  1. Finally it's my turn to add my two cents in about this TV. I'm not sure what I can say that hasn't already been said so I'll basically echo all the kudos that others have given this set. First off the set is sleek and good looking even when off. A lot of people have mentioned the glare issue. If you place this set in a room with a lot of direct sunlight or surround it with lamps and ambient light I could see how it could be a factor but in a room with that much light any set would have a problem.

Now on to performance. The picture is clear, crisp, vibrant and all the other brochure type adjectives included. The most impressive thing about this set is its black levels, they are AMAZING. Whether in the daytime or night nighttime scenes in movies look great. Colors are very vibrant. Watching the Planet Earth series Blu Ray on my PS3 I sat in amazement. I won't even mention how ridiculously good Ratatouille looked on Blu Ray. This set was an upgrade from my 42" Panasonic EDTV and I couldn't be happier. Regular cable looks good, DVD's look great and of course the ultimate is Blu Ray movies. Sound is above average when watching regular TV but of course the home theater comes on when it's movie or game time. Playing games on this set is awesome and not a hint of any burn in or motion blur.

Panasonic has outdone themselves with this line. This is definitely top tier quality for second or even third tier price. The only competition this set honestly has is a Pioneer. But even Cnet.com stated that the difference in black levels between this line and a Pioneer had to be measured with equipment to be noticed. To me that's not worth an extra grand or more. So if you're on the fence about this set don't think about it anymore. Click "Buy" or head to your local retailer, get it home then invite all your friends over and try not to rip your shirt while you poke your chest out.

P.S. Like I stated in my review of the Yamaha RX-V663 receiver I paired with this set, you do not need $100 Monster Cables. I have 3 HDMI cables total and the most expensive one was about $20. I get a full 1080p signal and full PCM recognition from my PS3.

  2. Overall,I really like this TV. Great HD picture and seems to be a quality built product.
Cons for me would be the base and frame are a high gloss plastic that is impossible to keep clean, and the set-up could be a little more user friendly.

  3. Have owned this product for about 2 months. Great product! Blue-ray movies look fantastic! Standard definition picture looks OK. The speaker can be a little bit better. It is not bad, but just a normal speaker for TV. For this price, they probably should give us a better speaker... Overall, very happy so far.

  4. Before deciding on the Panasonic 50" I did a lot of research checking out web site reviews, consumer reports, and going to some box chains to take a look at the picture quality for myself. I knew I wanted the 50" and once I narrowed it down to Panasonic, it came down to 2 models: the PZ80 and PZ85. Reading the Amazon feature chart entitled "Which is the right Viera for You" that lists all the essential characteristics of all Panasonic Plasma models, I decided on the PZ85. I then read the reviews from people who had purchased the Amazon PZ85 model where 31 out of 32 reviews were completely satisfied. I visited the local TV chain and when I saw that Amazon's price for the PZ85 was several hundred less; that was all I needed to make my decision. After having the set for a month now, I can say that I have not been disappointed in the least. I am very happy about the fast delivery, great picture quality, ease of set up, and EXTREMELY pleased with the price. I had never purchased anything of this value on a web site before this purchase, but I can tell you that it has been one of my "best buys" of the year! Thanks Amazon, for staying ahead of the competition, and thanks to Panasonic for another great hdtv product!!

  5. I have had the TH-50PZ85U for several days at this writing. I purchased it based on seeing a live unit, and because of favorable reviews here and on the AudioVisual forum. It is connected to an Onkyo TX-SR606 receiver which also came from Amazon, all with HDMI cables. I have a new Sony DVP-NS77H DVD player, and the upconversion thru the system is outstanding. I see no need for BlueRay until it gets much less expensive. I previously had a Toshiba rear projection HD that only lasted 6 years, so this is my first experience with Plasma. I am completely satisfied. The 50PZ85U does put out some heat, but I had read about this. Setup was okay, I am fairly technical, but I had to read the documentation carefully several times. The forums mention a 100 hr "breakin" time, but I see no mention of this in the Owners Manual. I am treating it carefully in any event. The picture settings published in the forum were right on the mark for my eye, although the out of the box picture wasn't too bad. I purchased thru Amazon even though others were slightly lower priced, and sure nuff, Amazon has already credited me for a nifty price decrease. The White Glove delivery was excellent, delivered much quicker than shipping email estimated. I highly recommend this Panny, and the same for the Onkyo.

  1. When I needed to upgrade the TV in our kitchen, it had to fit in a cabinet-end box that had been designed for a 20" CRT Sony 10 years ago. I soon learned that few HDTV mfgrs are building HDTVs that are 22 - 23". After a lot of web research and viewing and measuring LCD and plasma TVs in retailers, we agreed that the 22-inch Samsung was the best for us. While it's widely available in many retail outlets and sites, Amazon's price was the best. It was delivered in just a few days and the set has a beautiful picture and "fits" our needs perfectly.

  2. Needed new tv for kitchen. This set fit the bill perfectly. Good picture. Good remote. Highly recommended.

  3. This is a fantastic TV. Great picture. Very bright. It needs a tilt stand, however. Additionally, the screen is just slightly shy of a true 16:9 size, so you have to use the "wide" setting to fill the screen. The 16:9 setting results in thin black bars on the top and bottom.

  4. I absolutely love the Samsung LCD TV's. We started with a 40", then purchased another 40" for the another bedroom. The 22" went in the motorhome bedroom and the other went in the kitchen. Just purchased another 30 inch for the family/pool room. Would have gone larger but it was all that would fit in the cabinet. We also are using a 19" as a monitor for our computer.

All have bright, clear pictures, enough hook ups for all the gadgets. We have been using them for almost eight months with no problems. High Definition looks fantastic on these TVs, do not purchase for regular analog, it is not worth the cost as you will be disappointed with the picture quality.

  1. I just bought this as my first HDTV and I must say I am throughly impressed. It is a joy to watch, is easy to setup, and has the most lifelike picture. It looks great with SDTV as well, but really pops with a Bluray player. I highly recommend this TV.

  2. I guess it's okay. Pictures don't seem to fit the screen very well. I think this whole flat screen phenomenon may be a lot of hype and illusion.

  3. The Panasonic Viera was everything I hoped it would be. It worked as soon as we connected it; the HD picture is brilliant, the color accurate (better in plasma than anything I've seen in LCD). My regular DVD's and even my DVD-R's transferred from my own videotapes look great.

  4. I went to HH Gregg and they quoted a much higher price than Amazon offered, sales tax of 9.5 percent on top of it, with an expensive warranty, here in Tennessee. They even did an "internet search" for me in the store. When I told them I could do better, the sales tactic was to tell me that these sites that were cheaper were "shady".

I got the TV for my mother in law, and it was delivered in pristine condition to her house. Overall, cheaper than local vendors. It works great! I would skip Amazon's warranty, unless you can't feasibly replace it (and then you probably shouldn't buy it if that's the case, but that's another story). The warranty doesn't cover a major failure of plasma TVs in general, and from what I hear the service is terrible. They take your money easily, but everything else is a headache.

But, I have never bought a TV before on the internet, so I was nervous, but it all worked out well in the end. I'm satisfied with it. The colors/brightness are brilliant, looks great. Works great. Would highly recommend.

  5. I've been following this 42 inch Panasonic model through its growth and changes for six years waiting to finish college so I could give tv undivided attention. This is the most exciting piece of electronics I have ever purchased, or ever owned. I put up full-length black, black-out curtains which cut out any glaring from direct sunlight during the day, and provide a theatre atmosphere. The high def channels (Time-Warner) are so life-like and 3-D in appearance, I sometimes forget I am not actually in the scene, wherever it is.

The sound is certainly adequate on its own, if one is not an audiophile, but I wanted the Sony home theatre over the Panasonic and was worried they wouldn't be compatible. Much to my delight, the cable DVR and Sony Home Theatre are all controlled by the Panasonic Viera by just simply selecting the HDMI input source (there are three here) and naming the components I wanted to use. There is no hunting for numbers or holding and aiming remotes for a half-hour to find each component setting, as Panasonic Viera does that for you INSTANTLY, even if it is another brand. Push the Panasonic remote power button and the home theatre and DVR are started, vice versa when turning off.

I have also connected, by HDMI, a new Playstation 3 (thanks again Amazon) through the game port, and it is UNBELIEVABLE PICTURE QUALITY. Panasonic recognized them immediately and the menus on this tv are one push button drop down and simple to navigate. Likewise, the new Wii Console (from Amazon) is into another input using their video cables and the picture is crisp, clear and stunning. I chose the pre-selected game mode picture quality for the Wii, and custom picture settings for the cable and PS3. As I switch between them, the Panasonic remembers my screen settings for each so I don't have to "switch" back and forth manually as I change programming.

I'm sure I don't know half the things the TV does yet (purchased May 27th), but you cannot go wrong with this tv. I am sitting about twelve feet away in an apartment and it is just the perfect size screen. Next, is connecting my laptop to the PC input and "flying" Microsoft X flight simulator. That is going to be exciting!!!!!

The delivery took a while about two weeks, but the white glove service was excellent (actually two men who used to work for years delivering Sears tv's) and they were extremely knowledgable, helpful, and professional. If you want state of the art technology, with picture quality that passes for art every time, you want this particular plasma!!!!!!! By the way, I am a 58 year old single, female, and yes, while I am pretty technically literate and experienced, you don't have to be with this TV. Just plug and play!!!!

  1. I recently purchased this Sony model for my sun room as my third and final high def set. Not only am I very satisfied with the picture and quality that Sony builds into their tvs, the set arrived before the actual date of delivery and was very easy to set up with my Direct TV system. Sony has a reputation for building quality products and this tv model is no exception. Color and texture of picture is stunning, bright and vivid. My only issues and they are minor relates to the fifteen second delay (blank screen) I get when I first turn on the set. The other issue (again a minor one) is the sound is average at best but acceptable.

Overall, I am very pleased with this purchase and would recommend it to anyone who is considering 32" HDTV for a reasonable price. 720 vs. 1080, I do not see any discernible difference in the picture comparisons between the two.Hence, my suggestion is to go with the 720 with the much lower pricetag.

  2. This is an absolutely fantastic HDTV for the price and quality. Once I used an HDTV calibration bluray everything looked fantastic through my PS3. The set does look great out of the box but I would highly recommend everyone fine tune any set to get the most enjoyment out of it. This is a great set for gamers especially, although I would recommend it to anybody who is in the market. The price is unbeatable for a brand new HDTV with Sony Quality. The sound is decent but my surround sound arrived a few days after.

  3. great picture quality, stylish look, runs 1080p through hdmi(tested with PS3), has a good number of connectors, energy star approved, great bang for the buck. Highly recommend it.

  4. Compared Sony and Vizio and went with Sony for just $70 more.

The picture quality is amazing and at 32" there is no discernable difference between 720p and 1080p. The setup is a breeze and the QAM tuner can get some extra digital channels from cable at no extra charge.

Not much pixelation during action and the backlight feature makes viewing a pleasure.

    AK

  5. The initial setup went well, but the number of digital stations that I received initially was disappointing. However my roof antenna leads to two different splitters and it services 3 different sets located in 3 different rooms. I expected that the signal to the Sony would be on the weak side.

My solution to the problem was to purchase and install a powered indoor antenna amplifier rated at 25 db. The signal boost was terrific and I am very satisfied with the number of digital TV stations that this set picks up. I know that I shall probably not watch many of them.

The remote controls only this set, but it is easy to use and it does the job.

Overall I am very satisfied with the quality of the images that the Sony receives and I believe it was worth the $699 that I paid for it.

  1. Beautiful HD TV, it has excellent resolution, so quiet and I was surprised to find out the sound aint that disapointing either (in case you ran out of money to buy a Home theather haha!) Im sure paired with a good Home theather, its like I am at the movies! I really recommend this TV.

  2. This is a remarkable TV for the money, with a great picure and resolution up to 1080p (P for progressive scan -- 1080 lines of resolution with no interlace), and also support for 24 frames-per-second movie playback with Blu-ray high definition DVDs.

Setting up is straightfoward -- you set up the stand where you want it, lift the TV onto it, and tighten 4 screws. It can also be wall mounted. On the back are the large range of inputs: three HDMI, two component, one S-Video, two standard video (RCA jacks) and one VGA port. You can guarantee that whatever you have, you'll be able to connect it to this TV.

The best quality of output and convenience comes from HDMI connections (order some low cost HDMI cables from Amazon; my local stores wanted $50-$179!) A Blu-ray DVD player connected to the TV via HDMI delivers outstanding picture quality at 1080p, with amazing detail. It's so good, in fact, that I found myself noticing film grain more often -- you can practically count the grains!

This TV supports 24 frames-per-second ("24p" in the jargon), which matches the screen refresh rate to that used in movies. The visible difference shows up in shots where the camera pans (moves parallel to the scene). With regular TV playback, panning makes the scene blurry and you can't see much detail because extra "interpolated" frames are inserted to match the TV frame rate. Panning shots in "Casino Royale" blu-ray DVD were clear at 24p, revealing some visual jokes I missed before (e.g. the Richard Branson cameo at airport security). For movies like The Bourne Ultimatum with lots of camera movement, 24p makes the whole movie clearer.

Screen contrast of the TV is also very good. Blacks appear black, color is not overdone (though there is a "vivid" setting if you want to boost saturation). Lower resolution sources at 480i look pretty good -- they are upscaled nicely by the TV. Connecting a Wii with the standard video cables worked fine and produced a good picture.

For HDTV sources, this TV does excellent noise reduction and yet still delivers crisp detail and good color. This is where other LCD TVs fall down, and Sony really has done a great job with the Bravia engine.

Sound from the internal speakers is very good indeed, with dialogue particularly clear. Home theater speakers are better, but then that's true for any TV.

I am very happy with my purchase -- the TV has a stellar set of features at a great price versus more expensive versions with more bells and whistles... which I don't need. It is not the cheapest LCD TV in the 40" size, but the picture quality and number of source inputs sets it apart.

  3. This TV show HD picture wonderfully, for its price among its peers. It is a good choice. It is good for the game also. Perfect, and the sound effect .... A+

  4. This is our first "big flat screen monster" and, while we are "Sony People" we were put off by their prices until these new models came out. The picture looks great, 1080 in particular of course. I have not noticed any of the not-quite-black issues others have talked about. The contrast is fine for me. I like the "piano black" much better than Sony's fancy glass models, and it costs less as well. If there is one and only one issue with the whole thing it is that the documentation seems skimpy; it's all about connecting the cables and not much technical detail about the TV. I already know how to hook it up... But if you're looking at a 40 inch this is a nice one.

  5. Bought this at WalMart for two reasons, picture quality and inputs. Picture quality was outstanding considering it side-by-side with everything else they had at the store. That wasn't enough for me. I wanted connectivity options. This "TV" has 3 HDMI inputs (not 2 as the description says). One of the HDMI inputs is on the side of the TV so you can plug in anything you want, any time. It also has 2 VGA ports - one on the side. If that's not enough, there are two HD component inputs and optical and RCA audio outputs. But wait, there's an S-Video input too. Did I mention it also has an HD15 video monitor (from your PC) input? How about a 3.5mm audio input? WOWIE! Oops, it's got a coax input as well so you can use it as a regular old TV.

Pitcure's great, blah, blah, blah... but did I mention the connectors? This TV doubles as an admirable PC monitor at full 1080P (assuming your video card supports it). Was able to play FPS games at full resolution. Wow again.

Cons: Well, there are some. The first one is the minimalist remote control. Everything is menu driven, it seems, and it wasn't intuitive for me. I'd like more of it to be in shorter menus you can access from the remote. How about a universal remote? I have a Sony DVPCX995V 400-Disc DVD Mega Changer/Player that does HDMI 1080i upconverting (outstaning btw), a Sony home theater sound system as well. I have to have THREE different remotes for three Sony products. Arg. Then I have a satelite controller too.

The other beef I have is the highly limited PIP. It's got that many inputs, but you can only use one at a time. The only PIP functionality is when you're in PC mode with the HD15 input. Of course, if you're using the HDMI for PC input it's gone. This function is highly limited being a small box you can't change positions of. It's also poorly described in the instructions.

  1. I purchased this TV 2 weeks ago. Shipping was great (arrived early) and everything works and looks great. The TV has a great picture and you definitely get a great price from Amazon. Setup was easy and the THX picture setting looks great. I couldn't be happier with the TV.

  2. I was one of the folks who jumped on the "pre-order" sale back in early spring, before Panny was actually shipping product. I had narrowly missed the amazing Panasonic Plasma/Blu-Ray deal a few weeks earlier, so I was determined not to miss out. As soon as I saw the price I jumped.

First things first: as many others have reported it was not until late May before Amazon received units from Panasonic. Nonethless, I am happy to report that after "confirming" my order and agreeing to the slight delay, I was surprised in early June with a shipping notice. My unit arrived within a week - well ahead of estimated schedule.

The delivery itself was fantastic. A very pleasant young lady called me one evening to schedule delivery. I picked the day I wanted and she told me it would arrive between 10 and 2. They called me about 30 minutes out and arrived right in the middle of their delivery window at about noon. After a quick check for damage I was assembling the pedestal stand. I can't recommend the delivery and service enough.

Oh yeah - the TV! What can I say, the Panny delivers the goods and far exceeds expectations. You know the specs, so I won't bother repeating them here. I do want to mention how nice it is to look on the back and see 3 HDMI ports (the 4th is up front). It also has a digital out for sound, which is both convenient and necessary IMO. My one disappointment is with the built in speakers. Not enough oomph for me, but I may just be spoiled by my own surround setup.

I have seen this very unit in the store and I was blown away when I hooked it up to DirecTV and began sampling. I have at this point seen all the HD channels that D*TV provides and the only way I can describe it is breathtaking. Literally. I found myself watching some of the programming with my mouth wide open. The colors are amazing. I was slightly concerned that even a latest generation plasma would lack the punch that I had seen from some of the nicer LCDs in stores. No need to worry - the improvements in this year's model will blow you away. I was lucky enough to watch the Stanley Cup (game 7), the NBA Finals, and The U.S. Open all in HD, and I can attest to the superb quality for live sports. Movies and other programming will never be the same after watching them on this TV. I caught a repeat of SNL the other night and it was almost creepy how crisp and realistic the picture was.

The unit itself is gorgeous. I might have to get a new house to match my TV. :-) I started with a pedestal and have since moved on to wall mounting. Both were a breeze, although the unit is heavy enough to require two people to lift.

SD programming is good, although I have developed a very strong bias for HD content, so I find myself watching a lot less of that. I also hooked up my 480p DVD player and I am pleasantly surprised with the performance. I can't wait to get my hands on a Blu-Ray to see what 1080P and 24p playback will look like.

I have to get back to my TV now...

  3. I could not be happier with my TV and the total buying experience from Amazon. It is rare when I get a chance to say, "Everything worked perfectly"! The TV arrived 3 days earlier than the original delivery date. I received a call from CEVA to schedule the delivery for the next day and they showed up right on time. The picture and colors on the TV are fantastic and the sound is great when run through a surround system

  4. Panasonic Viera TH-50PZ800U 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV
    June 28, 2008
    Owned for 45 days

    PICTURE QUALITY

I can not say anything negative about the picture quality... it's a ten for today's technology.

    SOUND

I dealt with a Panasonic rep when I made a deal on the 800U and he indicated that the sound was superior to the PH-50PX60U I already had... yeah, it's a tad better but not by much. My 14 year old Sony KV-27HFR tuber still blows them away in sound. But I guess most people don't use their flat panel TV for sound like I do... this ones in the bedroom and I don't have an audio system hooked up to it.

    BEAUTY

The cabinet is nice... much nicer than I expected. It's got that sheet of glass front rather than several inches of bezel protruding around the glass that most flat panel TVs have nowadays. There is maybe a 1/4 inch low-profile black bezel around the glass front... very new looking. There is still a 3-inch bezel surrounding the picture tube (if that's what they still call them) - but it's underneath the sheet of glass front so when the TV is off it looks much nicer than that standard bezel look.

    ANTI-GLARE SCREEN

The anti-glare screen is better than my PH-50PX60U... but not much. Don't expect it to be much of an improvement. One thing I did notice is that from the side, you don't as much depth in the double images... not much to comment on but it is another improvement. Cleaning the screen can and is hard to do. I used regular Windex after testing a small area. Using a soft micro-fiber cloth, it took a lot of reapplying Windex to get the finger smudges off the screen. Our hands left a lot of finger prints from hanging the TV. If you don't get the fingerprints completely cleaned off - then they leave an iridescent sheen on the screen that quite visible. This kinda reminds me of the anti-glare coatings on camera lenses.

    MPG VIEWER

The TH-50PZ800U has a decent MPG viewer... it's not great but it's a step better because it "can" fill the screen now. Pictures don't get shrunk - they just display as-is. I've started cropping mine with ACDSEE or Photoshop at 1920x1080 so they fit perfectly. This year is a big improvement over the older viewer SW they had before. Controls via the remote are minimal... seems like you can start, stop and move forward & backward... and set the slide show delay in seconds.

The picture viewer on my old PH-50PX60U sucked. Even though I would feed it a 2272x1704 picture - it would shrink it down to about 1/2 the size of the screen... grrr. Guess back then they didn't have any good SW engineers working at Panasonic.

    TV ERGONOMICS

About as nice as you can get for a plasma today. Black rounded back that doesn't look bad when seen from the side. The front panel that folds down so you can access the SD memory slot is ok... but again, I give Panasonic a ding in the design - why did you not recess the SD slot a bit more so I could close the door when the SD memory card is inserted but not pushed in? Why oh why Panasonic guy??? This means that I can not store my SD card with my reformatted pics "in" the TV's SD slot... unless of course I leave the door cover open. Oh well. And why don't they give us a little slot under the door that holds a dozen or so of the SD cards... I've got 10 or so now and would like to use the smaller ones to organize my pics... and keep them in the TV. Oh well.

    WHAT'S BEHIND DOOR NUMBER 1

The front panel swings up to expose some external connectors and the important TV controls - just in case the dog carries the remote away.

    Menu TV OK/Video v-Vol-^ v-Channel-^
    1-S-video connector
    1-Video L-Sound-R (RCA PLUGS)
    1-HDMI connector
    1-SD memory card slot

    SERVICE & MY DOG EARS

Don't know if it's just me or what - but after the TVs been on a while, I begin hearing a high pitched noise coming from the TV. Kind of like a low pitch noise you hear from a transformer outside - but at the high frequency end. Mute the sound and it's less but still there. Turn up the sound and it louder. In fact, this is why I have the 800U... the noise from the old 60U was driving me crazy. But I must say that the local Panasonic customer service rep was great and he replaced the TV for me near the end of the 1 year warranty. I just paid a couple of hundred dollars and upgraded to 1080p. Again - Panasonic service was top notch! But if you haven't seen inside a 50 plasma yet, let me tell you - there's a whole lot of 2-inch high voltage capacitors in there... enough to make some serious high pitched electronic hum for sure. Don't let this sway you from a decision on this - no one else hears it but me... hence the dog ears.

    CONNECTIONS

It's got everything I want... just check the published specs. The only thing I would recommend they change next time is to angle the connectors on the back down a bit so things like the HDMI plug don't stick out so far. This would allow the tilting wall mount to tilt down a bit more - right now it's resting the connectors against the wall. Not a big deal just a suggestion for Panasonic next year.

    REMOTE

The remote mostly sucks in the normal remote ways, ie, the ergonomics, functions and button positions are poorly laid out. And where the frig did the sleep timer button go - it existed on my PH-50PX60U remote. So guess what - I'm using my old remote for the new TV... just for the sleep timer function... that's the only reason I pick it up. For everything else I use my FIOS TV Motorola QIP6416-1 DVR remote... but like most all remotes - it does not have a sleep button either - grrr.

    FINAL CONCLUSION

    Overall TV satisfaction... a 10.
Suggestion for next years model - get some decent ergonomics engineers on staff and build the worlds first award winning remote :)

  5. Very happy customer. Briefly here are my comments:

    PROS:
    A) Good Price on Amazon
    B) Great quality set
    C) THX is great quality
    D) Very usable set. Controls and menus very well laid out
    E) Remote control is best thought out i ever used
    F) Sound is very good on this set too
    G) Image viewer is good.
    H) On screen sound change only lasts 1 second. Just right amount of time of a visual cue.
    I) Surround bezel is very classy
    J) Set doesn't get too hot (it has fans - but mine never kicks in yet)
    K) Colors are very good. Blu Ray is amazing
    L) Amazon shipped to me in Carolinas in 4 days. Setup was ok. Set was perfect.

    Cons:
    A) Light reflection of glass is very strong. Set is great in dark room, but does pick up reflections very easy. You'll find yourself moving lamps around and keeping shades down more that you used to.
    B) Most expensive TV i ever bought. But it maybe 3 times bigger that i ever bought before (i love it)

  1. I was very apprehensive about purchasing such a expensive product online and having it shipped to me, but the price compared to what the local stores want got me to go ahead and try. The tv was delivered a week earlier than had been expected and was brought into the home, open, unpacked, placed where I wanted it and throughly inspected for defects or damage. The tv itself is awesome, the pic and color outstanding, not even hooked up to HD. The only thing we don't like is the noise it makes when turning it on and off. Other than that I am extremely happy with the delivery and the tv itself.

  2. I was undecided between the A750 and its sibling the A650 until I had a chance to see both TV sets in person. While picture quality for both sets is astounding (LCD technology has come a long way), what made the difference was the appearance of the sets. For me, the A750 price premium was easily made up by the fact that this set is much more physically attractive than the A650. The Touch of Red looks very good on the A750 and gives it an extremely modern and stylish appearance that I preferred to the softer, rounded A650 bezel style. I know this sounds pretty trivial, but if you're going to buy a premium TV that is the centerpiece of a room, in my mind it's important to buy a set that looks as good turned off as it does turned on. Now back to TV watching!

  3. I was always reluctant to order something like a TV online but the price for this Samsung 40" A750 without sales tax and free delivery was too hard to pass up. I ordered this HD on 6/3 and on 6/10 they delivered, brought into my house, set up and made sure everything was working. I was blown away at the speed and the service. Then I started watching HD channels on Comcast and I was equally impressed. I have made no adjustments, no revisions to settings, nada. It is the most impressive picture I have seen outside a theatre. My wife was so impressed she made me order an HD for the bedroom. The sound is excellent and when coupled with my stereo speakers is great. The one annoying factor is the sound it makes when powering up and down. I am sure there is a switch to shut it off but I am too busy to read the manual to find the adjustment, since I am watching the most wonderful video on the HD channels and movies. Discovery HD brings the animals and scenery to real life.

Bottom line - this is an exception product. Amazon knows how to deliver.

  4. The TV is excellent but I wrote this review to make people aware that CEVA shipping is absolutely rubbish and they are the most unprofessional company I have ever dealt with. They kept my TV at their local location for 8 days and marked a note saying that they called the customer and he did not answer and the online tracking says something else totally. But I never received any phone call or VM, and the customer service tells me that they don't know because they are only answering phone - only answering phones ?? what the hell is that ? - and tell me to leave a VM on their system and then no one responds for 2 days.

So if you want to buy this TV buy it from some other place which uses UPS/fedex shipping because through Amazon you don't have a choice but to go through ceva.

  5. Top notch LCD TV, without a doubt. I researched for many months and came across the Samsung's 120hz TV's just a few weeks ago. In doing many detailed comparisons, this TV by far takes the cake. The built in sub woofer and added interactive features puts this TV on another level. Best TV sound system I've ever owned. Was planning on getting a new surround sound right away, but now I think I will do without for a while. Connects to your home network, for live internet connection with up to minute news, weather, etc...go to Samsungs website for more interactive features..too many to list here. Picture is just crazy good, I have Dish HD/DVR and I could not ask for a better picture. Can't wait to see what BluRay looks like on it in my house...saw it the store, but don't have bluray just set. As for Amazon and their delivery system (CEVA Logistics), it could not have gone any smoother. I was concerned having it shipped, but I just could not find a better price anywhere, that was a reputable company. BEWARE OF WILD DIGITAL on the web, they are basically a scammer..look for reviews on them, and do not buy...AMAZON rocks!! Good luck and enjoy, if you end up buying. Compare this 7 series to the 6 series, very similar, but the 7 has a few more unique features, for just a few hundred bucks more..either way though, you can't go wrong with the Samsung's 5,6 or 7 series..6 and 7 though are the only ones with the new technology of 120hz, unless you go to another brand!

  1. I did a great deal of research and this is an excellent value. Less than half the price of a similar size plasma. I have a 42 inch plasma and the picture difference between the two is indistinguishable. A fantastic value for the dollar if you have the space. Better than I expected.

  2. I ordered this set after doing lots of research, (both in store and online) which I strongly advise everyone to do on any flat screen television purchase.

In a local store the TV screen looks a bit darker than the Plasma and LCD sets that surround it, and the viewing angle is significantly worse than the flat panel competitors. However, after calculating the maximum viewing angle I would be observing it from in my house, I decided that this would not be too much of an issue. The accuracy of color reproduction seems to be much improved on this model over the previous Sammy DLPs which are not LED backlit. It also looks much truer than LCDs, and on par with the top plasmas to my eyes.

White Glove delivery arrived 5 days sooner than the shipping company estimated, and within their delivery time frame of 11-3 (although at the very very end of it) They set it up on my stand, and waited while I hooked up the HDMI Cable to assure that it produced a picture with my HDTV Cable.

I set the picture to "Standard" and let me tell you I was very impressed by the picture quality without any tweaking of custom settings. Blacks are quite accurately produced, and I didn't notice any glare whatsoever even though I have large windows in my living room that admit lots of sunlight. Plenty of HDMI and component connections for all your Bluray, PS3, DVD, XBOX360 or whatever as well. And thankfully the screen is plenty bright, which was my #1 concern after seeing it in stores.

I turned on a baseball game in HD, and the picture in my house is as good as any I have ever experienced (I also have a 37" Samsung LCD and the picture quality of this 61" DLP actually looks better). This set definitely looks much better in home than in store, no question.
Also much less motion judder with fast action than I was expecting which is great since I watch tons of sporting events. Even Standard Definition channels look fine on this TV, which is unusual for a big HDTV set.

As for the sound quality, on par with other HDTV sets which means really crappy. Everyone knows these TVs all have poor sound quality, so plan ahead and have a Home Theater system ready to go which makes the overall viewing experience much better.

After a week of viewing, I would give this TV a 9.5 out of 10 rating. The only negatives being poor sound quality and a smaller serviceable viewing angle than competing technologies that doesn't even affect me.

For the price of this DLP you could only get about a 46" LCD or Plasma with a picture that would compare. In my opinion that makes it a no brainer to go for the 61" DLP. The extra screen size really makes a difference in relieving eye strain anywhere past 10 feet away, as the picture is so huge you can be 30 feet away in a different room and have no problem at all reading the bottom line on ESPN or seeing the score of a game. Awesome!!! Trust me look no further, as of July 2008 there is no better TV for the money unless you will be watching from extreme viewing angles off to the side of the screen.

A few side notes: This TVs LED backlighting that replaces the bulb and color wheel on old DLPs is reported to reduce the "rainbow" effect that some viewers experience, and end the need for replacing bulbs (which will run you about $[...] every 3 years for non LED DLPs). Also this TV is "3D Ready" which won't do anything for you now, but future proofs it for new technologies already being developed.

In depth technical info and settings recommendations can be found at [...]

And finally the Bush 60" Black Metal with Black Glass TV stand looks like it was built for this monster TV (quite a sexy combo) and assembles in about 30 minutes

  3. This seems to my non-expert eyes as one of the best dlp type tv's out there. What was really nice on top of that is that the menus are set up in a very simple and functional way, which lets you navigate to what you want immediately.

  4. Replaced a Samsung 40" LCD with this HL61A750 Samsung. It took all of 10 minutes to place new HDTV on existing 60" TV stand and plug in HDMI cables from existing electronics along with the power cord. Turned TV on per Quick Start Guide and watched a NASCAR race. Very little tweaking required.

HDTV channels look fantastic, some look almost like 3D with fantastic, realistic color.

Have both Blu-ray and HD-DVD players hooked up to this new set. We can't believe the picture from both players, including Standard DVD's.

This Samsung HL61A750 has a better picture than large screen Sony, LG and Mitsubishi sets several of or neighbors just purchased. They told us so when they watched the night NASCAR race at Daytona this past Saturday evening as our guests. The cars racing under the lights at Daytona looked like you could reach out and touch them. Great picture!!!! Absolutely no blur with fast moving objects.

Best bang for the buck with free shipping and "white glove delivery". The truck pulled up to our house 4 days early. The delivery guys carried the big box into the house and unpacked the monster. Inspected the TV with me and were gone. Took about 30 minutes and they were very careful.

This unit is very quiet and the screen is perfect. No pesky expensive bulbs to replace either!

Watching IMAX DVD's such as Super Speedway and others on this set will blow you away. Especially with a good sound system.

We are very happy with this Samsung LED powered DLP HDTV.

  5. Samsung HL61A750 61-Inch 1080p LED Powered DLP HDTV
New 61" LED DLP HL61A750 Samsung, worked great for two weeks, then 2" wide horizontal black stripe appeared suddenly in the middle of the screen and remained without change, all channels - power down and unplug did not fix. I have returned the TV to Amazon and have received a prompt refund. I probably will try again on the slightly smaller 56" LED when it comes out next month, or reorder the 61" when the price drops to the level of this last purchase.

I wish I could paste my picture of the screen with the black stripe here - it overwhelms the screen and is not remotely tolerable.

It's sad, but Samsung quality control just failed on this one.

  1. OK, so like several other reviewers I was a little hesitant about making such a major purchase on Amazon. But after a few good reviews and Amazon's unbeatable price I decided to give it a shot and am very pleased. The TV was delivered exactly one week after I clicked purchase and was in perfect condition. I understand that CEVA is not required to do anything more than unpack it, but I asked if he could help me install it on the mount and he did. He spent probably 30 minutes helping me unpack, remove the TV stand, and mount the TV. Then he asked me to hook it up, turn it on and verify that the picture, sound, and remote all worked. I was completely satisfied. Also, the price has already dropped and Amazon issued me a credit so I can verify the price match guarantee works!

Yeah, the TV is awesome, too. I upgraded from a standard def tube TV so maybe anything would look awesome to me, but I did plenty of research online and standing in front of the Wall 'O TVs at retailers before I made this purchase and I think the TV looks even better in my house than it did in the stores.

My main concern/paranoia (other than buying it online) was image retention (IR) or burn-in but from everything I've read burn-in is something of the past and IR is temporary. So I decided to turn down the brightness and contrast a little but opted not to use a break-in DVD or anything like that. I'm still careful to watch as much as I can at full screen rather than letterbox but only once was I able to see a dark line on the all-white screen where a scoreboard was. My girlfriend never saw it and thought I was crazy and the next time I checked the all-white screen it was gone. So, I feel much better about this now.

All in all, I couldn't be happier with this purchase and everytime I look at my puny 36" tube I wonder how I even survived . . .

  2. I haven't yet received my TV, so this review doesn't really reflect on its quality. I hope to write on that once I get it. When I made the purchase 11 days ago (June 16th), the promised delivery time was 3-5 days. I made the purchase hoping to get delivery by Friday with the plan to start watching the important games of Euro cup and start early on Wimbledon. First Thursday, then Friday, and finally Saturday came and went and there was no sign of my TV on this website's tracking system.

This was all I was seeing twice a day:
    Date Time Location Event Details
June 19, 2008 06:04:15 AM San Francisco CA US Arrival Scan
June 17, 2008 04:00:00 PM Reno NV US Shipment received by carrier

The Euro was gone and I was on track to lose the first round of Wimbledon too. I get an email on the 25th to contact CEVA for delivery from some [...] address, and it lands in my Junk folder as expected. I see it by the end of the day and call the number at a bit past 6 PM and it goes strainght to a voicemail. Work requires me to be in important meetings sometimes pretty much from 9 to 5, so I don't leave a voice mail. I called the next evening a bit before 6 PM to catch someone on the phone for to schedule delivery for Saturday. The biggest shocker came when the guy picks up and tells me "the truck comes to your town only from Monday to Friday between 10 AM and 6 PM". Worse still "you be home eaither from 10 to 2 or 2 to 6 to receive the delivery. We can not call you 15 minutes before as we do not provide our drivers with cell phones". How convenient? I live in the middle of Silicon Valley in CA, and that's the worst delivery schedule I've ever heard of (apart from the cable and electricity guys of course). By now I was almost losing myself as there is no way I can skip work for half a day to get my television. I would never go to a local store to buy a television for half a day on a weekday. But do I really have a choice now? Probably not! I tell him I will call back when I arrange a backup for myself at work. I call him in 30 minutes but it's past 6 and I leave a voicemail to have my TV delivered on 27th between 10 and 2 (that's today BTW). WHen I call them again in the morning around 8:30 AM they said TOO LATE! The trucks have left for the day, call us one day in advance! Voicemails don't count!! IF YOU BOOK NOW WE CAN DELIVER BETWEEN MONDAY AND FRIDAY NEXT WEEK! PERFECT!! Another weekend up in the smoke.

Now I'm walking around wearning a big L on my face for spending almost two grands on AMAZON. What amazes me more is not the lack of service from a bunch of CEVA guys in my town. I wonder if AMAZON ever realizes that their biggest weekness against the local stores is the amount of time it takes people to get the stuff they buy. If they do, why would they pick such a loser delivery company? Is this the only way they could afford to deliver cheap enough to compete? If yes then I will be very scared the next time I make a purchase here.

Maybe some of you wonder why wouldn't I go pick the damn thing from the CEVA place. If I pick it up myself and it is damaged or it doesn't work, I'm on my own. I'm worried looking at their service standards that i will have bigger problems to deal with in that case.

I hope to add more in the next few days! Until then take care and good luck everybody!

  3. My review title sez it all. Delivered 3 days earlier than estimated (And I'm way out here in the middle of the woods). Delivery fellow helped me unpack, set up on cabinet and made sure the TV was working properly. Nice guy!

I've had a Sony 42" rear projection HDTV for 6 years, now, and it has worked just fine... good picture, too. But this Plasma blows it away! The detail (using my Panasonic Blu-Ray disk player) is amazing... and even regular non-HD cable looks great.

I will mention that there is a substantial screen reflection/glare due to it's 'gloss'... but my theatre room is dark, and I shade the windows, so I have no problem with it.

I'll let all the other techie reviewers go over the specific settings and details. I just wanted to chime in with my rave.

100% satisfied! (I don't even mind the little blue power light ;-)

    Thanks Amazon! And Thanks Samsung!

    -s

  4. I have owned a 3rd generation Pioneer plasma for about 7 years. This replaced it in my main HT room. My HT is heavy on the sound side as I started out in life as an audiophile. I am very detail oriented and discriminating when it comes to all electronics.

This TV is all it was said to be and more. The first thing that just blew me away were the black levels. Compared to the "old" Pioneer, it was just simply in another world all its own. The Pioneer had a beautiful picture but I had no idea what I was missing in black level. I do not own an HD or BluRay yet so I am feeding with component for the DVD and come straight out of the wall with TWC feed.

The picture was great out of the box but got better with some fine tuning. The anti-reflective coating is actually very good. Yes it will show some reflection because it is flat and smooth but the AR coating is definitely there and working.

User interface is well laid out and intuitive to use. Settings are good except for choices of screen size/type. There could be a couple more choices that would really be useful to reduce the horizontal bars without distorting the picture so badly. The remote is excellent! Made like all remotes should be... with a backlight. The choice of gloss black is questionable but it doesn't affect its function.

This thing picked up most of the digital feeds from TWC all on its own once set to do an automatic scan and channel setup. The HD channel feeds are just awesome!!! I will not be paying for a converter box in this room!

For the price, this thing is just a steal. But, I would say that taking into account I paid $4,500 for the Pioneer 7 years ago and it had no tuner functions. If you have been considering a large screen and have been making excuses, you now have no more excuses left. Amazon had this for $400 less than the local discount stores... plus, no friggin taxes!!!!!

No issues with delivery at all. Came 4 days before it was estimated.

    Amazon rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. The purchase of this Samsung HD Plasma TV has been long in the making. This wasn't a quick decision, a lot of web time research went into it. I couldn't be more pleased with the product. Setup was a breeze and the "tweaking" is fun. The picture is awesome and the set's features (even when not in use} are incredible.
This is my second plasma TV and I wouldn't go any other way. The richness and depth of color and lack of "ghosting" that is so prevalent with LCDs make the choice so obvious.
I'm running DISH's HD package, a DVD HDD recorder with HDMI output (Philip's), a PS3 (with the BLU RAY player - sweet), an XBOX 360, and an IPTV unit for Skyangel broadcasts. First three take up the 3 HDMI inputs and the last two are run through components. Everything is being run with optical cables through a Samsung 800 watt 5.1 surround sound system. I also set everything up so that I can also use the TV's speaker system instead if I so desire. All that to say that the 550 handles it all so easily and the menu navigation is very intuative. I could not be more pleased with this TV.
This is my first experience with Amazon and I'd highly recommend them for purchases of this kind. Even though I ran into a glitch with the "white glove delivery...NOT, they were so accomodating to make everything right with me and have succeeded. No complaints with Amazon; they've been incredible. CEVA...well...that's another story. Should mention that there was also a price reduction on this TV twice in two days and Amazon immediately credited my account when I called them. Also, the price was a real incentive, deeply discounted, at least for where I live.
I'll shop Amazon again. Pick this TV if you're looking for an above average plasma HD TV at a fair price. You won't be disappointed (check out all the other reviews at this site.

  1. It's been a month of trouble-free, great tv,
beginning and ending with plug and play.
This has to be the best 37" tv on the internet.

  2. The was a great experience both with the vendor and with the TV. We had previously ordered a TV from another on-line site and after months of waiting finally cancelled the order. We found this TV on Amazon and ordered it instead and got in a just a few days. The delivery people were great. They showed up when they said they would, unpacked the TV, took the box and carried the TV up to our bedroom. The TV is everything we wanted. It's the perfect size at 37" and the picture is outstanding from pretty much any angle. It basically is perfect for us. You really can't go wrong at this price.

  3. I have had this television for about a month now. I have been very satisfied with the purchase. The picture quality is excellent and the input options are great (especially being able to use 1920x1080 with my computer). As some reviewers have commented, the speakers are by no means top notch. Since I had previously been using my laptop for everything for which I use this, I cannot complain. If you want a full top-notch experience for movies or games or whatever, then you will probably want a separate sound system, though I doubt many will find this terribly off-putting.

  4. When I first got my PS3 several months ago, my next plan was to get a worthy Full HDTV that can handle the full power of the PS3. I did A LOT of research to find a feature packed Full HD TV with consideration to size, quality, and price. It all lead me to this amazing TV. I mean I never read one bad review about this TV, ever. Not on Amazon.com or any other sites. I looked at it specs, it was all I needed and more. Samsung is one of the best LCD TV manufacturers these days and quality is out of the question.

As soon as I got this TV up and runnin', man the difference between its picture and my 11-year-old LG Flatron TV was HUGE!! I was amazed how in the world I managed to play PS3 on a SD TV. Playing my games again on this great HDTV was like playing them for the 1st time in every sense of the word. The contrast is stunning, the blacks are deep and the color production is more than satisfying. Even in fast moving scenes, the 5 ms response time makes it really ghost free and lag free.

As mentioned in other reviews, the sound is somehow on the weak side. The bass is not that powerfull (even with equalizer setting). The sound isn't that rich but it's not bad, it only could have been better. However, connecting a home theatre is the obvious way to go and that's my next plan (lol).

The build quality is great, and it feels well built and sturdy. The remote takes a little while to get used but it's no big deal at all. The only takes I've got on this TV are one: the remote control reception is somehow weak a little and it should be facing the IR sensor on the TV (already mentioned by another review here) two: the remote buttons needs a little push to respond, you have to press a little hard for them to respond and finally: the rear connections plate feels a little loose somehow, when I connect an HDMI for example, part of the panel goes inside the set, just be careful not pushing too hard when plugging cables on the back panel.

Overall, it's a great great HDTV set and surpassed my expectations and I'm very pleased with it. Recommended to all you guys out there searching for a full featured set with great money value.
    Two thumbs up!!!

  5. Great product. Arrived quickly in perfect shape. Excellent blacks, no glare. Love it.
