5 comments about Westinghouse W4207 42-Inch High Definition LCD Video Monitor.
- I picked up this monitor about 8 months ago, which has given me plenty of time to play with, and I have to say that for the price, you just can not go wrong with this monitor. Plenty of inputs (to one of the previous reviewers - there are 2 component inputs,) excellent picture quality, and fairly easy to adjust for best picture. 2 suggestions for previous reviewers and anyone who buys this monitor. For good black levels (and better picture in general) in a darkened room, get a light to place behind the monitor and illuminate the wall behind it - this helps your eye perceive the distance between the screen and the wall, making black and color look better and reducing eye strain. This should be done for all large screens in dark rooms, not just this one. Also, a previous reviewer said there was no digital audio on the HDMI - the HDMI cable carries audio (and very well, thank you) and most new home-theater boxes have an HDMI input and output so you can go from cable box to audio box, then from audio box to monitor. All in all, a great monitor.
- I bought this tv at best buy about a month ago for $800 it is on clearance. I went into the store planning on purchasing a panasonic 42 plasma and saw this model sitting on the shelf. I saved $400 picking this up. Looks awesome in my living room. excellent quality picture and sound. my friends love coming over to watch sports.
- I had no intention of buying an HD set until my trusty 32" Philips tube died on me at the beginning of the year. I didn't want to spend a lot, and this set was the best deal I could find.
I've had a 19" Westinghouse LCD monitor for my PC for almost 2 years and I've loved it, so I looked into what they had to offer for HDTVs/monitors. I compared this with big name brand plasmas and I have to say the picture on this set is better in some ways than most I've seen. While dark grays and blacks come through a little grainy (this is with the LCD technology, not this particular set) bright colors come through phenomenally. The first movie I played on it was SW Episode III, just to watch the intro space battle scene. I was blown away. The level of detail, the colors, the resolution, fast motion, everything was great.
I also wanted to see what my DVD options were. I didn't want to get Blue Ray b/c it's so expensive, and even with HD DVD, I'd have to replace my library with new discs which would cost a fortune. So I got a DVD upconverter. I think I spent 70.00 on the player and 20.00 on an HDMI cable (upconverting only works with HDMI.) It takes my boring old standard def DVDs and makes it look close enough to HD without really being able to tell the difference, making this set just that much better.
So for the price, for the array of inputs and for the great picture, this is a good purchase. If you want to spend a little more, there's a 1080p version of this set, though unless you're getting Blue Ray DVD, there's no rush to have 1080p. And if you want to spend a lot of money, go with DLP and steer clear of plasma.
Good job Westinghouse! You now have a loyal customer.
- Monitor worked well for the first 9 months I had it then a couple of power issues that were more annoying than anything. At about 15 months the screen went blank and no longer displayed anything, a few calls to Westinghouse and they determined after their "rock solid" 1 year warranty it becomes a giant paper weight. A couple authorized repiar shops won't even look at it as parts are hard to get from Westinghouse. I would never buy from Westinghouse again without an extended warranty!
- I've had one of these for almost 3 years. This unit has great color, The Hi Def picture is as good as anyone could imagine. The contrast ratio is it's weakest area,it's good-OK, but limited. Technically, the power supply board runs too hot (120 degrees). I have a air filter/purifier mounted behind it, this airflow fixes the problem, that other reviews have stated about short life span. With a good H.D. camcorder the playback picture is absolutely stunning.

5 comments about Toshiba MW20F52 20-Inch Flat TV with DVD and VCR.
- I started shopping on weekends again at my local and not so local electronics stores perusing the latest TVs and other electronic devices on the market. Toshiba's MW20F52 20" Flat CRT set with DVD and VCR is a very good value. The 24-inch screen is a perfect size to reproduce a pretty vivid and sharp looking picture. That was the first thing I noticed about this set. It took me a minute to realize that the picture source I was watching was from the built-in DVD player. VHS tapes also looked good on this set once I got a demo. The 4-head VHS component was in HiFi and sounded very good. I was really surprised by how well the picture looked. TOSHIBA still makes a good product as this demonstrates. The flat screen held the image pretty true around all the edges and the audio quality was above average delivering good fidelity for both low and high frequencies.
- Compared to a Sony, which no longer makes/advertises CRT VHS-DVD TV's, this TV is adequate but laking the Sony picture quality. A decent second choice. In my opinion, better than any other brands currently available. Price was good, I'm satisfied in what I could get.
- This TV with DVD and VCR is exactly what we hoped it would be. We didn't want anything too large, because our den is a relatively small room, but we wanted a good picture and a system that would be easy to set up and use, and we definitely needed the VCR as well as the DVD. It's a great combination, and everything works well. The manual explains the operations clearly, and the remote is excellent. We are very, very happy with this TV. We couldn't be happier, and we highly recommend it.
- My brother had a stroke 3 years ago, and he needed a tv he could operate w/o always having to reference an instruction manual or searching for various remotes. He likes having everthing right there at his fingertips. He is very happy with his new tv set. Shipping was very speedy and it was in perfect condition.
- First of all, this set replaced a sony with a smaler screen. It is used in a bedroom, and thoughtfully integrates the VCR and DVD into one easy to operate, albeit hefty unit. The picture is clear and renders colors well, just a tad less sharp than the sony, but close enough. The sound is very full, and with the front mounted speakers, very clear and can be placed inside a cabinet or shelf without muffling the sound. The tuner can render digital and analog signals, allowing this set to work without a converter box after the Feb. 2009 broadcast changeover to digital. This set was purchased for my 88 year old active mother, and she is very happy with it after more than a year of constant use. The remote is intuitive, except some buttons are small, and can be inadvertently pressed. (activating closed captioning for example) This television has been an ideal choice for a smaller combination unit, from one of the more reliable branda.

5 comments about Olevia 323V 23" LCD Monitor.
- I received the TV in Fine working condition and fast too! The only problem I have is that there is no co-axial port on the TV, so unless you have digital cable, a VCR or DVD player, or just want to use it as a nice computer monitor this is the TV for you. Great value. But you must have seen my face when I opened the box and I couldn't connect my direct cable to the TV. I'm sending it back today.
- This unit does not have a coaxial (RF) connection, so if you don't use a cable box (basic and basic+ service users will not have a box) you wont be using this TV.
- Don't buy a Syntax Olevia! I bought one and it died almost to the day the warranty went out. Customer service said I would have to pay to ship it back and pay the parts and labor to fix it and that would cost over half of the TV's cost. They wouldn't offer to help with anything and they said they lost my registration card, the same one they used to call me with to ask me how I liked it a week after I bought the TV. So all I can do is to post this to every blog I can to try to inform others.
- After less than a year my TV lost sound and picture. It should have still been under warranty, but Syntax (the manufacturer) was of absolutely no help. Don't let the price of this TV entice you like it did me. Pay a little more and get a TV that will last longer.
- I got my new Olevia flat panel last month and over all it is a good bang for the buck. The HD picture is excellent even on Comcast HD which is compressed. The sound is poor, however just like the others who wrote a review this is easy to fix just add external amplified speakers problem solved. One thing these sets are shipped in showroom mode. For those of you who just want to set up this set without reading the instructions here is a bit of advice. READ THE SETUP INSTRUCTIONS OR YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE THE FULL MENU. I would rate this set a solid 6 to 7 on a scale of 10. It is a good set for the bedroom or the dormroom.

5 comments about Toshiba 42HL196 42-Inch 1080p LCD TV.
- This has been a great TV. Very clear picture. The white glove setup was a real plus. Especially like that only a card is needed for HD rather than a settop box.
- This is a nice TV for the money, but mine died during the warranty period and it has been almost 2 months and still no repair. Multiple emails and phone calls to Toshiba tech support/customer service and the local authorized service provider has resulted in the major run-around and no fix. I still have no idea when the unit will be returned to me. Back ordered parts were received DOA and had to be sent back, tech people cannot figure out what is wrong with the TV, yet Toshiba refuses to do the right thing and replace the unit. I will never purchase another Toshiba product. And if you do and it needs service, be prepared to be without your product for a long time. Sorry, Toshiba, this just isn't good enough when people spend their hard-earned cash with you!
- Let me make this short. Beware when Toshiba says FULL 1080P, good chance it is not! Bought the tv and hooked up ps3 and no 1080P. Called up Toshiba and got some real bulls__t! Liars, and will never buy from them again!
- Hi, people.
I've just talked to toshiba center and they told me the TV actually does not accept the 1080p video input. They say it's "1080p" because it always shows 1920x1080 no matter what is the input signal, but it's an interpolation of it... they confirmed that the TV DOES NOT ACCEPT 1080P INPUT SIGNAL.
The TV is fine, but i'm VERY DISAPPOINTED with its description. This "1080p" name is a durty sales strategy. I was looking for a true 1080p television (that can truly accept a 1080p input) and i bought this one and now i would spend at least 400 bucks returning the TV and buying a new one... result: i'll keep this TV, but unsatisfied... i've been made a fool.
If you're gonna buy this product, be aware of this issue.
- I bought this TV last Spring and am very pleased with it.HD and regular DVDs look great running on a Toshiba A-2. I was kind of upset because I thought I was getting 1080p but not the case. That kinna pissed me off cause I saved up to get the VERY best I could afford and then find out 1080i is the limit on this baby. Still a killer picture tho.

5 comments about Toshiba 50HP66 50-Inch Plasma HDTV.
- I bought this 50" TV, a 42 " panasonic and a 50" vizio plasma TVs around the same time (2006 holiday season, all new from either bestbuy or circuitcity). I also have a sony 65" HDTV projection TV. I would not recommend anyone to buy this Toshiba. The unit works OK but have several disadvantages
a) change a channel takes five to seven seconds for the new channel program to show up - which is not tolerable when you want to just go through channels to see what's on. (my feeling is that the technology/chip used is way to old than that in the competing models).
b) digital channel and analog channels are not separated and it is impossible to to use "previous channel" function to go between digital channels.
c) the picture quality (color and pixels) is the worst among all of the models mentioned above, espeacilly for the night sceans (for example, sony will show very smooth pictures of a DVD movie while the toshiba shows a lot of wavering small pixels when you get a little closer to the screen - say five feet).
I actually had bestbuy exchange for a new unit as I first thought these issues might be related to the unit I had.
I keep this new 50" plamsa in basement and only occasionally watch it (may be once in a month) so it is not a big deal for me. But I am surprise to see those good reviews from cnet/amazon. I'd recommend people to stay away from this model.

- I purchased this TV in Sept. '06. On April 8th, 2007 while watching the last holes of the Masters, I heard a loud whine and then POOF, the TV was off. Then it tried to start itself over and over again. TV was gone. I called customer service next morning(9th). They referred me to a repair company that didn't get to my house until the 13th. He could not fix it. He had to order a part.several weeks went by and no one was giving me an answer other than, " the part is on backorder". Well needless to say, yesterday (29 may 07) 51 days after my TV went down, Toshiba called and said that I can continue to hold on the backorder or get my money back. I choose the money, but, it will take 4 to 6 weeks to get it. They said they will send someone in 5 to 7 Business days to pick the unit up! 5 to 7 days to get thier broke tv but 4 to 6 wks for the consumer who spent good money in the first place to get his money back. Way to go Toshiba. I will never buy a Toshiba product again. Horrible and I mean horrible customer service.
The Tv was not all that either. My friends 50" Panasonic is far superior.
- I have now owned this TV for over a year and still get amazed at the picture quality with Digital HD Programming. When a TV can get my wife to say WOW, it's pretty good. I originally purchased a Samsung 42" DLP HD TV and the second week of owning it the sound went out. I took the TV back, purchased this 50" Toshiba 720P Plasma, and love it. If I had anything negative to say about it is the startup time. Takes about 30 seconds to startup but the TV goes through its checks every time. I really don't mind the few second wait. The only thing that made this TV that much sweeter is that I got it on sale for $1600.00 at Best Buy when they were $2600.00 everywhere else. Shop Around and I recommend the extended service policy simply for the peace of mind due to the amount that you are already spending . What's another $300.00? Hope this helps.
Josh
- I have owned this tv for a year and two months and when watching it heard a loud pop and tv went off. Took it for service and they said the scaler board is bad and they want $485 for repairing it. Did not buy the extended waranty so I am out of luck. Also recommend a good surge supressor because it seeems that is what caused the problem.
- We bought this TV about 3 years ago from Sears. The pic was fabulous and we were fairly happy with it even though we thought the price was excessive. Last year (just after the warranty expired) we had to have a tube (?) replaced to the tune of almost $500. We really debated over spending the money or buying a new TV. Since we had such a significant investment, we decided to repair it. Imagine our chagrin when the same thing happened again this year. So needless to say, we bought a Vizio last night and hope that we have much better luck with it.
