  1. I bought this projector and scaler back in March 2007. I had it just over 3 months when it developed a problem. It was coming up with a lamp error although it was still putting out light. Even though Optoma originally told me that it was a lamp problem, it was not. I had to send it in to Malpitas, CA to have it fixed. I had to pay for shipping (because it was days older than it's poor 3 month full warranty) and insurance. I received it back and it worked but had a "fuzzy" inside now that created an abberation when projected. Through many air blowings I finally dislodged the "fuzzy".

The picture quality is amazing and the scaler does a great job. The 2 separate components work well and minimize wires and cords. I am very happy with this product when it works.

Although the projector had just been fixed in July 2007 and it is now February 2008 (as of this writing) I am having another problem. I have had a few that I have been able to remedy on my own. The picture sometimes will go black after changing a video source and I must re- punch the video source to get it back. However, the projector now turns on with everything working well. I see the Optoma logo then get the "processing" message and even see my DishNet main screen. Then the screen goes blank and the projector get a blinking red flashing error message which means a lamp failure. It can't be a lamp failure when it gets a picture, can it? It came up as a lamp failure in July when the problem happenned before and it wasn't a lamp problem then either.

What is going on? Does Optoma only give a 3 month full warranty on this because it knows it is an inferior product in terms of reliability?

I would hesitate to purchase this product. Maybe this is unfair, but I've had a Toshiba TV for 20 years without ANY incident and a Panasonic plasma for 3 years without incident. But this projector has already had 2 major incidents within a year. Yikes!

  2. The image from this HD81 projector from a 1080p source is stunning and with so much details. The 720p/1080i images are likewise very detailed and incredible. The connectivity is just so flexible and convenient due to the outboard scaler unit. Speaking of scaler, it's a like a high end scaler capable of de-interlacing 480i materials flawlessly. Even my old laserdisc is looking good with this projector.

There's some noise from the fan but it is not enough to be distracting.

The only problem I had was after about 200 hours, I started to see two white pixels on my screen. Later I found out that this is the dreaded stuck pixel but known as a stuck mirror for DLP units. Fortunately, my unit is still on warranty and I just sent mine for repair to Optoma after obtaining an RMA.

I would have given this product a five star if only there was no issue with the stuck dlp mirrors.

2 comments about Mitsubishi HC4900 - LCD projector - 1000 ANSI lumens - 1920 x 1080 - widescreen - High Definition 1080p.
  1. By way of introduction, let me say that I am not an AV or Home Theater expert. However, I have done a lot of research in the last few weeks and finally decided on this projector. I do not regret that decision!
I originally was looking at the Mitsubishi HC1500 and Optoma HD72. Both seemed to get good reviews and the Mitsubishi was under $1,000. I went to tweeters and they only suggested a Sony projector that was almost $5,000. It was nice, but had a dedicated theater room and their lights couldn't come up to show what it was like in normal lighting. Typically for projectors you want it as dark as possible, but I knew that it was not practical for me to have my room dark at all times. Yes, to watch a movie at night - definitely, but to watch an episode or even play an Xbox 360 game there may be others sharing the room and I can't have them in the pitch black darkness.
I went to Best Buy and they had the Optoma HD70 on display. It looked great in the darkened room, but with the house lights on, it also looked good. It wasn't too washed out. Of course everything will look better in the dark, but the point is it is watchable with lights on. I wanted a large screen, but I also wanted to be able to watch things with some lights on. The HC1500 had better reviews from a brightness of the screen (even in lit rooms) than that HD72, so I made up my mind to get the HC4900 after seeing the old HD70 in action.
So I came back to get it and low and behold I was still bothered by the fact that I was going to spend about a thousand bucks on "old" technology - 720p. I knew I didn't have any pressing need to go with 1080p as I don't have digital cable or satellite. Most of my things would be upscaled and I wouldn't be able to enjoy the 1080p anyway. A few Xbox 360 games support it, but not a great deal. So I was going to live with the inferior 720p display. However, I found the HC4900 - the product I'm reviewing (in a very long winded way).
This projector is awesome. After rebates and looking at the lamp life, I determined that the two projectors are close in price. The HC1500 lasts at tops 3000 hours. The HC4900 lasts at tops 5000 hours. Assuming you watch 5 hours a day - which is a lot, that is 19 months versus 32 months. That amount of display time is very liberal. I just won't use it that much, but even with those numbers and the prices of the lamps being the same I would need to replace the HC1500 lamp a lot sooner than the HC4900 lamp. So if I factored in the cost of the lamp and projected out to a year and half down the road, the HC4900 is just a little bit more. So that little bit extra for 1080p was a no brainer for me. Your mileage may vary, but I'm very happy with the purchase I made.
The picture on this projector is great with the lights fully lit, partially lit and of course the room totally dark. I'm am very happy with the results of this projector! Some people complain about the black not being black enough versus other projectors. It is fine for my uses and I can't tell an issue. Again, I came from SD so I'm not the most knowledgeable on this, but for my viewing pleasure this 1080p for this price cannot be beat right now. This projector is super quiet as well. I have to get very close to it to hear the fan and then I have to strain. With any audio the fan noise vanishes altogether.
I have no idea how this compares to other projectors, but compared to a flat screen TV from a price perspective this can't be beat. Just don't forget to calculate in cost for the ceiling mount and a screen and where you will hook up all of your AV equipment. This goes for any projector obviously, but it is good to have these things laid out ahead of time. Remember projectors do not have any audio and you will need a receiver / amplifier.

  2. First off, here is a little bit information about my setup.

I have this unit mounted in my living room which is about 16 feet by 12 feet in dimensions. I have it ceiling mounted approximately 14 feet from the screen I'm projecting onto. I currently run one HDMI source and two component sources to the unit; my Playstation 3 (1080p), XBOX(720p), HD Cable(720p, 1080i).

And as for the unit itself:
    It outperforms my best expectations.

It is almost absolutely silent. My XBOX is louder than the projector is.

The image is 100" diagonal, crystal clear, vibrant in color, and the blacks are black. The image is perfect, I never see a delay in the image or fault in the clarity.

What I would call it's only fault is that it doesn't come with keystone correction. So for a perfectly even, rectangular image you have to mount the projector completely level. This however isn't much of a fault, any time you change the keystone it degrades the resolution (or as I understand it). However if you don't like the fact that your image is being displayed too high or too low, the projector does have lens shift feature which allows you to move the image from the left, right, up or down. So even if you have it completely even with you ceiling you can still have an eye level image.

The universal mounting bracket I got for the unit had four handles to attach to the projector, however the HC4900 has only three screw holes for mounting brackets. It however is very stable.

The ANSI lumens is 1000, but I haven't had a problem with too much light in the room. I can watch movies with two lamps on and not experience a problem.

All and all I'm very happy with my purchase.

  1. I purchased this projector for use for small business presentations. I was very impressed with the resolution and brightness. I recently loaned it for a movie presentation at a small (120) seat theatre where the brightness and quality (projected to a 12' screen) was judged by all to be very good.

  2. Good features, Easy to use, bright enough for a good picture from 20 feet away.
One problem only: If the DVI cable is too long, or not connected firmly then a GOOD projector will have display problems or show no video at all. BUT the EP910 just locks up, and stops responding to ANY of the buttons (including the power switch!) Even completely removing the power cord, waiting an hour, and reconnecting the power cord, did not "unlock" the Projector. Tech support was clueless to solve this problem and suggested returning the product to AMAZON, and get a new one. So I did. But the new one behaved exactly the same.

  3. For being a projector with a single-chip DLP processor, I would rate this product as 5 stars in any medium-large conference room.

As a Network Admin, I've seen and configured many projectors throughout the years, and this one has been on of the easiest to setup and configure. The options menu is very easy to navigate and has plenty of features to perfect your picture. The picture is very bright, and all details and colors come very close to there originals. I've worked with other Optoma projectors (specifically there travel line) and I've never gotten close to matching the colors of any presentation as well as I have been able to with this projector.

In the Architecture field, we're consistently pushing out renderings and drawings that we present to the firm for review and to prospective clients for review as well, and we've been very satisfied with this product. It mounted very easily into our conference room using Chief products to attach it to a ceiling tile and installation was an ease.

This product is comparable to high-end projectors that cost twice as much. I would recommend this projector anyone who is looking for bright pictures and amazing color definition. I tested the colors with 3DMark graphic baseline software and the picture was absolutely STUNNING! Perfect for watching movies or gaming on as well, if that's your intent.

    Two thumbs up from me!

  1. I just bought a z2000 and it stopped working on the third day. Looks like several folks on the AVS forum have had the same exact problem. Basically, the unit powers off, the door shuts 90% of the way, and the warning light of death comes on. I have plugged out the unit to no avail and I will have to deal with Sanyo support on Monday. I JUST got this thing. Not good. I will post let you know how Sanyo handles this situation. Perhaps they can take a negative situation and make it into a positive strength with thier service and responsiveness. Other from that, this PJ is superb.

  1. I bought this machine for my classroom and it works great. It set up easy- I didn't need to use the directions to get it working. I plugged it into the wall and hooked the cable up to my ibook and turned it on, hit enter and it was running. I run the machine with all of my overhead florescent lights in my class on and the clarity of the picture is great. I have not tried viewing video on it, yet, which is why I only gave four stars. I did my homework before buying this machine, and given the opportunity would purchase it again.

  2. Easy to setup and displays 1080i very well. Economy mode is plenty bright enough.

  3. While the $1000 price tag with the screen and a 3 year warrantee are attractive, the cost of around 1/3($320+) the price for a BULB after less than 1 year of use is absolutle ripoff! The 3 year extended warrantee does not cover bulbs, which after I called for service the technician told me that is usually what fails--so the extended warrantee in my case has proved useless. I would tell anyone considering this NOT to buy it because of the SHORT shelf life and cost of ownership after the initial purchase.
