- Yes, if you are in the store comparing them side by side, the newest 1080p units for $800.00 plus or more do look a little better, but not that much. Got it home plugged it in, let it search for channels, in Dallas area we have a dozen or more, it found them all and they all come in perfect. Plugged in my sat rec, dvd player, great picture!! It is really a bargain too, I found it at my local Fry's for $1299.00. If you have to have the latest spend more. If you want a good all round TV this will do the trick!
- I have been a Sony fan for years. Despite this, I let myself get talked out of buying a Sony HDTV in favor of a 50 inch Panssonic Plasma. Well the plasma picture was great but in short order it became obvious the unit was defective and I returned it. (see my review on the Panasonic)
So, when faced with the decision again on which TV to buy I went back to Sony. For some reason the sales rep at BB still did not like the Sony. She said if you get right up on top of the TV it has the appearence of looking through a "screen door". Well it's a 55 inch TV, I am never closer than 8 feet away, and can't see what in the world she is talking about. In the store the pic looked just as good as the 1080 TVs sitting next to it.
I bought the Sony, got it deliverd and WOW!!!!! Great picture, perfect viewing angles for all the seats in my family room, and it is just plug and play. No worries about burn in or image retention. This is the ultimate TV for watching sports. The picure is wonderful. The included speakers are also pretty darn good, but I do use my Sony Home Theater System now. Also hooked up my Sony Up-Convert DVD player, and Spiderman never looked better!
OK, why 4 stars???? DLP, and other projection styles TVs do not handle the shades of black as well as plasma, plain and simple. No a big deal for sports but a minor issue with movies. This unit does use the XL-2400 bulb, and I have found them online for @$150.
All in all, I love this TV. It was hundreds of dollars less than the 50 inch plasma and I love watching it. I a o glad I bought it!
- We are more than pleased with this SONY 55inch proj TV. I shopped for an LCD and/or plasma TV.. but really got a lot more for my $$ with this TV. The picture is just great!.. even better than I had hoped for. The sound is ok for everyday TV watching,.. but to really enjoy movies and concert DVDs.. add a home theater system.
BEST OF ALL.. at Sears I got a super deal.. The TV was on sale for $1199.. plus I got another $250 off for using a SEARS card (paid it off the next week.. no interest). A few days later I found this TV on sale again for $989.. Called SEARS.. they gave me back $210.. so I ended up buying this TV for $739... what a deal!
- This is the 3rd HDTV that I have owned in the past 3 years. The first 2 I've had were Panasonic's which did well for their time. I was blown away at the picture quality of this TV for the price I paid. It was on clearance when I purchased it and saved more then 30% off the street price.
The biggest improvement to this technology that I've seen has been the 3 LCD chips that allow the separation of the color bands. This provides more accurate color reproduction. Also with the auto iris technology that Sony employs in this TV, it vastly improves the contrast ratio of the set.
I've had the set for almost 2 years and have not had to have a bulb replacement (knock on wood). Although buying the 4 year warranty will save me the day the bulb does burn out.
Some people have complained about fan noise with these TVs although the noise level is not louder than a fridge or a computer in low power mode. It does not take away from the viewing experience in my opinion.
The only complaint I have is the lack of a 3rd HDMI input, but most sets these days I notice do not have more than 2. It'd be nice to be able to plug in my Dish Network receiver, Xbox 360 and my upconverting DVD player.
I didn't give this 5 stars because I do not feel it is the perfect TV, it is however a GREAT value. On the green side of things it takes less energy than a 40-inch flat-panel LCD.

- I couldn't decide whether to give this four or five stars. I decided to go with five because this is a great product with only a few minor set-backs. First the good: A big, smooth picture with excellent sharpness, good skin tones, and vibrant color; loads of inputs on the back plus one on the side.. split screen mode, "pause" function, decent built-in stereo speakers, and a few other goodies make this an excellent buy for such a huge screen.
Now for the hidden faults:
1) Loss of detail in dark areas - This by no means ruins the picture, but it is noticeable on some shows/movies. Very shadowy areas tend to be pools of black at times. This usually isn't an issue though, as dark areas are most likely where the director does NOT want you to be looking.
2) Not-so-quiet fan - This is a projection tv, so it uses a fan to cool of the bulb used to provide light. While this fan is NOT extremely loud - it is noticeable if you have the volume below five, or if you're watching a very quiet scene in a movie. You would think that with the advances in technology these days, they could make a (nearly) silent fan!
3) Sluggish reaction time - Startup is about 20 seconds before you see anything, complete shut down takes almost two minutes due to the fan having to cool off the bulb completely after each viewing, channel switching (up&down) takes a full two seconds, and changing of the inputs is awkwardly slow - the input menu forces you to scroll through the inputs with about a 4-5 second delay between each.
4) Awkward menu screen - The menu screen is text only and is not organized into sub-menus, thus forcing you to scroll through all of the options line-by-line until you reached the desired setting. What were they thinking?
5) Pops & cracks - This is by far the oddest of the bunch. Every now and then (twice a day?), the set will actually pop or crack loudly. This may be due to my tv stand being a few inches too small, but it's a little unnerving. It is a huge structure, so hopefully this will stop once everything finally settles.
In the end, if you can get past its minor quirks, this is still a strong offering from JVC that gives you a big, beautiful picture without breaking the bank.

- Best for Gaming with my PS3. Blue ray looks great. EVERYTHING else is not so good at all! even 1080i dvds do not look very good on my sony upscale dvd player using hdmi. analog tv is absolutely horible. it has issue reproducing ANY image that is not 1080p. AND IT DOES NOT UPSCALE ALL IMAGES TO 1080p LIKE IT SAYS IT DOES. (GENESES TECHNOLOGY) ITS BS. IM TRYING TO SEND MINE BACK BUT IT COST 250 TO SENT IT BACK INCLUDING 10 PERCENT RESTOCK FEE. if you want a good all round tv, dont get this.
- I paid a premium because I purchased it over a year ago and I bought it at Best Buy (usually not the cheapest). It is a GREAT TV. We love it.
Broadcast HD looks great. OTA HD looks great. Upsampled DVD looks great. The only picture I have seen that looks better is the high end plasma panels. Most plasmas don't look near as good.
I wouldn't change a thing unless I was able to make myself wait until the prices started to drop.

- This TV is an upgrade for me in two ways. First, I was replacing my 42 inch Sony 42A10. Second, I actually ordered the JVC 56FH96 from Pavilion Electronics.
After not hearing that my order had shipped 5 days later, I decided to contact the seller. I talked to a nice guy named Mitch and he informed me that there was a problem with my order and he was about to call me. I thought, "Oh great..."
Well, it turns out that the '96 was discontinued, and even though the Amazon page showed that the '96 was in stock, they had actually sold out. Before I could argue with Mitch he said, "So if you wouldn't mind, I'd like to upgrade you to the 56FN97 at no extra charge." I told him I didn't think that would be a problem, and he put me on hold for a minute while he made sure he had that set in stock. While I waited I reviewed the '97 on Amazon. He got back on the phone with me and had me confirm the change in the order. My set was shipped out the next morning. Unfortunately I had to wait through the weekend before it arrived, but it was worth it.
The set is great. Right out of the box it wasn't really impressive, but after breaking in for a few hours it really started to shine. Detail is very impressive and black level is much better than my Sony. The only gripe one could have with performance is that colors tend toward green (whereas my Sony pushed the red.) This can be remedied with a professional calibration, or by yourself if you are brave enough to use the service menu (you can learn how to do this on AVS Forum, but you really shouldn't monkey around in the service menu with reckless abandon) Any TV of this caliber really can benefit from a professional calibration though, so you may want to consider adding $300 or $400 to the actual price. Don't get me wrong, the TV has a GREAT picture, but with calibration it can be even BETTER.
I've really never seen a better hi-def image than I have on this set. Watching Casino Royale on Blu-ray was a revelation. Playing games on the PS3 is just awesome. This TV has a great picture whether in a dark room or bright room. Off-axis viewing is excellent.
You may hear people complain of "silk screen effect or SSE" which is when you can see the surface of the screen on really bright images, but to me this is not a problem. What is a problem is watching plasmas, LCDs, or conventional TV's with shiny screens that reflect any and all light. RPTV's like this one have a non-reflective screen. No glare! I'll deal with a little SSE any day.
This TV is phenomenal. I can't imagine that it wouldn't make you happy.
- I bought this TV almost a year ago. The only problem I had with delivery was it came much sooner then expected. I ordered it Dec 19 and Amazon estimated a January delivery date, which was fine because I going to be out of town Christmas week. Eagled called Dec 23 to arrange delivery! Eagle held it for a week until we got back into town.
This is my first HD TV, so I don't have anything to compare it against. I don't see the green hue noted by other reviews. The first thing I noticed was the cooling fan was really loud. A co-worker bought the same model and said his was quiet, so I called the TV repairman and they replaced one of fans because it was very loud. The TV has 3 fans.
After using the TV for 6-7 months, the bulb blew up, which is very pre-mature at 600 hours. Fortunately, the bulb was under warranty, which normally costs $200 to replace. I didn't want to wait 2-3 weeks for the TV repairman to come out and replace the bulb, so I drove across town to picked it up myself. The bulb is easy to replace.
I have basic analog cable, which carries the HD broadcast channels un-encrypted (clear QAM), so I just plug the cable into the digital coax input to get digital HD channels. The analog SD channels don't look very good, but I suspect this is common for most HD TV's.
I use my 5.1 sound system, which sounds much better than the TV speakers, which is probably common with most TV's.
I recently purchased an HD-DVD player (Toshiba hd-d3/a3) and it works fine with the HDMI input. I have The Bourne Identity on DVD and HD-DVD and noticed more detail in some of the scenes, but the improvement of the HD-DVD over the up-converted DVD wasn't huge.
Pros
o Great picture for the money.
o Good connectivity options
Cons
o Poor user software interface (setup menu's)
o Slow switching between channels
o Long term longevity doesn't look promising after replacing the fan and bulb the first year.
o PC input only supports 1024x768 and I cannot get the HDMI input to work with the DVI-D output of my computer (the manual says this isn't supported)
Overall, I'm happy with the TV and hope it lasts a long time.
- I purchased a floor model JVC HD-56FN97 from a different store for Christmas because I was floored at the price of $899 that I got and I succumbed to temptation to by my first HDTV.
I love this set! The picture at full 1080p resolution, which is not so hard to find anymore, is just breathtaking, and the 56" size is enough to make it feel like being at the movies. It's amazing! There is no lag effect with this set (maybe because it's a projection TV), frankly I think it's way better than most LCD's that I've seen. The only drawback is you can't hang it on your wall since it's about as deep as an old fashioned TV, but I wasn't hanging mine anyway.
The only downside so far are two things, for which I'm subtracting 1 star from my review:
1. At factory settings the color green/yellow does tend to explode on the screen with neon life! I have made some adjustments to tone things down that have fixed most of this, but there is still a slight tendency to be a little overdone on the green/yellows. I have read elsewhere that you can completely correct this by accessing the Service Menu, but then again that's not something you should have to do! Anyway just by adjusting picture settings and using HDMI input it is no longer a big deal. Frankly the picture is just amazing, especially at this price.
2. The menus are not super easy to use - in particular changing between input sources is a pain, and I find I have to do it frequently. The main problem is there is about a 3 second delay with each input as you scroll through them. It should let you scroll through the input choices and only do the picture adjustment delay when you actually switch inputs!
Overall I've got to say I'm super happy with this set. Those are really the only drawbacks for me. Having a 56" 1080p set that looks awesome in this price range (even the $1550 shown here) seems like a great deal to me.

- I bought this TV at Video Only for $925 on 12/15/06 (best price going anywhere that I could find), and am very pleased. I pretty much think that CNET's review is right on for how it performs. It's got great detail, seemingly true color, and nice features--all that fit the needs of my 15 x 30 living room. There are more than adequate inputs, and though the remote's clunky, it's easy to setup and tweak settings to fit the room/lighting. I'm also happy with the sound, since I do not plan to connect it to a theater system any time soon--the TV's sound captures all but the very lowest rumble of bass (I compared in the store, knowing I would not be using a theater system, and this TV's sound won hands down). As for drawbacks, again read the CNET review. They're minor for an HDTV in this price range--for me, the blacks are fine with adequate detail, and the "styling" of the silver TV case (with matte black screen frame, which is important) is subtle, which fits in well in the 1913 "craftsman" house I live in. All and all, I'm quite happy.

- I have owned this TV\DVD player for over 6 months now, and I simply love it. I use it in my master bedroom and the size is just perfect, I use for my tv use, not so much for the DVD use for I enjoy the sound coming from my home theather system that is hooked up with my Toshiba A-30 HD DVD player. But for the price, appeareance, and overall quality...you cannot go wrong. ross glen ellen, ca

- As a Home Theater installer I have yet to see any TV with a better picture. Even without video calibration this TV was Stunning. The perfect match for Blu-Ray or HD-DVD.
There where no visible pixels and HD-ILA will not burn in or drop pixels. I cannot say enough about this TV. You really do get what you pay for.
- In early October, we ordered this set through Amazon from Beach Audio. When the set came with internal damage, Kris Freeman of Beach Audio took it all in stride. This FN97 model was out of stock, so he sent us the slightly more expensive FH97 model at no extra charge. The new set was delivered and the damaged one picked up at the same time.
The picure on this set is amazing. My husband was pleasantly surprised. We probably sit closer than most people do, about seven feet away, but with a football game, in HD, WOW. With an travel show of the Grand Canyon, when the helicopter banks, you feel like you have to lean with it.
The internal cooling fan is much quieter than some reviews led me to believe.
There is very little reflection from windows across the room bouncing light off the screen. We like the black thin frame surrounding the screen because of the lack of distraction while watching at night. You can even turn down (or off) the intensity of the blue power button light.
Right now, we have it hooked up with the 1080i component output from the SA 3250HD cable box. We have Knology cable. The HDMI input (this set has two) might be even better.
We have the set sitting on the Plateau CR-2V(64) stand that we also ordered through Amazon. This stand is within one-eighth an inch of the set's width of 64 and one-eighth inches. On carpet, with the spike feet, the stand is about eighteen inches high. The middle of the screen comes out to a little under 45 inches from the floor.
So far, we are very pleased.

- Fantastic picture quality, great natural looking colors and surprisingly good sound highlight this wonderful set. Purchased from Amazon 12/22 and we had it by year end, we are thrilled with the performance of this JVC.
A couple of things to watch out for. First, in an incredible display of corporate shortsightedness, JVC decided to cripple the firewire (1394) ports on this TV, mangling them so that they only accept JVC equipment. Pause to consider the magnitude of corporate stupidity here. An industry standard input port, IEEE1394, that they decide should be degraded so that only JVC works with it. So these ports are virtually useless to the average consumer who may just want to hook up, for instance, a Sony camcorder. Why did they stop with just this input. Why didn't they make is so that ALL the input ports only accept JVC equipment. JVC-only HDMI, JVC-only component video, and so on? Maybe because then nobody would buy it?
The other shortcoming is the menu system, which is atrocious, and cumbersome to navigate. Chief complaint here is the "input" selection, which forces the user to scroll through all the choices which takes about 20 seconds since the TV blanks and freezes for about 4 seconds with each change.
All in all, its a state-of-the art picture quality in a very attractive package with a small, tasteful bezel and stand. The sound, should you decide to use it (most owners of TV's like this have 5 channel surround, but occassionally you may find a reason to use the set's speakers) is very, very good.
I'd give this a perfect score, but the foolish waste of the firewire ports and the poorly done on-screen navigations (which, by the way, can be overcome with a smart remote such as Harmony) force me to knock it down bit. I give this one a 95 rating and a definite strong buy recommendation.
