- In general, these headphones are very clear. If you aren't looking for pounding bass these are fine.
The only problem is...the bass. It's not very appearent at all.
They will be uncomfortable at first but you will eventually get used to these.
The sound isolation is excellent. Nobody could hear anything coming out of these....now could i hear anyone around me.
These will not suit everyone.
I grabbed these for around $30 so I'm pretty satisfied with what i got for the price.
- For those rating these one star, you must be using them improperly. Admittedly, I got mine for $40 at a competitor site (I buy plenty at Amazon, but that deal was amazing and last all of one day). I had and sold my Ety ER4ps for a pair of Atrio M5s, but I missed the Ety sound sig, so these fit the bill. With the Futuresonic foamies, these sound simply awesome, and best of all, you don't need an amp to make them sparkle, through they do sound even better with a decent headphone amp.
They deliver clear, crisp mids and highs, and the bass can easily be maximized with a little EQing. Of course, as has been repeated here over and over, you need to get the proper seal for max SQ.
Again, if you hate something stuck in your ears, then stay away (get a pair of Yuin PK2 or PK3 ear buds instead). But if you don't mind the isolation and ear closure, these babies are a tremendous value, even at double the price I paid.
- A great pair of headphones is the poor man's version of a high-end speaker system since you get all of the quality and signal purity but with a much friendlier price tag. After using these extensively for the last three months or so, I thought I'd share my thoughts:
Noise-cancelling: Those fancy active noise-cancelling models (i.e; Bose) get all the press but they are actually pretty inferior to these in terms of how much outside sound they block out. The high end Bose ones block up to 20 db for $300; these can block up to 35 db. This is like the difference in the sound of your TV when you have the dishwasher/laundry running. Basically, the less outside noise, the purer the sound you're hearing. These are top-notch in that regard.
Sound Quality: One thing that jumped out at me was how clear you could hear individual instruments. I'm a sucker for lush, complex arrangements (think Radiohead) and with these headphones, each instrument has it's own distinct place in the mix. I regularly discover harmonies/riffs/effects in songs that I had never been able to hear before. The bass is tight and the treble is very clear. Subjectively, I would compare the improvement in sound/experience over a $20-30 pair to be like going from a standard-def TV to HD.
Style: You can pretty much throw away the included case because of its morbid obesity. Beyond that, the headphones themselves are distinct and attractive.
Functionality: I have sworn off my factory Honda sound system and use my Zune and these for car travel and general errands. They're perfect for this because a.) They block out most engine/road noise and b.) they're inconspicuous if you're worried about being pulled over for wearing headphones. Also, just as they can block sound out, they can keep sound in making them library-friendly.
Cost/Benefit Analysis: $50-75 Range. I would say that with this purchase, I didn't just upgrade my headphones, I upgraded all the things that I use my headphones with. My Zune with factory headphones was nice and functional, but these phones make it sound like a high-end system. I've rediscovered alot of my back catalog just to hear how it sounds with these and what new things I can find. Again, the closest comparison I can make is stepping up from a CRT TV to HD; the former was pleasant enough but the latter is what gets your jaw dropping.
Notes/Tips:
*The sound quality of in-ear phones is greatly affected by how well they are inserted into the ear. FOLLOW THE MANUAL'S INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO INSERT THEM. Essentially, you're looking to form a seal between the headphone and the outside world. Make sure to test both included earbuds to see what gives the better fit. While the winged earbud (as pictured) looks cool, I'd highly advise trying the included foam earplugs to see what's a better fit.
- This bud doesn't sound as good as er-4p, doesn't look as cool as er-6i, but it deserve my recommandation if it is cheaper than etymotic as a substitute. Audio quality sound simular to er-6.
- These are amazing earbuds. I have listened to some high end sennheiser's and beyerdynamic full headphones and the high end details these bring out rivals them. Be prepared to be very disapointed with your low quality mp3 files or crappy player as these earbuds will bring out all the details you may not want to hear. The bass response is fine on these and when seated properly in your ear is more than adequate. I can't understand those who review these and say they have no bass response (turn down your headphones morons and you wouldnt have ruined ears!!). The noise isolation on these is incredible, completely drown out airplane rumble on very low volume, ditch the noise isolation tech and go with in ear plugs, better isolation and cleaner sound.

- it looks nice in its retail packaging, and i own some other products such as two webcams, and mouse and others from logitech, so I bought myself this headphone. Its personal preference, but I do not like how it doesn't sit on the ear but instead your head is squeezed between it. it feels like it is going to fall when I wear it, so i can't imagine listening to my mp3 with this headphone on the bus or something. the changing the color plate does sound kind of cool though, but the around the head piece of plastic is not the comfortable. finally, yes it does look good, and works alright, but comfort wise, i'm gonna stick with my sony single U above my head type headphone that doesn't leave my ear hurting after just one song.

- These ear buds have a somewhat unique design feature in the form of an air-filled, form-fitting, silicone donut around the driver housing. I found them to be very comfortible but slightly large for my ears. Sound quality is average, but better than the standard junk that comes with iPods. One big problem that I experienced with these buds is that when I would shift in my seat or build up a static charge, I would actually get a shock on the inside of my ear canal. I dont think it's dangerous, but it really hurts when it happens, which is much more often in dry air (during winter). The case that is supplied with these is novel, but I found it hard to manipulate the vinyl-like donut shell to wrap up the cord. So the case is fairly useless except for long-term storage. I used these buds for about six months before they stopped working in one ear, most likely due to strain on their cheap, thin wires. I recommend avoiding these even if you find them for a few bux like I did. They look cheaply made close-up, and they are.

- Too poorly constructed. My first pair broke within two weeks of purchase. HP didn't want to replace it but eventually did and the second pair had broken within six months.........and I protected this one! The plastic band just broke.........I would not buy this one again!!

4 comments about Sony MDR-Q23LP w.ear Stereo Headphones (White and Green).
- So I'm a big Sony fan and I was looking for a compact headphone without going the earbud route (those little things hurt my ear canals and are worse for your hearing than headphones) so I thought I would compromise and get the earphones without the plastic "head" part that connects the left and right. Bad move.
These are horribly designed. The "hook" part that goes over the ear doesn't leave them snug to my ear for good sound/bass. Furthermore, I was expecting 2 wires: one to each earpiece splitting at the neck line. Not until I got them out of the box did I find that 1 wire goes from the player to the left ear, then a wire goes from there to the right ear. In short you have a right earpiece hanging off of the left earpiece, which I'm sure you can imagine gets tangled pretty often. Also, if you're jacket sleeve gets caught on the wire near your player, it pulls the left earpiece off of your ear.
If you are considering these for running purposes, DO NOT buy them as you will be horribly disappointed. I'm a walker myself and am having trouble getting used to this loose fit.
The one saving grace - and only reason for a 2 star rating - for these is that the sound is very decent as with all Sony I've ever owned. But since they fit so loosely, this is irrelevant.
- I wear headphones to listen to my mp3 everyday, all day at work. I had another pair of these for a long time and they finally gave out on me. I searched all over for a new pair because none of the substitutes were as comfortable. I like the nice long cord so I can put my mp3 in any pocket I want, the sound is great, and I like the style.
- I bought these to replace my iPod ear buds and was sorely disappointed in them. The sound is decent, but in order to actually hear your music without turning the volume way up, you need to actually press the earphones against your ear as it's impossible to get a snug fit. I'm also utterly confused by the need for the right headphone to be attached to the left headphone - it's just replacing a wire hanging in front of you with a wire hanging behind you. I'm taking these back today and looking for something else.
- This earphones from sony have an exceptional sound quality, is one of the best, and for this price is amazing, they look beautiful and sound like that too!
You wouldnt expect less from sony of course
Only thing is that it sounds so hard that sound leaks more than wanted and people around you can hear what you're listening.
But thats not a big deal, trust me

- the thing i noticed about these is that you dont know how things are really supposed to sound until you use quality headphones, and well...these are quality.
- I went from my default mp3 player headphones to these, mostly because the default ones were giving me static shocks if I would move around and get from certain chairs. Also, the default headphones my mp3 player came with would fatigue my ears after awhile -- couldn't go a long plane flight or wear them the whole time at work. After reading a bit on that the thing called the internet, I learned that these were very comfortable headphones. And they are. I have a big head that other headphones have trouble with or headphones that end up crushing my ears but I've had no problem with these at work, at home, on the plane, gaming, or whatever.
To repeat what another reviewer has said about these: You don't really realize how different music sounds with a good pair of headphones till you listen with them. The first time listening to them, the music had life: for the lack of a better word. Putting in my default headphones, everything sound flat and dull and with my 500s sounded beautiful. Certain subtleties also became apparent as well, guitars had a little extra something to them and songs like 'Rhapsody in Blue' took on a whole new life (a better one). In my week or so with these headphones, I've refound my classical music collection.
I love them and am very happy I got them for less than $100 shipped. Ultra comfy. Fantabulous sound. Great buy.

- Very good product, nice case to move around with. I would have given a 5 star rating but the volume slide control only lowers the volume and doesn't totaly turn down the sound in case you need to hear something around you going on, but most others don't even have that. The sound is great. I would recommend them and the price is good.
- I got these for my mp3 player because the ones that came with it were terrible and broke soon after I got them. But these headphones were terrific! They take a lot of abuse from being thrown around all the time without breaking.
Also, the built-in volume control is perfect, barely thicker than the cord, so it can still wrap around an mp3 player fine.
I highly recommend this product to anyone looking for great earbuds at a low price!
- If there was a rating for comfort level of these earbuds I give it 5 stars. I only gave it 3 stars because soundwise, I wish it had more bass, I find the overall sound too "bright" for me. But generally ok, but not that great. I also like 'phones with volume control, I find the JVC had the weakest volume boost around. I think they did this cos they warned against extended listening at hight volumes on their packaging. No biggie, still works for me, just have to up the volume a bit on my player.
I used to have Sony's which I recommend too, but having had them for less than 6 months, the wires cut out on me a week ago. I've subsequently read numerous reviews that it was it's weakness so I didn't want to buy them again and wanted to try out a different brand. I'm willing to stick with these, for the price they seem well-made and thumbs up to the elastic material of the buds that needs no foam and feels like they're not even there.
- I bought these a few weeks ago and have used them almost everyday since them. For this price, you can't do any better. They are very comfortable, the sound quality is great, and the volume control on the line is a very useful feature. I've owned multiple pairs of other earbud headphones with the detachable ear-fitting pads and I've managed to lose all of them within a few months. These are definitely the best headphones you can buy for this price.
- These headphones are great if you want something inexpensive and average quality. I bought these because I needed something quick after my iPod earbuds broke. They got pretty good reviews and the price was right, so I decided it would be a 'smart buy'.
The sound quality is my biggest problem. I listen to music a lot and I believe these ear buds are probably doing damage to my ear because I have to turn them up so high to hear anything when I'm commuting. I used to use Sony MDR-V150 Monitor Series Headphones with Reversible Earcups which have awesome sound quality, but were cumbersome while traveling. So when I switched to these I noticed the downgrade in sound quality immediately.
Another problem is the shape and construction of the bud. At work I some times fiddle with these in my hand and I somehow managed to pop the speakers out of the plastic casing. This didn't "break" them, but I find it weird and kinda "cheap" that this happened. They also fall out of my ear easily.
However, it's not all bad. You get what you pay for. These are priced right. If you're looking for an inexpensive set of ear buds and don't mind sacrificing some sound quality I'd say these are for you! However, if you're used to high quality output and/or are a commuter and will be in somewhat loud environments, I'd say keep looking, I still am!
Compared to the iPod ear buds, I'd say they're pretty comparable. Maybe the iPod ear buds have better sound, but not by much. Also, the little volume knob is convenient, but doesn't adjust precisely.
