- Samsung HLT6187S 61" Slim LED Engine 1080p DLP HDTV
everyone from the pizza delivery person to the mailman and now my new best friend my neighbor who never said one word to me in 6 months .walks in house see's the samsung dlp picture and there knees go weak!they are drawn like a moth to a bright light.they lose there hearing and have only tunnel vision as they murmer wow is that one of them new tv's?as a little drool comes out the side of there mouth.but really i did so much research on this and other 1080p tv's it could have been my theasis.the picture a 10...the sound a 10 value for the dollar a 15! thank you samsung for making it possible to get a quality product and not have spend 5k.you will end up spending 5k when you see this tv in your home .because now the sound system isn't good enough and the dvd has to be replaced with a blu-ray player.but thats ok because now i can honestly say i own a home theatre thanks to samsung!
- Where do I start? I bought this TV in late July, and immediately had problems when it arrived early August. When watching 1080p movies on my HD-DVD player and PS3, certain scenes would have screen defects. A white strobing would superimpose over the image, almost as if a flashbulb went off every second or so. This is not the common "snow flake" shimmering that you will see often, with hi-def sources. I also have a new Sharp LCD HDTV, that doesn't have the problem.
Samsung responded by sending out a tech to fix the problem, 4 times over a 3 month period. After the third visit, the TV no longer turned on at all. In other words, the tech made it worse. I requested a refund or exchange, and they denied it repeatedly, until finally agreeing to exchange it after their 4th failed attempt to fix it, in late October! Mind you, I had a non-functional TV for 3 months now! With 3 young children and my wife at home, no TV in the family room has been extremely frustrating. It took them 2 weeks to get the paperwork processed to approve the exchange, only to tell me it was on back order, and I would have to wait until December to get my TV! Remember that my old TV broke in mid-July, and I ordered this TV in late July, 5 months before I would get an exchange TV. Enough!!! Only after initiating a dispute with Mastercard, Amazon, and threatening legal action did Samsung finally agree to a refund. But, I won't receive the refund for approximately 4 weeks!!!!! Fine, I just bought a Toshiba from Crutchfield (30 day return policy, no questions asked). Amazon's partner retailers typically only offer a 30 day EXCHANGE on TVs, but only after the MANUFACTURER agrees. Well, Samsung wouldn't agree to an exchange, so I won't ever buy a TV from that partner retailer or Samsung again. I can't wait for Samsung to pick up this pile of junk.
And by the way, if you think that I just got a defective TV, let me tell you that all TVs of this model have this strobing defect. I took my HD-DVD player to a local TV store, and they let me test it on 5 TVs. Guess what? Both the Samsung LCD and HLT6189S in their showroom had the strobing defect. I finally played with all of the adjustments that the Samsung tech supposedly did, and found that the flickering only goes away in "movie" picture mode. It is Samsung's image processing algorithms that cause the strobing - very dissappointing that they would release a product clearly not ready for the market. All Samsung TVs are suspect.
So, save yourself the risk of insanity, run away! Do not buy this TV!!!
- This DLP HDTV has better picture and more user options than any on the market. After the initial setup screen and channel search it displayed the first HD channel and it's a good thing that I was sitting down, I could not take my eyes off of it. Crystal clear display! There were three of us in the room and we all said, WOW! The big pluses of this TV are:
1. Never have to replace any bulbs ($300.00/bulb) it's all LED.
2. No color wheel to cause any rainbow effect.
3. The latest HDMI 1.3 interface, supports the highest resolution.
4. Bluetooth enabled to support various devices.
- For those of you looking forward to using the audio optical output to connect to your receiver, beware that the 87 series will only output HDMI audio to the standard audio jacks. You would need to look at the 89 series to optical out with HDMI.
- While color, geometry, contrast, and user flexibility excel on this set there are but 2 areas that it does not. Rainbows are still there to people who see them. Generally, people who wear eyeglasses. Wearing bifocals is worse. I fall into the latter catagory but they don't bug me. Secondly, this set falls short of producing inky blacks in scenes which have a lot of dark in them. The blacks don't "crush" per se but have a haze over them. In high contrast scenes the blacks look perfect. Would I buy it again? In a heartbeat. And I watch a lot of dark sci-fi. I don't think that DLP technology can be beat for the best skin tones, reproducing movement [remember, the speed here is in microseconds, not milliseconds like Lcd], ease of moving the tv, and the LED engine is icing on the cake. Bright, quiet, fast turn-on times, and cheap on power. No tv is perfect, but I love mine.

- I was looking for a small digital TV to use in the bedroom with an indoor antenna, and purchased 14" CRT model at Walmart that just did not cut the mustard. I returned it for the 19" Sanyo LCD model.
Installation was fast and easy. Take it out of the box, plug it in, attach antenna, power on, and the set detects the type of antenna connection and off it goes scanning for TV stations without further ado.
It even comes with a manual.
The remote is uncluttered and simple to use. I was comfortable with it very quickly.
The digital pictures are crisp clear and a pleasure to watch. The analog pictures were not that good, but that depends on your antenna and location. I used a table top powered antenna from Radio Shack that works fine.
I gave the TV a four star rating because I have not had it long enough to give a full evaluation. I wrote this simply because there were no other evaluations, and I want to provide at least some feed back for those that are considering this product.

- This is an excellent hdtv. While flat screen tv sets are really cool, when it comes to performace, the crt is king. With crt based tv sets you get much better black levels than any lcd,or plasma set. When it comes to viewing angles lcd,are just not as good as a crt.Now this set takes up alot of real estate,if perfomance maters more than share size, this is the tv for you.I am using the sony 27hs420,the sony 34hsn420 and the 32hs420 in a third room.My favorite is the 27hs420,now discontinued. The last two tv sets were top rated in a major consumer magazine. The 32hs420 is easy to set up.It has a very good remote, and the picture gourgious...I Highly recommend and own this tv...Please make sure the retailer has a good refund/exchange policy of at least 30 days...I thank you Stewart L.
- This TV produces a picture just as good as if not better then much higher priced TV's. The only downside is its very big and heavy.
- My picture tube broke after 2 years. When I have checked with the mechanic he said there are lot of people who owned the TV had the same problem. Repair cost is between $300 to $400. It's not even worth spending this much money. Don't buy if you are considering the weight at least 3 people needed to carry this 200 lbs. But the picture quality was good.
- Bought this HD-Ready TV 2 years ago. Excellent picture for regular cable TV. DVD movies on this TV are awesome. Sound is good, but could be better. In my opinion CRT TVs show better pictures quality for high def then LCDs or plasma. Some day that will change, I am sure, but for now CRT HD-Ready is excellent, and affordable, if you can find one it stores now days!!.
- We purchased the Sony brand because of its reputation for quality and picture. The picture is great, however, the quality is not. We've started having troubles with the T.V. and our repairman gave us a quote of > $400 to replace two circuit boards. We're disappointed and won't be paying extra for the Sony "name" anymore.

- Let this set be a warning to any gamer out there: You WILL experience response lag in games with this set. I knew something was off the moment I started playing Xbox 360 games via a HDMI hookup. I quickly set up the old HDTV this one was supposed to replace and sure enough, there is a difference between them.
Don't get me wrong though, if you're a movie buff, the image will astound you. The colors are really good, although I did find the orange to be slightly dull. Good set, just not good for gaming. Therefore, I ended up returning it.
- Received this product a little over a week ago, very happy with picture, sound and operation. Seller shipped promptly. I would do business with them again. I did have to be home to accept delivery, which might have been an inconvenience for some people.
- So I've had this unit for a few months now and I think I have a pretty good grasp of its capabilities and quality.
First- Set-up was a breeze, the manual, though sparse was pretty detailed in the picture. It was easy to follow the directions from the diagrams or just figure it out on your own.
Secong- Picture quality is amazing, black is truly black on this unit. the contrast and and the sharpness is great. I attached an HDDVD unit to it and it looks great.
Third- After a few days of using the built-in speakers at mid volume levels the sound quality starts dropping off. I opted to using my home external sound systems to save the speakers, besides it sounds better that way.
- I ordered this TV based solely on the reviews posted here and other websites. What a great TV!! The picture is crystal clear, even when I just plugged the cable into the wall while waiting for my DirecTV to be installed for HD.
The HD channels are even better than on my 37" plasma in the basement. I put this TV in my living room, which gets a lot of sunlight in the late afternoon. Absolutely minimal sun glare off the screen and the picture wasn't degraged at all!
- I love this set. I found it at a local pawn shop, perfect condition, and obviously got an excellent deal. I've used a couple of other HD sets, and this one's by far my favorite.
First and foremost: Gaming. I see another review on here was bashing the gaming on this set, but the PS3 run through HDMI at 720p looks beautiful. I've played CoD4, Battlfield: Bad Company, MGS4, Motorstorm, GTA4, and Warhawk on this set, all intense action oriented games. No blurring, no artifacts, looks realll good. The only thing that looks slightly bad is the edges on everything are a little pixellated, but it did this on the other sets as well (an $800 Sharp and $900 Sony of the same size). I'm not really sure what set he hooked it up to that looked better, but I'd like to know.
Second, SD cable. Like a lot of people, I haven't made the switch to HD programming yet. But SD channels look as good as you can expect. The Zoom1 ratio is really nice, doesn't look stretched at all, but it cuts things off sometimes (it's really only noticeable when there are words on screen - credits, titles, logos, etc.) Stuff I really don't care about seeing anyway. I'm not a fan of having big black bars on the side of my screen, so I really like this ratio. Image quality seems to vary a lot between channels, but it never looks bad.
Third, as a monitor. I was, in fact, so impressed when I hooked my laptop up through VGA that I've decided to build an HTPC to use with the LG as a monitor. Granted, I'm going to use a video card with DVI/HDMI output with a DVI to HDMI cable so I can pass HDMI sound to my receiver, but anyway. It looked good. I'm probably going to buy a long VGA Cable so I can hook up the laptop to the monitor and use it in a Dual Monitor set-up, as well. The max resolution supported on the tv is 1366 x 768, which is perfect for me, but I bet PC gamers will be wanting a much higher resolution... It's definitely not for playing Crysis at max settings. Still, it's not gonna look bad, either.
There are an absolute load of inputs, 3 HDMI, 2 Component, VGA, etc. I don't think you'll ever find yourself not being able to connect something you want to. There's also a Digital Out for audio.
The Remote can't program my Sony Receiver... irritating. I'm trying to find a universal remote that will let me switch inputs on the LG and control the volume of my receiver. There are 8 or 10 codes for Sony Audio, but none of them work. My receiver is a STR-K790, by the way.
(I can't comment on the speaker quality of the TV, since I haven't used it at all.)
All in all, it's a definitely a great set, and arguably the best budget HDTV around. The only issue at all I have with it is black-levels, but really it's minor. (see the 24 and 165 in the top left corner here? http://research.stowers-institute.org/efg/R/Color/Chart/ColorsChart2.jpg
The 165 is the black level on my set, with the gloss frame as the 24. You CAN get it darker, by adjusting the backlight level and such... I'm not much of a videophile so I'm not worried about it. For a casual user, you're only gonna notice it in pitch black scenes where people have the lights off, and the little black bars on the side. I just suggest using Zoom1.)

- I too had problems with this TV. It would never play any of my DVD's even new ones. After about 3 months, the picture just suddenly died. I can still get sound but no picture. I would never buy another Magnavox.
- Purchase the newest model "/37" and you'll find vast improvements over previous model. Best quality/components by far for price range for this combo style. Shop around for pricing as this model is being agressively marketed by some "big" retailers this Christmas season.
- I purchased this Magnavox TV/DVD 6 months ago and am pleased with the picture and sound quality. I'm using a roof top antenna and pickup several HD channels and many more digital channels. It's great...except the screen size. It's not 16:9 as HD TV is broadcast, but 16:10. The picture is stretched to 10" high instead of the 9" it should be, so everyone is tall and thin. Magnavox should offer a software upgrade to correct this problem or offer replacement TVs. I would not have bought this TV if I was aware of this design problem.
- This LCD TV looks like a good deal price wise, but the model I bought (not from Amazon, but the same model) had a lot of defects, and after ~100 days, past the brief 90-day warranty it had broke. TV started to turn on and off randomly for no apparent reason while getting interrupted by the (basic) built-in DVD player. It could not hold a signal to the TV. It may cut off TV signal to black or the audio would mute, pop, or it could also reset randomly. And it blasted a high-frequency tone each time at maximum when it cut off the picture, and then continues the loop over and over (the volume blasting will make you jump in your seat). The TV's ATSC/Qam tuner must of broke, and after a week of tolerating its problems, of turning on and off and blasting, it was thrown out.
- These and almost every brand of 19" HDTV use the same LCD panels made for computer monitors. Wide screen Computers monitors are 16:10 and the number of computer monitors far far exceed the number of Televisions by the hundreds of millions. If a TV makers tried to get a company to make a 16:9 panel the cost would make the TV too expensive and you would not buy it...
So you will just have to live with it, no matter which brand you buy.

5 comments about Sharp Aquos LC46D82U 46-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV.
- I purchased this set after my 5 year old 42" Sony Wega Plasma unexpectedly bit the dust. That set cost me $8,000 back in early 2003. Needless to say, I was not very happy. However, my remorse quickly turned to excitement as I began to research new TV's (it's a guy thing).
The first thing that I had to do was to get caught up on the LCD vs. Plasma technology battle as much has changed these last few years. I read about everything from pixel speed to energy consumption to lighting conditions, etc. etc. No doubt you are doing similar research and reading the same things. While there are many important considerations, what mattered most to me in my decision was picture quality.
To tell you the truth, I've never been a big fan of LCD sets. I've seen many at different places, such as friends' and relatives' houses over the years and I have never been very impressed. To me the pictures just looked "grainy" and "cold" like a computer monitor. While the price of my Sony plasma would drop by thousands each year causing me some amount of buyer's remorse (the price of early adoption, I guess) I was still always very proud of my Sony's picture and had never seen anyone with a better looking set.
I was very disappointed to find out that Sony had abandoned plasma technology all together and even their top end XBR series seemed to exhibit the qualities that I always hated about LCD pictures. I'm somewhat of a Sony snob, so this meant that I was going to look elsewhere if I wanted a nice plasma picture. I quickly learned from my research that Pioneer and Panasonic have some of the best plasma sets currently.
During my research I had also learned that Sharp apparently makes the best LCD set. I didn't pay much attention as I was focused on plasmas. However, a friend handed me an HHGregg flyer that had an unbelievable price on the Sharp Aquos D64 series. Sure enough, the price was unbelievable as the store was out company wide. They did, however, have this model the D82 for $500 more (classic bait and switch). As I headed for the front door, the salesman told me he would see what he could do. There aren't too many stores that haggle anymore, but HHGregg is one of them.
A few minutes later I had purchased D82 for the advertised price of the D64 and had a Sharp Blu-ray player thrown in as well (all for $1850). A pretty fair piece of negotiating I thought, but what had I done? What about my research? What about the fact that I hated LCD sets and really wanted a plasma set? I had not read a single review on the Sharp Aquos LC46D82U and now I owned one!
Fortunately, this set has the most beautiful picture that I have ever seen. I've owned a Playstation3 for 9 months and had not been that impressed with Blu-ray, but wow, what a difference the 1080p with HDMI makes! The games on the PS3 look especially good, much better than on my old plasma set. The cable box in 720p with its component hookup looks great too. None of the "grainy-ness" I've seen on other LCD sets. There is very little blurring because the pixels are fast due to the 120 hz refresh rate, the colors are awesome to look at, and the set looks good in any lighting condition. It even automatically adjusts the brightness (the back light) automatically.
This set is twice as thick as the D64 series, but it's got a beautiful piano black finish that matches my PS3 nicely, and its materials make it look higher end than the D64. 3 HDMI inputs seem right. No PC input, but an inexpensive HDMI-DVI adapter takes care of that in a hurry. The Sharp remote is a bit cheap looking, but my cable remote controls everything except the wide/zoom options, so I hardly never see it. The sound on my Sony Wega Plasma was impeccable and this set doesn't even come close. However, I quickly learned that this is the case with pretty much all sets now, so I'm not docking the Sharp any points here. For example, no sets other than the Pioneer Elite Series even seem to come with an output for a powered subwoofer. I guess the industry wants us to buy a separate surround sound package.
Overall, I'm thrilled with this set and would highly recommend it. Even though I did not purchase it through Amazon I see that they have a good price on it (sans Blu-ray player) and would not hesitate to save the taxes next time out. Oh, the Sharp Blu-ray player they gave me with my set? I'm giving it to my father for his birthday next week.
- We are really pleased with our purchase. The picture quality is the best anyone could ever hope for. This HDTV was shipped out on 12/30/2007 and delivered to our home on 01/04/2008, considering the New Year's Day holiday. This was actually 7 days before the original estimated delivery date!! Absolutely no problems. Set up was fast and easy. We would highly recommend this product!
- I don't know where to start, so I guess I'll go back a couple months. Back in November I had purchased a 1080P 47" Westinghouse from BestBuy, the TV featured blacks which looked like grays, 30 second warm-up period and finally locked up after less than two weeks. I returned it for a full refund and began researching other brands/models. After all of my research it came down to three choices: Sharp Aquos, Sony Bravia XBR and Samsung. In the end I went with Sharp, the CNET review sold me.
So I finally ordered my Sharp Aquos early January, I've never bought from Amazon before and with the exception of my mattress and box spring I've never ordered something this large online before. I have to admit I was somewhat afraid of which could lie in store for me. But all of my worries turned out to be just worries.
I received my LCD TV in less than a week of ordering it and fell in love with it. Blacks look like blacks and the contrast level floors me. Mass Effect for xbox360 is absolutely breath taking. For games like Burnout Paradise you actually get drawn into the game because the color is so vivid and the refresh rate appears almost instantaneously. High definition content looks spectacular too, watching Transformers on HDDVD was almost as good as it was on the big screen.
The only gripe I have with it is that I think that it uses a 6-bot color profile and not an 8-bit color profile. Maybe I'm being too picky, just about everything I've thrown at it has looked flawless. Overall it's a great LCD TV for anyone looking to upgrade or buy their first LCD panel.
Also, I wish all of the LCD TV manufactures would have continued to support the DVI-D interface longer. Most people will just do what I did and use a HDMI-to-DVI-D cable to power my MCE system, but HDMI-DVI cables do not support dual link DVI, so there is less bandwidth in the cable. If companies like Nvidia would release HDMI port equipped cards I wouldn't even mention it, but the only products offering HDMI ports on them are motherboard manufactures using onboard graphics...yuck
One final note, Amazon has made me a firm believer in them after this purchase. With-in 30 days they lowered the price on this TV, so I followed the steps in order to be refunded the price difference. I was on the phone for less than 5 minutes and they green lighted my refund difference. I still can't believe it, it was so simple and hassle free. Kudos, Kudos.
- Compares with top of the line SONY and SAMSUNG. All the bells and whistles but at hundreds of dollars less.
- I originally owned a 42d62u that developed problems and sharp replaced it with a refurbed 42d64u that came with problems. They replaced that set with a new 46d82u that i received today. It is an 803xxxx serial. I could not be happier having owned sharps with problems i was not expecting to be this pleased with the set. The picture is amazing and looks great with both cable hd and bluray. Sharp went above and beyond what i would expect a company to do when dealing with a warranty claim. My 62u was 2 months over the warranty when they agreed to replace it, which is why they sent me a refurbished 64u and not a new one. When that set had issues they upgraded me to this new 46d82u. Great set that handles everything i've tested with no motion blur, no banding and an overall amazing picture. Do not let sharp's lcd issues scare you away from their lcd's. They have the best customer service i have ever experienced, they stand behind their products, and will make every effort to make the customer satisfied if they have a set with a problem.

4 comments about LG 22LG30 22-Inch 720p LCD HDTV.
- I'm confused, this tv is listed as having 16:9 aspect ratio on amazon, onecall where it came from and lg website. recieved tv yesterday and set up with comcast box and hdmi cable. set tv at 16:9 and it has black strips at top and bottom of pic. measured screen and did the math. tv actually has 16:10 aspect so i am sending it back as i can't watch hd tv with distorted figures." do all 22" 1680 by 1050 panels have this issue? also poor sound
- Easy to setup and easy to watch, the 22LG30 is an excellent buy for the price.
After purchasing this unit and receiving it, I had it wall-mounted and setup in almost no time.
The color and picture requires some tweaking (I had it set to 'warm', from the default 'cool' setting and also increased brightness a bit) and the audio as others have commented is weaker than what you'd hope to get (I improved the audio by increasing treble and bass to 100%, and setting the sound option to 'music' from the default). One thing I could not adjust as well was the black, which was not quite as black as I would like but better than what I expected (from an entry-level priced LCD TV).
Overall, I am quite happy with this purchase!
- Good picture, compact size (the frame is narrow so takes less space), has PC input that works fine, menus pretty nicely done, but has serious lip synching problems, doesn't fit picture to screen all that well (and yes it is 16:10 so images are slightly tall). Sound has weak frequency range and does sound tinny, however I used headphone jack to feed stereo audio output to my receiver and that feed sounds fine. As I write this, I'm thinking there has to be better model out there...sharp and Toshiba 22 inch displays were not yet available when I purchased this one, only other option was a Vizio, which I tried, but dark backgrounds had lots of noise.
- Overall, this TV is excellent for what I want of it. I'm not sure what others had in mind when they purchase it, but for my needs, this TV is absolutely perfect doing double-duty as my computer monitor and small bedroom television. It's actually 22", widescreen, and high-definition, with brilliant color, nice design, compact size, hidden speakers (which, somewhat reduces audio quality, but adds to visual appeal), and at least one hook-up for any kind of device you need. As a monitor, it takes my computer to a whole new level, and as a HD television for my Xbox (using a VGA cable), the images are overwhelming at times. For the price, this TV is an excellent purchase, and a great compact television.
However, the one I bought had a single burned out pixel (which I was too lazy to take back and replace with another TV; not that noticeable unless you're watching something that's really dark and are sitting a foot away from the screen); plus, the TV has no tilt or turn ability. Instead, it just comes with a simple, small, rigid stand that locks into the bottom of the TV (however, once again, for my purposes, this really doesn't impact me too much). Also, audio quality is not great when using the TV's speakers, but since I mostly use the TV as a monitor, that once again is not a big deal. The only other thing I'm not thrilled about is the widescreen images seem to not be exactly widescreen; they seem a little short actually, causing circles to appear more as vertically stretched ovals, even when the TV and appropriate devices have been set to display in widescreen. However, the distortion is very slight, and only noticeable if you pay attention.
Overall, for the price, this is a great desktop or small bedroom TV. At 22", being high-definition, a television, and sylish, with all hook-ups on the back, this will be more than worth the value as a computer monitor and TV, especially for those on a budget.
