  1. Bought this TV on sale, but it has been one long headache. As another reviewer has reported, the TV has a very noisy power box which sounds like a loud whirring....I, also, called the company to complain, and they said they would send another box. A week later, they sent another of the same box. After calling the company, they had no advice. They realize that this is a design flaw, and have taken this TV off the market and discontinued it. So those who bought it, on sale, got stuck with something Viewsonic knew was a lemon. The noise is so loud at times, that you can hardly hear the TV. I will be returning the TV, but am very upset about Viewsonic's knowingly selling these off, discontinuing them, and leaving no recourse. I will be forced to buy a more expensive TV from a major manufacturer.

  2. First of all, let me say that the image quality on this monitor is terrific, at least with HDTV/component input. With analog input (cable TV or composite), the picture is grainy. The pixel response time is also not as fast as models that have come out more recently.

My main complaint is the lack of an S-video input. It is inexcusable for a TV that costs this much to not have an S-video in. It also only has 1 set of component in, whereas most HDTV's have at least 2. All of the other Viewsonic TV's in this series have S-video, why not this one?

My #2 complaint is the fan noise. This thing has an external power supply brick (the type used with laptops) which has a fan inside the brick that runs continuously when the TV is on, and sometimes when it is off! The speakers on the TV are so weak, that you can hear the fan over the TV sound almost all the time.

Before purchasing an HDTV, you also must realize that a monitor of this size will make a poor PC monitor, no matter what. Even HDTV resolutions are nowhere near the typical PC monitor resolutions, and trying to use a device that is primarily designed to be a TV as a monitor will produce poor results.

Last, the TV has issues displaying closed captions. When trying to display closed captions from a DVD, for example, the whole picture became scrambled. Plus, it sometimes "locked up" and wouldn't respond to the remote. At first I thought the problem was the remote, but it wasn't; the TV literally required a "reboot" in order to start responding again.

  3. Best monitor I have owned. For people having trouble using this as a computer monitor, use a good video card, I am running a GeForse FX 5200 with 128 MB Ram. Set the computers resolution to the monitor's native resolution (1280 X 720). The software driver will set up the refresh rate a 60hz. Reset it to 72hz manually and everything will sharpen up to a crisp picture. You will have an unbelievable monitor. I am totally impressed. My power supply is not loud at all, it's hardly audible with the sound off.

  4. I purchased this model 3yrs ago for Xmas 2004 when it was the latest technoloy.
My 1st unit stopped working after 2 months and only after a significant amount of aggrivation with customer support it was replaced under warrantee by viewsonic BUT ONLY with a rebuilt unit and I had to ship mine back to them in California first (good thing I had the box). Now that it is almost 3yrs old it will not turn on at all and the high voltage board is burnt out & not worth fixing. A product like this should last well beyond 3yrs. I certainly feel cheated and victimized. DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM AT ANY PRICE. If I could I would rate this one negative 100.
It also goes without saying that this model is now obsolete and there are much more advanced lcd hdtv out there w/ better resolution, better contrast and HDMI connectivity.

  5. I have been using the Viewsonic 2700W as a PC monitor for over 19 months and have been very happy with it. Just make sure that you have the latest driver for your video card and it will work fine with sharp screen images and text. One problem that you may encounter with the video driver is that some cards will automatically recognize the monitor and download their driver. However, that driver may have a max resolution of 1280x720 whereas many software programs are now requiring a min resolution of 1024x768 and won't work with the monitor's native resolution. So make sure your video drivers are capable of higher resolutions.

Also, the complaints about the noise from the power supply are justifiable. It is a design flaw in the FSP-180-1ADE11 but the noise is not noticable (at least with my unit) unless you demand a quiet environment to work in. My power supply became erratic and started overheating so I bought a compatible one from Shenentech that does not have a fan. Very quiet. Anyone want to buy a used power supply?

  1. I purchased this TV (same exact model) from [...]
and it broke exactly one year and two months later. It had worked perfectly and I had been very pleased with this set for the entire time and the tv was kept in EXCELLENT condition the ENTIRE time. Like others who have written similar reviews of SCEPTRE products, I had seen great reviews from others who had purchased from them so I decided that for the price and high rated reviews I would go ahead and purchase one as well. It makes sense to me now that it is very probable that the majority (or more) of these people were probably in the same boat as I and had great success with this TV within the 1-year warranty period. I have contacted both Wal-Mart and SCEPTRE to express my concern and dismay at the quality of product they are selling but was immediately disregarded as if they did not even care. This review is not to bash WALMART or AMAZON.COM but to inform consumers that this definately seems to be a KNOWN recurring issue with SCEPTRE brand electronics and it only makes sense to put a bit more money into a BETTER NAME BRAND and have a much better chance of it actually lasting more than a year than to throw $800 - $1300 down the drain. I have payed much less for TV's in the past that have lasted 20-30 years or more. [...]

  2. I bought this tv 2 years ago and the picture has gone out on it already. I have sound but no picture. Sceptre has told me I would probably need a new power inverter which would cost me $250.00 to have it fixed and that possibly that might not fix the problem. I see no reason for a tv that is supposed to be of this caliber to go out in only 2 years. They did respond to me quickly via email and by phone but this is totally unsatisfactory and they acted like it was normal. Do not buy this tv, it is definitely not worth the money. Buy another brand.

  3. We recieved our Tv Months ago and have been VERY HAPPY SINCE. We have several Tv's in our house 2 LCD and the rest CRTV. Including a 52" RCA Projection model. This TV far outshines all the rest. We even have moved out on the Patio on occasion of Races and Football games and are VERY HAPPY. The quality of the picture is un-believeable and the definition is awesome. It is as sharp outside as in. We are VERY PLEASED and are looking at another larger Sceptre LCD HDTV product purchase. THANX !! AAA+++

  4. Like other reviewer the picture went out after 2 years. Called manufacturer and said cost would be $250 to fix...!!!! I'd never buy another tv from Sceptre again. The TV is also not univeral remote compatible.

  5. I notice a lot of reviews for this set that say it started to fail after the warranty was over. I am sure that there are different results with different individual sets but mine has performed flawlessly for 3 years now.
The remote is a little odd, but the set is wonderful. I use it as a computer monitor and then switch to it for HDTV. I also have an older 42" Sony Plasma and I must say the picture on this set far outshines that one PFM42-b1
