- Note: I am actually reviewing the HTP-2550DV My family purchased this system when we were remodeling our basement. I went to the store and browsed the isles for a little while until this one caught my eye. I liked the fact that it came with an A/V Reciever so i could listen to the radio on it. The biggest downside is that you can't program the reciever remote for the DVD player or vise-versa. The other is that the mounting hardwhere that the system includes can't be hung at an angle. I now have to go buy some seperate mounting brackets.
The sound is amazing! When I put my Led Zeppelin DVD this thing roared. Also, with Star Wars, this system is amazing!

1 comments about Denon AVR-985S 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver.
- This was my first purchase of a surround sound system. I did a bit of research before deciding on the Denon AVR-985S and am quite pleased with the result. The build quality is excellent and the system is extremely flexible. Flexibility of course can make the setup more daunting. The auto-setup feature where you place a microphone (included in the package) at your most frequent listening position and press start makes the speaker set-up (a time consuming experience and then you're never sure you have it optimized) a piece of cake. That said however if you are just looking for a system you plug in and it works, this is not the system for you. It takes time and patience to hook different brands of equipment together and have them function as expected.
The On Screed Display (OSD) is pretty straight forward but fortunately is not required to set the system up. I say fortunately because my HD monitor is only capable of displaying 1080i or 480p on its component video input and the OSD appears to be 480i. It therefore is unreadable on my monitor in setup mode. I have a composite cable connected to another composite input on the monitor and it works fine there but requires the additional step of switching the monitor input if I want to use the OSD. All the setup options appear on the Denon's front display one option at a time but it helps to have the manual in front of you with the menu tree so that you can quickly navigate to the option you want to change.
The biggest drawback I have experienced so far is the remote. I was hoping that the macro capability would give my technically challenged wife (if she could hold it to her forehead and have it do what she was thinking we might have a chance) one button to turn everything on and set the system to watch her favorite program that is recorded on the VCR everyday. Unfortunately the monitor requires several seconds from power on until it will respond to any other commands and the macro capability only stores ten commands without a pause. Ten is not enough to program dummy commands while the monitor warms up. It does have a large set of pre-programmed codes for other equipment and using those I was able to control everything in my system. It will learn other remotes but the buttons available for learning are limited by the type of remote it is learning and the lables on those buttons don't always correspond to the function you want it to learn.
All in all it is a great system and sounds fantastic hooked to my Infinity TSS450 speakers. If you live in an apartment don't buy this system, your neighbors will hate you. At 100W per channel it will crack the plaster and sound great doing it.

- How about shipping internationally? Not much info on the products by bose. on an unrelated matter - are jewel cubes available just by themselves?
- ...When I purchased my HDTV, I was offered a "floor model" bose system for $300. I had heard that Bose was a good brand, so I took it...It's amazing...Get this system, you won't regret it. You'll get goosebumps from it.
- The BOSE LS 12 quality sound and "futuristic look" convinced me so much I had to buy it.This system is kind of expensive but it really worths it. First You dont know were the sound comes from because the speakers are so powerfull & small, not like other BIG speakers that don`t fit well and look messy in the house.
Highly recomended for anybody that like to her good sound in CD`s, CDR`s and movies.
- This is God himself.Make no distinctions about it.I have heard from many so called "Audiophiles"(basically a bunch of losers who think earth shattering bass and big balls is all there is to life) that Bose products are a waste, they are useless, they are over priced, bla, bla bla and the works.that is until i entered the Bose Store in Uptown,Bangalore, with my Pink Floyd DVD.Once it started playing "Shine on you crazy diamond", time stood still.Believe me.No one moved for another 6 mins, and that is the power of Bose,my friends. it is just different.it is just too good.it makes a clear distinction between hard bass, and depth bass. You get clarity and the depth of music is amazing.this is for the true connosiuers of music.audiophiles included.
i suggest life isnt complete without a Bose.when u die, eventually,u will carry the musical tones in ur immortal journey to another world. ps: listen to Cafe Del Mar Vol.7 and Buddha Bar VOL 4 CD1,when it is raining and is cold outside.u will experience bliss.u will experience a high that will put crack and extacy to shame.this is life.this is why we all live.eventually help ur soul get liberated,by the Bose.Jesus ain't do it man.Bose do.
- ...actually bought one of these, and you should've seen the look on her face when she came over to my house and heard a REAL home theater system! I felt so sorry for her, I offered to come over to her house and check that all the connections were properly set up.
Well, I went and saw that yes all the speaker cables were correctly put in. In fact, she had gone out and used those gazillion dollar Monster cables, poor thing---she was always such a gullible, trusting woman.
But that was that: there simply was no way around the simple fact that for the outrageous amount she paid for this system, it produced barely mediocre sound. Just lots of treble and some exaggerated bass, which would be okay if you only watch bang-bang-wham-bam-kaboom action movies. However, she loves musicals and dramas---which only exposed the total scam that this overhyped and overpriced Bose stuff really is.
To their credit, Bose does however honor their money-back policy which UPS and FedEx probably appreciate greatly.
