5 comments about Sony KDF-E50A10 50-Inch LCD Rear Projection Television.
- The first reviewer did a terrific job so I will only speak to what he left out. I agree with everything he said.
I paid $2500 dollars for this TV 18 months ago, and would say you are getting a steal on this TV for $1500.
I play XBOX 360 on this TV and the quality is really good. There is an occasional issue seeing pixels during odd lighting situations in the game (for instance a street light on Splinter Cell, the light to dark transition is not smooth) but this can be partially blamed on the game. The only real gaming issue I have with this TV is that the picture is to big to play really fast paced games. That's about like having to many shrimp on your shrimp Po Boy.
DVD's look fantastic, HD quality is perfect, and the picture with the regular DirecTV signal is the best I have seen with any HD TV this size. I even keep mine on the wide setting and people don't look to squatty.
Plenty of high quality inputs.
- After months of research, I bought this this TV in Oct 2005 and we got addicted within 2 days and wondered about how did we survive on our 27 inch:
- Great picture
- Good colors
- Good black
- Great HD experience when hooked with HD feed from cable (using HDMI)
- Sufficient number of other inputs to hook up my DVD player, VCR etc.
Life was beautiful until April 2007. After working flawlessly for 1.5 years, the TV suddenly started displaying multicolored vertical lines all across. I logged a service request with the brick and mortar store's service department right away and started researching and here is what I found:
- Lot of people have problems with these Sony TVs (KDF series, Grand Wega series et al) generally 8 months to 2 years of operation:
(a) Roadmap problem - the screen will have some roadmap image in some particular color
(b) Multi colored vertical lines
(c) others
- General consensus was that this is caused by the "optical engine unit" or "light engine unit" being faulty. This is supposedly an expensive piece of hardware and Sony is replacing this component till Oct 2007 on select models. I'd recommend that you research if you TV falls within this program.
- Folks very often waited months before their TVs were fixed or replaced or were still looking for resolutions (i.e. even when they had warranty).
- Folks got high dollar estimates to fix this issue
- Surprisingly, Sony has not issued a recall.
My recommendations:
1) Buy this TV ONLY IF you are buying warranty
2) If something happens to your TV, be prepared to wait for 2/3 months before it is fixed
3) If something should happen to your TV, be aggressive in following-up. I ended up calling the store manager and then customer service chief at corporate level before THEY agreed to replace my TV (of course it is a floor model and is not new)
4) If you are looking for TVs, go for 720p models which have 1080i up-convert capability. No need to go for 1080p (you'd probably have to pay for a "HD Tier" to get 1080p programming). This way you can get 50inch 720p plasma for upto $2500.
Disclaimer: The delays related to receiving warranty service are rather common to all retailers and you WILL be without TV for at least 4 - 8 weeks. Be prepared.
- We have had the t.v. for 20 months when these rectangular shaped, multicolored boxes apearred across the screen. They measured around 3/4 by 1/2 inch and have rapidly changing colors in them. I have been reading alot of posts and it looks like this is a very common problem occuring after 18-20 months of ownership. The cost to fix the problem is 800.00 for parts and 500 give or take for the tech. Until Sony resolves this issue I would avoid the T.V.
- I own a Sony KDFE50A10, LCD. TV. Its 3 years old and I am getting diagonal lines on the top 1/3 of my screen. I E mailed Sony and their technitions said there are many varibles and maybe it was ran a long time, sorry but maybe its at the end of its life. It did have a good picture untill this. I don't like the support because thay just don't care. DON'T BUY IT !
- This TV only has given me 30 months of loyal service. IN the past couple of weeks multicolored small square boxes have appeared in 4 lines across the center in standard resolutions and a multicolored line in HD resolutions.
Many problems have been reported on the Internet about this model line of TV, with a general nonchalance attitude on the issues from Sony.
I would avoid this TV until Sony offers free repairs -- which will not occur until the matter is heard in a court.

5 comments about Philips 42PFP5332D 42-Inch Plasma HDTV.
- I bought this TV on Amazon for $996 with free shipping at the end of November 2007. It arrived in about 8-10 days by freight in perfect shape. Assembly was easy. The menu system is simple. The picture is great. The sound is wonderful. You're not going to find a better 42" plasma TV for under $1,000.
The only drawback is a TV this big with an excellent picture like this makes standard TV look fairly crappy. However, the built in tuner recognize 10 HD channels as soon as I hooked up my roof antenna. They look great. I have DirecTV so now am considering I need to upgrade to HD service to get the higher picture quality. DVD's look wonderful on this TV. I heartily recommend this, if you haven't figured it out already.
- I bought this TV in Brandsmart USA 3 months ago for $799. I own an LG and a Samsung (both HDTV) and the picture of this TV it's very superior to the other two (really natural image). The menus are very easy to understand, and the sound is great. The quality of this TV is equal or even better to other TV's that cost you hundreds more. I really, really recommend this TV.
- Save yourself a headache and avoid this product and all Philips Plasma's. If you take your chances and buy a Philips plasma, you might as well buy the extended service contract as you will likely need it.
I purchased the Philips 42in Plasma TV a little over a year ago and it started showing a thin red line vertically in the middle of the screen at about month 11. It was still under warranty and called customer service.
The repair shop picked it up a few days later. This was in the beginning of December. It is now March and they have replaced several parts without fixing it.
Here is the current workflow.
1. Repair shop orders a part from Philips.
2. Philips reviews the order to decide whether or not to give permission to ship the part since it is under Warranty.
3. Philips reviews the order and eventually gives permission to send the part. (this seems to take 3 weeks each time)
4. The part arrives 7-10 days later.
Part doesn't fix the TV and it starts all over.
Customer service has no way to track the status because it is in a different system.
The repair shop has no way of tracking it because philips has to give them an Order number and this doesnt happen until they give permission to ship the part.
Anyhow, when you call customer service, their only function is to tap dance around until you get aggravated and bored and get off the phone. They may promise callbacks, but it never happens. I even got one of their supervisors to admit that they provide service, but not good service.
I have a friend with the comparable Samsung that he got at about the same time and it works fine. Also I have anotehr friend with the Sony and it works pretty well, but pricier.
I have never had a TV break in the less than a year, but this one did and a neighbor purchased one as well and it lasted only 15 months was too costly to fix.Picture actually wasnt bad. just poor quality.
- I am on my third 42 inch phillips ambilight. Thank God for the Best Buy service plan. Yes, that's right. 3 Phillips Tv's in 3 years. All get a red streak vertically right down themiddle of the picture. Never again. Want ambilight. Turn on a lamp.
- I love my 42" tv I purchased it from my local Sam's club at first I was against buying a plasma and until I got it home didn't even know I had bought one (smile) until we had the tv on the bed putting the stand together. I said hey this says plasma.... da* I thought we had goten an LCD so I called Sam's Club and ask to speak a sales associate and ask him do they have the LCD in Philips. he said no only in the plasma.. So I said well I'll keep it now. The only problem is, it gets hot when your near the tv or in the room (bedroom), but the picture quality is great.. plus I got a hell of a deal and warranty through Sam's Club tv was $899.00 warranty was maybe $100.00 or less but I got a 5yr warranty through Sam's and the 2yr through Philips.. What a deal (Smile)

5 comments about Sharp Aquos LC37D40U 37-Inch LCD HDTV with Integrated ATSC Tuner.
- Anyone considering a LCD should consider this model. There are newer versions by Sharp which are claimed to be higher resolution..but for a much higher price but, in my opinion this is an excellent unit and will more that meet expectations from a high res. flat screen TV
- I'm very happy with the equipment but not so much with the reception which is likely no fault of Sharp. The picture is distinctly less crisp than on my Sony tube set and I've brought in DirecTV who assure me it is not due to a weak signal.
- We bought this tv specifically for video games. We have an Xbox 360 and a PS3. The picture is pretty darn good. I think I made a good choice on this one. I recommend to anyone looking for a good tv for gaming.
- Have had this TV for 3 days and so far so good. HD picture looks great after adjusting the settings (settings out of the box are pretty bad - got settings recommendation from [...]). Very easy to set up. SD channels also look good - a lot better than some sets that I've seen.
Only complaint on this one is with Amazon - shipping time was misrepresented. I selected 1-3 day shipping and TigerDirect delivered in a week. Not a knock on the TV set though so not dinging my 5 star rating for this.
- This TV looks great with an HDTV signal like Discovery PLanet Earth, unreal!

3 comments about Olevia 342i 42-Inch LCD HD Ready Monitor.
- The review in Consumer Reports influenced our decision to buy an Olevia and we are very pleased with the monitor. We aren't TV watchers, but we do watch DVD's and the picture quality from this monitor is very good. It's clear and detailed. Also, the monitor is in a very bright room and the picture is not adversely affected by the brightness. And, the good price also made the buy very appealing!
- This LCD is packed with great features, fantastic picture quality and connects right to your cable box so you don't need a tuner anyway! It has an easy wheel menu for your settings, you can adjust the picture to the brightness of the room and it's a snap to connect your DVD player and HD and I can even hook my laptop to it for a huge monitor. I can't say enough good things about this product. Olevia is soon to be a force to be reckoned with in the electronics world if they keep coming up with products of this quality and value!
- for no reason we can identify the video aspect of this display just died and flickers back and forth between red/blue/green/white/black. It was not dropped, there was no power surge, and it was very carefully handled. Just took it off the base to wall mount it and now dead. Would not buy another one.

3 comments about Toshiba 62MX195 - Cinema HD - rear projection TV ( DLP ) - 62" - widescreen - 1080p (FullHD) - HDTV.
- Originally I was going to purchase the Sony KDS-R60XBR1, I stoped into a local retailer to look around and they had this TV next to the Sony. At first I thought the Toshiba did not have good contrast, but after messing with the contrast & Brightness we got them looking about the same.
To be honest I was worried about the fact that I am still using only Analog Cable (480i). I thought that the picture was going to be grainy... To my delight the picture for most channels is great, I sit approximately 12 feet from the TV, and to me I think its a Great picture, I can hardly wait to get a true Digital image better than 480i. I will warn you tho some channels are better than others, one of the local channels looks like it has a hint of snow...
My old Proscan (RCA) DVD player (circa 1999) casts a great picture through the component hookup, even though its only 480i, and again with a quality DVD like Finding Nemo (I bet you can tell I have kids) it has an awesome picture. My 2 year old son is just mesmorized by it... I leave the picture in native mode for the most part, where the sides are Black, If you stretch a 4x3 picture it becomes grainy... An enlarged picture is ok, but I like a little more head room...
The Remote control was a little awkward at first, and finding that button that I know is there somewhere sometimes gets lost. But after 3 days I am becoming familiar with it.
Apparently the TV I purchased was too large for someone elses living room, it is BIG, REAL BIG, so if you sit closer than 12 feet you might consider a smaller set. Also I had a heck of a time finding an entertainment center that had a TV stand which was 57" or wider. THe TV is approximately 37" x 57".
The picture is Bright, VERY bright, and with a 150W Bulb I put the bulb on low power and it was better for my room. There is a lot of light in my room too, so I was pleasantly surprised. Admittedly at night with the lights off, its still a little hard on the eyes, so a light in the corner is on to help with that.
THere is a known potential problem with original bulbs on certain serial numbers, Toshiba is aware of this and extends the Bulbs warrenty to 2 years if in the range.
In heindsight, I am glad I got this set over the Sony, not only did I save $1000, The Bottom speakers make it much narrower than the Sony (about 9 inches to be exact). The extra 2" larger display is a plus but its not like it matters much on a set of this size.
Overall its an excellent set...
- Wow.
I went looking for a TV looking for an obvious bargain. I could not have found a better TV. This TV originally being released late in 2005 can be had for a good deal. If you are buying a TV it's never a bad idea to buy models that are being sold making way for new models. This is a 1080p display TV so it's not like the new models are gonna be THAT much better. Atleast not $1000 better which is probably gonna be the difference in price.
I've been watching some HDTV (discovery and HDnet the 2 channels that broadcast the highest definition signal "1080p") and the quality I get rivals that of some of the dedicated "fancy" 1080p demos you see some of the most expensive models displaying. . Don't fall for that. Stores just do that so they can sell while the price is high. So they'll put a fancy dedicated demo on their newer $5000 and above models. Go for the bargain. At 62 inches and 1080p, this is one BANG for your BUCK tv!!
- I've had this TV for 14 months now, and the picture is still fantastic. I've never had a problem with this tv. No bulb replacements, nothing. regular cable or HD is fantastic. you can't go wrong with this model of the Toshiba.
