like in backgrounds) especially reds and oranges, there appears to be a rainbow around the lightest spot in the background. I thought it was the TV itself until I compared it to the smaller version of this same TV and it had it too. Otherwise, for the price, it has all of the requisite bells and whistles, great sound, looks good and I'm pretty happy with it.

  2. I purchased this TV in Sept. '06. On April 8th, 2007 while watching the last holes of the Masters, I heard a loud whine and then POOF, the TV was off. Then it tried to start itself over and over again. TV was gone. I called customer service next morning(9th). They referred me to a repair company that didn't get to my house until the 13th. He could not fix it. He had to order a part.several weeks went by and no one was giving me an answer other than, " the part is on backorder". Well needless to say, yesterday (29 may 07) 51 days after my TV went down, Toshiba called and said that I can continue to hold on the backorder or get my money back. I choose the money, but, it will take 4 to 6 weeks to get it. They said they will send someone in 5 to 7 Business days to pick the unit up! 5 to 7 days to get thier broke tv but 4 to 6 wks for the consumer who spent good money in the first place to get his money back. Way to go Toshiba. I will never buy a Toshiba product again. Horrible and I mean horrible customer service.

The Tv was not all that either. My friends 50" Panasonic is far superior.

  3. I have now owned this TV for over a year and still get amazed at the picture quality with Digital HD Programming. When a TV can get my wife to say WOW, it's pretty good. I originally purchased a Samsung 42" DLP HD TV and the second week of owning it the sound went out. I took the TV back, purchased this 50" Toshiba 720P Plasma, and love it. If I had anything negative to say about it is the startup time. Takes about 30 seconds to startup but the TV goes through its checks every time. I really don't mind the few second wait. The only thing that made this TV that much sweeter is that I got it on sale for $1600.00 at Best Buy when they were $2600.00 everywhere else. Shop Around and I recommend the extended service policy simply for the peace of mind due to the amount that you are already spending . What's another $300.00? Hope this helps.

    Josh

  4. I have owned this tv for a year and two months and when watching it heard a loud pop and tv went off. Took it for service and they said the scaler board is bad and they want $485 for repairing it. Did not buy the extended waranty so I am out of luck. Also recommend a good surge supressor because it seeems that is what caused the problem.

  5. We bought this TV about 3 years ago from Sears. The pic was fabulous and we were fairly happy with it even though we thought the price was excessive. Last year (just after the warranty expired) we had to have a tube (?) replaced to the tune of almost $500. We really debated over spending the money or buying a new TV. Since we had such a significant investment, we decided to repair it. Imagine our chagrin when the same thing happened again this year. So needless to say, we bought a Vizio last night and hope that we have much better luck with it.

  1. We got the TV on Oct 04, 07 and it stopped working the next day we tried it on. The lamp went completely dead.
We are returning this Toshiba TV right now. No hesitations.
You just can not tolerant the fact that after spending $1200 on a TV, it is broken directly out of the box!!!

Don't buy this, unless you want to find trouble.

  2. Great experience and price buying this tv through Amazon. Picture is great, came just as promised brand spanking new. Would buy again.

  3. This tv has great picture quality, though not quite as good as some of the other top tier tvs in the same segment, the price more then makes up for that being a few hundred dollars cheaper. I have all three consoles hooked up and all look great. Blu-Ray on the PS3 looks great specially if you use HDMI. Also, until recievers have more HDMI hook ups, this tv has enough to hold you over with three. Unfortunately, non HD sources don't look quite a good. My Wii which is hooked up through component just looks blurry. This is obviously a problem due to this sets large size, all tvs of this size share this problem with blurred images of non HD sources. I have Direct TV HD and it looks great, however, be wary since lots of the "HD" channels aren't true HD yet, just less compression then before.

I did have a problem with the bulb going out after a few weeks, however, since I'm still within the first year of warranty, they replaced it within a week at no charge. Unfortunately, you do have to send back the broken bulb which is a nuissance, but it's a small price to pay.

  4. I can't write a glowing enough review for this tv. Yes, I have a few minor quibbles... Silk Screen Effect being the only one of significance (not that significant, really) but all in all, this is a fantastic set. Accepts a 1080p/24 input (reframes to 60, but does an impeccable job) means you can watch the new Hi-Def movie formats as they were meant to be seen. Standard definition tv when moved to the 4:3 format is tolerable.

I have mine hooked up to the HD-a35 toshiba HD-DVD player and I cannot tell you how many peoples jaws have dropped.

This tv, in all honesty, was a steal!

  5. Got it in Aug. 2007, wish I would have looked here first. I didn't use it much, mostly for games and movies, not much television-watching. Tried to turn it on last night, and the screen wouldn't turn on. Eventually got a pattern of led's on the front panel that indicated lamp not working (a yellow led with red flashing). There was also a voice that came from the television that said "Lamp not working" heh. I called Toshiba, and the guy had me hang up and take the lamp out, then call him back. He asked me if I could see any damage (I couldn't see any, but didn't know what I was looking for). He said that it was probably not the bulb, but the housing, and that I should take it to the nearest service dealer (40 miles away, ugh). Felt like I was getting the runaround. I'll just give my money to some other company in the future, and be sure to check here before I do :) . Lesson learned. It's a shame, because I liked the television when it worked.

  1. 2nd bulb in 3 years, this time the replacement bulb doesn't work. Faxed them a copy of the receipt for the extended warranty replacement bulb that didn't work, checked back 5 days later to find out why we don't have a lamp yet, Toshiba couldn't read my fax and didn't bother to call me at the number in bold felt-tipped pen on the fax. Locally, they're out of stock, and we can't get a replacement for another week. DO NOT BUY THIS TV. I was told that LCD is the way to go because plasmas burn out after 4 years and there's no way to repair them. DLP bulbs cost $230 every time they burn out.

  2. I'd say the 3 star average for this tv is about right, it does have many redeeming qualities in the picture quality and size for the price, when I bought it. BUT my first bulb went out in about 9 months of pretty heavy use. The lamp setting was on high the entire time and thankfully it was still under the manufactures warranty and when i called for a new bulb one was sent within the week. I'm reading these review and writing my own now because my next bulb just went out. This time the setting was on low the entire time and the bulb did last twice as long, so I def recommend using the low setting which looks just fine, you can barely notice really. This one is thankfully covered on my extended warranty, plus they will come out and clean the mirrors etc. After reading the fine print on my best buy extended warranty it says it only covers one bulb replacement (found one for $170) and the warranty was $400. SO thinking back I would have rather just payed the $170 whenever the bulbs went out to $400 for the first one with the warranty...but i guess if anything else goes wrong it'll be covered too, but nothing has happened yet. Hope this review helps.

  3. Toshiba 52HM84 52-Inch HDTV-Ready Projection DLP TV We have gone through 4 bulbs in 3 years @ $246.24 each , new ballast was $322.66 and now we need a new Light Engine $842.13 for a grand total of $2,149.75. Are you kidding!! I have called Toshiba and all they say is I'm Sorry. Not under warranty. Garbage day is tomorrow that's where this TV is doing. DO NOT BUY ANY TOSHIBA PRODUCTS!!!!

  4. I have had this TV for 3 years and 6 months. I am replacing the bulb for the third time. Bulbs are over $200 dollars. This TV is not so great that it is worth a new bulb every year. I use the TV less that 2 hours a day. Do the math, that is less than 1000 hours per bulb. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! I repeat, DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!

  5. I got this TV refurbed and I am very happy with it. The picture quality is great. Everybody keeps complaining about the lamp, but most of them probably didn't read the manual. There are certain things that shorten the life of the lamp. They probably did all of those. Because I got it refurbed, I also got a lifetime warranty (which includes lamp replacements.) It's a good T.V., you just have to know how to treat it.

  1. I got this TV at the beginning of the year and the image looks great. Over the air HDTV is great. Unfortunately after about 8 months the TV started giving problems. The TV seams to be hotter than what I would expect and after about 2 hr of use the image will go white and will not return until it cools down (by turning it off overnight). Needless to say that this is a big problem. I am hopping that I can get it replace under warranty without too much problem but I expected better quality.

  1. I have had this set for six months now and have found nothing to disappoint. I have access to over 30 different models of LCD and Plasma HD monitors via work (we do evaluations/burn-ins for in store displays) and none are as crisp and clear as this Sony.

Broadcast 1080i HD is amazing in it's quality. Cable 1080i isn't quite as good (don't know why) but it's still wonderful.

But what is most surprising about this TV is it's ability to take non-HD signals (broadcast, cable, or DVD) and enhance them into something that looks a lot better than you thought possible.

And this is all at one of the lowest prices you will find in a HD TV set... If you don't need a thin panel display and can afford the size and weight, this Sony CRT will deliver one of the best pictures you have ever seen on an electronic device.

  2. My husband and I bought similar set a couple years back. Within one month the set wouldn't turn on. We could hear the TV powering up, the red light was blinking, but no picture - no sound. We were annoyed, but hey it was under warranty. We called Sony and started the process.

Now you would think, they produced a faulty product they should pay for everything - WRONG. We had to pay the $125 to have someone look at it AND we had to pay labor costs (and additional $200). Sony warranty only pays for parts - NOTHING ELSE! Basically, because Sony produced a faulty TV we had to pay and additional $325 (plus tax).

We though this was over, now 2 years later, our set is broken - again - with the same problem.

Needless to say, we are NEVER buying Sony product again. Don't buy this TV - it is like playing Russian roulette. Other people might be raving about this product, but you have a good chance of receiving the bullet.

By the way, I have recently learned that other people are having the exact same problem we are - with the exact same part. No recall has been made and we are all paying for repairs.

  3. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to buy this great CRT television before it goes away forever. The last Sony set to offer Super Fine Pitch technology, the picture on this TV is both sharp yet natural. The 30 inch size is not a factor if your viewing distance is 6-7 feet like mine is. It is a beautiful looking set with a dark gray front that looks classic and upgrades the appearance of any room. HD viewing is wonderful and there are enough setting choices to make SD the best it can be. If anyone is reading this and has the chance to get a 30XS955, my advice is to go for it. You won't regret it and you might be still looking at this 150 pound beauty 10 years from now.

  4. Bought the Sony Wega KD-30XS955 in 2005. After first few months, tv would not turn. Light would just blink in stand-by mode. Had to unplug from wall to get it to turn back on. This problem would occur every few weeks. Now the tv no longer receives NTSC signal. Called technical support and after 2 hours on the phone, found them to be completely useless. Took it to get repaired and was told by technician that the problem was MANY bad solder joints and that this was common with Sony. Brought tv home and it still won't receive NTSC. Now I have to lug this thing back to have it repaired again. I bought the Wega based on Consumer Reports ratings. Please, do yourselves a favor, DO NOT buy this tv, or any Sony for that matter. Do some research and you'll find out that many people are having problems with Sony tv's. And don't believe everything you read in Consumer Reports!

  5. I've been doing a lot of research lately in looking for TV's. This is definitely a good TV. CRT HDTV's are still comparable to the upper end of the LCD's today. Sony is definitely a top-end brand, so you're sure to get a good product with this TV.

BUT, why is it priced at $1,250? This doesn't seem to include shipping cost which could easily exceed $200. There are LCD TVs that are just as capable and have the same screen size as this one for around 700-800 dollars. This would be a rational price if the year was 2006, just before the CRT HDTVs were discontinued.

CRT TV's are long-lasting, so buying a used CRT HDTV isn't too risky. It's easy to find a TV as good as this one, used, for around 300-400 dollars.

Also notice that the reviews posted on the front page were written in 2005.
