  1. it controls everything. it is very easy to program. it, though, takes a while to get used to especially if you have digital cable. the up, down, left, right, and OK buttons are below the number buttons instead of on top.

  2. I've never liked universal remotes. It seems like they can never power everything up or down properly on a system with multiple components, or that you lose functions from the original remotes. So when I got one for my birthday I was extremely skeptical. However, the next day I programmed the remote (a surprisingly quick process!), and it can now do EVERYTHING my other remotes did. It truly learns what you want it to. You can program individual buttons to a specific funstion very easily. I have a TV, VCR, DVD, Stereo, and Tivo all running off of this remote, and now I want another for the other system in my house.

I'd highly recommend this remote to anyone who currently uses multiple remote controls!!

  3. I found this remote in a Walgreens store. It has unbelievable functionality for a cheap remote. I was able to program my TV, VCR, DVD, Hughes TiVo/DirecTV receiver, and audio receiver and customize the functionality of each unit on this remote.

The only con I've found is that the response time is a bit slow. This is only noticable for things like TiVo menus when one must scroll through lists, for example.

I'm going to buy a second remote for my upstairs TV & VCR!

  4. It is much more aesthetic and handy than the product-specific remote it replaced

  1. We bought this for one set of grandparents one Christmas and it was such a hit that we bought it for the other set of grandparents the following year. We recently bought it for ourselves after spending countless hours hunting for the remote that our 9 year old keeps putting down in the oddest of places. Its easy enough for the kids to use. The only complaint I have is that the battery compartment seems to come loose but that may be the kids jumping on it (and a little tape will do the trick).

Big numbers that light up...no need for glasses..and as I said, you can't lose this baby in the couch.

  1. This is an excellent remote and they have a ton of codes. And it will learn a bunch of items. They also allow you to send it in to add a new code that they may have that is not in the list. Hence the reason for 4 out of 5 stars. The URC-8910 allows you to download the code over the phone...but this model you have to mail to them to add. But still the One For All's that are learning are the best in the business... I tried Harmony / Universal Remote brand and a few others...but One For All is a great company for support...I highly recommend.

  2. This is what I have been looking for! My TV and DishNetwork sat receiver BOTH came with crappy remotes. The TV remote needs to be less than a foot from the TV to work. This does all of the sat receiver functions and the commonly used ones for the brand "Z" TV. One word of caution: the instructions for "learning" the old remote aren't clear. When you press the button to be programmed on the One for All remote, the LED lights for 5 seconds. The instructions don't warn you that the button on the old remote must be pressed DURING that 5 seconds.
Ergonomics are excellent. Although the buttons are small and appear to be close together, my arthritic hands have no problem with hitting the wrong buttons as they did with the Dish remote.
Part 2: I just added a Panasonic DVD recorder, again with a poor remote that doesn't work well. This One-For-All saved the day again! Positively BRILLIANT engineering! Something that is lacking in most of today's electronics.

  3. I have a Samsung LCD tv, Sony home theater, Dish network and a sony dvd player.
Expect for the home theater remotes works excellent for the other three things. For home thetare - if we are not playing DVD then we use the DVD option on remote and then we get the desired functionallity.
Cheap remote and works fine. Recommended

  4. I have this for over a year now and even it is falling a lot - we have three kids in the house - it is still working a 100% It is also easy to program. I have 2 audio amplifiers that are not listed with a code, but both are working fine with remote to remote command transfer.

  5. The CON's:
I bought this remote after returning a URC-8910 from the same company and several unsuccessful attempts to get the 8910 to work with my JVC combo DVD+/-RW VCR unit. My hope was that this URC-6820 was a more modern remote and might natively support devices the 8910 did not. I was wrong. I haven't gotten to it yet, but it looks like I will have to "learn" all the functions of my JVC remote to the URC-6820.

    The PRO's:
Packed with features for the price. The unified power on/off is an especially nice feature. Some more excellent features:
    - More buttons can be retasked than the 8910.
    - Much larger memory cache for learned buttons and macros.
    - Runs on 2 rather than 4 batteries and holds custom settings properly when replacing batteries.
    - Nice "heft" and balance in the hand. Controls well placed.
    - JP1.2 interface for PC programming (haven't tried this yet but it looks like some serious geek fun).

5 comments about Philips Prestigo SRU8015 Universal Remote Control.
  1. Coming from a Logitech Harmony 1000 (whose touchscreen eventually drove us nuts), I had high hopes that the SRU8015 would be a more straightforward but worthy replacement. In some ways it is, in others, it is not. Granted, it's considerably cheaper than the Harmony, but it's frustrating that it comes so very close to being excellent, and yet falls so far short.

Firstly, unlike the brochure and Philips' website indicates, the backlight on the unit I received doesn't turn itself on by picking it up. Actually, I've seen it turn the light on 3 or 4 times, but with no rhyme or reason. Very annoying.

Setting the remote up is pretty simple, but you are only allowed to choose from lists of manufacturers, not specific models. My Scientific Atlanta PVR cable box works with the remote, but the red/blue/yellow buttons were mapped incorrectly and had to be manually edited. And with most of my devices, there are several buttons not listed in the "More" category. If you have specific commands on your original remote that don't appear in the 8015's extended menus, you must add them manually. Had they allowed for specific model choices, the database would be bigger, so they obviously dumbed down the choices to save memory space.

If all you want to do is change channels and power things on/off, this remote will probably suffice, but if you regularly need to do things like change inputs, toggle aspect ratios, etc., you might find yourself spending considerable time holding your old remote up to the 8015 to learn IR codes, then naming them manually. Then be prepared to spend lots of time using the scroll wheel, as newly created commands are always put at the very bottom of the list, with no way to re-order them.

You can create activities (Watch TV, etc), and you can add delays to the signals for turning on multiple devices. Unfortunately though, you can't edit an activity once you create it. Didn't set the TV input delay long enough? You have to delete the entire Watch TV activity and create it again. Like manually added commands, you also can't manually re-order the activities...all newly created activities move to the bottom of the list by default.

Another annoyance is the dedicated check-mark button. This replaces "OK" for many commands that would normally be activated by an OK button. In fact, Philips' next model down the ladder, the SRU-9600 (partially touch screen based, and even more lacking in customization) doesn't have the check mark button. You instinctually want to hit the OK button when you make a choice, but if you try to use it, you are constantly shown a photo of the check mark button and told to use that instead. Why this remote needs a check mark button AND an OK button is beyond me. GRRR!

Finally there are problems with powering things on and off. I suppose this is inherent in simplistic universal remotes. You can turn your entire system off with one "All Off" activity, but you have to manually add each device and tell the 8015 what command (power off) to send. Seems to me that it shouldn't be too hard for the 8015 to know what the default power commands are. That aside, if you do set up a power off activity and one of your devices is already off, the 8015 will turn it back on. This is the difference between higher end remotes like the Harmony 1000. The 8015, even if it has been issued an activity command, doesn't know what devices are on or off. I've set up 3 separate power off activities...TV Off, DVD Off, and All Off. Kinda dumb.

On the bright side, the Favorites are nice, the remote feels solid, and the IR signal seems strong.

  2. I just received the brand new PRESTIGO 8015/37 remote on January 31, and it is an all around beautiful to look at remote. I have 4 devices programmed, and it performs all functions available on the originals. I had researched the Logitech Harmony remotes (680), and I do like their computer USB method of programming and updating over the Philips set up wizard. Some owners of Harmony have reported that the software is slow and lethargic.

    As for the Prestigo 8015/37.....

    Pros:

    1. It is designer beautful, with all keys fully backlit, and a unique 2" colour LCD screen which accepts the network icons and functions. One touch TV selection
    2. Programming is intuitive but imperfect using the setup wizard.
    3. Once fully programmed, all keys on the 4 devices I have set up so far work well. This takes some patience and perseverence.
    4. A nice shape, preferred over the curvy Harmony 680 and higher.

    Cons:

    1. Database is limited, with new devices requiring manual programming.
    2. The . key for sub-channels for the 7432 required a manual key fix, wasting several hours in the initial set up procedures. Frustrating.
    3. 3 of 4 devices (new) required manual programming. Even Philips items.
    4. Documentation could be improved.

All in all, a very nice fully functional remote. A real cool factor, making it a gee whiz component. Prices range from $[...] (Amazon, Buy.com) to $[...] elsewhere. I have the Philips 7432 HDTV, Philips Blu Ray Player, Philips DVDR HDD, and the Toshiba HDDVD fully programmed. It accepts 15 devices, and has 400 built in colour icons. 1500 brand devices in database.

Now that I have been using the remote for over a week, I am very satisfied with my purchase. The coolness of the remote includes the piano black with silver finish which matches most of today's HDTVs, the really nice LCD screen with colored icons for all networks and most cable/satellite channels, and the fully backlit buttons. The manual programming is a bit tedious, but works well after you get the hang of it; you only have to do it once, and you can change functions on a key later on.

This new remote, which just came out in December, won an Innovations Award at the recent 2008 CES (Consumers Electronic Show) in Las Vegas.

I am glad that I went with the 8015/37 over the more popular Logitech Harmony.

  3. I bought this remote control, and I am very disapointed. When I try to work with it The screan fades and gets blank.I am a busy working guy I do not have time to deal with returning process. Therefore I sucrifice my money and left with a defected remote control
    Yosief Habteselassie

  4. When I first got this, I was really impressed. After returning one, I discovered that the first my not have been defective but had more glitches then the replacement. The unit reboots often, forgets keys, and the backlight does not stay lit when you change settings. From what I can see, there is no way to update the firmware on this unit. The ring around the arrow keys gets in the way when you use the arrow key. This then changes the device from the one you think you are adjusting, to an other device you do not want to be on. Response time is slow on certain devices I put in. You can not create custom activities that are not already in the built in menu. I chose this because I did not want to program a remote over the internet like logitech. But there may be an advantage to doing this. I'll wait till this goes dead and give the logitech a chance.

  5. I have been using the Philips SRU8015 remote for a couple of months now. This is by far the best remote I have seen in the market!

The remote was a gift from my brother, who has been trying to convince me to replace the 7~8 remotes in our house by JUST ONE. I have seen lots of Logitech remote in the stores, but the PC set-up simply turned me off: why do I have to turn on my computer in order to watch a TV? And, as a "technology late adopter", I am not crazy about computer staff in general!

The beauty of the Philips remote is that you don't need a PC at all! Just sit infront of your TV, follow the instruction on the color screen on the remote, and the set up only take a couple of minutes! That is how a remote should work!

Despite many advanced funcitons (some are even unexpected, but really cool!), the remote are really easy to use. The set up is straight forward, the instruction on the screen are quite logical. It seems that the people who made the product have really thought it all through!

I also like the look and feel of the product: high quality color screen; cool rotary wheel that allows you to scrow down list of channels quickly, it also gives nice feelings in hand.

For improvement: the packaging was really difficult to open! Can you make it a bit more friendly experience for such a beautiful product?

  1. ...Just got my 2nd one from RiteAid around the corner for less than 8bucks! The 1st one a guest who loved at 1st sight while visiting us is using at their place, and very happy w/ it! I have a regular RCA stereo TV and both times I got it programmed in less than 60sec...

Don't pass it being fooled w/ bad reviews: believe me this is a 1X 2.5in. neat product, maybe less than 1oz, w/ 2025 cell battery.

You can keep it on your pocket (mine is on a cotton string, not a key-ring) while at home and change channels (only up or down), mute sound, whatever, whenever the phone rings, your spouse or kids talk to you, or it's time to change clothes!

  2. I bought mine for 10 bucks at Rite Aid drug store yesterday. I have only used it for the TV(not cable etc...) and it has worked fine so far. I set it on the window sill next to my bed where the original remote will not set because it is to big. I may velcro a strip to the wall and remote for even more "ease of use".

I also plan to use it mischieviously at some point.

The cashier at Rite Aid said they sold out at Christmas and restocked only after "months" and they display them at the check-out area because they are so popular.

  3. This well designed litte keychain remote works very well. I also brought a similar priced remote with "The Shtummer" written on the box that didn't have nearly the same quality and didn't work as well. Both you can spend a few minutes initially programming as you cycle trough all the possible combinations of brands and TV's etc.

The TV and CAB/SAT buttons light up when pressed and in programming mode.

Comes with a small paper sheet with programming instructions. You'll need to keep that carefully in order to remember how to program the thing in the future, although the more tech savy would eventually figure it out.

  4. The R2-MINI is a great universal remote that includes only the necessities--channel control, volume control, on/off for both cable boxes and tv's (though I was confused about the cable box button, I didn't realize that since most tv's nowadays are cable-ready, meaning that the cable plugs straight into the tv, all one needed to do for cable-ready tv's was program the tv button and all the functions would work) and the almighty mute button. It is great for travels and hotels(don't you hate it when they don't give you a remote!)and works with just about any tv. The instructions are a little confusing, but it is very simple to program once you get the hang of it. However, I use it for pranking people--since it is so small, it easy to hide your friends will never guess that it is you who keeps turning off the volume or changing the channel during their favorite show. This is best in sports bars. In the case a game-winning play is about to be made, simply change the channel. The crowd around you will erupt into a chaos of mad drinkers. Overall, however, I was very pleased with this product and would reccomend it to anybody looking for a simple universal remote that is easy to program and easy to carry.

  5. The R2 MiNi is a very fun and entertaining toy to play with, use as a cheap replacement remote, and to prank your friends or strangers. When I first tried the R2 MiNi I followed the instructions word for word on 5 different televisions and it did not work. I realized after reviewing the instructions again, that in step 3 where it says "Point the remote towards the device and press CH+ or CH- with single button presses" that you need to press/hold the channel button until the television shuts off, then press TV or CBL/SAT. The reason for this is when you press CH+ or CH-, it is not some kind of code, but a way to scan for the particular type of IR Code that your television has. I hope my explanation was clear enough to understand. Enjoy your R2 MiNi Remote Controls.

  1. Progamming up is very easy , buttons are laid out very well. This "is" the last remote you'll ever need. I have another previous model and could not be happier. The light is a good idea when your watching your favorite shows at night , but this model has a "red" light back ground illumination which is very hard to see. The other model had a normal "greenish white" back ground which worked well. I'm not sure why they chnaged it , they should go back to it. I would have rated it 5 stars otherwise due to hard to see lighting..

  2. Probably OK but would not fully learn the volume control function for an Olevia TV. Instructions lacking for use of the DVR controls.

  3. I have used various brands of universal remotes over the past 12 years, and I think this one is the best. I have never yet been able to get one remote to control all my components satisfactorily until now.

I just bought a new Sharp Aquos TV, Panasonic Blu-Ray, and Onkyo 100 watt receiver. Plus I have an AT&T Uverse Motorola box. Since some of these items are brand new, no remote codes would work (although the Onkyo remote came close).

This remote did not have the preprogrammed codes either...BUT...you can program this remote to do everything your other remotes do. It took an hour or so, but now it works ALL COMPONENTS! Woo hoo! I especially like the fact that it has specific Receiver buttons (like DTS, THX, DD) that MOST universal remotes do NOT have. So when I want to switch to THX sound, I just press Shift+THX on my remote and it switches...just like my receiver's remote would.

Plus, this remote's macro capability is endless...and it includes a Pause control so that you can make the macro pause for several seconds (while a component is turning on, for instance) before moving to the next step. This is VERY handy for slow starting components like Blu-Ray players and high-end Receivers.

The buttons are VERY well placed, and the light button on the side is ingenious.

It will take some time to get this set the way you want...but it is well-worth it!

  1. This vendor does a great job of swift delivery. This remote is easy to set up and works well BUT I would advise against it for a Sharp TV. After using it awhile it would wipe out the preset channels from 20 through 80. I have no clue as to how it would do this. I would have to go through the channel setup again. A few hours/days later it would do it again. I stopped using this channel change and the problem went away, Go figure. This vendor does a great job of swift delivery.

  2. The advertising on the packaging says it works with all brands! NOT! It didn't work with my DVD player. When I contacted the company for the correct code to make it work, they said it didn't have a code for my unit! So this piece of junk was worthless. Not as advertised - don't buy One For All products!

  1. It's my first universal remote, so I can't compare it to others. I wanted a basic remote that could control my cable box, dvd player and TV from bed - most importantly control the volume and power off the tv. This remote does that and more. It also works from a good distance - I've tested it from approx. 20ft and it's able to transmit. The manual is easy to read/ program. My electronics are popular brand name. I had my TV powering on/off, volume control, dvd player and cable box programmed in about 5 min. Programming the "master power" on/off sequence and "volume lock" was also a breeze. I haven't tried programming fav channels or sleep timer yet, but it's looks pretty simple to do.
It's slim and long, with a the lower half being slightly thicker - I would have preferred it to be a little shorter/smaller. The construction feels durable, and the buttons are rubber and easy to read find, although there is no back lit.
It's an uncomplicated, basic universal remote, that works great.

If this review helped you please vote for it...

  2. It controls my TV and my DirecTV, but not my DVD player/VCR combo player. The manual lists codes for 11 DVD/VCR brands, but not mine. It doesn't make sense that they would leave Phillips off the list.

  3. I purchased this remote to control my TV, DVD player, and DirectTV box. We needed this because we lost our original TV remote and couldn't use the sleep timer. It controls the TV as it should. However, I could not get it to sync with my DirectTV box despite trying ALL the codes included with the instructions. Also, it did sync with the DVD player, but doesn't control most of the functions. Be weary if you need this remote to control all features!

  4. If you're looking for an inexpensive remote control, you've found it. This is a simple device that is easy to operate. No complaints whatsoever!

  1. This item is a must if you have the Creative Labs speaker system(s) that are compatable w/ it. If you are listening to music off of your computer, & you want to be away from it for a while, this is the answer if you get tired of getting in & out of the chair when you need to turn the volume up or down, or turn the speaker system off if you don't want to hear the sounds of the computer. Be able to turn your subwoofer higher or lower w/ the touch of a button. Great! remote control for computers.

  2. Excellent product for use with Creative Speaker system, replaced my corded controller which had a thumb wheel control that was failing.
