  1. PURCHASE YOUR EPSON PRODUCT THROUGH AN AUTHORIZED DEALER OR FROM EPSON DIRECTLY.

This is not a review of this product, but rather a word to the wise... Two and half months after my purchase of an Epson 10000XL scanner through Amazon, it stopped working. Through the followup and tech support process I learned that, because I purchased through Amazon, the manufacturer nor the seller would honor the 1 year warranty. Epson's position is that Amazon is not an authorized seller and that they merely act as broker for what can often be re-furbished or second hand merchandise.

So, should your purchase break or malfunction, as mine did, you are out of luck with regard to warranty.

    This lesson cost me $2400.00

3 comments about Sony KDF-E60A20 60-Inch LCD Rear Projection Television.
  1. I just received this television and finally have it working. Although my experience so far has been with the local HD channels using an over the air HD antenna, it has still proven its worth the money.
I come home every night after work wanting to watch TV on a "nice" TV. Sure there might be minor tweaks that you can do to enhance the picture but come on, It's not that noticable and definately not worth $500 to get a guy to come tune it for you. Out of the box this TV does very well. The red is a little sharp but its nothing you cant easily take care of going through the settings. The overall picture quality is absolutely beautiful when watching HD TV. I got to see our Minnesota Vikings get the crap beaten out of them by the Bengals with outstanding quality.
With the large screen size that it has, watching TV series programs like "Lost" etc. really make a difference.
I also purchased the GW12 TV Stand and it looks amazing in the house. Be aware how ever to make sure you have enough room for the TV in your living room. I had to move some of my couches back to the dining room to get a more comfortable viewing distance, but since I know Ill be moving out soon I knew it wouldnt be too bad for too long. But make sure you have at least 12 feet of distance to the TV screen. Remember that the TV is about 3 feet deep and that you will want to calculate that into your measurements as well. The Sony TV stand is shaped perfectly for the TV so there's no excessive space taken up.
To use the full power of the TV I purchased the HD DVR from Direct TV to be able to record everything I miss and still be able to watch it in HD. HD programs are much more clear, vivid and sharper than what they looked like on your standard TV.
One con is the lack of picture in picture. You'd think it would be nice with a TV this big but I suppose Sony had a reason for dropping it.
The Speakers are pretty nice for the size of the TV but with a screen that big you should consider purchasing a home theater system or receiver set with seperate speakers.
The remote control is kind of corny looking but hey its not the main point here.
TV is also very light weight for its size and ways at about 150lbs.

Overall I definately love this TV and think it was well worth the price. I looked into buying a DLP but it just didnt catch my eye as much as this rear projection LCD. Sony has definately improved the darkness of the black on the LCD TV's knowing that there were problems in the past.

  2. This television is great! The screen size and enhanced/adjustable surround sound, make your tv viewing experience/gaming experience....LIFELIKE! Just like the actual theater! We recently upgraded from a normal television to this! The high quality sound and picture are unreal!!!!! You do not need surround sound or enhanced/detached speakers with the built in sound system. We love it! It is PERFECT!!!!!!

  3. I've always loved Sony TVs. Had a 48" model for about 15 years and just traded up to this 60" hi-def model. OMG! It's spectacular ... from the size (better than being in a movie theater) to the exceptional picture quality to the brilliance of clarity and color to the overall experience. Also, got an unbelievable price from BrandsMart ... $1,298! Whatever you pay for this, it's worth it if you're a TV junkie ... especially for sports. Even golf is exciting to watch.

4 comments about Toshiba 27A50 27" TV.
  1. I purchased the Toshiba 27A50 because of a recomedation from a television repair man who worked for a firm that sold Zenith electronics. He had thirty years experence in television repair and felt among other things that Toshiba had excellent color reproduction. Well, I could not think of a better reason to purchase the Toshiba and I might add he was absolutety right. I like my Toshiba 27A50 very much! I might add I shopped around and found the best and least expensive place to purchase the Tosiba was at Amazon.

  2. Let me start by saying that the Toshiba I now have is excellent. My first TWO sets, however, had issues. The first emitted a high frequency hum (squeal to be more precise) which made viewing a miserable experience, and the second had severe picture problems.

I went through the company's warranty to fix both problems, and after having the televisions out of my house for a total period of six weeks out of three months, I finally received the set I now have.

During this period, Toshiba reps claimed: that the only person that should be able to hear the sound would be my wife because women hear higher pitched sounds, that since I already had one television replaced that they would not replace another regardless of warranty, that the problems were caused by me or made up, etc. All these claims without even looking at the television. Their servicing agent was miserable.

Overall, this was a bad experience to say the least, and although I'm not willing to say that I would never buy a Toshiba again, one should think about their actions before buying.

  3. I wrote a glowing review about the Toshiba 27A50 but have since had a problem with poor warrany service. I had to return the 27A50 to the company for full refund after four months of trying to resolve the situation. I am sorry to say considering the problems,I doubt that I would purchase another Tosiba product.

  4. When I was in the market for a television, I really liked this model (Toshiba 27A50) for my budget. The 27 inch picture filled up my entertainment stand, forcing me to get a bigger one. The picture quality and sound are great. But anything was better than what I was replacing. This TV has a cool Picture-in-Picture feature that I really love. Although, at first, it was somewhat difficult to get it to work with my cable box and VCR. This feature keeps me and my wife on even ground. I can watch the game in the PIP window, while she watches her shows. You can swap back and forth very easily. This TV also has 'Colorstream' technology. This allows you to connect other components, such as a DVD player with 'Colorstream', to the TV to enhance the picture and performance. There are two inputs for components in the back of the TV. I like this setup. I can connect my DVD to the 'Colorstream' component video. Then connect my VCR to the other input. This way you don't have to connect your components to each other. They all go directly to the TV. The remote control is not the greatest. It has a slide bar on the left side to switch between TV, cable TV and VCR. Then you use the same buttons depending on what the switch is set on. Sometimes this switch has a mind of it's own. It gets positioned between the TV and cable TV settings then you change a channel (thinking its the cable TV channel) and the TV channel changes. Sometimes this gets to be annoying, but for the most part it's not that bad. The remote does glow in the dark, but you can barely see the buttons.

  1. I have had this set for six months now and have found nothing to disappoint. I have access to over 30 different models of LCD and Plasma HD monitors via work (we do evaluations/burn-ins for in store displays) and none are as crisp and clear as this Sony.

Broadcast 1080i HD is amazing in it's quality. Cable 1080i isn't quite as good (don't know why) but it's still wonderful.

But what is most surprising about this TV is it's ability to take non-HD signals (broadcast, cable, or DVD) and enhance them into something that looks a lot better than you thought possible.

And this is all at one of the lowest prices you will find in a HD TV set... If you don't need a thin panel display and can afford the size and weight, this Sony CRT will deliver one of the best pictures you have ever seen on an electronic device.

  2. My husband and I bought similar set a couple years back. Within one month the set wouldn't turn on. We could hear the TV powering up, the red light was blinking, but no picture - no sound. We were annoyed, but hey it was under warranty. We called Sony and started the process.

Now you would think, they produced a faulty product they should pay for everything - WRONG. We had to pay the $125 to have someone look at it AND we had to pay labor costs (and additional $200). Sony warranty only pays for parts - NOTHING ELSE! Basically, because Sony produced a faulty TV we had to pay and additional $325 (plus tax).

We though this was over, now 2 years later, our set is broken - again - with the same problem.

Needless to say, we are NEVER buying Sony product again. Don't buy this TV - it is like playing Russian roulette. Other people might be raving about this product, but you have a good chance of receiving the bullet.

By the way, I have recently learned that other people are having the exact same problem we are - with the exact same part. No recall has been made and we are all paying for repairs.

  3. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to buy this great CRT television before it goes away forever. The last Sony set to offer Super Fine Pitch technology, the picture on this TV is both sharp yet natural. The 30 inch size is not a factor if your viewing distance is 6-7 feet like mine is. It is a beautiful looking set with a dark gray front that looks classic and upgrades the appearance of any room. HD viewing is wonderful and there are enough setting choices to make SD the best it can be. If anyone is reading this and has the chance to get a 30XS955, my advice is to go for it. You won't regret it and you might be still looking at this 150 pound beauty 10 years from now.

  4. Bought the Sony Wega KD-30XS955 in 2005. After first few months, tv would not turn. Light would just blink in stand-by mode. Had to unplug from wall to get it to turn back on. This problem would occur every few weeks. Now the tv no longer receives NTSC signal. Called technical support and after 2 hours on the phone, found them to be completely useless. Took it to get repaired and was told by technician that the problem was MANY bad solder joints and that this was common with Sony. Brought tv home and it still won't receive NTSC. Now I have to lug this thing back to have it repaired again. I bought the Wega based on Consumer Reports ratings. Please, do yourselves a favor, DO NOT buy this tv, or any Sony for that matter. Do some research and you'll find out that many people are having problems with Sony tv's. And don't believe everything you read in Consumer Reports!

  5. I've been doing a lot of research lately in looking for TV's. This is definitely a good TV. CRT HDTV's are still comparable to the upper end of the LCD's today. Sony is definitely a top-end brand, so you're sure to get a good product with this TV.

BUT, why is it priced at $1,250? This doesn't seem to include shipping cost which could easily exceed $200. There are LCD TVs that are just as capable and have the same screen size as this one for around 700-800 dollars. This would be a rational price if the year was 2006, just before the CRT HDTVs were discontinued.

CRT TV's are long-lasting, so buying a used CRT HDTV isn't too risky. It's easy to find a TV as good as this one, used, for around 300-400 dollars.

Also notice that the reviews posted on the front page were written in 2005.

  1. I saw this PJ in action last night. The source was a Sony BluRay DVD player and a BR pressing of Spiderman 2. The picture clarity was amazing. Rock solid image with (not surprisingly) incredible definition. I can't, however give it 5 stars. Perhaps the colour calibration was not perfect (altough Sony reps were on hand so "their bad" if they set it up poorly) - in particular the reds were far too prominent.

This is a 3 chip, native 1920x1080 unit, so no colour wheel and, hence, no rainbow effects. It also runs super quiet (again, no wheel) and pushes surprisingly little air out of the read-ported vent. The air that was coming out *was* pretty hot, so any room that hosts this bad boy should have good ventilation.

It's an attractive unit and, stealing from Apple, the "sony" logo is rear-lit when the unit is turned on. The screen was a pretty small Stewart Filmscreens Greyhawk, so contrast ratios were additionally boosted. Due to the small size, the image was exceptionally bright.

At this resolution, it was interesting to note how clearly computer generated the Spiderman scene appeared. On SD units, there's enough softening of the edges to hide the CG nature of the image and complete the illusion. At HiDef res, however, the blue-screen and CG became quite obvious.

Hollywood Actors/Actresses: beware! Your wrinkles and blemishes will soon be splashing their way across 120" HiDef screens all over the world! :)

At under $9K for a 3-chip DLP, Sony have really thrown down the gauntlet with this one. Expect competitors to follow and hopefully we'll all be able to afford something of this spec within just a few more years.
