2 comments about Sanyo PLV Z5 - LCD projector - 1100 ANSI lumens - 1280 x 720 - widescreen - High Definition 720p.
- Why spend a fortune on a measly 50-inch flat panel when you can get this high definition (720p) projector and get a 100-inch image or even larger for less money? Sanyo's latest 3-chip LCD projector, the PLV-Z5 builds on the success of its predecessors with wonderfully sharp high definition resolution, excellent color accuracy, and outstanding ergonomics.
This widescreen projector supports high definition signals in 1080p, 1080i and 720p formats, as well as SD signals in 480i and 480p resolution, scaling each of these inputs to fit its native panel resolution (1280x720). And speaking of inputs, the Z5 sports 2 HDMI (HDCP compliant), 2 component video, S-video, composite video and computer (VGA DB-15) inputs, for compatibility with virtually any HD or SD video source or computer.
The lens shift capabilities of the Sanyo are unmatched by any projector in its class (150% up/down, 50% left/right), which makes it very easy to place, along a rear wall, ceiling, or even on a coffee table. You could practically place this projector in the corner of a room and still get a geometrically accurate image in the middle of a wall or screen without having to resort to electronic keystoning.
A couple of small caveats: it is not the best we've seen at converting SD signals into 720P HD format (it's also not the worst), so you'll definitely benefit from having a high quality video processor or high-end upconverting DVD player to improve the quality of standard DVDs. Also, at only 1100 ANSI Lumens, it's not the brightest projector in its class, so it's a good idea to get blackout shades or other light controlling devices if you plan to watch this during daylight hours.
But for a light-controlled home theater environment, and particularly when used with HD devices or a high-quality video processor, the Z5 is one of the best values in high definition projectors available today.

- I bought it to bring it to my home in Argentina, because of the good reviews and because I think it will be easier to find support here for this product than for a equally-priced Optoma.
Setup was easy, image quality is better than that of my 4 year old Sim2 ST200 (DLP), and the noise is really low.
Maybe there is more "pixelation" in the image, but you should really concentrate in the "noise" and not in the movie to perceive it (and also because I tend to have a bigger image than I should, according to official mantra).

- I bought one of these to use in my High School Biology/Chemistry classroom as the School only has a few and the teachers share them. Hardly a day has gone by that I haven't used it. My laptop is linked to it for Power Points or searching the Internet with the class, a video/DVD player is linked to it and even a microscope has been hooked up to it. The image is large, clear and bright, no more kids in the back complaining that they can't see. With so much use it was inevitable that the light bulb died recently. I knew they were expensive but I shopped around on the net and found one for a mere $265. But it's still worth it for the convenience of having the projector in my room every day.
- Great projector for the money. I got over a year of service out of this trouble free. I use it as my home entertainment/computer monitor. We watch movies, tv, play video games, check email, and everything else with this as the main monitor. A good video card cuts out the blurring some have experienced with action sequences. This isn't as noticeable on smaller monitors they have hooked up to their computers. I get a 5'X8' picture without a bulky tv taking up half the room and it looks great. Now for the bad. After a year of hard usage, it has developed a temperature problem. It kept overheating, so I replaced the bulb. That was easy to do, but it still overheated. Cleaned out the vents before replacing the bulb. Now I have a fan blowing the hot air away from it while I'm operating the projector. This has cured the problem. Also, as it is an older model, no digital inputs. I have to use adapters between my computer's dvi inputs and the vga inputs on the projector. This isn't such a big deal now, but it certainly does shorten the life of this projector. Great deal for the next year or two though. I won't be replacing mine before then. Btw, most video cards come with the dvi-vga adapters, so don't fret.

- We are completely satisfied with the Infocus 24 Projector. We purchased it for to be used for our home theatre and to be honest we are amazed at the picture quality and clarity of this projector at such a low price. Colors are true and sharp even on low output settings, and the picture is completely detailed even in low light rooms. The projector is very easy to set up and use and wireless remote works great. The price is exceptionally low for the quality of this product. I would recommend this projector to anyone wanting to use it for work or home. I can't say enough about it.
- This is a great projector for those looking for a more affordable solution.I had no problems setting up or using it. It has a good picture and brightness when hooked to a DVD player. I have not tried it with a Laptop yet.
- This isn't bad as a video projector for the price, its nice and bright. The only downside is it rainbows like crazy. You have to kind of train your eyes to not move while you're watching. If I was doing it again I'd probably go with LCD, but I'm not unhappy with it.
- It works immediately with my Thinkpad laptop. However, my wife doesn't like it as she use a different display setting on her Dell laptop. I needed to change the resolution at her Dell laptop, then disble the graphic accelerator in the Display setting. My wife still complains that it is not working well with her laptop.
So I disable the auto search on the source and fix it to Computer input. One less item guessing. It works well with my presence but my wife still has problem when she wants to use it for her presentaion
To me, it is good for the money as Infocus offers $[...] rebate (though I have not received that yet).
The color and resolution is good for presentation. If you have a 1024 x 768 resolution with no graphic accelerator, it should be a easy connection. If you use 16 x 9 HD resolution, you will have to go through some trouble.
- I purchased this unit and immediately returned it in exchange for the IN26+ for two reasons. The resolution is so low that you can see the 'screen door effect' in the image and the color saturation in a semi darkened room was completely washed out even after spending a couple hours trying to adjust it. It is probably fine for general use in a fully darkened room but as a business projector where ambient light conditions are a constant issue I would steer clear.

- Even though this projector is designed for kids (kindof) it's great for families who love to watch a lot of movies. I got it for christmas and I use it all the time! The only problem is that it has to pretty dark in order to see the movie you want to watch. The screen is kindof pixely and medium quality, but it's not like it sucks. It actually looks pretty good if you don't pay attention to the pixels. If you bought this for your kids, I'm sure they'd love it, and I love it a lot!

- I bought this projector in December and am very pleased with the quality of the product. It does everything it is advertised to do, including a decent job of projecting DVD movies. It has been a real asset to my teaching.
[...]
- I use it in school and it does a great job.
It is very bright and lights do not have to be turned off to see it, plus it is very easy to connect to the PC, speaers, or Video projector. I like the fact you do not need a PC to use the unit.
I connected my PC and DVD both worked fine.
I did have a small problem and tech support was excellent
2 disappointing things
1. You must use the remote (IR) to turn the lamp off
If you do not use the remote to turn off the projector
the projector does not go through a cool down mode which
will affect the life of the lamp.
2. DLP is the newest technology but the colors are not as good
and accurate as LCD projectors
- I like very much this product, only problem that is a big dimention, but to use fixed not problem.
- This projector met my expectations. For the price it was the best deal. I have a large living room but do to the shape and layout a 56 to 60 inch TV would hinder the movement in and out of the room because it would stick out 2 feet. By using this projector I not only keep the 2 feet but I can also move this unit at any time with very little effort. It also can project much wider than 60' and there are no bad seats in the room. I have had no problems with it as of yet, and do not forsee any problems in the future.
- This line of projectors seem to have a fundamental design flaw that needs to be addressed in a recall by InFocus. There is a very small mirror tunnel behind the color wheel (looks like a long prism) that often fails as it is very fragile. This tunnel concentrates and channels the light to the DLP chip and if it collapses it can cause a dark (not black) band to appear at the left/right 1/10 portion of the screen. This band gets wider with time.
The reason is that the glue connecting the four rectangular mirrors of the mirror tunnel peel from the heat; in my projector, one of the mirrors had slipped and fallen in.
Otherwise a fine projector! If only inFocus would replace these defective mirror tunnels!

- We wanted a relatively small projector for Powerpoint presentations. Had to be bright enough for a large room. This is the brightest projector that I could find in this price range. Good news is that the projector is very light weight. It does come with a very cheap carrying bag. The image quality is excellent. Color is true and brightness is even across the entire screen. More than adequate brightness. I did notice that out of the box the color seemed to emphasize towards blue. But this is easy to adjust. I also noticed that gray levels are not up to par with our laptops. We can see details within gray areas on our laptop screen, but can't do so when projected. This may be a common problem with LCD projectors since my old own does the same. Another plus is that this projector works flawlessly with PC and Mac laptops. I had one hooked up to each input, and was able to switch between a mac and pc without any problems. So in terms of performance, I give it 4.5 for my intended uses.
Some points to consider: This projector is made out of rather flimsy plastic. Likely to keep weight and cost down. Perhaps its been years since our last projector purchase (a suitcase size Epson), but the appearance of this projectors just wreaks cheapness. Emphasizing this sense of cheapness is the case. This is a plain black, thinly padded soft case that is not going to protect such a fragile projector. Get a better case if you are going to to buy this projector.
So to summarize: Small, bright, works really well, PC/Mac compatible. But questionable build quality.
