  1. My boyfriend bought this TV the first year it came out--he paid almost $6,000 for it!!! It's now almost four years old. We've have the same green/yellow tinge with loads of blue throughout. Quoted over $1,000 for the repair. The local repair people didn't even have to come look at it to know what the diagnosis was. This product is a lemon and the manufacturer keeps rolling out the product year after year. The manufacturers are criminals. If I had the money and time, I'd sue them.

  2. I purchased the 44" version of this TV back in June 04. Within 6 months the dreaded blue line appeared at the bottom. An LG rep on another forum confirmed that excessive heat causes the plastic lens mounts to warp after awhile.(He has since deleted all his posts) I can't post a URL but do a search on E44W46LCD + TriodeGuy and you will find my posts on the other forum. There is a fix for the blue line problem that doesn't require light engine replacement. Please see my posts for details. There is also mention from another poster of a class action lawsuit in Jersey.

  3. 6 months ago my T.V. started to show the blue haze. At first, I thought it was the satelite signal. How does a $3000 t.v that is 2 years old have problems so quickly. My family grew up on Zeniths; 2 Zenith's in a 25 year span. So I started to do some research on the Internet and learned about the famous LG/Zenith blue haze. I knew the one year warranty had expired, but I thought I would call LG to get their opinion. As soon as I told the customer service rep the model of my T.V., I heard this pause (as she was expecting me to complain about the Blue Haze) which I did. Immediately she told me that I had to speak with someone else in another department. It seem like they established a new unit just for these type of phone calls. To my surprise, the rep told me that they would cover all parts and labor. A week later, I received a letter from LG explaining that they want to cover all expenses to repair my T.V. and there was language in the letter that stated a disclaimer that LG electronic is not at fault for the the problems that have occured. I signed the letter, sented it back to them and they had a video service in my area come pick up the t.v for repair. I should have the set back by next week.

  4. After calling LG/Zenith I got the 'we're not responsible but we'll fix your set for free' certified letter. The local repair company began installing the new light engine in my living room but found after complete disassembly that the new engine was not correct and would not work. He loaded up my set and took it to get another engine, he claims to be on the 4th light engine from LG since each one is either wrong for the set or won't work upon installation. I hope they take care of this no matter if the problem is their parts or their choice of repairman or I'll be the one starting the class action!

  5. After a few months of having the TV we noticed dark gray spots when it was a dark part. Luckily it was still under warrenty and Zenith came out and fixed it right away. Then just recently we got a blue spot in the bottom corner that grew across the bottom. We're still able to watch tv (for now) but not for long it sounds like. We got online and looked up the issue only to find out this is almost a guarenteed problem with this model of Zenith and cost more to fix than buying a new TV. We seem to be lucky having it last ALMOST 4 years, some people's didn't even last 2.

5 comments about Panasonic TH-42PWD8UK 42-Inch Plasma EDTV.
  1. I bought the TH-42PWD8UK after exhaustive research and dozens of showroom screenings. To be blunt, these Panasonics have (both the HDs and EDs), by far, the best picture you can have in your home and I'm delirously happy with it. There are a bunch of caveats and issues, though. The flat screen TV decision cuts across a mess of issues:

    1) Plasma versus LCD. LCDs look better in the average showroom because they have smaller pixels (finer grained picture) and brighter backlighting. Plasma's hidden strength is their rich blacks and more vivid colors. In real life you sit back 8 feet or so from the screen - so the pixel size issue disappears. The brightness issue disappears in real life too - where I, like most folks, do most of my viewing in evening or night hours in a partially lit room. Plasma's strengths in dense blacks and vivid colors equates to a greater image dynamics - more akin to film than regular television. Once you start to spot it, LCDs look a bit washed out by comparison. Plasma's vividness can be a dual edge sword. Sometimes flesh tones can look too pink. Panasonic gets this right - better than most other plasma screens. Rear projection and front projector units can't compete for vivid picture or image contrast (not to mention angle of view - the big drawback of rear projection BTW).

    2) HDTV versus EDTV. HD has higher resolution - but only HD broadcasts can take advantage of it. All the rest of the content you throw at it (DVDs, regular TV broadcasts) must be upsampled. (EDTVs have to upsample regular broadcasts too BTW). Resampling can introduce artifacts (blocky shapes). The quality of resampled images varies quite a bit among different manufacturers and is the reason why you shouldn't necessarily go cheap. EDTV is designed to have the same resolution as DVD - and DVDs look amazing on the 42PWD8UK. HDTVs can actually look inferior to EDTVs on DVDs and regular broadcasts because of the upsampling issue. HD content looks pretty darned good on the 42PWD8UK too - even though it must be downsampled. I spent a good long time looking at an HD demo on the HD and ED models of this monitor and found the difference surprising subtle. I haven't regretted the decision so far. Obviously the only major reason to go with HD is that you have HD channels on cable or satellite, and plan to go to blue-ray or HD DVD soon. If these moves are not immenent for you - then don't pay extra for HD. By the time HD fully penetrates, prices will have dropped a lot and it will be close to time for a new TV anyway.

    3) Consumer versus Commercial line. The 42PWD8UK is from Panasonic's commercial line. That's why it is sold without a stand, speakers, and without a tuner (and has such a low price). Stand or wall mount is your choice - but you must budget to buy one or the other. I found a Panasonic brand stand for $185 and it's great. Most folks have external cable or satellite boxes so the internal tuner you buy with the consumer line model is wasted money. The fact that HDMI interface is a cost added option is a non-issue with EDTV - since you will not benefit from the higher resolution of that interface. The 42PWD8UK comes with three inputs standard: BNC coax digital composite, Component Video (the three R-G-B cables), and computer SVGA. Trust me - Component Video is good enough. The inclusion of SVGA is awesome too - for those who have a computer in their home entertainment system. As for speakers - a big screen like this screams out for a good surround receiver and 5.1 (or 6.1 or 7.1) channel audio speakers. If you don't invest the extra $500-$1000 that a decent 5.1-7.1 audio setup will run you you are really cheating yourself. Immersive audio is hugely important in home theater and will really augment the great picture you'll get with the 42PWD8UK. Given that you own your own home theater audio setup - or will be derelict if you don't get one - the issue of the 42PWD8UK not including speakers is irrelevent.

    4) Panasonic versus the other guys. Short and sweet - there's no better picture at anywhere near the price. At the high end only Hitachi and Pioneer compete. Interesting offerings like HP end up just being rebranded Panasonics. Cheaper units like Philips (much as I normally like their stuff) look too pink on flesh tones and have inferior black detail. Don't get a cheaper HDTV just because it's HD! The resolution difference is negligible compared to overall image quality. Image quality is where the 42PWD8UK rules - and isn't that really the bottom line here?

  2. Great TV. Much more affordable that HDTV and it looks pretty much the same. So much so, I bought this TV twice and may buy two more. Make sure you decide if you're going to mount it on the wall or put it on a stand and buy these accessories at the same time that you are buying this tv. You may also need some adapters BNC to RCA etc. All in All...I great buy.

  3. This is a beautiful TV. I've had it for 6 months and I am very happy with it. For one, the minimalism of it. I just wanted a monitor. I didn't need a tuner since I have a HD cable box and I didn't need speakers since I have a great surround sound system. Also, I find it distracting that consumer versions of flat screens have all that stuff attached, as one reason people like flat screens are the aesthetics. I think the EDTV picture is excellent, and I feel comfortable I made the right decision to not jump on the HDTV bandwagon right now. I am constantly comparing my EDTV to friend's HDTVs and I think their picture is totally inferior, whether it's DVD or regular television or even an HD broadcast. It's a great buy and a great upgrade from a CRT. Very happy.

  4. This is an excellent plasma TV. I have it for little more than 6 months and I am happy that I bought this baby!

I did research for about 8 months before I bought Panasonic TH-42PWD8UK. First thing, look @ at consumer reports or any website for reviews on Plasmas - on top 10 list more than 50% will be from Panasonic. This company knows how to dig plasmas. Second part is you need to decide about your needs - what exactly you are looking for. In my case, I wanted a plasma that's slim & slick. I ddin't want any speakers associated with the plasma for two reasons - the OEM speakers are NEVER decent quality & I didn't want huge looking thing on my wall. This plasma is basically industrial/commercial display - no speakers, no stands. And that was perfect for me as I can just hang it on the wall (I had to buy seperate wall mount).

Another thing to keep in mind - this EDTV not HDTV. To be frank, I still can't understand the hype for HDTV. I don't have HDTV cable so for me it didn't matter. The quality I think equal to or better than HDTV (compared to HDTV plasmas what I had seen in retail stores).

This TV doesn't have any stand or mount so you need to buy something on day 1 - otherwise you won't be able to put it anywhere. I bought the mount from CostCo and happy with that.

For the connections - look @ the other review over here - there' all possible technical details on that one so I won't bore you with those.

In the end, I will say this is a great plasma with awesome picture quality. If you are buying plasma, get yourself decent home theatre system too. Your A/V receiver can handle all the connections to your cable box, DVD, VCR, CD player etc. And finally, get yourself one of the fancy Logitech/harmony universal remote too. I got harmony 880 and love it. Tip - Plasma on wall, nice slick speakers with high output and 1 universal remote to manage everything will impress anyone anytime - including yourself!

  5. I've been pretty happy with the performance of the TH-42PWD8UK. I've had it for over a year now. Picture quality from DVD using component cable is very good, and has been what I am using it mostly for. I never feel the need for HD. DVDs looks awesome, as this unit is the native resolution of DVDs. I won't be far off to say that none of the HD sets in the store looks better than this one.

But the reason I am writing this review is my surprise finding of how well it scales 1080i or 720p image when fed such signals. I recently got a Samsung HD tuner, and naturally I set the output to 480p, my TV's resolution. I also tried a Panasonic DVD recorder with HD-tuner, and the picture quality was about the same as the Samsung, very good.

However, while tweaking some settings on the Samsung, I changed the output setting on the back of the unit to 720p and 1080i. I was expecting the TV not to display anything, but much to my surprise, a proper image is displayed. Even to my bigger surprise, the picture looks noticeably sharper and more detailed!! How can that be? The set is not HD! I pondered this for a while and came to the conclusion that the TV must have a much better scaling algorithm than the Samsung tuner.

With HD tuner sending a 1080i signal, picture quality looks astounding! My friend was looking to buy a Panasonic 50" plasma, and came by to take a look at my TV. Both he and his wife were stunned by the picture quality and how it looks better than all the HD units they've seen. Anyway, I am extremely happy with the performance of the scaling algorithm on the TV. If you have HD source, set it to 1080i output and enjoy! You will not be disappointed.

One thing that still puzzles me a bit is why HD materials look sharper and more detailed than DVDs, and I am talking about good quality DVDs here. Since this set is the native resolution of DVD, theoretically it's as good as it will get. HD material should look the same as DVDs, since the end result of what you see, IS 480p.

I wonder if I get an upconverting DVDs, and send the unit a 1080i signal, whether it will look better than the standard DVD. In theory it shouldn't, since scaling 480p to 1080i and scale back would not gain you much, but does it? I guess when my current DVD player dies I'll get a new one and find out.

  1. Ok, I just purchased this TV and have spent the past hour and a half trying to remove the stand/pedestal. I searched the web to no avail until I saw a review posted on Amazon. So to help all those people with the same issue - you simply remove the 5 screws on the back of the tv closest to the pedestal (there are 6 parallel screws - don't remove the top middle screw - hope this makes sense.) The stand is connected to a metal plate that will slide out of the base of the TV and voila!

More later....once I get the TV hung and turned on!!!

  2. I hope to expand on the potential of this product at a later date, for now it has been GREAT. I have satellite and will expand on the setup to recieve the full potential as advertised by Toshiba.
Fast shipping, well packaged, and good tracking info.

  3. easy set-up. dvd's look great. there is a slight blurring with sports action if your 6 ft or less from tv. a limitation on lcd response time from what i've read. i'd still recommend it to anyone.

  4. I had a few doubts about purchasing this Television refurbished but it arrived in "like new" condition and within the stated time frame. Communication with the seller was superb and they let me know where my product was every step of the way. All in all I am very satisfied with my purchase and will definitely be buying from them again!

  5. Great picture and good value...some issues with a "light" spot on the screen that won't go away. Product support could be much better...buy it and hope there are no bugs...good luck. Great for watching sports!!!

  1. We purchased our Vizio 32" HD LCD TV with the extended 5 year warranty from Sears in August 2007. The TV works great and we've had NO complaints. The color and resolution is as good as the higher priced competition. The remote control is easy to navigate and use. It is our bedroom TV and gets used 7 days a week. For the price you cannot beat this product. The extended 5 year warranty gave us peace of mind and was very affordable. I'd recommend Vizio products based on this purchase and I'd consider their larger LCD HD TV's as well.

  2. I owned my Vizio for just over a year, then it died. It would cost more to get repaired than buy a new one. I contacted Vizio to see if they could help me in any way, but they were most unhelpful.
I was very impressed with the price of my Vizio when I bought it and by the picture quality. But beware most of the good reviews for Vizio on the internet are from people who have only had there TV for 2 or 3 months. Once they have had there TV for over a year they will realise why it was so cheap.

  3. For the price I was happy with the TV for a little over a year. After the warranty was up all of a sudden the High Definition turned green while the AV inputs worked normally. The problem is that you can't find a repair show to work on Vizio TV's. I called dozens of shops and only one said they could get parts to Vizio's but advised me to throw away the TV and buy another brand.

Vizio tech support was not helpful in directing me to a repair place so I finally gave up. Do yourself a favor and buy another brand.

  4. The T.V. was fine for the last two years, it is in the bedroom and doesn't see that much service. This morning I went to turn it on and nothing happened. The little amber light is on, so it looks like its getting some power. Checking the web I find this is a common problem with Vizio. So it looks like the main board is bad and it'll cost at least $150 for the part and hopefully it fixes the problem and I don't do any additional damage when I swap it out - lol. Some people were taking it to the shop and getting quotes of $400. I have never had a new T.V. go out this soon. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS PIECE OF GARBAGE !!!!!!

  5. My mother has had this TV for a little less than 2 years. A thoughtful neighbor bought it for her after my father died. Recently the picture contrast has gone all red and the TV is impossible to watch. TV repair technician said this TV is not reliable and they see problems with this brand all the time that are more expensive to fix than the TV is worth. A TV at any price should last a good long time. I will replace my mom's TV, but with any brand but Vizio. I will never buy a Vizio product at any price.

  1. I checked botht he Amazon product review and Toshiba website before buying and deduced, based on the size, that it was VESA 100 and bought a VESA 75/100 mount. There is nothing on either site that indicates which it is. Unfortunately, it is VESA 200 compliant only.

In addition, please be aware that the weight w/o the stand is 24.5 lbs. This was also not clear on either site. I had purchased the Sanus Systems VM2s w/o the 200 mm converison plate and now have to go back and buy it.

Aside from that, the TV arrived quickly and in good condition (shipped from Beach). I have not used the TV yet but assume, based on previous experience with Toshiba, it will be great. It is a very nice looking TV.

  2. Very good LCD Monitor/TV with superb sound but one flaw regretably, did I mention the sound is great. This product is a 2006 manufactured of the Toshiba "Custom Series" LCDs. Incorporates SRS WOW sound effects, stable sound & 1\2 mute, and most of all five apect ratio resizing modes to choose from with an auto aspect ratio selectable in it's menu. Can also connect to a PC VGA (standard 15 pin RGB connector) with working compatibility modes of 640x480, 800x600,1024x768 and 1280x1024 all at 60HZ refresh rate; ie. to say only of viewing the entirety of your desktop in these four modes. However will also display widescreen resolutions of 1360x768 (max resolution of this model) and a few other resolutions but PC settings from within the monitor's menu will become disabled (I wonder why Toshiba made the firmware like that ???). Don't let that be a flaw you have to stick with, powerstrip software takes good care of that.
Quality is outstanding, I had to add this paragragh because I didn't get the cable I ordered for the first time review. My computer is connected to the HDMI through an "Atlona High-quality Dvi to Hdmi Cable", I dropped the VGA connection. You must be technical somehow before hooking this up as to knowing in which DVI category your video card lies. The DVI pins on this cable look somewhat like this - ::: ::: (Digital) rather than the custom :-: ::: ::: (Analog+Digital). The pins that would normally fall in the middle like :-: :::::::: are for digital audio. So to say your video card DVI must be DVI-I or DVI-D, not DVI-A but the cable must be DVI-D. HDMI is Digital only, not compatible with analog (RGB). With this hookup 720p and 1080i is possible, my inexpensive recommendation to you who would need to change your video card is an EVGA FX5500 card or later model.

  3. I bought a Toshiba because the 26HLD56 was the top rated model for its size from Consumer Reports and Amazon was offering a very good price. The only difference between that and the "C" is the lack of a tuner. But if you're only going to watch cable and DVDs there's no need for a tuner, so save some money.

  4. TV has very good picture and sound. If you don't need the tuner, why pay for it. Yes, you can get a cheaper brand with a tuner for not much more money, but to buy a tv of this quality with a tuner is at least $400 more. I use it exclusively with a cable hook up, DVD, VCR. I say, if you're not going to need the tuner, why pay for it. I am Very Pleased.....

  5. Being the typical Engineer, I did a lot of research before purchasing any HDTV. Due to documented Quality issues with Sharp, Samsung, and Sony, I concentrated on Toshiba and a very few other brands.

Since I have Dish, I really didn't need a set with a built-in tuner, so the Toshiba monitor was the logical choice.

I was aware of Consumer Reports selection of the Tosiba HDTV as the best in class. Now that I have this monitor set up and running, all I can say is WOW!!! CR was right as were the previous reviewers here on Amazon and various AV forums.
