5 comments about URC R5 Universal Pre-Programmed & Learning Remote.
- We have a Samsung LCD, Motorola digital cable box and Onkyo receiver and none of the included component remotes worked for all 3. I picked up a Phillips PMDVR8 remote and traded it in for this one the next day. The R5 is simple and intuitive. After I spent 20 minutes programming, everyone in the household was able to pick it up and use it with no learning curve. The cable box transfer was clean, the TV and receiver needed some learning. The punch-through feature is great, and it can learn commands from any remote while in any component setting. While in "cable", the audio buttons control the receiver and the input button controls the TV. No need to ever switch from the "cable" setting during normal use. I highly reccomend this remote if you're looking for a simple solution. Read all the reviews here - there are some limitations which other people found, but none apply to us.
- I first thought this remote would be great when I picked it up...it came recommended by an electronics salesperson I'd trusted before. The "Macro Power" that turned every system on or off at once seemed quite handy. The DVD instructions that come with it seemed quite helpful, and both it and the book were very easy to understand. I followed them to the letter and it worked perfectly to program my cable box. No sweat!
I then started trying to progam the other components...as I had with the cable box, I pressed the buttons, entered the code, component turned itself off, then all the buttons should work afterward. Well, it did work perfectly for everything...for the 20 whole seconds it stayed in programming mode. The second the programming light turned off, NOTHING. The TV did not respond, nor did my DVD recorder, VCR or home theater system. I tried all three methods of pre-programmed code, code search, and manual learning functions again and again for my other components. Everything always worked great, until that 20 second light blinked off after the program codes were entered, then it was like all the stuff I'd just done had never been entered at all. But it still somehow worked without fail with the cable box. But I needed it to work for more than just the cable box!! I finally had to return the thing after several frustrating programming attempts.
- Easy to program and works as advertised. Far better than any remote I've ever had, including one that cost $200. The learning method for programming is highly usefull - I had to use it for most of my components. Every key on the unit can be individually programed via the learning mode, including the mode selection keys. You can intermix signals from different remotes during programing, eg, can program the volume key to work the TV volume in the DVD or VCR control mode. And any key can be programed for any function, eg, I programmed the +10 button to provide the (-) neeed for digital TV channels, and the "Previous Channel" button to serve as DVD/VCR Eject. For some reason I had some problem getting the key board to program in the VCR and DVD mode. Had to resort to programming only one or 2 number keys at a time, then exiting the learing mode, then re-entering the mode and teaching a couple of more key, etc, until all keys were programmed. And had to repeat for one or 2 numbers to get all to work. But I consider this a minor problem. Highly recommened.
- Can not be programed to control Dish network receiver.
I would not have purchased the useless so called "universal remote", if I knew it would not control Dish receiver.
- I've had two Universal Remotes go bad in the same way just weeks apart. I returned the first unit to the manufacturer and was told a replacement was shipping to me. It's been 2 months, I have not received a replacement, and the company will not return my emails, letters, or phone calls. Although the manuals are well written and programming was a breeze, I'd recommend buying another brand that you can count on. Universal Remote Control is a terrible company.

2 comments about Jensen JDSC-IR100A Wireless IR Remote Control Extender.
- Most of this product works as it should: the transmitter and receiver do allow you to greatly extend the range of your remote and allow you to broadcast the control signal through solid objects. The problem is the range that the *transmitter* has from your remote, which is about four feet. In other words, you can't use your remote more than four feet from the transmitter because it won't pick up the signal: I suppose you could place it on your coffee table or ottoman, but it needs to be plugged in and it would kind of defeat the purpose of having such a piece of equipment. Don't waste your money unless you can be very, very close to the transmitter when using your remote.
- The IR receiver unit (the one you point your remote at) only has a 5 ft or so range, so you have to place it right by the remote you are holding. I bought one of these at best buy, exchaged it, and the other one did the same thing. Poor design. look elsewhere.

1 comments about Roadwired RAPS! Advanced Protection System Wrap, Medium - Gray.
- I have used the medium and the large size wraps for several years now when going on trips and must say that this is one of the best products I have ever seen. While I love cases to protect my valuable electronics such as MP3 player, PDA, digital camera etc. they have the downside of not always fitting well.
The wrap to the rescue! Whatever product I want to carry & protect, there is a wrap that works. One simply puts the product in the center of the unfolded wrap, and then folds over the corners envelope-style (see my uploaded images). Each corner has velcro that attaches securely to the outside of the wrap. That's it. It works like a padded blanket with added features such as protection from the elements.
So - instead of buying a custom case for everything I own, I use wraps to carry my stuff securely. Cannot recommend this product highly enough!
