- This projector is super bright and works just great. Plus with its absolutely unbeatable low price, you won't go wrong with this purchase!
- My first attempt of setup was setting it on the coffee table in front of me, but it seemed to keep over heating and shutting itself off to cool. Since I installed it from the ceiling, it has not over heated.
I am projecting a really nice 90" widescreen image from about 8' from the screen. I have found that using the 16:9 widescreen setting give the best image. The brightness is enough that I can have a ceiling light on behind me and it does not effect the image that much.
No PIP, but from what I hear that usually does not turn out good anyway.
No HDMI input, but the S-Video works just fine.
The remote works great. Point it almost any direction you want and it works, and the pets love the built in laser pointer.
About the only thing I would change is HDMI input. Other than that, it is just what I needed, and about a thousand dollars less than trying to buy a LCD or Plasma big enough to really create a theater experience.
- This was my first projector. I was very happy with it until one day, with no warning, it stopped working. I would turn it on, and within 5 seconds it would indicate the temp was too high and shut itself off. I contacted Viewsonic to arrange a warranty repair. Their webpage said they'd send me a unit within 48 hours. Their phone support said no units were available, I'd have to wait up to 15 days for mine to be repaired. They received mine on the 2nd. Today is the 21st and I'm being told they still don't have any replacement units, so it'll be another 7-10 days. I get the feeling I'll hear the same thing in 10 days.
I'm going to buy an Optoma today.
Update 18-Dec-07: On 4-Dec, ViewSonic offered to replace my PJ458D with a PJ558D. I agreed and then waited for it to be shipped to me. I've been waiting ever since. Every 2 days I call and they tell me that due to a new computer system they've just installed, my shipment is in limbo. Then they say they will escalate my case. When pressed for more information, the customer service reps always admit, "that's all they can do". Whenever I ask to speak to a supervisor, I am put on eternal hold (last week it was 48 minutes before I finally gave up). The saga continues.
- This is my first projector, I got it about a year ago and the way I have it setup is what you could consider "home cinema". I have a media PC hooked up to it via VGA (15 pin DSub) and a Playstation 2 hooked up via S-Video. The VGA setup comes out very crisp, for HD videos as well as HDTV. We had a superbowl party and everyone was quite impressed. The S-Video is decent, but nothing special - it's certainly better than using the yellow RCA jack. So currently I have it projecting from about 11 and a half feet away onto a white wall and the diagonal picture measurement is the equivalent of having a 100 inch TV.
The OSD menu is very helpful and the settings are pretty intuitive, from setting up the picture on slanted walls (keystone) or as a ceiling mounted projector, to correcting the color and white intensity. The ECO-mode, if it works as it claims, is such a small drop in brightness, that I have it on all the time. It's supposed to extend the lamp life by 1000 hours. I've already logged 900 hours on the lamp (another nice feature - it shows the total time the lamp has been on) and it's still running well, although I'll sometimes notice a faint flicker in the upper left corner that eventually goes away after 15 seconds or so. I'm not sure if that's from the signal or the projector itself.
The only drawback is the lack of either DVI or HDMI in. I don't want to upgrade to a digital in projector yet so I got an in-line converter from HDMI/DVI to VGA (Google HDFury) which will allow me to hookup an Xbox 360 or PS3 whenever I get one.
I'm quite pleased with the projector so far, and I would recommend it to anyone that isn't going to need a digital input, but wants a quality picture at a middle of the road price.
- It worked for 15 minutes. Let it cool -worked 10 minutes. Let it cool several days-ran for a few minutes.
Called ViewSonic May 5. It has been an ongoing mess since them. It is now August 28th. Without my approval they sent me twice the wrong model. Once they sent the right model, but it worked for 15 minutes. All the products are refurbished units. They have promised me this and that. I have been escalated. "It's in the mail" to death...I have been told they take inventory for the whole month of July. (Note: I have seen a complaint where the customer was told they do inventory for the whole month of December)
They want me to pay the $20 shipping expense for a different model than I purchased. They have my money, my asset (Pj458D)...my money spent sending units back and I have ZERO, ZILCH, NADA. Any suggestions??????????

- I bought this piece of junk in January 06 at Sears because they said tube TVs last longer than LCD or Plasma. Yes, that used to be true but with this TV Samsung has changed all that. It ran fine for exactly 20 months. Now the picture is blurry, the color fades across the spectrum from red to yellow to green and there are about 100 horizontal lines across the screen. I can't help but notice that the ones who gave this TV a positive review have owned it for much less time than those who gave it a negative one. I expect a television that costs almost $1,000.00 to last longer than 20 months without needing repair and will never buy a Samsung again.
============================================================
STAY AWAY FROM THIS TELEVISION!!!
============================================================
- We purchased the 3079 model in 2006. Although we intially loved the set, after a short time, we started experiencing focus problems which became progressively worse. After only one and a half years, the set was rendered inoperable. We were initially falsely advised by Samsung and its authorized dealer, Best Buy, that there was a 1 year warranty on the TV after I described the focus problems. We therefore took the television to a nearby repair shop who (1) confirmed that the picture tube was bad and (2) that there was actually a 2 year warranty on this part.
After several disconnects and nearly two hours, we were advised by Samsung that there was in fact a 2 year warranty on the picture tube, and that we should take it to the Samsung authorized dealer. We contacted the authorized dealer and confirmed once again that there was a 2 year warranty on the picture tube.
Incredulously, after their dealer confirmed the picture tube was bad, Samsung once again attempted to claim there was a 1 year warranty which they ultimately retracted. It turns out that the replacement part is not available and that they are unable to meet their contractual obligations to repair the set. Instead, Samsung offers us a "special deal" to purchase a new TV. After some research, I confirmed that I could get the same "special deal" on a new set via Ebay. After spending over $900 (price of set plus cost of repair shop evaluations) and hours of run around, Samsung has repeatedly attempted to avoid its contractual obligations by using deceptive practices. Samsung has repeatedly given us conflicting advice and we have literally been hung up on by customer service representatives simply because we wanted to speak with a supervisor. By the way, "supervisors" are never available, instead ask to elevate the issue to "ECR" if necessary.
For those who are actually happy with this product, you must be of the fortunate few who did not purchase a defective product (or perhaps the set has not failed yet) and have not needed to deal with Samsung's customer service. By the way, the service center has confirmed that ALL of the Slimfit models have had MAJOR problems, including but not limited to problems with the picture tube. If not under warranty, this part would cost nearly $300 plus $180 labor.
As you can see, I would not recommend any of the Samsung Slimfit models and would be reluctant to ever purchase from Samsung again. We hope that this review will help someone not to repeat our mistake in trusting Samsung!
- I brough this TV from BB about 2 years ago. Initially, I had no problems and the picture quality was awesome. But after a year of ownership it started to randomly cut itself off and on for no apparent reason. No help or assistance from Samsung. I unfortunately did not get the extended warranty. I always thought Samsung made good products but not anymore. This TV is only good for a year if your lucky. DO NOT BUY!!
- I got this 2 years ago when my old sony of 15 years went poof. At the time I did not have the money for a Plasma or LCD and thought this would be a good option. Well The HDTV pic was ok, better then my old sony. But lot of drawbacks. Line bending. Plus despite sheilded monitors the screen got purplish on the top right. Nice blacks however. Worst problem was the line bending. Destoryed teh HD image. Even the side bars for a 4:3 pic were bent. Once I noticed it it was all I could see. I replaced this TV after to years for a plasma. Now I really see that despite both being HDTV's the Plasma takes the cake.
- I've had this TV for about 2.5 years. Just after a year (out of warranty), it got a green cast to the upper right corner. Then the letterbox edges got wonky (non-straight, weirdly curved). Then I got another green cast in the lower left hand corner. Yesterday it just died. I searched the model number on the internet and all these problems are apparently common.
When it worked, the HD image was quite clear and it was a great TV. Now it's dead. Remember when TVs lasted 10 or 20 years, not 2?

- Have had this TV almost 2 weeks. The picture is great, do not have the hd cable box hook-up as yet, but picture is still great. Fantastic for movies. The major setback is the sound. Listening to any music channels the bass must be turned off totally. The thumping sound is really bad when music is being played. I hope to get surround sound soon to take care of this problem. Another problem is the remote. Has a slide indicator on the side of the remote to switch to tv, cable, dvd etc....It is pretty hard to pick up the remote without accidentally changing this switch. Should have moved to the front of the remote. All in all pretty satisfied.
- It was a rare moment when my Toshiba 32HL95 arrived complete with all necessary cables and, when plugged in, displayed a picture of clarity and high definition that I had never seen before. We love our Toshiba.
- horrible picture ! . loud humming noise. hdtv looks ok, regular tv looks really really bad. Save your money !
- not a bad system, slow reaction to the remote..picture clear and quite a few nice features overall
- I bought this LCD TV last week, compare with the Sony 32SA10 so far I owned, this one is better than Sony's. especailly by HDMI input, two inputs of component is convenient as well.

- my son has had problems with this tv first the tv would not respond to the remote control it would not turn off he contacted the company they told him to unplug it then plug it back in that solved the problem now the screen acts up the picture is discolored he contacted them again but he still has not heard from them yet
- I've had this for about six weeks, and I can tell you that while the brand isn't very glamorous, and the speakers don't produce the best sound, this is a very versatile TV with an amazing picture, and I love mine.
First off, mine is connected via coax to a small indoor antenna, and I get all four networks in HD, and around 12 other channels in my area (in both regular def and HD). The onscreen program guide works well. There are a lot of inputs, including Coax, DVI, HDMI, D-SUB (VGA), S-Video, and Component. The remote is simple and effective, and the picture quality is bright with great color. It's a very smart buy.
I have had no problems with picture quality or the remote. This is a great low cost widescreen HD TV.
- small channel display and very slow to turn on until warmed up. Ditto for channel changing.
