- Great experience and price buying this tv through Amazon. Picture is great, came just as promised brand spanking new. Would buy again.
- This tv has great picture quality, though not quite as good as some of the other top tier tvs in the same segment, the price more then makes up for that being a few hundred dollars cheaper. I have all three consoles hooked up and all look great. Blu-Ray on the PS3 looks great specially if you use HDMI. Also, until recievers have more HDMI hook ups, this tv has enough to hold you over with three. Unfortunately, non HD sources don't look quite a good. My Wii which is hooked up through component just looks blurry. This is obviously a problem due to this sets large size, all tvs of this size share this problem with blurred images of non HD sources. I have Direct TV HD and it looks great, however, be wary since lots of the "HD" channels aren't true HD yet, just less compression then before.
I did have a problem with the bulb going out after a few weeks, however, since I'm still within the first year of warranty, they replaced it within a week at no charge. Unfortunately, you do have to send back the broken bulb which is a nuissance, but it's a small price to pay.
- I can't write a glowing enough review for this tv. Yes, I have a few minor quibbles... Silk Screen Effect being the only one of significance (not that significant, really) but all in all, this is a fantastic set. Accepts a 1080p/24 input (reframes to 60, but does an impeccable job) means you can watch the new Hi-Def movie formats as they were meant to be seen. Standard definition tv when moved to the 4:3 format is tolerable.
I have mine hooked up to the HD-a35 toshiba HD-DVD player and I cannot tell you how many peoples jaws have dropped.
This tv, in all honesty, was a steal!
- Got it in Aug. 2007, wish I would have looked here first. I didn't use it much, mostly for games and movies, not much television-watching. Tried to turn it on last night, and the screen wouldn't turn on. Eventually got a pattern of led's on the front panel that indicated lamp not working (a yellow led with red flashing). There was also a voice that came from the television that said "Lamp not working" heh. I called Toshiba, and the guy had me hang up and take the lamp out, then call him back. He asked me if I could see any damage (I couldn't see any, but didn't know what I was looking for). He said that it was probably not the bulb, but the housing, and that I should take it to the nearest service dealer (40 miles away, ugh). Felt like I was getting the runaround. I'll just give my money to some other company in the future, and be sure to check here before I do :) . Lesson learned. It's a shame, because I liked the television when it worked.
- I purchased the TV from Tiger Direct through Amazon about a year and a half ago for $1200. I couldn't be more happy with it. I spent a lot of time walking through department stores (Best Buy and Circuit City) to find what kind of TV I wanted to buy, this TV always stuck out. For the screen size and price, you couldn't find a better buy. I was looking at Mitsubishi's 57" DLP first, but researched this TV with it and found that they're basically the same TV, but the Toshiba was $500 less.
The picture quality on the DLP rivals LCDs and Plasmas, hands down. I have a long living room so having a LCD or Plasma, I wouldn't really benefit from the really wide viewing angles. With DLPs, I don't ever have to worry about picture burn-in that the Plasma might experience. With LCDs, the closer you get to the picture, you can actually see the individual LCD "rectangles". You won't get that from DLP. The closer you get, all the round images actually stay round.
I have Toshiba's HD-A30 HD DVD player and the picture is immaculate. I have plans to buy a Blu-ray player also, but I'm waiting until black friday for the good deals. This TV has a built-in HD tuner so with a HD antenna, I get all the local TV channels in hi-def for free.

5 comments about Sony Bravia S-Series KDL-40S2010 40-Inch LCD HDTV.
- Excellent product. No complains. Strongly recommend.
Eagle shipping is also very good. They delivered the TV and took away all packaging boxes.
- TV: Since this TV replaced a Sony XBR with 1080i resolution, the picture quality we see is only slightly better. Also, I have not noticed the clouding problem that many other buyers of other S series models had problem with.
Good:
- very good HD pictures
- color & brightness when using HDMI input
- sound quality is much better, could be due to HDMI
Bad:
- the response (switching between inputs, volume change) is way too slow, even compared to a much cheaper brand LCD we have.
- there is no way to skip the coax cable input which we don't use.
- no picture in picture (I knew this before buying)
Delivery: very bad experience
The delivery was late and it cannot be considered "white glove" because all the delivery guys offered to do is to hook up the TV at the nearest outlet in my living room to prove that it was not dead. Secondly, it took over a week (half dozen email/calls) to get Amazon to agree to their policy (that because of the late delivery, return shipping should be paid by Amazon), which also meant that I could not refuse the shipment and ultimately hooked it up while getting this resolved. Oh yes, they offered a $15 coupon and are yet to respond to my final comments on this experience after four days.
- I live in a rural area, and could not get any store to deliver a television to me. Even delivery companies would not deliver a television in particular. Amazon came through with shining colors. The delivery was prompt - understand that the delivery company will CALL by telephone for an appointment. I waited for an email for longer than I had to prior to checking my phone messages, whereupon I found the Television waiting to be delivered. The service was very good, if not "white glove." The delivery man offered to help me take the television inside, which was nice - but he's certainly wasn't familiar with the television set, and so I didn't want him to hook it up.
The television arrived in in perfect shape, and performs spectacularly.
Why this set is special:
- Picture quality is superior coming from this television's image processing software.
- Exterior of the television is matte black, not reflective lacquer like Samsung and Sharp. That reflection is distracting from the picture.
Looking at this sony as well as a Sharp and Samsung that had better specs on paper (higher resolution), this television's picture quality was superior. The Sony has better image processing software/hardware built in so that it "cleans up" standard input signals AND cleans up compressed mpeg image quality (from less-than-perfect DVD's). That really made the difference in my purchasing decision. The numbers alone don't tell the whole story. When researching HD Televisions, be sure you check the type of input and ensure that the settings on the television are calibrated to that input. This is where Sony really excels.
Another commenter mentioned that standard DVD's looked better after purchasing an "upconverting" DVD player. This is very key. The one that I have found to be close to perfect is made by Oppo :
OPPO DV-970HD Up-Converting Universal DVD Player
The connection by HDMI is also key. A lovely signal transmitting through a mediocre line is wasted.
Still, as with any HD television, the connection between the two machines must be made carefully. When I changed the output of the DVD player from 480p (standard DVD) to 720p, the image quality improved RADICALLY. - Then I looked to ensure that "noise filtering" was off (default setting is "low" ) - and once turned off (no need to filter a gorgeous signal)... the picture is flawless - well as close to that as I need. The good news is that one can save settings for a particular input. So that once you set your settings for the DVD player, you aren't required to adjust them again. Though, DVD's vary and changing settings accordingly may do some good.
The control menus are easy to navigate, and after a few minutes of figuring, one will be very comfortable trying this setting or that.
Overall, the television and the delivery were both superlative.
I couldn't be happier.
- This was by far the BEST Picture on the Showroom Floor and got it for $1200 clearance at BestBuy! When I got home I thought that the Picture would suffer as I only have a Standard Antenna to pick up local Stations. However, I was amazed at the picture and brought in my Nieghbor whom works for verizon on the Fiber Optics line. he stated that there is no better image engine then what the Sony Bravia Creates.
-
Summary: BEST LCD TV for the Money! Hands Down.
- We love this TV. I bought a Sony rear projection 60" for my family room about 4 years ago and have never regretted it. So naturally when it came time to buy a big one for the bedroom, we upgraded in technology and stuck with Sony. When you're spending this much on a TV, pay a little more for the best. I research all my high ticket purchases so I expected the quality to be as good as it is. We don't have it hooked up to surround side or an HD box and you'd never know it. The picture is crystal clear. We've had the tv for about a year and no complaints yet. We feel like we're at the movies when we lay in bed.
It is also very light and thin. I am a 125 pound woman and I can lift it myself. Perfect if you have the wall space but don't want to take up too much room.

5 comments about Toshiba 42HP66 42-Inch Plasma HDTV.
- I am a tech consultant; nonetheless excuse me for this non-technical review. I must say I truly like this TV. The banding others have spoken about is certainly real, but only visible with certain content. Otherwise the display is excellent, especially for "older" technology (it's now July 2008 and the set is what? 2 years old?) The audio is very decent compared to some other TVs I have seen, though I usually play audio through my receiver. The remote control is no-nonsense and the entire device has given me no trouble whatsoever since I purchased it (more than a year ago). I don't know who actually makes the set (see comments in some of the other reviews), but it seems like a "Toshiba-quality" product. Oh yeah, there's no apparent burn-in whatsoever.
- After reading many reviews, we purchased this TV for $2400 on March 22, 2006. Yesterday, March 16, 2008, a loud popping noise and the TV goes black. We have sound, but no video. Toshiba says "sorry." Expert repair guy says probably will require major work and suggests we start looking at the new and improved and cheaper TVs out there now. It won't be a Toshiba.
- I bought this plasma for my b-day present to myself and it's never let me down. Although, I was in the market for a second plasma, I thought this was better for the bedroom.
- Be wary of the one year warrantee. My set failed at 13 months and Toshiba (so far) would not help. There are hot spots and color distortion in the clouds and basically any white areas on either regular TV, DVD or video games.
The tech support was worthless to the point of being annoying. I've done a web search and I'm not alone. However, as of yet there are no recalls.
- We heard a pop, lost the picture, then the sound, then the ability to turn it back on. Toshiba's closest authorized dealer is 70 miles away and, since the warranty had expired, gouged us nearly $700, half of which was labor, to replace a couple parts. The tv worked for about 45 minutes and now we get no picture or sound again. We've had other Toshiba's and believed them to be reliable. Now that I've had to experience virtually no technical support, I'd have to say I'll never buy another one.

5 comments about Toshiba 62HM84 62-Inch HDTV-Ready Projection DLP TV.
- I'd say the 3 star average for this tv is about right, it does have many redeeming qualities in the picture quality and size for the price, when I bought it. BUT my first bulb went out in about 9 months of pretty heavy use. The lamp setting was on high the entire time and thankfully it was still under the manufactures warranty and when i called for a new bulb one was sent within the week. I'm reading these review and writing my own now because my next bulb just went out. This time the setting was on low the entire time and the bulb did last twice as long, so I def recommend using the low setting which looks just fine, you can barely notice really. This one is thankfully covered on my extended warranty, plus they will come out and clean the mirrors etc. After reading the fine print on my best buy extended warranty it says it only covers one bulb replacement (found one for $170) and the warranty was $400. SO thinking back I would have rather just payed the $170 whenever the bulbs went out to $400 for the first one with the warranty...but i guess if anything else goes wrong it'll be covered too, but nothing has happened yet. Hope this review helps.
- Toshiba 52HM84 52-Inch HDTV-Ready Projection DLP TV We have gone through 4 bulbs in 3 years @ $246.24 each , new ballast was $322.66 and now we need a new Light Engine $842.13 for a grand total of $2,149.75. Are you kidding!! I have called Toshiba and all they say is I'm Sorry. Not under warranty. Garbage day is tomorrow that's where this TV is doing. DO NOT BUY ANY TOSHIBA PRODUCTS!!!!
- I have had this TV for 3 years and 6 months. I am replacing the bulb for the third time. Bulbs are over $200 dollars. This TV is not so great that it is worth a new bulb every year. I use the TV less that 2 hours a day. Do the math, that is less than 1000 hours per bulb. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! I repeat, DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!
- I got this TV refurbed and I am very happy with it. The picture quality is great. Everybody keeps complaining about the lamp, but most of them probably didn't read the manual. There are certain things that shorten the life of the lamp. They probably did all of those. Because I got it refurbed, I also got a lifetime warranty (which includes lamp replacements.) It's a good T.V., you just have to know how to treat it.
- I bought my toshiba 52 over three years ago and am still on the original lamp. We use it approx 5 hrs every day on low setting. I am going to buy a replacement bulb now just to have it on hand since my one year manufacturers and 2 year extended warranties have ended. Is it possible
all these people who are having to replace their lamps so often are switching from low to high setting alot causing the lamps to weaken? I don't know, but it seems odd that there would be such a difference in my tv and theirs. Someone also mentioned that they were having their mirrors polished or cleaned. It seemed like the sales person at best buy had told me that the mirrors were sealed in an air type environment and wouldn't need cleaning. Does anyone know about this?
