  1. We tested this unit on a stucco wall for starters and the picture was unbelievable. Can't wait to see it on a high contrast screen !! The motor is super quiet. I am not one to always go with name brands, but I have never been dissappointed with a SOny product yet.

  2. It's quiet, the picture is great, the shipping was prompt. I've been shopping around, this unit was a good deal.

  3. This is a fantastic projector - one of the best investments I've made in a long time. The best thing about it is the image shift. From wherever you have the projector set up, you can shift the image 1/2 the image's width left or right, and a full image height vertically. The projector does this without affecting the image quality in any way, unlike other projectors. I did a lot of homework and a lot of projectors out there are very picky about where you place them. Some you basically have to mount to the ceiling, so be careful.

In my "man cave," there is a light fixture (that I didn't want to remove) where the projector would have needed to be mounted. Also, there was no power source up there, and I would have had to hide the wiring (with no attic above). This projector was the perfect solution for me because I was able to set it up on an audio tower off to one side of the room, then shift the image to place it in the center of the wall across the room. I have all my components in the audio tower below, and with minimal wiring, I have a full home theater set-up for less than $1500. Can't beat it.

The HD image this baby throws is just spectacular. I keep it on the "low" lamp setting and it still produces an excellent, bright image. I have the projector about 11 feet from the wall where I throw the image onto a 92" screen. Obviously if you introduce a lot of light into the room it's going to wash the image out, and to watch dark movies you pretty much have to have all the lights turned out. But for ordinary T.V. watching during the day, football games, etc., as long as you close the blinds you'll have a great image. I can't recommend this projector enough.

  4. I bought this projector the day it came out - several years ago. Mine is called the Sony Cinza VPL-HS61 but it's the same thing. This is a 720P projector but supports a 1080 signal. Blade Runner on HD DVD looks AMAZING on my 13 foot screen! (I'm sure BD does too.. that's a different story).

After about 3-4 years of use it's telling me I need to replace the lamp. So I've been in the market to upgrade to a 1080P projector but can't find a reasonably priced one that has the lens shift. I have all my gear (HD Tivo, DVD Players, XBOX, etc) in a cabnet behind my couch to the left and the projector just sits on top. So all the cables reach easily. But that means that the projector is pointing to the edge of the screen, not the center. With lens shift you turn a thumb wheel and the picture moves across the screen (or wall) without any distortion at all. Very few of the newer 1080P projectors have this - NONE of the Sony's have horizontal and vertical lens shift. It is a MUST-HAVE feature for me for an upgraded projector.

THEREFORE I can't justify upgrading. I just ordered a replacement lamp and in a few months I'll save up a little and order another backup lamp. The $350 lamp is much cheaper than a $6,000 projector. I know that I will see an improvement with 1080P over the 720P, but this projector looks so good that I'll be fine with it until Sony gets it together and comes out with a 1080P replacement.

If you are in the market to get a projector on a tight budget.. this is absolutely the one. I spent around $3500 and I think it's listed here for about $1200. Get it before they're all gone because it's a discontinued product.

  1. Excellent Picture. Deep darks, bright and excellent colors. Simple setup. Open box, plug and play. Manual focus and zoom is simple to use. You don't need a lot of room to have a 90" screen in your house.

Only drawback is the fan noise. But can be get used to.

  2. I PURCHASED A REFURBISHED INFOCUS 5700 PROJECTOR. NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS. THE LAMP HAD NEARLY 2000 HOURS ON IT. THE CONROL FOR DOWN WOULD NOT WORK. EVIDENTLY INFOCUS IS NOT REMANUFACTURING THESE UNITS AS THEY STATE. INFOCUS OFFERS A TRADE IN DEAL. THEY WILL GIVE YOU UP TO $150. FOR YOUR OLD UNIT (READ BETWEEN THE LINES.) TRY TO GET INFOCUS TO HONOR A WARRANTY, EVEN MORE TROUBLE. THEY DANCE AROUND YOU UNTIL YOU ARE FED UP. THEIR SERVICE TECHS ARE NOT CUSTOMER FRIENDLY. GOOD LUCK!

  3. I just bought the Infocus 5700 refurbished, and I am simply blown away by it! Somebody left a review saying the refurbished unit was actually USED. This was not the case for me. It arrived in NEW condition, with "0" lamp hours.

I have spent the last several months trying to find a quality home theater projector for less then 1000 dollars, and there is simply nothing else that compares.

Go to Google, and enter "Infocus 5700 Reviews". There are several Home Theater web sites, and they all say it's an amazing projector.

Do not hesitate to buy this projector.

  1. I'm new to the world of projectors, but I love this and got it about 10 months ago(april 2005). It has 2 inputs, VGA, S-Video, and Standard RCA Video-in. Mine came with a 106" draper screen and an HD compoent to VGA connector. Basically I have my Cable Box in the HD/VGA input, DVD in the Svideo, and VCR in the RCA.

The HD is incredible, the DVD is amazing, and the VCR is excellent! The only downside in my eyes is the lack of DVI input, but is not really needed.

It is also very quiet on wisper mode, and the picture difference only very slight. The menus are fantasticly easy to use also, and auto-keystone works well. There are many options to tinker with. I have it connected to a Nakamichi soundSpace 8, which acts great as hometheater sound system. People are amazed the quality of the picture and sound when they see it, and have to force people to get out of my house.

A fairly Dark enviroment is recommended though. I use mine in the basement, which is where my rec room is, so it's perfect. I can open the shades and watch, but the color is water downed.

I paid $1100 for the package in April, and use it 4 hours a day, and still have over 50% of the bulb left.

Go for it! 106" 16X9 HD is jaw dropping!

  2. Anyone looking for a small portable projector should look no further.
It's hard to believe that such a small package could deliver such powerful visuals.

My band StillSuit needed something small and light weight to take on tour, and this was the best option hands down. We use video during our performances and needed something that could fit into a variety of tight spaces depending where we were playing.

It is somewhat limited in connections (no DVI, no RCA audio connectors, no Component video) but has just about eveything you need. Although a digital connection (DVI) was missed the most.

I don't honestly think this unit is capable of true HD (in 720p at least) VIA the VGA/RGB connection. I have an HDTV, and while this projector's picture looks good, it can't touch the clarity of an LCD. But that's not the point.

A tight little DLP unit like this would be a good choice for anyone who needs projection on the go (presenters, DJ's, etc.) or has limited space to make a home theater.

  1. I did a lot of shopping around for a projector on a budget. The Benq 6100 has been great so far. It is very easy to use and the menu is easy to navigate. I actually prefer the picture on the economy mode to any others. This is great because it extends the $400 lamp by 50%.
I have my theater set up in a 100% dark basement and the lumens are great. However I didn't have to add much light to see that you may not be happy if you can not control ambient light. The only complaint I have with the picture is flesh tones. They appear a bit green, but it is not enogh to be to distracting.
If you want to utilize this projector for HDTV be prepared to spend some extra money. You have to find (and good luck) a 15 pin to vga connection/conversion cable. I live in a fairly big city and had no luck finding one locally. I finally found one on ebay. A 25 foot length with shipping was about $50. This should be included with the projector but it is not. I would have rather paid $75 or $100 more at the time of purchasing the projector and not had the hassle of chasing down this cable! That is not to mention it delays you watching HDTV for a week or so.
Over all this is a great value. If you are in a budget and don't mind chasing the cable I spoke about I really recommend this projector.

  2. Component DB15 to 3 RCA was a real problem to find out.
Online you can easily buy something around $200-400 but it
would be a waste of money. I found out only two options at the moment - buy a budget Steren 253-525IV cable ( 25' long) - price varies from $20 to $60 online , thus spend some time to shop around ,
second option was to build a custom made cable out of shielded Cat5e cable. Do not know which one would be a better one
for 25' run. Some people might try to use 3xRG6 cables - and
    a short breakout DB15to3RCA/BNC cable

  3. Word of Warning. I purchased a BenQ projector and had it for a month before it started to fail and turn itself off. I sent it to BenQ for repair and have not recieved it back. That was over two months ago. I phone them every couple of days and get only lip service, they keep saying it is coming. So before you purchase a BenQ product think about the possibility of it getting repaired...or should I say never seeing it again.

    You have been warned!

  4. Low-budget home theatre owner here. Was happy with my unit. Pretty nice picture on a blank white wall. I have a dedicated cinema room that is pitch black so was very happy...until one hour ago. After 300 hours of use my bulb blew. And I never watch more than 2-3 hours at a time, so definitely not a high traffic user. I'm all the way in Hungary and that bulb is about a month's wages for this school teacher. This is a shoddy product, built-in obsolesence to the extreme. Now I have a useless room with a BenQ wart on the ceiling!

  5. I confirm that this BenQ projector has either a crappy bulb or bad color wheel. I have used it for about 2 years, only watching movies on the weekends. The recorded bulb usage is 337 hours, and the picture already starts to flicker. At first I thought it might be the 25 feet long signal cable, so I disconnected the cable and just watched the blank blue screen, still flickers! Its promised bulb time is 2000 hours in video mode. If it is only me, I can blame it on probability and statistics. But it does not seem so.

I have not yet called BenQ, but since I have used it for two years (I have to check the warranty), and people here already complained about their bad support, I don't have high hope on it. The best thing you can do is not to buy it.
