  1. I bought a similar polaroid model last year - very temperamental. When I load a dvd it has trouble accessing the disk and will often read 'no disk' when a disk is present.

  1. I purchased this 5 Disc DVD player to eliminate two of my console pieces from my audio/video rack. I was hoping that this item would replace my current DVD player & my 5 disc CD player as well.

After about a month or so, I realized you are definitely getting what you pay for. When I purchased this, it was under $100. And that's exactly what it is...a $100 piece of useless electronics.

It ruined 1 of my child's favorite DVD's because the DVD somehow jumped off the spinner and got scratched while spinning on the player's inner electronics. The only way was I was able to get the DVD out of the player was to unscrew the top and remove most the of pieces to remove the DVD.

I've also had problems with skipping & many movies become "pixelated". This DVD player does not like scratches on DVD's or CD's (which caused the pixelation).

I wouldn't recommend this to anyone, and I'll will never purchase any type of Toshiba home audio/video equipment again.

  2. I bought this DVD player brand new. I've never owned anything as buggy as this DVD player. (And indeed, it is in the design of the product because I returned 1 to the Toshiba factory for the problems it was giving me -- only to be given another one that merely gradually developed the exact same problems).
After owning my Toshiba SD-5915 for about 1.5 years now, I just don't even use it anymore because: the movies pause for about 5 seconds, 10 or more times during a single movie viewing; sometimes the movie will not finish, instead freezing up and requires being unplugged from the wall to turn the player off; the remote has few buttons left that work; the picture warps sometimes during the movie; any discs made from a computer or a recorder (like the one that I use to record TV shows) are difficult to get to work -- usually will play partially and stop or just do not start at all (and I esp. cannot rewind or fast forward these because that initiates the frozen pause I discussed above and ends the movies or home movies or whatever on these dvd's immediately.)

Overall? Toshiba damages their reputation with this dvd player. You are throwing your money away if you buy this product.

  3. I got this to stop getting up all the time to change disks in my single DVD player. Now I'm getting up lots more trying to get this to work. Other reviews say it's slow to respond - they aren't kidding. Push "open" to access the tray and it grinds away for ten seconds deciding what to do. More often than not it'll stay closed and go back to the movie. Sometimes (not often) it freezes completely and has to restarted. Being cheap, it doesn't remember where it was and you have to scan through the movie to find your place. Also ultra susceptible to scratches/fingerprints so the picture stops and jumps frequently. Avoid like the plague.

  4. I discounted the bad reviews on this site and bought this DVD/CD player in July. We have been using a sub fifty dollar model for a couple of years and I wanted to replace that and our CD changer with one unit. I wanted to go with Toshiba because we have a Toshiba TV, I thought we could use the new remote with the our old TV and consolidate some remotes.
The first disappointment is the remote control's layout, it is the worst. It's all most unusable.
Then 4 out of 5 DVDs played will freeze. I thought that the rented DVDs were dirty or scratched so I have taken to cleaning them before playing, but the sub fifty dollar DVD has had no problems playing the same DVDs that this player freezes.
Audio CDs play fine, CDRs will skip and pop, the same CDRs will play fine on other systems.
This is the worst purchase I have ever made. Avoid this piece of junk.

  5. I currently have a Toshiba TV and love it. I thought I'd purchase a Toshiba DVD player since I love my TV. I have completely wasted my money on this piece of junk. DVD's skip, remote sometimes does not respond, sometimes a DVD will freeze. I put the same DVDs in another DVD player in my bedroom and they all worked fine with no skips/freezing. As alot of the other reviewers said, I agree.....your just throwing your money away here.

  1. I ordered this DVD player before reading the reviews here, and that was a mistake. It plays normally about 50% of the time, and the other 50% it looks like it has a tracking error, even though there's no such thing on DVD's. My experience with Sony trying to get this fixed has been laughable, as they always say it's the DVD's, which always play fine on my PlayStation2. Support is terrible, so I'd recommend against buying this unless you like a nice looking paperweight.

  2. I've always recommended and purchased Sony brand. I didn't buy mine at Amazon.com, but I'm here 10 months later to buy a replacement. It stopped reading DVDs yesterday. I removed the cover expecting to find the sensor needed cleaning. What I found was that the disc motor isn't spinning it up to speed any more. Reading the other reviews, it's clear this isn't an isolated incident.

  3. I got the NC615 (not from Amazon) in July 2002 primarily to check for DVD-R playability and quality control (I'm a video producer and burn DVDs for clients). I had a total of about 3 hours use on the player in the first 8 months I owned it. Then I bought Sopranos DVD sets and started using it more regularly.

It was then I noticed it would stall, freeze, and then cut off periodically. At first it was so infrequent that I tried to attribute it to disc abnormalities and let it go.

Dealing with defective products is such an incredible hassle . . . expensive shipping, multiple calls and many, MANY minutes on tech support hold lines, pulling out entertainment centers and dealing with a mass of wires and dust in a small spaces, etc. Also, since the measly 90 day labor warranty (by far much more important than parts) had long passed, I knew I'd likely be footing 90% of any repair bill at that point anyway, so I succumbed to the denial that the player was at fault.

I could only delude myself a few months longer as the problem got worse and worse, the player eventually freezing and shutting off 5-10 times during any viewing session longer than 20 minutes. Of course by this time, the parts warranty had also conveniently expired.

But since I've dropped over $20,000 on professional Sony video equipment in recent years, I thought Sony customer service just MIGHT want to keep me happy, so I phoned them. I was wrong. I was met with absolute indifference, abruptness, and a refusal to consider the individual circumstances which made it a travesty of fairness for me to have to pay for the repair of this product, which cost well over $200 at the time I purchased it.

To make matters even comically worse, my sister was given the same player for Christmas of 2002, and hers started to exhibit similar problems late in 2003, also conveniently well after the labor warranty had expired and just as the parts warranty was expiring.

Two out of two identical products with the same defects in one family is hard to attribute to sheer bad luck. This was very likely a lemon product, an inherently defective player with an abnormally short useful life that Sony is refusing to stand behind, even for a loyal customer that's given them many thousands of dollars in business. Because of this unforgivable customer service breach, I will never buy another Sony consumer electronics product and will certainly try to avoid purchase of as many of their pro products as possible.

I advise others to STEAR CLEAR of this player and all those in direct succession to it, which is likely to be anything with a model number like NC6##.

  4. The one good thing about this product is this. When the motor that spins the discs burned out, I was able to buy the identical product with a different problem off of ebay for $20 and replace the motor. So many people have a problem with this product that you can easily pick up an extra one for spare parts.....sad.
I tried to just buy the motor, but Sony has some deal with the manufacturer so they won't sell this $2 motor to anyone but them.

  5. My DVD no longer works.... Why? I thought it was the discs. I purchased brand new discs opened the package and placed directly in the unit without touching anything elese... Nothing happened. I have always loved SONY brand name. I just finished reading what others have written, I am having a hard time handling the truth... Unforetunately, I have to concur with others that this unit is NOT something to purchase. I hope that its current status of 'Unavailable' is because the people at SONY read these reviews as well....

  1. I bought this dvd player in spite of some of the negative reviews because I have always had faith in JVC. My faith was rewarded as it plays all the types of dvds as advertised. And, the picture and sound quality is excellent. For a low price, it does a wonderful job.

  2. My mother used to say, "If you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all". Well Mom, this JVC DVD player is certainly Cheap! Sorry Mom, but I feel I've got to warn others that there may be better choices.

My wife bought this DVD player as JVC was considered a good brand & the saleman told her it was. Yes, it played DVDs, but it could not rewind (play backwards) or fast forward. If those buttons were pushed, this JVC DVD player jumped to random places in the DVD. The controller also had to be within a narrow range (reception cone) to work. My previous Panasonic DVD, which died suddenly, could receive almost anywhere. I also had trouble with the closed caption being properly displayed.

Finally, who designed the black buttons on a black background? Even in bright light they were difficult to see & read, let alone the dim light most TV viewing is done in.

Seems like all DVD players now suffer from having to be China-Cheap & are designed to be poorly designed, frustrating, throwaway items.

  3. Ever since I bought it, it has worked improperly. It freezes every 10 seconds or so, then unfreezes, and then the counter resets to zero. Of the 30 or 40 dvds I have tried to watch on it, I only know of 4 dvds that it did not freeze-up on.

Don't bother with the replacement plan! It will cost you just as much time and money packaging and shipping this to the service provider. They will not replace or refund any product until they have attempted to fix it several times.

Don't lose faith in JVC. My other JVC works fine. I'm sure this was damaged in the shipping process. But that is not an expense you want to incur.

  4. I am a long time buyer of JVC products, but lately they seem to be generating nothing but bottom of the line items. I purchased this DVD player when my old JVC DVD player got zapped during a power outage. The old player worked flawlessly for over five years, but this one couldn't even make it through a day. This player skipped and stuttered through every dvd that I tried. I definitely don't recommend this DVD player to anyone.

It's sad to see that a company that used to be my preference for electronics is quickly becoming a company that I will never buy from again.

  5. This particilar DVD player was purchased because my previous JVC DVD player stopped working. It has since started working again, so this one is used primarily as a CD player. It works fine, but the buttons on the unit black, the unit is black, and the labels are a dark subtle color. If you don't have bright light in the room, you can't see which one to push. Back lit labels would be a huge improvement. The unit is surprisingly light and appears cheaply made, but is still working without issue. It's about 9 months old.

  1. This was received as a gift two years ago. The remote stopped working just after the one year warranty ran out. The other day the entire unit stopped working. The laser stopped reading discs suddenly and would then read "No Disc." Sony has been no help. I've now been lied to by three people. I was told that you can either pay $141.70 and send it back for who knows how long and incur possibly more repair fees or for the same price get a like new unit of the same or better model and don't have to send the broken one in. After waiting the 7-10 days with no receipt of a new unit I called and was told the same thing as the first service person and to give it a few more days. Then today I got the same lies. This person told me they couldn't tell if it had shipped but just to wait. I told them to put me through to shipping where I was told that what I had been told earlier was not correct. I would, in fact, to send the unit it and it would take 10-15 days once they received it to ship the "new" one. I filed a complaint with that person and expressed my extreme displeasure. They did nothing to help. Needless to say, we are not sending the unit in and will spend our money on a product other than Sony.

  2. The player completely powers off during cd play. It's completely random, meaning it could play through a cd perfectly fine, and then the next time, shut off halfway through the cd. Theses cds are new and not scratched. Also, DVDs skip, even when no scratches exist. As other opinions state, I too have had good luck with Sony in the past which is why I purchased this model. I will probably have to toss this player(it would be immoral to sell it to someone else) and buy another non-Sony product.

  3. I bought the unit approximately 18 months ago and it suddenly will not recognize any discs placed in the carousel (spins but reads 'No Disc', whether brand new or previously used, or CDs or DVDs. Although I have yet to contact Sony about possible fixes for the machine, comments by other purchasers have not been encouraging. It is likely my next DVD player will not be a Sony.

  4. Well I will start with the positive. I purchased this unit the last part of May of 2002. and until this last week (06-05-06) It has been a VERY good and reliable product. The unit has more features than the average person will use and WAS very reliable for anything I used it for. I began getting a no disc error or insert disc message and thought ok nothing big needs the lens cleaned. Well I bought a 10.00 Maxell DVD Lense cleaner last night at wal-mart and it would even read that. I called Circuit City (store of purchase) Guess what out of warranty but call Sony. Called Sony "We have an exchange for that item of 141.00. I didn't pay that much for it newhat the heck...I am very upset with Sony and there quality of workmanship/products. As far as I am concerned I will not be purchasing or recommending their products for anyone.

    Sincerly
    -Electronics Technician/Sales

  5. I've had this player for four years and haven't had any problems with it. I'm about to upgrade my TV to an HD unit, and, though this DVD player has no HDMI jack, it does have component video jacks that will work.

I don't think I'd buy this today, since HD formats are starting to come out, but it's been a good player for general use. How nice is it to have one box for CDs and DVDs?

  1. The first one of these I bought wouldn't even open and close the drawer - it jammed and stuck due to some mechanical fault. I exchanged it for a replacement and tried that out. While it does seem to do all that it claims, I was amazed to find that this multi-disc player has NO multi-disc functions! To change discs, you have to get up and push a button on the front of the machine. If I am doing that I might as well change the disc myself. I expected as a minimum that it would play 5 audio CDs in sequence - it won't, and it won't play 2 movies in a row either. Also, the remote stopped working for a while, then started again. My experience with RCA/GE is that the quality control has been terrible for several years, and it seems nothing has changed. I will return this unit and buy a better brand.

  2. I purchsed this and returned it with a lot of headache. It was defective. nothing was working properly.should be out of the market and not in circulation. it's a waste of time for the customer.

  3. Someone in there review said it did not have multi disc funtions, but I can say it does because I own one. It has a great price and very good quality. Picture on TV is incredible and has zoom feature which makes widescreen movies look bigger and much more....

  4. At first I was a little disappointed by this unit because it does ocasionally lock up for no reason, but unplugging and then (re)plugging the unit always restores it back to factory settings. Be careful when moving the unit since it is easy to cause discs to become lodged back near the reader. What I love about this DVD player (and I'm looking for another used one) is that it plays every disc I throw at it, whether PAL or NTSC, with strange color formats, widescreen or fullscreen, and I like the direct remote buttons for subtitles, audio, views, etc. If you like to burn your own dvd's, this is a great player for your home burned collection.

  5. I own this unit and it does not function properly. If I am not unplugging it in order to reset it so that it will turn off or on, I am banging my head against the wall while attempting to get it to play factory DVDs and CDs. The unit also tends to skip ahead a chapter when the fast-forward button is pushed. This piece of equipment is frustrating to try to use. After 5 years, I have developed a better touch for this finicky machine. I would avoid it if I had it to do all over.

  1. Unfortunately my wife and I purchased this "product" without reading the posted reviews here. ALL are entirely accurate! I cannot calculate how many hours I have spent trying to figure out what is wrong. No loading, skipping, freezing, not OPENING when it freezes, all down the line, combined with 100 trips to and from the video stores to exchange their "defective" DVDs. My wife was firmly of the belief the DVDs were just "dirty" but I finally decided (this agrees with one of the reviewers) there is a balance problem in the drawer. When there is a no-load, jiggling/adjusting the drawer sometimes (not always) fixes it, but only until the next time, and will not stop the freezing problems. If my wife had a dime for every time I said "this thing is a piece of @&*!" she would be a millionaire. This is very late but if this product is still on the market in ANY form stay many miles away. And Philips' arrogant lack of response (as reported; I have no personal experience here) is virtually criminal in this day and age.

  2. This DVD player isn't worth the space it takes up in your entertainment system. I've had exactly the same problem as everyone else - skipping really badly; didn't matter which position I selected in the carousel. I think I was able to watch 3 movies without disruptive skipping over the last 1-1/2 years. Though I did purchase another one once I realized this was a problem, I kept trying to see if I could figure out what was wrong with the Phillips. I initially thought the DVD was dirty or defective, only to find it played fine in my portable DVD player. I finally disconnected the Phillips and am ready to toss it. I won't even donate it to a thrift store for fear that some family may look forward to using it only to be at least as disappointed and frustrated as I was. Do NOT purchase this DVD player unless you're a glutton for punishment.

  3. I owned this this player.It could never play a dvd,without skipping...I exchanged,the unit 3x,with no luck.Finally,it only played cd discs...I sold this set for 5 bucks,at a flea market!!If you see this model,run the other way...Check out the feedback,from my fellow,reviewers...I hope this helped you..Thank you Stewart L.

  4. It is very difficult to get the player to play many of my DVD titles that work just fine elsewhere. It also takes an abnormally long time for the unit to recognize and play a DVD. It responds sluggishly to commands and it frequently just freezes and will not respond to any commands. I would stay away from this thing.

  5. We needed to know if this unit (Philips DVD 782C) was compatible with DVD+RW disks so I Googled it and found this Amazon listing.

We were totally amazed to find the reviews we found ... and wish we had done this years ago INSTEAD OF SPENDING ALL THIS TIME STRUGGLING WITH THIS POOR EXCUSE OF A DVD PLAYER. We have spent countless hours MR. Clean'ing and SkipDr'ing disks just to get them to play (and sometimes even that didn't work).

Just in case anyone else comes along, take the excellent advice given several times in this collection of reviews ... RUN THE OTHER DIRECTION WITHOUT QUESTION IF SOMEONE OFFERS YOU THIS DVD PLAYER.

Now, we do NOT believe this is a fundamental problem with Philips. We have, and have had, many fine products sold by Philips. We are guessing this particular DVD player was the result of some very poor product planning that went very badly before, during and after the fact. Hopefully the person(s) responsible has (have), per usual corporate practice, been promoted farther up the ladder where they can no longer inflict this kind of pain on Customers.

P.S. We tried to give this product "0" stars but Amazon requires at least "1" star. Probably a quid pro quo agreement of some sort we imagine.
