- This is a truly excellent monitor. If you like Sony, you won't be disappointed by this choice.
The entire delivery process, on the other hand, was a nightmare.
Like most people, I can't be home during approximately banker's hours that most delivery companies work on. And when you're expecting a $3000 delivery, you're concerned about the details from the beginning. And the beginning is where dissatisfaction with the shipping process started.
This monitor was purchased through Amazon from TigerDirect.
It wasn't until the day after the order was confirmed with Amazon that any information regarding the order appeared on the TigerDirect website. Then, all that appeared on the TigerDirect site was an indication of the order with no shipping information. A tantalizingly labelled link stated that shipping information could be had by registering with TigerDirect. So I registered. And after handing some information over to them that I would rather not have in order to register (though they already in theory had it from Amazon - but now with my explicit permission) the link lead me to the highly informative message (read sarcasm here) that no shipping information exists on the website, but that shipping information could only be obtained via e-mail. So I waited - another day - and finally got my html-enabled e-mail confirmation stating that my package was shipped via UPS and that all I had to do was click the UPS button to track my package. Do I have to state, at this point, that there was no UPS button on the e-mail? And that there was no tracking information, either?
After calling TigerDirect I finally was able to learn that in fact my package had not been shipped via UPS, but by a shipping company called ABF.
So, I called ABF. ABF knew they had the package, but didn't have any idea where it was or when it would be delivered. They would call me. So I checked to make sure they had the right phone number. They had my home phone, which would of course be completely useless during their normal operating hours, so I gave them my cell number. Several days later, no call. So I called them. "Oh, it'll be a while," was the response. So, a day later I called again. After talking with the person on the phone trying to get some useful information, the person suddenly asked, "is this a business or residential delivery?" A full week after the order and they didn't even know that! When I told her it was a residential delivery she said, "oh, we don't do those, we hand those off to our shipping partner, ABC. Let me check... you can expect a call from them tomorrow." Tomorrow was Friday.
I waited until 5:30 ET on Friday and did not receive a call from ABC (seriously, I'm not making these names up) - nothing. So I called ABF. Now, the ABF website clearly states that their office hours are from 8 AM to 6 PM CT M-F. So I was calling 90 minutes before the office should have closed. I got the service that answers there calls after hours. I asked if they had any idea who ABC was and how I might reach them. Of course, they had no clue. Checking ABF's website after the call, however, did confirm that the package had been handed off to ABC. Well, that's useful (sorry, sarcasm again).
When I finally got hold of the ABC Monday morning (after calling ABF to get their contact information - I know, I should have asked for it as soon as I found out ABC existed) the person at ABC told me that I could expect a call that afternoon. At that point I gave them the correct phone number, because, of course, ABF had given them the wrong one.
They didn't call. So I called at 5. The person on the other end said that a delivery had been scheduled between 9AM and 1PM for the following day. My response that I could not meet the delivery and that no one had called me to set it up was met with silence. After a little more silence I said, "well, I'm sorry, but I have meetings all morning, and I'm simply not going to be there." "OK," was the response.
I got home about 90 minutes later. I found a message on my *home* answering machine - with a time stamp about 15 minutes later than I had called in the morning and when I was told to expect a call in the afternoon - requesting me to call back to schedule delivery. I also found a second message time stamped about 15 minutes after the 5PM call I made, apparently from the driver, saying please call him in the morning, let's try to work a delivery out.
So, I called at 6AM - which is actually when the office opened. "Sorry, that's out on the truck for delivery." So, I left for work. I wanted to get in early to get as much done before my meetings as I could and possibly be home for an afternoon delivery. At 6:45, as I was arriving at work, my cell phone rang. "Hi, I'm at your house with your delivery - where are you?" If someone had told me they'd attempt delivery at 6:45, I could have stayed home. Oh well.
This is now getting too long, so I'll stop here, but suffice it to say I had about 10 more extemely frustrating phone calls to and from ABC regarding this shipment before I finally took delivery. Apparently most people can just take a half-day or full-day off at literally a moments notice so that shippping companies feel they don't have to give any warning to customers.
As I said at the beginning - a nightmare.
- I've owned this monitor for about a year and half, and overall it's been very enjoyable. It's used as a PC/TV monitor. Why the 2 stars then? Because after about a year a sparkling red pixel appeared and has remained in the lower left half of the screen. As far as I know there is not a remedy for this. This might sound minor but it can be distracting while watching a HD feature within about 10' of the screen. Also for the record, it bothers me, but not the wife. If anyone knows a cure for a pixel fix for a *plasma*, please comment to this review!
The other disappointing thing was about 2 weeks ago I stepped out of the room while the TV was running and returned 5 minutes later to find the picture became very grainy and dark. I turned off the TV and turned it back on only to hear a clicking noise as if the TV was trying to turn on, but could not.
The good news is that this monitor came with a 2 year warranty. It was quite easy to get a Sony registered tech to come to the house after a quick online search(Within a week). After describing the incident to the tech over the phone, he ordered the parts he felt necessary to repair the panel and we scheduled a appointment once Sony sent him the parts. He replaced some boards in the monitor and it's back up and running as it was. Initially, the sparkling red pixel seemed to disappear after this repair; however, it seemed to re-appear about an hour after he left. It probably never left and just went un-noticed as it only appears during the transmissions of certain colors. From the bit of research I did, it would appear that this is a manufacturing defect of sorts. Also, because only one pixel affected, it's not covered under warranty. In fact, in the instruction booklet it list this as being somewhat normal, specifically red, green, and blue pixels. That is why it's important to make sure that there is a return policy of sorts that won't hurt your wallet when you purchase this monitor.
Some other thoughts are a stand or wall mount can easily add another $100-$300 to the price, and you might consider a consumer version of a plasma with a built in HD tuner or speakers. Personally I use this with my cable box tuner and surround sound speakers, and had no need for another version.
Using Component, or HDMI with HD programming is simply awesome, while the other inputs(s-video, composite, etc) are disappointing.
This monitor has an dvi port which means you needs to buy a dvi to hdmi cable, or buy the optional hdmi input module.
The remote looked like it would come with a $30 tv and looks cheaper then most $9 remotes in stores.
My first choice at the time was a Panasonic TH-50PH8UK, which seemed to be the way to go after reading countless positive reviews. However it was on backorder just about everywhere for months, and I lost patience and went with this.
Shortly after I bought the Sony, I also bought a Panasonic TH-42PH9UK(the next generation of Panasonic) for the bedroom and love it. I love them both, but have always liked the Panny more because it's setup is more user friendly, and it has been more reliable. Also, the Panasonic reads the incoming signal faster and sometimes the Sony takes a while to display the signal from the cable box. The pictures of both are pretty identical, and beat any LCD I've owned or viewed.
The last thought is you should have someone home who is capable of lifting the plasma as every unit I've received has been delivered by only one person. It's best to have two people at home capable of lifting though, as it's not the job of the delivery person to carry the plasma for you. However, all the delivery people I've dealt with have helped me get the monitor inside even though curbside is the norm. They even helped unpack it to make sure it wasn't damaged.

5 comments about Sharp Aquos LC42D62U 42-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV.
- We were planning to buy an HDTV for sometime now. My wife did a whole lot of research and we zeroed in on Sharp. Good brand, great looking TV and not as pricey as a Sony...
We have an apartment and the initial few movies took us time to get used to...then we started loving it.
A friend of ours came over and recommended that we need to get a HDMI cable. we got the cable and man what a difference!!!
The picture quality on DVD's is just awesome...I tell you this is a great TV and we love it...we bought it directly at TigerDirect..great site...good service and no complaints...
PS: Dont waste too much time in research....Sony, Sharp and Samsung should be your final three
- Since we bought this tv, we have had nothing but problems with it and with Sharp. During the first month, we returned it to the store due to a banding issue. During the second month, we called the company to use the warranty to return it again due to the same banding issue. They sent us a new tv which came with yet another banding issue and dark vertical lines that looked like a burn in. We called the company to use the warranty again and they decided to send us the new model(64U), which we just received. This is our 4th tv which is not a new one, but a refurbished one, that came without the correct mounting screws and without a power cord. The only thing Sharp said they could do for us was send us the cord & screws, so in the meantime we are left without a tv.
- I was delighted when I received my new 42" Aquos. Everything I expected and more. Unfortunately after about a week it started to experience the banding that I have read about in other reviews. I called sharp, they asked me to send about 5 or 6 digital pictures of the line and give them a couple of day to review them. Three days later I called them back and spoke with a representative who informed me tje TV was going to be exchanged and upgrade it to the LC-42D64U from the LC-42D62U that I had ordered. Because of the holiday season the shipping took a little longer than I would have liked but received my new TV in about two weeks. I was very impressed that they were so helpful and that my TV was replaced. I would not hesitate buying anything else from them.
- Keep in mind this tv is a replacement for a 13 year old 20" panasonic tv/vcr. This Aquos was a replacement for the first one I ordered. I ordered a 32" one but it arrived with a cracked screen (thank you UPS!). I contacted techforless and they said they didnt have the 32" model in stock anymore, so they cut me a deal with this one, which is from the same series. It took over a week to receive the new tv, so if you're in a hurry keep that in mind when getting an order through eagle service. I ended up paying about $900 for it. I have this tv in my bedroom, so it's a little too big. set up was very easy and the picture quality is superb. After hooking up my xbox 360, I couldnt get any sound to come out. This was fixed by purchasing an HDMI cable. Gaming is awesome on this set along with watching dvds. I dont have a Bluray player yet, so I cant comment on how good that will look.
- If you have tons of money to spend, of course get the best in the market - Sony Bravia series. If not, this TV costs a lot less, but has almost as good image quality as those.
I got a 32" Aquos first, then I fell in love with the TV. I realized it was too small. Instead of returning it, I bought another one - this one. It was an excellent decision. Now it sits elegantly in my living room and provides us entertainment every night. I use it to watch HD channels (free ones...if you have an antenna, you can receive many HD channels) and I use it to watch foreign TV shows (I have a slingbox hooked up to the TV in another country). Of course, you need to connect a pc to the TV......
Overall, I love the TV and my family LOVE it too!

- I saw this PJ in action last night. The source was a Sony BluRay DVD player and a BR pressing of Spiderman 2. The picture clarity was amazing. Rock solid image with (not surprisingly) incredible definition. I can't, however give it 5 stars. Perhaps the colour calibration was not perfect (altough Sony reps were on hand so "their bad" if they set it up poorly) - in particular the reds were far too prominent.
This is a 3 chip, native 1920x1080 unit, so no colour wheel and, hence, no rainbow effects. It also runs super quiet (again, no wheel) and pushes surprisingly little air out of the read-ported vent. The air that was coming out *was* pretty hot, so any room that hosts this bad boy should have good ventilation.
It's an attractive unit and, stealing from Apple, the "sony" logo is rear-lit when the unit is turned on. The screen was a pretty small Stewart Filmscreens Greyhawk, so contrast ratios were additionally boosted. Due to the small size, the image was exceptionally bright.
At this resolution, it was interesting to note how clearly computer generated the Spiderman scene appeared. On SD units, there's enough softening of the edges to hide the CG nature of the image and complete the illusion. At HiDef res, however, the blue-screen and CG became quite obvious.
Hollywood Actors/Actresses: beware! Your wrinkles and blemishes will soon be splashing their way across 120" HiDef screens all over the world! :)
At under $9K for a 3-chip DLP, Sony have really thrown down the gauntlet with this one. Expect competitors to follow and hopefully we'll all be able to afford something of this spec within just a few more years.

- I found an amazing deal on this TV at Conn's and decided to go out on a limb with this TV, even though I really haven't heard much about Norcent's plasmas. I'm really glad I did! It has every feature you could want, and I have been very happy with the sound quality compared to the other, more expensive plasmas I looked at. Of course, we're not talking Bose quality sound, but it's plenty for everyday TV (who really wants to hear Dora in surround sound anyway?). Also, the picture is amazing even using plain old component cables. I have heard so many complaints about TV's that cost twice as much as i paid for this one; all-in-all, you can't beat this TV.
- I purchased a Norcent PT4240hd for around $1700 in March of 2006.
I was fairly happy with this TV until it suddenly quit working after only 15 months of use. It will power on but the screen is dead.
Norcent only warrants their TV's for one year. Not a good buy when you have such a short warranty.

- I love this tv and it was such a great deal!!!!! It looks great, and there is no lag when playing my xbox 360 on it.
- Impressive TV....Great Price...Just a remarkably good deal..I have a PS3 and the games look better on this than my Samsung 42 LCD hdtv..The colors are warmer and smoother. My LCD makes it too bright and annoying. I must admit this TV is great.
- I've been researching alot over the internet the past few months for my first ever hdtv. At first I wanted to get an LCD and I've been looking at the big names like Sony, Samsung, Sharp etc, but even their 32 in. size hdtv's were over $1500! I came across this JVC HD52G887 and it had everything I wanted. It is a hd set. It has a atsc/qam tuner, It's 52 inches! It's under a 1000 dollars!!! This set is DLP which means it is projection, it's not flat in the back. When I got it home it was so easy to hook up. I plugged it in, plugged the cable connection into the back, plugged my xbox 360 and Wii into the back. I love it. I am using my standard Time Warner cable connection to this and It still looks really good! The 360 looks SO good on this set!!! The Wii on the other hand is not too pretty, although I'm not using component cables for it which I heard could help a little. The wii was not meant to look its best in 52" hd. The instruction booklet for the tv is pretty thourough. I followed the step by step of instructions of setting it up and had it working with my cable box in about 5 minutes out of the box. The remote is decent with many features including split screen, freeze, and an input button which easily let's you switch between tv mode and the different video modes that you are using your game systems for. Overall I couldn't be happier, and recommend this set to everyone!
- After many months of checking into all the different types of new HDTVs. I decided that I rear projection was the right choice for me. And BOY was I right, I LOVE MY REAR PROJECTION TV!!! I would definitely buy another.

- This tv is exactly what I needed. I purchased it for an exercise room/office. I can use it as a monitor and/or as a tv, so it saves me some space. It is also light, and the cable outlets, etc are all on the sides and the bottom, so wall-mounting would not be a problem.
The picture quality is great head-on, and from the sides as well. Looking up, though, it is terrible - so don't hang it too high on the wall.
The sound quality is fantastic. I hardly have to turn up the tv to hear it when I'm on the noisy treadmill across the room.
The picture in picture feature enables you to work on the computer and watch tv. This is one of the few features, however. It is definitely not a feature-rich item. If you want a lot of features - purchase a dedicated tv or monitor - not a combination like this one.
The manual was not very helpful, but that's alright because everything is pretty straightforward. And, the remote is just a standard remote - not too big or too small.
Overall - I am thrilled with this purchase. It was exactly what I needed!

- We got this tv at Walmart for under $600 and we couldn't be much happier. The picture is bright and crisp and it has amazing sound for such a small, and by small I mean thin, tv. It is 1080 resolution as well, at least ours is set for that. The only problem that we have with the tv, and I don't know if it's really a problem, is that when we got a new cable provider, only the HD channels are the full widescreen. The other channels are displayed in a square in the middle of the tv. My husband believes that it's from the HD cables, whereas before it was hooked up using the coaxial. Overall, it's a great tv though, we can't wait to get a ps3 hooked up to it.
