2 comments about Samsung LN37A550 37-inch 1080p LCD HDTV.
- I've had this TV for a couple weeks now, and it looks like Samsung really scores with this one. Great price and a stunning picture, with deep blacks, fast response and good off-angle viewing. And absolutely none of the backlight leakage or "clouding" problems that so many buyers report (correctly) with otherwise fine Sony models. The one complaint you're likely to see in reviews of this set is that the speakers sound thin, and that's a legitimate gripe. My three-year-old Panasonic 32-inch sounds much better. So my rating is actually about 4.5, but the picture is so fine I'm willing to round up. In my case, I plugged a set of Klipsch Groove powered speakers ($92 at Amazon) into the headphone jack, and problem solved. Many of you will have external sound systems anyway.
If you can afford the $500 difference, you might want to wait a few weeks till Panasonic's new high-end TC-37LZ800 comes out, but if you go with this Samsung I don't think it'll disappoint you.
- I've had this set for a little over a week, and I'm delighted with it so far. This is the first HDTV I've owned, and in preparation for buying it I did a lot of research into the different technologies available. My principle considerations were: A) A maximum size of 40", as I only have a small viewing distance (and a wife who didn't want a 2-ton altar of gleaming black plastic in her living room) B) A set that was going to look great for movies and video games, and C) price - not more than $1,000. The other major concern was having a fragile thing like this shipped, as I really didn't want to have to return it (at my cost) if there was a problem. I'm happy to say my whole experience with this model has been excellent.
In terms of the set design, it's pretty sleek and minimal. It does have a glossy black bevel (I would have preferred matte) but overall it looks very nice and simple. There is a side panel with the third of 3 HDMI connections, and the only composite jacks, all of which are hidden from the front.
Currently I'm running Time Warner HD cable (720p-1080i) through component, and an Xbox 360, outputting at 1080p, also over component. Both blew me away (this is my first HDTV after all), and I was especially taken with the 1080p signal from the 360 - rich blacks and vibrant colors, clear, lag-free images in fast games and really crisp details. Compared to my previous TV, some games now have an almost overwhelming amount of detail! Just for the record, I honestly can't speak to HDMI quality as I currently don't have the cables. So far I've been very impressed with component connections.
I calibrated the set using the THX optimizer that comes free with Finding Nemo DVD, and I'm happy with the results. Even my wife, who claims to not usually notice the difference between TVs had the first reaction of "Wow, that picture is amazing", so you can't say fairer than that.
There are plenty of different connections, including optical audio out, which is great. I have to agree with other reviewers that the sound quality from the set itself is thin and tinny, but then again I listen to audio for movies etc. through my receiver.
I honestly can't believe I'm getting these results for just over $1,000. I did a fair amount of standing like a zombie in Best Buy, comparing sets, and other than the screen size a regular Joe like me has been hard pressed to spot much difference in $2,000+ TVs.
A note on the shipping - I ordered through Amazon and received their White-Glove delivery, fulfilled by Ceva Logistics. I ordered on a Friday evening - my TV arrived the following Tuesday - a week ahead of schedule. The delivery person was 30 minutes EARLY, and patiently helped me test the set. Your experience may vary, but I was thrilled. A+ all round.

5 comments about Samsung PN50A550 50-inch 1080p Plasma HDTV.
- I'll start off by saying that i dont know much about HDTV. I have been using HD cable box on a 30" Samsung picture tube HDTV (1080i). I did like that picture and the sound on my connected surround sound. When i saw that best buy had 3 yrs, no interest financing, i just had to go for it, even though i found no reviews for this particular samsung model/tv. I saw reviews for the older models from samsung on different websites, so assuming that THIS tv has to be an improvement i told my family to buy it, and i also bought it for myself. Being a plasma i am still in the process of breaking the tv in. I reduced the brightness, cell light to 50% and 5. The only thing/control that is around normal is contrast at 90%. I saw Lord of the Rings on "TNT" HD and all i have to say even with my toned down setting for the tv till the breakdown period (approx 200 hrs)is OMG. The picture was just amazing, really it was as compared to the picture tube hdtv. Maybe its the bigger size but it did blow me away. Regardless of size, the colors, black levels etc is what i looked for. I am not sure how the experts will rate this TV as, but i am very happy with my purchase. Its money well spent and i'll be happy for years to come. This TV does let you change advanced settings for picture if you so choose. I skipped on the professional calibration. Some folks may want it, and rightly so, but i believe that i can get the picture which suits me, in my house for my needs.
I will probably have to update my review after the break in period. By the break in period i just mean to keep the settings low for the first 200 hrs approximately.
I am enjoying my TV and it seems darn good. I hope and am sure that you'll enjoy the performance of this tv if you choose to buy it. I do belive in Samsung, that they are creating a world class product. I just dont see the need of spending twice the $ for a pioneer plasma. I am sure its a little better but not value for the $ as the Samsung provides.
Update a week later: Yes, the tv is performing more than what i expected. Also check the best buy website for more reviews for this particular tv. I am not the only one blown away by it.
UPDATE AFTER A MONTH: This TV has blown me away. More than what i could have expected from a big screen tv. I had been leaning for a LCD tv, but when i saw this, anyway i am SOOOOOO GLAD i bought this TV.
I agree with another reviewer here, to calibrate your TV but according to your viewing conditons. This TV has been well reviewed by other websites, but you should calibrate as you deem the picture to be fit to YOUR eyes. Yes, disable all electronic anhancements and then change the numerous setting available on this TV for as you deem fit.
The only thing i can't comment on too much is sound. I usually use my surround sound but do have to listen to the tv speakers when using with my dish network connection. I have HD cable from time warmer along with SD dish network. Of course the SD picture doesn't compare with the HD picture but this TV does much better in showing me SD that a older SD picture tube TV i was originally using for the dish network connection.
In the end, awesome picture, very good sound, excellent price for this TV from samsung and the fact that it's Samsung, should make you feel confident in spending your hard earned $'s on a TV.
Good luck, i am sure that you'll enjoy and love this TV if you choose to buy this.
- This is my second review for this panel! The first one was lost! (Frustrating it was!!!)
First off Amazon has kept their promise with their Post-Order Price Guarantee. Delivery was prompt and the white glove delivery people were like, "This is the best condition a tv box has ever came through their shipping company". They did like Amazon said...they'll bring it in, unpack it, set it up where you want it and take the box away! One of the many reasons why I shop from Amazon!
Anyways, the plasma panel, PN50A550 is as good as I thought it was. Being a techie, I tested this thing to its full potential for a couple of weeks and I have to say that I am really impressed with the capabilities of this plasma! There are lots of great things about this plasma and I will address some questions that people have had with plasmas and this particular model...and from its predecessor, the 5084.
Color and black levels:
The factory settings are almost OK if you don't know how to calibrate plasmas of this caliber. But if you can calibrate it yourself or spend money to get a pro to do it then PLEASE do so! Each source has its own independent set of Dynamic/Standard/Movie settings... which is great because each source has a different video quality feed. You must remember to calibrate it via the room type you have. So for bright rooms I used Dynamic (remembering to turn off any dynamic contrast settings that will lessen the performance of this plasma). I used Dynamic for daytime because I can utilize the DNIe+ option. For dark/dim lighting, I calibrated it using the Movie setting. After spending a good time on 3 sources (DVD, CABLE HD and the Wii) the video feed is mesmerizing! I tested the settings with 300, The Incredibles and Die Hard, each movie for its different characteristics. Remember not to use any dynamic contrasting when you calibrate, no need for it....ask any pro! (btw...don't use any of the E-Mode settings)
Buzzing:
There was an issue with some 5084's having a loud buzzing sound. As of my unit, the A550 has no LOUD buzz. It has a normal, very minute buzz that you cant even here unless your ear is to the back panel.
Heat:
This model is a LOT cooler to touch than the 5084. I read it's because of the better placement of the inner "guts". I have touched the sides and the top. Of course the top is the hottest spot but this thing doesn't emit as much heat as the 5084. That's a plus! Less heat = less energy.
Burn In/ Image Retention / Ghost images:
I have TRIED to produce burn in images with the A550(remember that I have calibrated settings and not factory)...and it's really hard. The anti-burn in settings that come with this plasma works wonders and has options to if you did have burn in, you can get rid of it. But use your head, if your have dynamic settings on and your brightness level is 55+....you're probably are going to get burn-in. There are so many ways to avoid it.
Speakers:
I only heard the speakers when I first turned on the A550. The Samsung chime tuned its way letting me know its presence. After that, I turned them off and used my amplifier to produce the sound to outboard speakers. The only reason there are speakers on plasmas/ LCDs this size is because the consumer does not invest in a home theatre system right away. I always thought....BIG pictures need BIG sound.
All in all, this is a wonderful plasma. I even think in some ways it is better than the highly praised Kuro. I am very impressed with what this plasma has to offer and I love the way it has that "WOW!" factor when people see it for the first time. I'd have to say SD channels aren't the best but they are ok for what they are. People ask me all the time why I chose plasma over LCD? Look at one side by side and tell me which one you want to invest your money into....plasma all the way. .
Update:
I finally used the Wiselink! I connected both a Fujifilm Finepix F50fd 12MP Digital Camera with 3 x Optical Image Stabilization and a Sony Alpha A100 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only). It recognized both and I got to show off some pics from various shoots I did over the weekend! Never knew how great something looked at "poster" image sizes!!! The A550 is GREAT!
My friend brought over his new toy, the Apple MacBook Pro MB133LL/A 15.4" Laptop (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 2 GB RAM, 200 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD SuperDrive), and we hooked it up! It was one thing to show off the new mac book pro....but on the 50incher...oh my god it was awesome! PLUS PLUS PLUS!!!!
- Is there really a noticeable difference between 1080i and 1080p? You bet!!! And the Samsung PN50A550S 50-inch 1080p Plasma HDTV shows off the difference brilliantly.
First let me say how pleased my experience with ordering the TV on Amazon was. I ordered it on a Monday and it was delivered in 5 days...on a Saturday!
Okay, back to the TV.
The picture is magnificent. As I said earlier, there is a real difference between 1080i and 1080p. For the past three years I'd been watching on a 1080i maximum Hitachi Plasma, and I thought it really couldn't get much better. But it can.
1080p Blu Ray discs and Playstation 3 games in 1080p are both vividly more defined on the Samsung than on my Hitachi. At this time cable looks about the same, because the highest definition that my cable company (Cablevision) is broadcasting is 1080i. You can set the Samsung's picture to Standard (for a TV placed in a normal environment), Movie (for dark rooms) or Dynamic (for bright rooms). There are (several) other settings that the factory has pre-set and all look great, but you're free to manually adjust just about everything, and on that note....
I did have one issue that was really bumming me out. At the very bottom of the face of the TV is the Samsung logo, and directly below that is a relatively oversize, bluish, bright LED light that serves what purpose I have no idea...power indicator...decoration maybe? All that dumb light served to me was distraction; my eyes were drawn to it all the time, especially with the lights lowered while watching a movie. So I called Samsung and asked about it; I was sure that there would be no way to turn it off....but I was wrong! Customer service answered the phone with no wait after navigating briefly through a menu in order to get me to the TV people. The guy put me on hold for a minute and came back to tell me how to turn (what he agreed to be) "the very annoying" light off (the instruction also happens to be on page 67 of the User Manual). So no more annoying light!
I have set the TV's speakers to off, so I can't comment on sound. I use a Home Theater receiver in a room set up for Surround; the sound connections for the two devices (an HD Cable Box and a PlayStation 3 (60GB)) that I have go directly to my receiver (I think it's this one Onkyo TX-SR605 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver).
The TV has a USB port (called WISELINK) that lets you play MP3s & view pictures from a USB-flash-drive (which I'll probably never do either of on the TV), but importantly if/when Samsung upgrades the TV's firmware, you can download upgrades to a file on your PC, load the upgrade onto a USB drive and connect the USB drive to the TV to upload the upgrade (all explained in the User Manual).
So I am really stoked about my new Samsung PN50A550S 50-inch 1080p TV. I try hard to get to the gym more often or just get more outside activities into my everyday routine, but this TV is gonna make a couch potato out of me for sure.
- Let me start of by making some of you feel a little better about buying a major purchase online. I was very skeptical about having this delivered safe and on-time, but the $400+ I was saving from BB, CC & other local retailers was enough to swing me. I bought my PN50A550 from Amazon on Wed. 4/16 for $1849.98. CEVA had picked it up by the end of the day and had it on its way to me.
I called CEVA on Friday 4/18 at about 4:00pm and they told me the TV had arrived on the dock that morning. I'm not sure when they had planned on calling me to sched. delivery, but since they were more than friendly I ignored that minor gripe. They offered to deliver it Saturday, but my sched. was full, so i opted for Monday b/n 11-3.
Sure enough they arrived at 11:01, carried it in my house, unpacked it, took the time to set it up, make sure everything worked and was in good condition and could not have left me happier.
Since DirecTV never showed up the same day for their dish and receiver upgrade, I cannot comment on the HD picture as of yet, but i will be sure to post my views on the TV once they do. SD looks better than expected though; for what it's worth. And the set-up menu is easy to navigate and very descriptive. The remote has large buttons that all illuminate and the manual is very well written. It has everything you should need to know and not a lot of what you dont.
One more thing...since i placed my order, Amazon has twice since lowered their price. However, i simply called in to their C.S. and they were more than happy to credit my the difference both times. I believe i have 90days that they will protect their price. Thank you Amazon...you definately came through with flying colors.
**ok, HD finally hooked up and the picture quality is MIND BLOWING! Spent hrs watching discovery and animal planet. Can't wait to get ps3, although I can't imagine being much happier.
Stop shopping right now...trust me, you will be happy with this plasma! Plenty of settings available if you are in to tweeeking the pq. Blacks are exactly what i was looking for. No IR, loud noises or extreme heat. The sound is good enough that you don't notice they are TV speakers. Using the CNet settings, although movie mode is pretty close out of the box. Honestly, the only complaint i have is that i waited as long as i did to decide on this one.
- I have had a similar experience as the last person to review. Both Amazon and CEVA have been awesome. Giving the best price, including price reductions (within 30 days not 90) and very professional 'white glove' delivery.
I am over-joyed with the TV itself. Currently watching Spidey 3 on the PS3 and the picture is like crystal. Could not be happier!

5 comments about Samsung LNT5271F 52-inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV.
- We saw the LNT5271F at Best Buy and fell in love with the amazing picture. You feel like you are actually there rather than watching the action. Everyone who sees our Samsung is jealous. Can't see how any TV can have a better picture, no matter what brand or price. Although the sound is very good, we went the whole nine yards and added a Yamaha surround sound system and a PlayStation 3 Blu-ray system. We ordered our Samsung online from Amazon and were very pleased with the price ($1,000 cheaper than Best Buy) and delivery. Don't be fooled by other online companys. If they are cheaper than Amazon, they are dropping your TV at the curb or not including everything with the TV. (One company wanted $300 for the pedestal stand that is shown in the picture. Guess we were supposed to take turns holding it up while the other person watched.) This is the best purchase we have ever made. We are in TV-viewing heaven!
- Great technology, and a fantastic TV while it works. I was truly amazed at the video quality from this unit. Unfortunately great ideals are not followed up by superior materails, workmanship or customer service. After 90 days, my unit like many others I have read about began to develop a line of dead pixles in the screen. It started as a 2 inch vertical line to the right side of the panel, and within a few days grew from top to bottom. Amazon was great, they did what they could do, but they are not the manaufacturer. When I contacted Samsung, I requested an exchange as it is only 90 days old and I thought a repair would not be justified. They will not stand behind the product, they will only send a sublet repair tech to my home to replace the LCD panel, and I have to have it removed fromt the wall and reinstalled at my own expense. The bottom line is, stick with Sony or Panasonic. These units have superior workmanship, value and durability. To send someone to my home, make me pay $200.00 to remove the unit from the wall, tear apart a brand new TV and throw parts at it is horrible customer service. It is being penny wise and dollar foolish at the expense of countless consumers. Oh...to make matters even worse, read the other reviews here, after the repair it happens again and again.... No wonder they just released LNT52a650.
- I should have bought this during Xmas but I assumed the price would keep dropping, I was wrong. I had to wait another 4 months until it dropped back down to $2,300. I snagged it up without hesitation. Though I was aware of the dead pixel line that plagued the other reviewers, I was going to take a chance (plus it came with a free Samsung upconverter and free shipping, which was not offered before).
It arrived via CEVA freight (formerly Eagle shipping) a week later. They delivered it first thing in the morning, unboxed it, put it on my stand and powered it up for me. No damage and no dead pixels. Boy was i relieved.
I don't have a Bluray yet but the Comcast HD movies look great! Even the Blue Planet DVD version with the upconverter looked amazing!
I hope it'll last. I kept the box just in case.
- I've had the TV for about two weeks now. I got a like new Refurbished 5271 unit for around 1750.00. CEVA delivery... well I will Speak of them later. The TV itself was basically new. The only way I could tell it had been returned was the bag in which the remote and model book were opened. The TV itself was spotless. Already has the newest firmware installed. 120Hz picture is very sharp and clean with just the cable wire hooked up. I get about 10 free HD channels with at 1080i with my basic cable that I use primarily for the internet and for TV in the kids rooms (as of now I have SD DirecTV... will order 1080P HD DirecTV before Football starts back). This TV puts my 32 LG (1 1/2 yrs old) to shame. PS3 Blue Ray is so clear and realistic, it takes getting used to. I have had no TBE problems watching NBA playoffs or PS3 gaming UT3/GTA IV). TV took about 2 weeks to deliver after purchase(I was advised via email that they were out of like new/refurbished units). CEVA Delivery called on a Monday morning at 8am and stated that they could deliver that day between 10am-3pm. I took off work to stay home for the delivery. They called back at 12:30 and stated that the TV was not put on the truck. I ended up traveling about 30 miles to their delivery site to pick the unit up myself as to not have to take another day off. I still gave the TV 5 stars despite the poor delivery service I encountered. NOTE: I kept the box just in case of any problems and will register the product with Samsung soon.
- This TV is beautiful. I was skeptical at first about the Auto Motion 120Hz system, but have yet to experience any problems. There is a "Demo" mode, which shows Auto Motion ON and Auto Motion OFF on two halves of the TV, allowing you to compare. The Auto Motion 120Hz had a slightly improved image on my up-converted DVD source, though it'll take a Blu-ray test to be sure.
The best part was when I hooked my computer up and output at 1920x1080. My desktop looked crisp and clean, and after playing Unreal Tournament I've decided that this TV will also be my new computer monitor.
Even standard definition DVDs (played in a Samsung up-converter) look beautiful. I watched an episode of House and nearly soiled myself. The contrast, brightness, and vivid colors (I've never seen such a blue sky) were breathtaking.
I recommend this TV for any gamer, A/V geek, or lover of high quality movies. It's definitely a steal at the price, as compared to the 8-series LCD panel Samsung put out recently (tip: don't buy TVs with the LED light source - you'll get seaming.)

5 comments about Samsung LN52A550 52-inch 1080p LCD HDTV.
- This television is truly one of the best purchases I have ever made. The picture is simply flawless with no dead pixels, high contrast, and absolutely even color over the entire picture. I can't find anything bad to say about the picture at all.
The menu system is easy to understand but a few functions take more button presses than they perhaps should. The feature to display pictures from a USB flash drive is simple to use and your pictures will look incredible when blown up on the screen. There were more connections than I needed but that's a good thing considering possible future needs.
The only caveat is that the sound is a bit disappointing. There is little low end puch to the sound. I use it with an AV receiver so that isn't an issue for me.
The outer edges are a shiny piano black and it looks great. The screen being matte (unlike the higher end Samsung models) really cuts down the glare and that was a big selling point for us as our viewing area is near our kitchen and our old CRT TV really had a lot of reflections that were annoying. No problem with the Samsung though. I've only played regular DVD's on it so far and they look reasonably good as long as you are a few feet away.
Normal (non-HD) programs look really good. This TV does a good job of conversion to whatever signal you give it. HD programs look incredibly sharp as you would expect.
Overall, I would recommend this TV to anyone and Amazon as the company to provide it. It's a great value even though there were a couple companies offering a (very slightly) lower price. Amazon did a great job for me with this purchase (I was wary of ordering a TV like this over the Internet). After the order, they emailed me that there may be a delay as they ran out of stock but it actually came on the first day of the original delivery window. The delivery company from Washington DC did a fine job and they even waited for me to open the box to make sure it wasn't damaged.
- I got the TV last week. CEVA Logistics used by Amazon to deliver the TV has horrible shipping service. On the scheduled day of delivery, the driver calls after 1/2 hr he missed the schedule time zone(after I call to the company n times to track my packages). And he says, by so and so time he has schedule dto leave from my house. I say, he is alreayd late and I had to pick up kids and be back .. he says either take it in next 5 min or he is leaving. He says I can re-schedule next week( and they work only Tue- Fri delivery). And driver calles me 5 times in 1 minutes and says I did not return his call knowing it is his call when I call him after 10 min. Driver/ shipping service is horrible and does not let open the box to screen if atleast TV screen is good/damaged. Driver he has to out of duty by 05:00pm. Ridiculous - he comes 2 hours late and pushes so much. Amazon, please select a decent delivery company like FedEx or UPS where people are not so harsh as CEVA logistics.
- We have had tv less than a week. I did a lot of research for my first HDTV purchase and I think this tv gives one of, if not the best combo of size, quality and value. The picture quality is superb and as most of the other posts say...the sound could be better. Although my next purchase will be a surround sound system...the sound tweaks mentioned in another post work wonders in the mean time. The sound is more than adequate.
We have HD cable from comcast, but my wife still does not like the way non-HD channels look on the tv (although its no fault of the tv itself). I tried the regular channels in a "stretch mode" to fit the 16:9 screen and do not like the look. I think regular channels look best in 4:3 480P (only negative is black on the left and right of screen). HD channels are perfect and xbox 360 looks fantastic as well.
I had no problems with delivery. Two people from CEVA came, opened the box, set up the tv and hooked up the cable. It came in perfect condition and arrived when it was set to arrive. You can track your package on Amazon and CEVA's website. They call you and set up an appointment, although I was given a six hour window.
I bought my tv through Amazon even though it was a few dollars more than the cheapest price. I did this because of the other sellers return policies on tv's over 37 inches. Since I was new to Amazon, this was something I could have easily missed. I may have been worried about nothing...but some of the return policies seem a bit less friendly...be sure to look into it before purchase.
Overall...very happy with Amazon and Samsung!
- I found this TV after I ordered Samsung LNT5265F which is one year older version of this TV. Definitely canceled even though I have to pay return shipping fee. ($56) That was the right decision. The picture quality is great as much as expected with 30,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and 5ms response time. CEVA did good job on delivery. They arrived on time scheduled. They opened the box to check if any damage on the product and put it on the right place. I set sound and picture fallowed by setting on the other review above. Seems working great. DVD up-scaling player working great with HDMI cable. My PS3 will be arrived tomorrow as the Blue-ray full HD disk player. Excited!! Highly recommended for the price and quality.
- I was going to purchase the LN-T5265F but was concerned about the glossy screen reflecting light so when I saw that the LN52A550 had the matte finish screen with the contrast ratio twice that of the 5265F, I realized I had found my TV. Amazon even delivered the set 5 days earlier than stated and the white glove delivery is wonderful. The picture on this set is outstanding! After adjusting the picture to my liking, I played a regular DVD movie through my Samsung DVD-1080P8 upconverting player and I was blown away at how great the picture was. I use my stereo to play the audio in Dolby Digital 5.1 and it really makes the whole viewing experience that much more exciting. This set is every bit as good, if not better than any Sony LCD TV and lower in price too. GET THIS TV!

5 comments about Samsung LN32A450 32-inch 720p LCD HDTV.
- All of the other reviews cover pretty much all of the other "pros" for this TV and I agree with them 100%. I wanted to mention its quality for gaming.
I knew before I bought a new tv that me and my roomate would be using it alot for gaming on the xbox 360. I tried a couple of others with an 8ms response time and they just weren't quick enough. When I decided I was going to need something with 6ms or better I assumed I would have to spend a great deal more. Then I found this tv.
We play a variety of different types of games and all of them look and flow great. From Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 to racing games, sports games, and even GTA IV that just came out. In my experience there has been no delay from the controller to the screen and I couldn't be happier.
Great deal. Buy it.
- After much research, settled on this LCD tv. I was not disappointed! Took it of the box and just attached my coax from my satellite service and voila the most beautiful picture appeared. The colors are spectacular and the sound clear and crisp. The black enclosure with the speakers at the bottom make for a good looking tv.
- Just purchased this HDTV 3 weeks ago and so far I have not been disappointed. Before this TV, I had a fifteen year old Toshiba and that was starting to go out. A few months ago, I started looking around for different Samsungs( I knew I wanted a Samsung because of their reputation for great HDTVs) Their were a few that I was looking at but wasn't thrilled with the prices. Finally, a couple months after my old TV started flickering, I started looking at HDTV sets again. I first found this set at Best Buy for 899. A couple days later I saw it at Circuit City for 799. After a few minutes of thinking, I ordered it online and picked it up. I have DirecTV(non HD, so far) and I also bought a DVD HD converter(also a Samsung). While the regular TV isn't perfect, it still looks really good. The DVD up converter is also really good. Very pleased with the TV and can't wait until I get more HD programming.
- Great image, easy to set up, well thought out inputs. Bought two. Amazon price excellent.
- You have to just love this tv. Hooked it up to the digital box and WOW what a picture. Glad I waited because it's a fabulous set.

- First of all, Amazon's white glove delivery service was great. I was a little hesitant about buying a TV of this size online but now that I've gone through the process I would do it again in a heart beat.
For those of you who have been following the news on the A650s, the reset issue has been fixed with the latest firmware. Chances are you will have to upgrade the firmware yourself when the TV arrives but it is pretty simple procedure using a USB thumb drive and Samsung provides step by step instructions with photos if you need them.
I've had my TV for about four days now and I'm still completely blown away by clarity, detail and colors this set produces. The LN40A650 has three HDMI inputs on the back, and one HDMI input on left side which made my devices incredibly easy to hook up. I then watched Ratatouille followed by Apocalypto, both on Blu-ray - great movies to show off your new set.
The 40" is the only model in the 6 series that has a fan built into the screen. Some people may be put off because of this but the good news is that this fan is completely inaudible. This weekend we had 90 degree Santa Ana winds here in California and even with out any air conditioning, I still couldn't hear the fan.
When I first saw the Touch of Color online I was indifferent. I don't really care for the color red but now that I have the set, it's slowly growing on me. All of the stock Samsung photos show a vibrant red but with my 40A650 in the living room it has the perfect amount of color. It's not strong enough to steal my focus away while watching TV but at the same time it looks great when the TV is shut off. I believe the rest of the colors have been announced so if red isn't your thing then it's just a matter of time.
The glossy piano black of the A650s does cause reflections at times but I don't consider it to be a deal breaker. It's easier to notice the reflections during the day but I still experimented with light placement so that lamp reflections were not visible at night. Most of the time I only notice the reflections when I'm actively looking for them and it has never interfered with my viewing experience but it's something to consider.
While you're not going to get any realistic surround sound out of the built in speakers, they do come with a little power if needed. I'll be upgrading to a 5.1 system pretty soon and the built in speakers are more than enough to hold me over. If you're not planning on using anything but the built in speakers then the 7 series television might interest you with it's built in subwoofer.
Be sure and take advantage of the 30 day price guarantee if you do buy your TV through Amazon. There are third party websites to help keep track of these things (price protector). I've already done this once so far and I can continue to do so for the first 30 days.
Overall I'm extremely pleased with the LN40A650 and my purchase experience through Amazon
- This is amasing piece of modern electronics.
All my family really enjoys it.
Amazon delivery was very good and even before time.
Everything would be the best if I have warranty for this TV.
Thanks Amazon!
- After months of researching all the different LCDs out there, this TV beats the hands down. At first I had ordered the 4071 from Amazon, then 2 days later after it was too late to cancel I saw this TV which has twice the contrast ration and half the responce time for only $50 dollars more than what I paid for the 4071. The CEVA shipping was excellent, the TV arrived a week sooner than estimated.
Pros: Excellent unbelievable picture that you have to see to believe. I watched 300 and Troy on Blu-ray through my PS3 and it was amazing. It's like looking out your window and watching an epic battle. The 120hz really brings out the full potential of the movies. The 120hz also is great for gaming. While playing Oblivion it definitly adds smoothness to the environment and the movement of characters. The differemce it completely night and day. The Touch of Color is pretty cool it's very subtle where it gives a nice accent without being too over powering. I was almost worried I wouldn't be able to see it, whenever I would go to Circuit City or Best Buy I could never see it. I have the TV placed in my bedroom with a cielling light and a window across from the TV and have experienced no ploblems with glare.
Cons: It's a dust magnet I'v had it less than I week and it's already getting a thin layer of dust on it. The remote is ok, they could've done w/o the rotating directional control.
Conclusion: If you are looking for a high quality tv at a reasonalbe price look no further than this. Believe me I've looked. Don't kop out and sell yourself short and just get any TV. Save and invest the extra money into getting a top of the line TV without a top of the line price. I guarantee you once you've seen this picture you won't be sorry.
- Pros: Perfect picture, 120 HZ is great. affordable
Cons: Body can be scratched with little effort, recent price drop by amazon looks suspicious.
After looking at a number of TVs for 3 months, i succeeded in narrowing down to a couple of models from Sony and Samsung. I compared this model with Sony XBR5 side by side, it was easy to see the difference in quality between the two. A650 showed black, blacker and white whiter, and the contrast was amazing. At $1800, (vs 2300 from fry's at that time) it seemed a great bargain to buy this tv from amazon.
The delivery was awesome, i got the TV 5 days in advance and in perfect condition. I would never again hesitate to buy such a priced item from amazon.
My old 720P Samsung went into the bedroom. I watched a few movies on my new TV both in standard and high definition and the difference from my old TV was remarkable. The 120Hz enabled smoother motion and i was amazed by the fast moving images. I did not have any problems with glare reflecting from the TV and i personally think that contrast is much better than a matte.
The only downside to it is that it can easily be scratched. I tried to clean a side with Bounty napkin, and it left a scratch on it. Luckily i was able to stop early.
I was also surprised by a sudden price decrease from amazon from 1800 to 1570 in 10 days. Luckily, i was able to get a refund. I am hoping that any sudden price drop happens before my 30 days are over.
All in All, if you are looking for the best picture on a 40 inch screen, this would be the perfect choice for movies, sports and video games.

- I have received this LCD 3 days ago and wanted to share my experience here. This is very nice and spectacular LCD available in the market. I have did a lot of research before buying this and compared with sony and sharp. I don't remember how many times I visited BestBuy to see the differnece between these 3 TVs. Finally I have voted for this TV and I am very happy with it now. I would recommend this TV. I don't want to talk about the Technical Stuff but this is worth spending this much money and Amazon's purchase was a breeze.I received this in 5 days after ordering.
- Shipper (CEVA) was superb...quick response, great communication and tv arrived a full 10 DAYS prior to quote from Amazon! CEVA even let me change shipping address mid-shipment w/o any issue or delay to shipment. They scheduled my appointment around MY availability and delivered on a Saturday. Total order went from purchase on Wednesday - to in my house and setup in my living room on Saturday. Professional delivery service and could not ask for more from them. Very accommodating.
TV is outstanding in both terms of external looks and actual display. When viewing a true 1080p image, makes HiDef look like Standard definitionin comparison. You can put your eye 1 inch from screen and not see any distortion. Amazing in terms of a 52" tv. Next level stuff.
- I purchased the Samsung LN52A650 1.5 months ago as soon as I saw that there was a firmware patch for the shut-off issue. We started experiencing the shut-off issue a couple of days after receiving the TV. I installed the patch and have not had the problem again since. (It's been 4 weeks since the patch.) The picture quality is fantastic. The local cable company HD service is 1080i and the picture is excellent. With Blu-ray discs the picture is stunning. We also use it for game play with a Playstation 3 and Wii. Works flawlessly and I have not seen a single hint of ghosting even with the fastest action games. I'm very pleased with the purchse, the Amazon price, and in-home delivery.
- I've had this tv for about a week now, it replaced a 1st generation Mitsu DLP. The picture quality is an order of magnitude greater, and I was already impressed by the 1080i on my wd-62525. The settings out of the box need to be adjusted; everything looks a little washed out/cartoony at first. However I found a great list of settings for close to reference quality picture. I've included them below my review if anyone else might want/need them.
Ceva's delivery service was excellent. They called me 2 days after I ordered the TV to schedule delivery, which was a week before Amazon showed the estimated delivery date. When it arrived, they took the TV out of the box, put it on my entertainment center, and patiently waited as I went through several screens to test the TV for any possible defects.
I will never buy electronics from a store again. And, as of right now, Amazon has a loyal customer for all my home theater needs. I would definitely recommend picking this TV up here if you're interested in buying it. On top of the great service, I couldn't get anyone to touch the price by close to $1000.
Enjoy!

- Searching for the right HDTV took some time for me, roughly 1 year in the process. I ultimately chose the best HDTV: Samsung's LN52A650.
2007 models, both Sony & Samsung didn't seem to work out all of the kinks in their products. 120Hz refresh was ok on 2007 models, but overpriced. I chose the Samsung over the Sony for numerous reasons, but two main reasons: Styling and Price.
Reason #1: Styling
As great as the Sony 52XBR4 was in reviews I just didn't like the glass bezel, just unattractive to look at. I particularly like the curve that Samungs have at the bottom of their TV's, distinctive and stylish, unlike a plain rectangular screen. The TOC is rather pleasant, not overwhelming, but just a hint of color.
Reason #2: Price
Despite being a fan of Sony...Sony consistently sells their products at a premium. Samsung models typically are priced cheaper with just as many options as Sony tv's and it's no wonder Samsung is beating Sony; just look at the bestselling HDTV's here at Amazon.com.

5 comments about Samsung LN46A650 46-inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV with RED Touch of Color.
- It's worth every penny. I can't think of one flaw on this set. Ordered from Amazon on Tuesday and got it on Friday delivered straight to my 3rd floor apartment. Worked from the start, no issues whatsoever.
Hooked up my cable set top box (component), Xbox 360 (component), and my old PC to it (pc video cable). Turned on the TV and my jaw dropped in awe. I replaced an old tube RCA 36" TV and I did ALOT of research before I bought this Samsung LN46A650. I wanted to make sure I had at least the same picture size in height as my old TV which it did, if not slightly more. I sit about 11 feet away from the TV and everything is crystal clear. The colors are vibrant, the blacks are black, the whites are white. I'm just amazed at how great the picture looks and this is at 1080i.
I got Time Warner Cable with the HD DVR cable box they supply and the HD channels look incredible. Most of my favorite channels are in HD and hopefully they'll continue adding more. I've been recording everything from HBO to Discovery channels and rewatching every movie and it's a whole new experience with this tv.
As for gaming with the xbox 360, I dusted off all my old games and enjoying it so much more in widescreen, clear, vibrant colors. Everything looks smooth. Graphics are amazing. Same goes with the PC. The only problem is that the video card on my old PC can't handle the 1080 so when I tried to play World of Warcraft on it, my fps was very low. You'll need the latest video card to run stuff in 1080 but browsing and even writing emails is just amazing to see on a 46" widescreen as I am doing right now.
As for the "red touch of color", I was concerned it would stand out too much but you can't notice it at all unless you're very close to the set. I think Samsung did a great job with adding a little flair to the set with the added red and it doesn't get in the way at all.
I just ordered a few HDMI cables (9 cents each). My only regret is that the XBox 360 doesn't have Blu-ray. Hopefully they will come to their senses and get one soon.
If you want the perfect TV, I would highly recommend the Samsung LN46A650 46-inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV with RED Touch of Color
- I did extensive research before I purchased and owned a Sony (Last Year's Model 64hz model) LCD TV that helped me to really understand what to look for when I contimplated my second LCD purchase. Sony makes a great set; but the picture of this Samsung even compared to the newer XBR model was not as bright.
What I think most people want is a bright clear picture. For the serious viewer this TV is VERY bright and clear (when a strong source signal is provided). What I learned from the research is that picture clarity can be measured in many different ways that is really too complex to explain perfectly. I liked many aspects of my Sony LCD, but the brightness of the Samsung LN46A650A trumps almost all other features including other aspects of picture quality.
Where this TV poses some issues is in the remote control, PIP and when a poor HD sourse is supplied. What is happening from time to time is that unclear HD Movies are being broadcast (on cable) which no TV would be able to decode without some problems. I think the critizism directed at this TV largely comes when a poor quality sourse signal is being broadcast.
On non HD programming this TV does a real good job of providing a clear, bright picture. Additionally, from a regular DVD (non HD), this TV does as good or better then most. The remote control has a funky rotary dial that takes a little getting used to; but it can be managed with some practice. The features are strong including a feature (INFO.L) which provides access to weather, stocks and news accross the bottom or top of the screen via a Ethernet jack. PIP dosn't allow me to access my computer and TV at the same time which I understand is a universal problem with all LCD TV's (not confirmed). With a contrast ratio of 50,000 to 1 I must turn down the brightness in many situations. From accross a large room the picture is stunning. I have read that brightness is the issue that most people judge a TV by. By this measure this TV is a 5 out of 5. My only regret at the moment is that I didn't purchase the 52" model. You will be very happy with this TV.

- I've now had my Samsung 650 for over a week, and it's a fantastic set. The picture is clear and vibrant, and there aren't any major issues I've run across. My set came with the 1003m firmware, so no random shutoff issues. Also no purple tint on my TV. Flashlighting is minimal, and while there is slight hazing in one place on my TV, it's all but invisible except when the entire scene is pitch black. No dead/stuck pixels either.
The remote is kind of wonky -- the wheel doesn't work very well, and it's often hard to select what you intend to. But it's no reason not to buy this TV. I've been viewing content via Comcast HD and playing games on my 360 both via HDMI. They both look great, and I haven't experienced any video lag. Sports look absolutely incredible on this TV. NHL and NBA games simply blow me away with their clarity. If you're a sports fan, you'll love this TV. If you're a gamer, you'll love this TV. If you're a movie watcher or just a casual viewer, you'll love this TV. If you're a living, breathing human, you'll love this TV.
- I FINALLY STEPPED FOOT INTO THE 21ST CENTURY WITH THE BEST 46" LCD TV FOR UNDER $2000. THIS TV ROCKS !!!!!
- Before I bought this TV, I read the reviews and honestly was concerned about the shut off problem that some folks reported even though everyone was impressed with the picture quality. Well it have been about a month so far and no problems yet and WOW, what a picture quality. Very happy I made the choice.

5 comments about Samsung LN40A550 40-inch 1080p LCD HDTV.
- After much research, I decided on this TV. I ordered from Amazon on 4/30 with an est delivery date of 5/9 and, CEVA delivered it on 5/7 (free white glove service). The TV has a fantastic picture, TV's setup/config is very intuitive, and the sound is surprisingly good for a 10wx2 TV speaker system. There are plenty of connections, too. Currently the devices I've connected to the TV are a cable HD/DVR via HDMI, a progressive scan DVD player via component video, and a ReplayTV 5040 DVR via component video. I've routed the TV sound out to my Denon amp, even though it's standard stereo. My only real criticism, and a minor one at that, is the size of the remote which initially seems *huge*! I'm quickly getting used to it though, as the layout is quite intuitive. The remote is also backlit, a real plus when watching in a dark room!
When researching HDTVs, I also considered the 650 and 750 series and compared all to Sony LCDs, but I found the picture on the Samsungs to be *much* better. Although I would have liked an ethernet connection (on the 750 series), I really didn't want the high-gloss planels on the 650 and 750 series. (My viewing room is quite bright during the day, and although the glossy LCDs do seem to have an improved picture quality, the added glare turns that into a big negative for me.) Initially I intended to go for a 120Hz set, but as I did more research, I decided that was a feature I could forgo. The HD picture from the cable box is phenomenal. I notice no ghosting, graininess or pixelation. Even standard def (stretched) is fine to watch. I expect HDMI-CEC will be a very handy feature as I upgrade components down the road, but for now, I'm unable to make use of it.
In sum, I'm very, very pleased with this TV, with CEVA's white glove delivery service, the price I paid, and the 12-month no interest deal I got using Amazon's credit card. I would definitely buy this TV again and have already recommended it to friends who are currently HDTV shopping.
- I was very apprehensive buying a LCD TV on the internet. I was bothered about dead pixels (though I hear these are no longer the kind of problem these used to be), getting an inferior quality/scratched unit etc. etc. And man I am glad the way it all turned out. The shipping may be a slight problem - these freight companies just like the movers are so hard to tame!!!
Features/results I liked:
1. Color/contrast are outstanding (yes it beats my friend's much more expensive Sony 'x' series)
2. Back light can be made very bright indeed and the contrast holds up to these high levels just so well
3. Menus are iconic and rich text based and quite intuitive
Features I didn't:
1. I find myself fumbling a lot trying to switch between the sources. I wish this was more intelligent. Why can't this TV just identify the active sources and just play them all one by one and let me choose?
2. Why can't I switch on the TV on with a source preselected? If my home theater can switch on on the Aux mode, why can't this TV be switched on on HDMI1?
3. There are interdependencies between menu items. If one part of the menu is selected one way, certain other parts would appear disabled! This is outrageous (Strangely this applies to DNIe, one of Samsung's hotly advertised features)
4. If I use component cable, the non HD channels actually look better than when I use the HDMI cable. Where are all the up-conversion algorithms?
5. The speakers are OK but by listening to them, I always get the feeling that these manufacturers force you to buy home theaters!
My overall view. Great buy looking at the competition it has!
- There's not much detail I can add to what's already been written, so I'll just add one more '5 star' review, and a few brief/random thoughts.
Like several other reviewers here, I did quite a bit of big-box store shopping before ordering this unit. I'm pretty particular about my electronics, so I feel I made the best choice with this model. Sony has some catching up to do now. ;-)
After watching BBC's Planet Earth Series on a standard def TV, and then finally getting to experience it on this TV, I finally understand all the praise over HD. In a word, S-T-U-N-N-I-N-G.
The built in speakers are terrible; very anemic and tinny. In this day and age, most folks are setting up with audio equipment, so, I guess the built-in speakers are for the most part, going to be overlooked.
Another complaint to lodge, but not the fault of the TV: standard def cable picture is awful; blurry and over saturated. Some channels look fine, most are less-than-pleasing. I'm starting to get accustomed to it, but overall, YUK.
FYI: You can bypass your SD cable box to get over-the-air HD channels (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, etc)--just connect the cable directly to the TV. I get about 8 HD channels on Comcast. I also get pay-per-views and on-demand people are watching in my neighborhood on the upper channels. BONUS!
- You can't beat this for the price. I was pricing out older models at the box stores (only 15,000:1 contrast and 8 MS refresh rate) and even those were still more expensive. The order went well and the delivery was faster than Amazon predicted.
The picture on the TV is amazing, although you can notice shadows on fast movement if you are viewing the tv from the side. Other than that, the tv is wonderful!!!!
- I've had the Samsung LN40A550 for 2 weeks now and absolutely love this TV.
Delivery was hassle free and quicker than Amazon predicted.
I'm using an HDMI connection between my Comcast cable box/DVR and the TV and the picture quality is spectacular! The sound quality is perfectly acceptable as well. Although I have the TV connected to a home theater sound system, I only run that when watching a movie or sporting event. I see no need to have it on for regular TV programming, since the sound from this TV is very good.
I agree with the accolades others have given to the Samsung LN40A550; it is truly exceptional. Thanks Amazon for an great deal on an excellent HDTV!

- I am not a video buff. But it was time for me to buy a new TV. I have been looking for about 3months - staring at the TV's in the stores and reading reviews online. I boiled it down to Samsung 4665/4661 in terms of picture quality/price. But I personally hated the glossy trim on 4665..too wide for my taste. Then one day, me & my wife saw the 46A550 in BestBuy..pic quality was awesome and trim was just perfect. I checked a few things online and decided to go for it. Was way of ordering it online but after reading about other's experience of purchasing from Amazon, i placed my order. TV arrived quicker than expected and guys who delivered placed it where I wanted and waited until I tried a DVD. Its been a month now and i am delighted.
What I like:
- good/bright picture quality (maybe its 30000:1 contract ratio or something else)
- simple easy to navigate menu. decent manual & remote.
- to my delight, even just a regular DVD picture looks awesome. I tried blu-ray. Its definitely better than DVD picture but not better enough to force me to make a purchase. considering that huge number of regular DVD media around, this is great.
- i love the wiselink feature which allows me to copy pics to usb drive and display them as slide show on TV with background music. a great background for party's. I can finally see the value of my 8M digital camera..5x7 prints dont do justice to 8M camera's
What I didnt like:
- no many things but audio could be better.
- i am still trying to get my hands around the 4:3 vs 16:9 aspect ration. Somehow, I don't always like 16:9 format. But this TV has a feature to zoom vertical portion slightly (zoom1) and seem's more to my liking.
Here are couple of related items:
- i bought my cables at monoprice.com. good price/quality.
- amazon's 30day price match is great. when TV dropped $75 in a week, they made prompt adjustment. You have to call when price is active though !
In summary, I strongly recommend this TV and also ordering it from amazon !!
- This is a great TV. I used settings from AVS Forum both for video and audio and I'm really impressed. I like that the screen is not reflective and the image quality is outstanding (at least to my eyes :) ). I also have no complaints about sound quality with internal speakers.
- I have one word for it "Awesome". After doing months of research I pulled the trigger and I am satisfied with it in every respect (including the price). The TV was delievered 6 days ahead of time! This effectively meant I was watching SD for 6 days and the PQ was not all too great.
On the 7th day I had HD, and ever since characters were popping out of the TV into my living room. Yesterday 'Anderson Cooper' was literally in front of me! It is amazing. For those who are fence sitters I'd say go ahead and take the plunge you'll never go wrong with this one!
- I was thinking of getting the LNT71 series but then they came out with this 550 series. The contrast is amazing. I watch it during the daytime in a very bright room and even the darkest scenes are bright.
The viewing anlgles are great no dimming effect. I did not want the anti-judder feature so I was happy they did not have it on this model. I have heard so many mixed reviews about that feature. It came on the stand and the "white glove" delivery service was great. I think the price for this 46" LCD was great. Once it dropped below $1600 I placed my order. I read reviews of the new LCD TVs for almost a year. Most put Samsung on the top of the list. I am happy I did that research as now I have one of the best TVs on the market.
- Amazon delivered this in five days after ordering. They set up the TV and made sure it worked. Free shipping and no sales tax. I found this TV to be the best product for the price. I checked into Sony, Toshiba, Sharp, JVC. They all have good products but do not compare to Samsungs features or price. You cannot buy another brand LCD TV with 30,000 to 1 contrast ratio, at 5ms response time, 1080p resolution, 3HDMI ports, at the price Amazons is asking. What you get are less features, and you can see the difference in the picture quality. They give you 30 days if the price goes down they take it off your credit card. I saved another $ 150. The picture is so clear and crisp it is like looking at real life colors. The sound is good but it sounds better with a few more speakers. If I needed another TV I would buy this same one agan. The size fits anyware either on the wall or a stand.
