- Westinghouse SK-32H540S 32-Inch 720p LCD HDTV
I bought this TV thinking Wow! what a great deal and originally, the TV was great. Great picture quality, kept up with fast action, great sound. THEN JUST TWO YEARS after I bought it - it just quit. Nothing. Called the Westinghouse customer support and was told to contact the two repair companies in my area. Called them and BOTH told me to just throw it away. By the time the parts were ordered and came in, I'd have spent more on repairs than simply buying a new LCD TV. The repair people told me that they have had a lot of customers with this same problem and that this brand is absolute junk.
DO NOT BUY THIS BRAND!!!

- Replaced a 15 year old tube TV with the Phillips. I made my decision subsequent to a road trip or two to nearby stores because I don't believe you can make a subjective decision on picture quality based only on written reviews. I looked at the major brands side by side and liked the Phillips picture. Excellent quality per my tastes.
Easy to set up wiring. Also like the Philips method that guides you through color, tint, brightness and contrast adjustments by going through a series of side by side on screen pictures and asking you to pick the one that most appeals to you. Much nicer than making tint or color adjustments via separate controls.
Overall, I am very satisfied with this TV. One minor con would be the lack of swivel capability on the base.
- My friend told me never buy any electronics from Philips but I decided to trust this giant brand. After I got this TV, the nightmare began. First, the DVI audio input not function properly. Second, I really doubt this is a 1080p HDTV. The resolution was so horrible after I connect my computer to HDMI input on TV. Third, the color looks weird on red. It is even worse than my old Panasonic 720p TV. After couple hours adjustments, I had no choice but returned this TV. Right now, I feel such a fool not listening to my friend. Anyway, it is totally wasting of time and money.
- I researched quite a few 42" 1080p HDTV's before purchasing this one. My decision was between this Phillips and the LG 42LG50. I went with this one because it was cheaper, had all the same features and the many good reviews. I have not been disappointed. The TV is attractive and made of quality materials. Viewing is great from any angle. Both the SD and the HD picture on this TV is amazing.
I tweaked factory Picture settings a bit:
Contrast 100
Brightness 53
Color 65
Tint 0
Sharpness 4
Color Temperature Custom
R-WP 96
G-WP 117
B-WP 94
R-BL 3
G-BL 1
Perfect Pixel HD on
Dynamic contrast medium
Noise reduction maximum
Color enhancement maximum
Active control on
Light sensor on
Picture format automatic
This TV also has a fantastic Image Stretchng feature that adjusts the aspect ratio automatically depending on what you are watching, the picture never looks out of proportion, very nice.
In response to other reviews, I've found no problems with the picture, the audio is nothing great but I have sound running through my stereo receiver so I don't use the TV speakers. The TV remote does turn the TV completely off, standby is not a problem. The light sensor adjusts the picture for the light in the room, very nice feature. I updated the firmware using the USB port, no problem.
Two of my friends paid twice as much for their Sony's and mine looks just as good. Highly recommended.
- This is my second HDTV. I bought a Vizio 32" and I love it, great set. I moved into a new house and just needed a bigger screen for the Great Room. I looked around for two weeks, comparing prices v. features and quality of picture. I found this set at Target for just over a thousand. It beat out the LG equivilant at Circuit City with ease. Set it up, wow. This is the finest television I have ever owned, and would take it over the Sony Bravia anyday. Of course, if the Bravia came down in price I might reconsider that statement. Anyways, the Phillips 42" LCD 1080p is amazing. Haven't had time to customize my settings, but the factory presets are enough to spure this review.
- This is my second HD LCD TV and it is great! It has excellent colors, blacks and set design.
The speakers are rather weak, but I am comparing that to my HUGE sound system.
The remote is long, but has good buttons.
The set looks beautiful, except for the cheap looking shiny, plastic support on the base. Luckily it is mostly hidden in the shadow.
The set up menus are thorough but relatively easy to use.
Lately, while watching the Olympics in HD, I have noticed a bit of choppy motion blur. The high speed action gets a bit pixelly. But, with most movies and HD shows, I have not noticed it. The picture is smooth and crisp with great color.
This is probably not the best TV in the world, but I can't tell. And for the price, it is perfect!

5 comments about LG 37LG50 37-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV, Gloss Piano Black.
- Updated June 17, 2008: This is our second flat-screen LG TV. We bought a bigger unit for downstairs and just picked this one up for the Master suite. We've hung it on the wall, using the HDMI connection. We love it.
Pro:
-Very light (~35 pounds) and super thin (~4")
-Remote is nice and feels good in my hand
-I like that the power button is on the front (cleverly hidden into a piece of the silver trim that runs along the bottom) and input, volume and channel can be changed from the right side/edge. This is handy when the remote goes missing or it's far away.
-Excellent black, and contrast. I personally think it produces the best (blackest) black, and doesn't wash out
-Rated for 60,000 hours of use (that's 2500 days if you left it on the whole time or 20.5 years if you watch it only 8 hours a day)
-3 HDMI connects, we are using 2, plus it does has USB 2.0 so it can power more advanced devices, presumably like "thumb drives" so that you can view digital photos (although we've not tried that yet)
-Fast and easy set-up/install (hung on the wall)
-Speakers are hidden
-In case it wasn't clearly described in the tech specs you've seen elsewhere, this is a 16:9 widescreen LCD HD 1080p TV (that's full high-definition)
-Warm up time is short, maybe 3 seconds or so
-Very wide viewing angle, looks great in a big space when seated to the side of the TV
-Good for Blu-Ray (although we don't have it... our DVD player does "upgrade" our DVD signal/picture, but it's not true Blue-Ray)
Con:
-Full sound, but in my opinion with the factory settings we didn't get as strong of a center channel as we would like, which usually contains the primary dialog. This led us to ramp up the volume to compensate and would not have been an issue if we were hooking into our stereo for surround sound. Since we did not do this, some trial and error with the sound settings was required for us to successfully mitigate this problem.
Neutral:
-Tip: when looking for a wall mount, don't pay more than about $75. This unit is light, and anything big and fancy is probably going to lead to a financial soaking!
-We haven't used the stand, sorry. It looks ok I guess, but can't review it since I haven't used it.
-Tip: I can't confirm this, however the HDMI cable box I got from my cable company responds much faster to channel changing that our other regular HD box did before we traded it in when we got our TV. The old box would randomly pause for 1-8 seconds as well. We've not had this problem with either HDMI cable box we've gotten.
-Tip: Play with your settings to get the best sound, don't rely on the factory settings.
Bottom line: The LG HDTV line is very good as a whole. This unit is no exception, it's awesome. We highly recommend it.
- I have had my LG for about 2 weeks. I did about 2 weeks of research before purchasing it. I wanted to replace the 30" Olevia in my bedroom that is a little too small. I measured my armoire and had room for most 37" flat screens. My criteria for a new set was size and I wanted 1080P. My research included the JVC LT-37X688, the Toshiba REGZA 37RV530U and the Samsung LN37A550. I decided on getting the LG mainly because of a couple of good reviews, LG makes many of the screens of the other manufacturers and because I could pick one up locally.
The actual unit is beautiful. It is shipped with off the stand. One complaint I have about the stand is that you stick it inside the bottom of the TV and you screw it into the back. The screws are set so deep that although I thought they were in, 2 have fallen out. It doesn't really effect the TV though that the screws fell out. This is the third LCD TV I have unpacked and it was the only one not shipped with the stand on.
Picture out of the box is amazing. There are several preset modes that you can choose that effect picture and sound. These can be tweaked by the user. It also has a mode called Real Cinema that displays HD movies in 24 frames per second like they are shot in.
I have a PS3, Dish Network HD and a Toshiba Laptop with HD DVD and HDMI out that I have used with the TV without a problem. I am watching Live Free or Die Hard on the PS3 now and it looks stunning.
Besides the stand problem, there is one other thing I don't like. Like all flat screens now, the speakers are hidden behind the plastic benzel. Rumbling sound effects and low frequency sounds cause it to vibrate sometimes. This is more noticeable the closer you get to the TV. Some reviews of the 37" Samsung model I was looking at also mentioned this problem. Ironically, this is the reason I did not get the Sammy. This is why I give it a 4 star rating. Of course, if you are hooking to a surround system this complaint doesn't matter.
ADDENDUM I wanted to add that this LCD has the flat matte screen. No shiny glare like my CRT RPTV with the plexi-glass cover make movie viewing so much more enjoyable.
- We really like the LG TV. The swivel stand is great for our use. It was easy to set up. The only negative thing is that the plastic sides & top of the TV glare. The screen does not, but why have the sides and top shine and reflect room or outside light?
- I did many weeks' worth of research online regarding HDTVs, since I was in the market for one. I have had this TV for a few weeks now and the quality is nothing short of absolutely fantastic. I bought a PS3 right around the same time and playing video games and viewing Blu-Ray movies is just spectacular. In the evening, if there are no lights on except for the TV, it's better than being at the movie theater!
I bought the 37" because with all the features included with it (and it supporting 1080p), the price really couldn't be beat. That and when I was at the store comparing them, it just looked more brilliant and bright compared to the similar Samsung 37" right beside it (plus it was $200 cheaper). When I took it back to my apartment, I was blown away by how large it really is; they don't look so large in-store when they're near the 46" and 52" TVs!
Setup is pretty simple. Didn't take too long, though the screws for the base of the TV stand are set a bit deep, so it was a little tough to fully tighten them in. Something else that left a bit more to be desired is the sound. If you don't have a home theater system already (which I don't), you may be cranking the volume up more than you normally would.
All in all, this HDTV is incredible. Be sure you do your research, but I doubt you'll be disappointed with this one!
- I looked at the Scarlet series but for the price this was a great value. I really like the clear voice feature - it makes a big difference. Easy installation. I would rather have a matte surround because the glossy reflects light. The HD is fabulous! I would definitely recommend to friends.

- this is the best tv out right now, i have mine now for a month and love it , let me tell you sony needs to keep up with this one, its what you call perfect , all i can say is wow, its almost 3D, its that good. AAAAA
- My husband and I have owned alot of different TV's and I tell you what, this is the best TV ever.. the quality of the picture is amazing... crystal clear.. the features are increadable.. I am using it as a Tv and and a computer monitor! you can't beat it, its a great value too.
- Got it for $1,700 shipped vs. $1,900-$2,300 sold elsewhere. Great high definition picture and very good standard definition. The best viewing angle of any LCD screen that I've seen. Sound quality is atypical, with good simulated bass. Built-in virtual surround sound eliminates the need for a home theatre system except for audiophiles. Like most LCD, it does not do black color well. Human skin tone looks cartoonish at closeup, a negative for this set. There is no blur motion, even with NASCAR. The on-screen menu is very easy to navigate, so no need to read the manual on the CD. Lots of connectivity options on the back and a few jacks on the side for camcorder (no HiDef.) Auto-sizing is always correct on screen size - unlike some other HDTVs that sometimes get it wrong. There is a green/red status LED so that I know whether the TV is actually on or in standby mode (less than 1W with EnergyStar.) The set is heavy at 110 pounds, but that also helps deter theft I reckon. The shining and narrow black frame is absolutely beautiful. Overall, I highly recommend this 52" monster.

5 comments about Samsung HPT5054 50-Inch Plasma HDTV.
- Amazon was a very good company to deal with, no problems and no hassels. The TV has been great, and I am very satisfied with the whole transaction.
- I use this TV for my baby to watch Noggin which isn't HD. After a few weeks of use the Noggin channel logo and side black bars burned into the screen. I tried using the burn-in removal feature (Samsung recommends running it for 1+ hour )which only helps about %30. I guess this is one of the biggest draw back of plasma TVs. Totally unacceptable. This was my first plasma and will probably be my last.
- I bought this TV in January and loved it. Eventually I noticed a flickering problem where the screen brightness would flicker up and down. Read about it on the AVS forums and got it fixed through Samsung support. Then I noticed the image retention. If you play any xbox 360 games or watch tv in 4:3 with sidebars it will show up. You can run the screen burn in program that will eventually wipe it off but it always comes back next time you play. Ever play GTA4? See that radar in the bottom left? That is always going to be on your TV after you are done playing. The longer you go without wiping it with the cleaner the longer it will stay on there. If you play video games do yourself a favor and don't buy this set. I sold mine and am saving for another set preferably LCD. I just wanted to warn people trying to decide which set to buy. Avoid this set.
- it`s not even 2 years since I bought this tv and it already started crapping out on me, I have been seeing blue patches, pixels moving back and forth on the side of the screen (not a burn in. the patches are moving) definitely killing all the fun and enjoyment. now samsung would charge me $100 bucks just to come and take a look at it, and the technician over the phone said he thinks it could be a defective Plasma screen and would probably be have to replaced with a new one which would cost me a hefty $$$ of course the piece of crap tv is out of warranty and although it`s a defected screen Samsung will do absolutely nothing about the situation unless I pay for it. I have seen a lot of complains over the internet about the same issue on Samsung Plasma`s so I would recommend you to buy LCD, if you set your mind on Plasma then definitely go with some other brand since this Samsung is a huge piece of crap.
- I've owned this tv for 6 months now,and I'm very satisfied with the picture
quality and options. The sound could be better but is fine when using Onkyo
reciever.Picture quality for video games and dvd playback is excellent. My HD Direct TV picture looks awesome on this unit. There is some glare from
lighting in the house or the sun, but its not as bothersome as some other tv's.I have had no problems with this tv.Everything works as it should.
I would highly recomend this tv to anyone looking for the best picture, biggest size, and best price. After all, thats why I bought it!

4 comments about Samsung FPT5894W 58-Inch 1080p Wireless Plasma HDTV.
- The wireless system creates a delay that makes this TV unsuitable for use with video games. I have both a Nintendo Wii and a computer hooked up to the TV. With both, there is a noticeable and significant onscreen delay. If you simply want to watch television, this product is fine. However, if you want to use it for games, select another TV, you will be disappointed with this one.
- The Wireless causes the picture to delay for at least 180ms, your surround reciever needs to be able to delay or it will look like a bad synch'ed movie. Not any good for Wii or PS3, the wireless does break up once i a while, but there is no cable mess at all. I will return this TV and get another with long HDMI cables.
- Shame on them for not plastering across the box of this unit in big red letters "CANNOT BE USED FOR ANYTHING BUT TV AND DVD!!!!!" The delay between the wireless box and the screen makes playing video games impossible and using the set with a computer in a business environment for things like powerpoint presentations a major annoyance. Why even release the thing until you have sufficient technology to fix this problem? We aren't THAT desperate for a wireless plasma! These days, even an elderly couple who would never in a million years consider playing a video game on their TV needs to take this into consideration because their grandkids will likely be coming over for the weekenend with their Nintendo Wii. What if they don't find out until a year or so after they purchase it? What a bummer! Like I said, shame on Samsung. This set will really be a letdown to a lot of people at some point during their ownership.
- Okay, I will make this short and sweet - This Plasma TV is absolutely the best big-screen experience I have ever witnessed - I have used several large format/hd monitors, Mitsubishi, Proscan, Sony, etc., and this one outperforms them all -
To those who complained about the problems with attaching their computer or video game machines - it's very simple DON'T!!! This TV and it's Wireless Components are designed for one thing - ABSOLUTE VIDEO - from high definition programming or Blu Ray DVD ------It is not an add-on for a Playstation or Xbox!!!
It is really a shame that SamSung is being criticized for designing and producing this TV - I can only state that if you want an unbelievable High Definition and Blu Ray picture, you owe it to yourself to check this instrument out.........THANK YOU SAMSUNG!!!

- I too had problems with this TV. It would never play any of my DVD's even new ones. After about 3 months, the picture just suddenly died. I can still get sound but no picture. I would never buy another Magnavox.
- Purchase the newest model "/37" and you'll find vast improvements over previous model. Best quality/components by far for price range for this combo style. Shop around for pricing as this model is being agressively marketed by some "big" retailers this Christmas season.
- I purchased this Magnavox TV/DVD 6 months ago and am pleased with the picture and sound quality. I'm using a roof top antenna and pickup several HD channels and many more digital channels. It's great...except the screen size. It's not 16:9 as HD TV is broadcast, but 16:10. The picture is stretched to 10" high instead of the 9" it should be, so everyone is tall and thin. Magnavox should offer a software upgrade to correct this problem or offer replacement TVs. I would not have bought this TV if I was aware of this design problem.
- This LCD TV looks like a good deal price wise, but the model I bought (not from Amazon, but the same model) had a lot of defects, and after ~100 days, past the brief 90-day warranty it had broke. TV started to turn on and off randomly for no apparent reason while getting interrupted by the (basic) built-in DVD player. It could not hold a signal to the TV. It may cut off TV signal to black or the audio would mute, pop, or it could also reset randomly. And it blasted a high-frequency tone each time at maximum when it cut off the picture, and then continues the loop over and over (the volume blasting will make you jump in your seat). The TV's ATSC/Qam tuner must of broke, and after a week of tolerating its problems, of turning on and off and blasting, it was thrown out.
- These and almost every brand of 19" HDTV use the same LCD panels made for computer monitors. Wide screen Computers monitors are 16:10 and the number of computer monitors far far exceed the number of Televisions by the hundreds of millions. If a TV makers tried to get a company to make a 16:9 panel the cost would make the TV too expensive and you would not buy it...
So you will just have to live with it, no matter which brand you buy.

- This is the real deal. Nothing else in this price range comes even close.I have mine hooked up to Direct TV HD. Landscapes colors are perfect. Peoples skin tones are spot on. The sharpest resolution I have ever viewed. Easy to hook up. The THX certification seems to have raised the bar for all other sets. For those trying to decide between LCD and Plasma don't let the issues about distrations from the reflection of objects on real glass scare you. I have a well lighted living room with lots of indirect light and glare is not a factor. The picture seems very natural and organic as compared to the synthetic look of LCD. The speakers and audio are better than average but not exceptional. Perhaps Panasonic will someday combine a THX certified sound system with the THX certified monitor. Swivel stand is a nice feature for no extra money. Very, very satisfied.
- The 46PZ800U is everything I was hoping for in a HDTV. Beautiful picture, easy to hook things up to, and a great looking addition to my living room. The size was perfect for a long narrow room (17x11.5). The CEVA delivery people assembled the stand and then placed it in its permanent location, had me connect my HD cable box to it. (yes I was excited about getting the TV. Got the HD cable box 2 days ahead of time, Blu-ray player and HD dvd player were sitting here waiting along with the cables to hook them up)We tested the TV and then when everything was working they asked for my signature. Overall the whole experience was great and I would reccomend Amazon as a Wonderful way to get a new Panasonic TV. PS price on Amazon was over $300. better than any other price I saw for this model.either in store circulars or on-line. Last, I chose this model mainly because of the over 5000 gradients of color, the single sheet of glass construction, and the THX certification.
- I bought the Panasonic Viera TH-46PZ800U 46" 1080p Plasma HDTV because of the THX certification and the reviews on cnet, I was not disappointed. The picture is highly adjustable, but the four preset options are very good for watching different inputs. For example when you select the game input it automatically increases the brightness and color, for watching BR movies it gives you a warmer setting. The only disappointing part was the delivery. The delivery guys were dirty, leaving marks on the floor and walls. They didn't know if they were supposed to attach the stand, and when they decided it was necessary they did not seem to take great care with the TV. In the end everything worked great.
- This TV is superb. HD images are amazingly clear, and the color is awesome!
When I was looking to buy an HDTV, I was worried about how bad standard def images would look. SD images looked pretty bad on a lot of the HDTVs I had seen. However, this TV does a fine job cleaning up SD images, and I don't notice any artifacting unless I'm only 3 or 4 feet from the TV. This is pretty important, because a lot of programming is still only available in standard definition.
This TV also has great sound. I know that's not something you normally look for in a TV. However, I live in an apartment, and I don't plan on getting a kickin' sound system anytime soon, because I don't want to disturb my neighbors. The speakers on this TV perform nicely instead, and the bass is pretty dang good.
Overall: highly recommended.
- I purchased this TV about a month ago and I was holding off on my review because I wanted to break in the set first (yes, you should still break in plasmas in spite of what the manufacturers say). I am at about 250 hours on the set, and I have to say that it is the most realistic looking picture that I have seen in a flat panel. I would even put it right up there with the Pioneer Kuros. Fleshtones are incredible and there is no oversaturation of colors. I simply used the THX mode and made basic adjustments using the DVE calibration disk on Blu Ray.
I had initially purchased a Samsung LN46A650 LCD. I liked the set but I just felt that it wasn't quite as sharp as my Samsung 42 inch 720p plasma. Also the colors were a touch too oversaturated. Amazon returned the set with no hassle and delivered the Panasonic in its place.
Initially the Panasonic also did not look quite as sharp as my 42 inch Samsung although the picture was less noisy. However, right around 200 hours or so, the picture really sharpened up. Now that the set has some hours on it, the picture is just amazing! The only other set that I have seen with a better picture (and not by much)is a 60 inch Kuro. The only thing that the Kuros have over this Panasonic is that they are a touch sharper.
This Panasonic is a phenominal buy if color decoding and a realistic picture is most important to you. If you're looking for a panel that has a bright, punchy picture with colors that are slightly cartoonish but that pop, go with the Samsung LN46A650 lcd.
PROS: Phenominal color decoding, incredibly realistic looking picture, fantastic price
CONS: Picture could be just a touch sharper, speakers are mediocre
