  1. We love this product. It fit's our laptop perfectly; nice and snug. The colors are great and the folding out feature of the handles is very "handy". Definitely recommend it.

  1. I'll get to the point: this thing is pretty much crap.

When you first plug it in, the display reads "connecting..." for about 10 seconds while your ipod goes haywire, randomly flipping between different menus, the 'now playing' screen, and the "OK to disconnect" screen. The manual say this is 'normal', but it strikes me as very much not right. I've never seen other remotes do this.

After it finally connects and your ipod has finished spazzing out, it will jump to and start playing the first song alphabetically by artist. Make sure you *really* like this song because you'll be hearing it a LOT. Every time you finish the last song on a playlist, it jumps back to this song. Every time you finish playing your 'all songs' pseudo-playlist, it jumps back to this song, etc. And this is all assuming it doesn't lock up, which it does frequently. You're constantly having to yank/reconnect the thing, and every time guess what song it starts playing. Contrary to what the manual says, this remote is not compatible with ipod nanos: I tried it on a 1st and 2nd gen, and on both the remote repeatedly locks up at the end of a playlist, and you have to yank it and plug it back in again to get it to respond to any buttons (and go through the 10 second spazz-fest again). Even when it's not connected to a nano, it will randomly lock up when changing tracks or whatever.

Lots of other things about it aren't quite right either- the virtual volume slider doesn't line up with the one on the ipod, adjusting the volume on the ipod directly causes the slider to get out of sync and things get all messed up. Also, the secondary line that's supposed to list the artist/album info randomly doesn't work sometimes- on some tracks it lists what it's supposed to, on others you get "ggggggggggggggg?U??%" or some other garbage made out of a combination of those same four characters. There appears to be no rhyme or reason as to which tracks it likes and which it doesn't, on my 2nd gen nano it does this to about a 10th of the tracks, on my large ipod it does it to about a 3rd.

On top of all that, it doesn't win any points for being readable at a distance: the "charcoal-black on blue" color scheme makes reading anything other than the main line very difficult at arms length or further. There's a contrast option in the setup menu, but I'm not sure what it does since I see no visible difference between its three settings.

All in all there's very little positive I can say about this device. Of the three ipods I've tested it with it's totally unusable on two of them and highly annoying on the other. About the only good thing I can come up with is that the cable between the dock connector and the display unit is a respectable 16 inches long, making it easy to stash your ipod in a backpack or long coat, although why you'd want to do this is questionable since you'd need to take the ipod out and yank/reconnect the cable three or four times an hour to get it working again when it dies.

If you just want a remote to control your ipod in your pocket, I'd recommend getting the apple FM tuner gizmo. It may be more expensive and not have the backlit display, but it's tons more reliable.
