  1. I purchased these headphones after much contemplation and review because of the sound quality they promised especially enhanced bass response. I was not disappointed. The bass response is huge! The highs are great but a bit too much in the background but not muffled. The fit was a bit tricky at first but included is a number of different types of replaceable tips which I finally got the best fit with the double silicone ones.

That's the positives. The negatives are the headphone construction is not very durable and doesn't stand up to more rigorous applications such as workouts at the gym (my primary usage) and outdoor activities such as hiking where conditions are not ideal. I have owned these headphones for about a year now and the connection point of the wire to the headphone comes loose (breaks) and has done so three times. I sent the first pair back and UE replaced it no problem after the right side broke but it soon broke again and I used epoxy to reattach it. Now the left side has broken and once again I'm in the role of repairman. Terrible! The last problem I have found is the type of wire used in these headphones. It is rather stiff and retains its coiled shape causing me to bend and work the coils out of it just prior to putting them on. Also, the wire itself as it is visible thru the insulation is starting to discolor, showing signs of corrosion. The sound quality has not noticeably diminished however it leads one to the conclusion that the wiring is not sealed well indicating further lack of thought in its construction. Other headphones I own have flexible wiring and seem to handle daily usage much better and don't have this coiling problem.

Overall, I would not recommend these headphones to anyone who plan on using them for working out or any other applications where they might be exposed to less than perfect conditions.

  2. Ultimate Ears is a company that will take care of you. I had the headphones for almost two years before problems arose. The wire that hooked into my mp3 player was frayed and my music sounded washed out. I called the company, immediately talked to a human being, and within 3 minutes had a free replacement wire on its way to me (you can easily replace the wire attached to the earbuds). In fact, the customer service representative even apologized to me that the quickest they could get the free replacement to me was within 3 days (I live on the opposite coast)! I didn't need a receipt or serial number--how much easier can it be? Amazing customer service that has made a customer for life.

I love listening to hip hop and electronica (house, ambient), and these headphones allow you to really enjoy bass far beyond any earbuds I've ever used. Sure, it won't be as if you were in a club, but you will not get any closer with any other earbuds. The sound is great, a huge improvement over the mediocre headphones that come with almost every mp3 player. Also, because these stick in your ear, you can listen to a lower volume than you used to and still hear the music, which really saves our fragile eardrums. One warning: these headphones are very big, and it will take time to get used to them sticking out of your ear, but after a few days, you won't notice any difference.

  3. Ok! There are two very important instances that these headphones come into question. One is, if on a tredmill at the gym, the headphones keep
falling out of ears and 2 they stick out of my ear too much, so getting comfy lets say with you head on the left or right side on a pillow is out of the question! The resaon I gave them 4 stars in the sound quiity
is very good. The base is rich and tight and the highs are very clear
which, in my opinion, at least in the sound department makes the Ultimate Ears Super.fi EBs a very well-balaned set of ear-phones.

  4. To put it simply, these were the most disappointing monitors I've ever had the displeasure of owning. That might be a bit harsh. The highs were very good, and the bass (when you finally, miraculously got the position right) was good, but not the best.

My main gripe is the overall package. These are far too big, and the adjustable wire cut into the tops of my ears. But they are ridiculously big.

I thought my Grado's and Stax SR-001 MKII were uncomfortable (you can get used to the Stax after a week) the 5EB's took 'uncomfortable to another level.

And because of the weight they slipped out of position far too easily, even with the cheese wire they use for the over the ear support!

The biggest problem is that midrange which was (I had to get rid of them) very out of sync with the treble and bass. It was far too unpredictable. With one song the singer was two miles away, with the backing vocals screaming down your ear, with the next track the singer was screaming down your ears and the backing vocals were two miles away, and you can't predict with the next song, which it was going to be.

Don't get me wrong; I love my UE's..... I have 3 pairs of them, but my favourites still remains the Metro.fi 2, which kicks.

As for the 5EB's a very bitter experience, and a bitter disappointment.

    Dreadful, truly dreadful.

I'll give them two stars because the bass and treble were good, but the overall package wasn't what i expected for money i spent on them

  5. these things look wierd but they work well-function over form I guess. They are comfortable-if you chew when they are in your ears there is a little noise generated but it is nominal....

  1. THIS JBL 220 Headphone are the best I recomend this to anyone acctualy am planing to by another pair.

  2. This headphone definitely ranked among the best in the $30 range. I was looking for a replacement headphone for my mp3/mp4 player. I have a Sennheiser CX300 which has good sound. I had a Sony MDR EX71 headphone which had ok sound but poor built quality-the wire broke. Apparently it is a common problem for some of the Sonys.

I was looking at Creative's EP-630 and Denon's AH-C551. I was leaning heavily toward the Denon which has great reviews on the internet. But I came across this JBL in a local Target store and thought the included accessories were excellent. It was closer to the price of the Denon than the Creative. Then I search about its review and found it quite good. Amazon had it at about 1/2 the price of the local store and it comes in white so I decide to give it a try.

And I think its sound is comparable to my CX300 in clarity and and may be slightly less in bass. The noise isolation also is a bit less than the CX300. The plastic tips that came with the unit were a little too flexible for me so I switched them with the tips that came with the Sony EX71. It is important to get a good fit in your ear. I didn't find its bass that good until I tested out with different plastic tips on the headphone. If you find that you have to put the earphone too far into your ear, you may want to try the next larger size tips. The cloth-covered wires are very interesting. It is definitely better than the Sony but I still have to untangle them from time to time. They are not as thick as the CX300.

For any of these noise-isolation in-ear type earphones, they will produce "cord-noise". If you use it during workout and constantly brush against the cord or you eat while you listen to music, you will hear the cord noise. You can let the music drown out the noise Or, don't blame this earphone, this "type" of earphone is just not for your activities.

Since I have an iPod and a MP4 player, I double it I will use the airline adapters to listen to what are offered on the plane. But it is good that it is included. I think I will find the included ear cuffs or chin strap useful. The best bonus for me is the included semi-rigid cloth zipper case. It can fit my iPod and the headphone in there.

So I think the sound quality itself is quite good in its price range. The included accessories definite make it a great buy at around $30 or even at higher range.

  3. These are really great earbuds. Originally I was using the earbuds that came packaged with the 80gb Zune and these are a lot better. I like a very loud bass so With the volume all the way up these sound great. Some songs like Voyager - Daft Punk have a very strong bass and these earbuds don't cut out any of that sound. It sounds great everywhere else so you still get very clear mid's and high's. These earbuds also come prepackaged with a lot of accesories that to tell you the truth, I never used. I bought these in a real store and even without the extras these are still worth the $80. I definitely recommend these earbuds for someone not looking to spend a lot of money but still looking for great quality.

  4. I am not an audiophile, but even my ignorant ears can tell that these earphones are awful. No bass, treble is piercing. The $10 earphones I bought from Target are much better. I am trying to return mine, but seller's policy does not allow - so don't take a chance on these!

  5. I will vouch for the magnificent sound quality on these in-ear headphones--and this is coming from someone who disliked the in-ears. They fit perfectly, cancel almost ALL exterior sounds, and provide high fidelity audio.

Ah, the down side. They broke after a couple of months. The fabric material that the cord is constructed of is EASILY pulled and frayed by the jack. After two wonderful months, the sound began cutting off and finally...nothing. With alot of hassle, Target replaced them. They also broke two months later.

Great audio, bad construction. Buyer beware.

5 comments about Shure SE420-K Sound Isolating Earphones (Black).
  1. The Shure SE420 may be a dual driver design but it does not sound as so. I purchased these earphones to upgrade from my older pair of Shure E3c's and I was expecting to hear a quality difference between a wideband driver vs a dual driver design. I was shocked after spending time with these that suffice it to say they don't sound any different from my older pair. I had the chance to try out a pair of SE210's as well and I think the SE210's sounded the same as well. Sound is hard to really put into words though so everyone is subjective to there own opinion and experience. However I would like to add that I did my listening experience with these earphones during the day for a few hours and during the night for 6 hours. Day vs Nightime listening is the tests I put these through and for me I am able to hear clearer when I am relaxed so nightime was when I was hopeful to hear a difference but overall I did not hear anything new I could during the day. The bass and midrange don't seem to have any noticeable difference with the added driver vs a single driver design. I tried listening through several sources and it did not make a difference but overall I used a CD player as that was the highest quality source I had.

Comfort wise though the SE series from Shure is much more comfortable to place in your ear and comes with a greater variety of eartips. You don't have to squish the foam tips to place them in your ears. Rather you can just insert them with a bit of a twist. The cables are nice and sturdy and would take some effort to really break so they can stand up to abuse.

Perhaps you might buy these earphones even so and I still recommend you give them a try if you want. You never know how they will sound until you hear them but as for my experience these dual driver earphones don't sound as though they are dual drivers to my ears!

  2. ***Please see updated at the end of the review.****

Recently purchased the SE420s after using the SE310s and the Jays q-Jays. Wanted to try another set of dual driver headphones to compare to the q-Jays and was interested in the comparison between the SE310s.

The SE420s provide as much of the clarity as the SE310s but adds the bass that was missing. With the SE310s, I need to change the EQ to rock to get the sound that I wanted. With the SE420s, I do not need to do this which is a good thing.

Compared to the q-Jays, I feel the SE420s edge them out in terms of quality of sound. The SE420s provide a better sound stage and it's easier to locate instruments while listening to my music. The only downside is that the SE420s are probably 3 times the size of the q-Jays.

Also, the new version of the SE420s that I received came with an extension cable that fits the recessed jack for the Apple iPhone. This was a nice surprise. Shure must be doing this for all of their latest headphone extension cords.

Price was right as I was able to pick up the SE420s for $250 shipped from an eBay reseller of Shure headphones. I thought the $250 was a good deal from the $300+ that you usually see for these headphones.

    ***Updated***
Found an awesome deal on the Shure SE530s ($50 more than what I paid for the SE420s). After careful comparison, I've decided to sell my SE420s and keep the SE530s. For the $50 premium, I feel the SE530s are the better deal. The fit isn't as flush the SE530s, but they are still comfortable to use and the sound is absolutely amazing! If you have the money and keep looking, you can find the SE530s for under $300. The SE530s also came with a new modular cable that works with the iPhone.

  3. I purchased a $5 pair of generic headphones for my trip to Seattle as I had left my Bang and Olufson earbuds in the wash the night before (not the first time, but I one of the drivers was tragically ruined this time around.) Of course I was saddened to be brought back into the world of the common person's music experience. I had raved about the B&O's for so long, and now, they were gone!!! :(

Needless to say, the $5 head phones I bought lasted me an hour; before getting caught on the seat, ripping the wires. While in the DFW airport I went looking for some headphones to rival my B&O's. Low and behold I came across a store with every headphone you could think of. I was like a kid in a candy store. I had no cash in my bank account (student loans ughhh) so I was looking to spend $99. I tried them all and found they couldn't beat my B&O's. So I looked into the more expensive ones, thinking to myself, I can wait and save for a set later and go without for the trip.

I came across the Bose line (all of which I could never recommend to a friend.) So I hit up the Sennheiser and the UE lines and didn't like anything below $1000!!! So I came across the Shure line. I tried them all on. After having about 15 different IEM's in my ears (not just Shures), I came across the 420's and the 530's. While I had no words for the 530's quality I did have a heavy gasp when I heard the price. I wanted them so badly, but the $420's were only $350, and I must say, there was a noticeable difference between the two, but as far as the price to sound quality goes, these IEM's took the cake. The 420's beat out everything I had heard up until the 530's. Having fallen in love with them, I bought them on the spot with my credit card.

Looking back on it, I wish I had bought the 530's instead. I love my 420's, don't get me wrong! But my next pair will be the future equivilant to the 530's. I should look into trading up if they'll let me do that.

  4. I originally purchased some Bose Quiet Comfort 3 earphones, but returned them and bought these instead, and am generally glad that I did. The pure sound quality on these is better than the Bose. The only area where the Bose might be better is if you want to listen to some really loud pounding bass, although the Shure's have good bass in my opinion. I have tried both these and the Bose on airplanes and commuter trains, and I think the noise cancelling of the Bose is only slighter better than the noise deafening that these provide. If you have the Shures on even medium volume, you won't hear any airplane or trains noises. Turned off, the Bose will probably block a little more sound. But these are about 1/20 of the size, and can fit into a small purse if you wanted or in the side pocket of your work bag, while the Bose are huge, both to transport and to wear. That is the real difference in my mind - that, and the pure sound is better with these.

My only complaints are that it really takes some time to learn to fit them just right to your ear. If you don't have them fitted just right, you lose half the sound quality and sound isolation. Sometimes if you jerk your head quickly one of the phones might get pulled a little out, and you have to spend 30 seconds tinkering with it to get the earplug sealed just right again. If not for that, I would give these 5 stars.

  5. I've had the SE420's for about a month now and they are out of this world. I was looking to buy the 530's but just couldn't justify the steep price. I found these babies new online for about $215.00 and words can not describe the pure musicality of these IEM. For all the folks that complain about bass response, this is more user error than a issue with the 420's. Being that I have a Zune, I don't have the luxury of having a EQ, which is fine with me. The 420's give you exactly whats recorded. To quote the 1970's R&B Funk group the Ohio Players "Heaven Must Be Like This".

  1. The earphone cord is short and thus when you plug into the port on Exercise machines (Elliptical trainers, etc.), to listen and watch tv, you may have a problem if you are over 5' 8". You will have to stoop or adjust your position on the machine. The sound is good for music player use

  2. These work ok for what they need to do. The sound is ok but not stellar. I like to listen while I run so I took the metal clip and hooked it onto the white winder for the cord. Otherwise it slings back and forth when I run and my earphones fall out. The cord does not wind up easily, and 2 days after I got them I noticed the plastic is tearing on the cable because it was caught in the winding mechanism. The cord is very short, but just perfect for me since I'm 5' tall. Taller people would probably want to avoid this unless you are wearing your MP3 player on your arm. I keep mine in my pocket and it works fine. I am disappointed with the winding mechanism, but otherwise these earphones are ok.

  3. I usually don't write reviews, but this product had a couple of shortcomings I thought should be mentioned. The sound quality is decent, however the following are dealbreakers for me....

    1) The cord is not long enough- when fully extended, it is only about 31", not enough for me to have an ipod in a deep pants pocket (and I am under 6' tall)
    2) the retraction on my pair stops 1/2 way and I must help the cord spin back in.

  4. Within 30 seconds of getting the headphones out of the clambshell packaging, I had already broken the winding mechanism. (My mistake: pulling on one side of the winder without simultaneously pulling on the other side.) My husband used some tools to reset the wires on the winding mechanism and then I was off to a good start. Fast forward 6 hours later, the first time I listen to the headphones, and I tried to re-wind the cord afterwards. The winding mechanism did not work, and I looked down at one of the wires and noticed exposed copper wiring! I am NOT rough on equipment, this is just a shoddy product, I can't imagine it working for anyone.

  5. I've had these for a few weeks now. They work great, and sound great. I use them to hear talk radio over the internet, and music on my computer and ipod. No more tangles and everything is MUCH NEATER!

I'll be buying another pair for myself soon.

  1. I was so excited when I got these earphones - they look great, they seem really well made, they are beautifully presented in their box and come with some awesome accessories like the carry case. Then I put them on, plugged them into my ipod and.... no bass. And I'm not exactly a base-fiend, I don't turn up the volume all the way or anything. But I expect to be able to hear drums and bass guitars. It's like they're completely hollow. I am going back to my $8 Sony earphones.

  2. I've been using the JBL references with my ipod for about 8 months now. So much better than the white iPod headphones.

    Pros:
    - Plenty of bass
    - Nice middle range and overall sound
    - Small physical size
    - Cool cord/cable
    - NO LEAKING SOUND - I turn up my music all the way and nobody in public places can hear what Im listening to.
    - Good included accessories in the package - extra size buds, case, and bigger line-in adapter
    - REALLY expensive for headphones in their division

    Cons:
Honestly I really can't think of any

  3. I bought this item and it just came a couple days ago and accidentally I ran over it with my car it cracked a little bit but it was still working good after it happened so it is very durable even after it was crushed. I just bought another because its the best I ever owned.

  4. I bought these earbuds at a local department store and instantly fell in love with them. What I didn't realize at the time was that I could buy them through Amazon and get them for less than HALF of what I paid for them in the store (INCLUDING SHIPPING)! I quickly took them back and preceded to buy these on line. Incredible! Thanks, Amazon!

Now to elaborate on the header: I own a pair of high end JBL speakers that I have had since the mid 80's. They are phenomenal. I love JBL's products and these earbuds were no exception. The 'buds have the signature JBL sound.

I also own a tube amp for my guitar. Some of my friends argue with me that the tube sound is out of date and archaic. The bass in these earbuds have that special warmth that Shure, Sony and JVC lack. The other brands are good, don't misunderstand me... They just don't have the "presence" these little babies have.

I enjoy a wide range of music: from AC/DC to Sinatra, The Who to Lionel Hampton and Olivia Newton John to Meat Puppets. It ALL sounds good on these 'buds!

I am considering getting a backup pair, God forbid something happens to these. I read somewhere they don't make them anymore? Pity...

Yeah, there is a little extra "umph" in the bass. Listen to a movie soundtrack and you will feel like you are there in the theater, the way they shake your head...

If you love bass and understand the "tube amp" argument, you better buy a pair of these while you still can!!!

  5. I was prepared to be knocked down by the bass and overall sound of the JBL220. Instead I've heard really good sound, but it is hard to get real bass from the headphones. I think the clue is to learn how to wear it - it is not enough just to stick it into earhole - the silicon ring must somehow well fit in the canal - and for the first time it is not easy to get it on. When you learn how to were the eraphones you can start searching for the bass, there are some good fitting when you hear the reall bass, but I was expecting more. I've never heared the Bose in-ear so I cannot compare it. What else I can tell - they sounds better with iPhone than iPod classic 80GB. Best thing - they really sit in you ear, very good cord (material). The worst thing - when you move and you touch the cord - you hear "scratches".

  1. These KOSS headphones perform as advertised and then some! I can no longer hear my wife's soaps while I'm enjoying pleasant classical music and using my computer. The noise cancelling feature is great!

  2. I bought these so my wife could listen to her MP3 player while mowing with the garden tractor. These work as both hearing protection from the tractor noise, as well as headphones. Even with the headphone volume up all the way,the music volume was marginal. If you have a weak source, these may not be the phones for you. Sound quality is ok, but I really bought these for sound isolation more than audio quality. The phones seal around the ears very well, but are still comfortable. These were the most reasonably-priced phones for my application.

I will also use these with my scanner at the local race track. The mono/stereo switch is convenient to listen to mono sources such as the scanner.

  3. At first look it don't look that good. Once I started actually using it, I liked it very much. The volume control knob on the side of the earphone and the ear comfort was nice and comfortable. I have only had it a few weeks, so you should ask me in a year how I feel. As a general rule the other headphones I had only lasted a year. I hope this one lasts much longer because I really like it.

  4. really I don't see why these deserve anything less than a 5 star, so that's what I'm going to give.
I like how tight these headphones are and the fact that other people can't hear anything you're listening to, even at full volume. The sound isn't perfect, but it's good enough. And they look very cool ;)

  5. I bought these mainly for the warranty, as I've used many good headphones that would just quit shortly after the warrant period. A lifetime warranty is very helpful.

As for the headphones themselves, they surpassed my expectations for a forty dollar set. I was really impressed by the sound isolation. I'm taking these to college dorms, where sound echos like crazy, and these headphones muffle up the environment noise quite a bit.

The fit is about average. I could feel it pressing against my head, but the ear cups were very large and ample for my ears.

The sound is above average. It's not the best ever, but it's definitely good for the price paid. This is NOT for bass enthusiasts. The bass is pretty non existent compared to DJ headphones. But I listen to a lot of vocals, and they come through pretty clearly.

Overall, I'd recommend these to anyone who doesn't need bass. I took off one star just for the bass, but really I'd give it four and a half, since bass isn't too important to me.

  1. First of all, did I just read a review saying that these had too much bass? Thats crazyness these are just right. I will agree that bass is exceptionally strong at low volumes, it evens out and sounds excellent and balanced when the volume goes up. For the money I paid I have no complaints at all. These phones are really well balanced and clear, If I listen to metal I can still hear the voices where as all my other headphones tend to blend all the sound together. When I listen to acoustic and bluesy music, the highs are clear and sharp.
Another thing on my list of favorite things is the comfort, I have medium sized ears on a big fat head and these fit better than any I ever worn, I forget they're on! The cord is short, no longer than needed for a laptop or ipod/zune.
One last note, these headphones look much larger than they are, in person they are a perfect minature of studio headphones, really not big at all. I recommend these to anyone who wants cool headphones that sound great and fit like a glove!

P.S. The red Ryan Sheckler phones are exactly the same as the others, just with that black signature on the side, it looks cool in person though.

  1. I got a pair a year back when they just costed 10$, the sound qualty is supierior to anything else on the market for under 40$. the accoustics good , you would hear instuments and tones that you wouldn't hear from from most home systems.

On the down side, they lasted about a month. One of the wires developed a short, and the in-line volum developed a dead spot, the silecone buds would get dirty a dried up from dust and use, rendering performance and the sound reduction. The silecone buds also, have a tendency to come off, but that's and easy fix with super glue.
Dont plan on moving or doing anything active with these buds, cause you'll hear the cords vibation eveytime you move. it creates a stehoscope effect that over powers the music.

  2. I didn't read through many of the previous reviews before buying these earbuds. I was looking for a mid-priced set of earbuds that have an inline volume control. These seemed to fit the bill.

I got them and put them in. First off, they're very comfortable. They seal nicely and provide some very good isolation.

The bad part is that they have almost no midrange. I can hear tons and tons of lower freqencies and some pretty good (not great) highs. But midrange was almost entirely missing. It makes my music sound terribly muddy and vocals are almost non-existent.

    I guess I'll keep looking....

  3. The audio quality is fine.

These things need to be pushed far--too far--into your ears to be in place. Yet, if you are moving about, they will still fall out easily.
I lost several hours of sleep last night because the skin of my ear canal hurt after wearing these for 45 minutes earlier in the day.

  4. These earphones are what I've been wanting for a long time. Something affordable but not cheap. These earphones are the best you can get without spending an arm and a leg. The sound quality is top notch, like you're listening to a 2 grand sound system in a car. The sound is crisp and the bass thumps nicely. Also, I can use them to jog if I run the bud over the back of my ear and bring it down upside down into my ear. This has the wire rest on the back of my ear so when I jog the earphones don't jar out. The case that comes with it is nice and protects all of the product.

Overall: Amazing both in sound and stability.
    I recommend these to everyone!

  5. I got a white pair of these for my birthday in April, and they were fabulous. The sound is crisp, and you have great volume control. The bass is also great for people that really like heavy-bass music.
And then, in August, all the sudden, the right ear broke, and just stopped working for no apparent reason. I can live with that, so I just let it go. But then 3 days later, the left ear broke just like the right one! No matter how many ways I positioned it, or cleaned it, they just wouldn't work.
They lasted 5 months....not so good....

  1. Headphones are great for running, sweat proof and water proof so are excellent for running anywhere. They dont totally block out external noise, so do not use them as ear bud replacements. but overall, once you get them on your ears, no amounting of running can take them off unless you use your hands

  2. I bought this pair of Sony headphones because I have an older model of a Sony Headphones, thinking they will be the same or better than the older model that I have. I was in for a big surprise. I couldn't finish my workout at the Gym. It was terrible sound, hardly any base whatsoever. Sound quality is the worst. I am returning mine to Circuit City tomorrow.

  3. These turned out to be exactly what I was looking for. They fit nicely in the ear but stay in very well because of the removable over the ear clips. The sound is fine for running outside or on a treadmill. So far, sweat hasn't shorted them out, unlike my other ear buds. The cord is short for wearing my ipod on my arm but can be lengthened for wearing it on your waist.

  4. These fit excellent! Love the over the ear design that is PERFECT for wearing with a helmet! But the bass is very poor in these buds. I will continue my search for this design with BOOMING bass...

  5. My first set of Sony earbuds (Fontopia MDR-E828LP's) finally shorted out after seven years of constant use and abuse. I had used them from working out to chilling out. They sounded great and now I needed a replacement. I bought these ear buds with the intent to use them while working out. The over-the-ear clip design works fantastic and is very comfortable. I don't notice the clips unless something puts tension on the cord. That's when I feel a tug on the ears, but the buds stay right where you stick'em. At first listen, I was not impressed. I thought, "Where did all the bass go?". I turned up the volume a little more to see if that would help. At this point the treble was quite overwhelming. I figured my ear wasn't getting a good seal so I repositioned them to the point that I couldn't hear ANY ambient noise. I turned the music back on and turned the volume back down. I was blessed with breaktakingly accurate sound. These 'phones have a truly flat reponse from 10-23,000Hz (My ears are only good up to 16,500, but the performance is still quite remarkable). These things are CRYSTAL clear!! No boominess (from the lack of TwinTurbo circuitry), detailed, and punctual. Amazing sound for $40.00! Sure and Klipsch watch out!

Sony is marketing these to the wrong demographic in my opinion. I wouldn't recommend them for working out as my hearing is affected by changes in blood pressure, heart rate, breathing, and movement. All that tends to drown out the middle and (in particular) lower frquencies. For working out I recommend MDR-E828LP or MDR-E827G's. Another concideration if you're in persuit of ridiculous headphone bass is to go with the MDR-ED21LP's. This is what I ended up purchasing for working out. The treble is slightly muffled compared to the 28LP, 27G, and definitely the 40EX's, but the bass is VERY pronounced and they fit securely. I should be good for another seven years or so.

Choose carefully (paying attention to specs like Sensitivety, Frequency Response, and ear piece shape/size), and you'll be rewarded with an affordable set of headphones that are sure to please for a long time. :-)
