  1. I've had this TV for a couple weeks now, and it looks like Samsung really scores with this one. Great price and a stunning picture, with deep blacks, fast response and good off-angle viewing. And absolutely none of the backlight leakage or "clouding" problems that so many buyers report (correctly) with otherwise fine Sony models. The one complaint you're likely to see in reviews of this set is that the speakers sound thin, and that's a legitimate gripe. My three-year-old Panasonic 32-inch sounds much better. So my rating is actually about 4.5, but the picture is so fine I'm willing to round up. In my case, I plugged a set of Klipsch Groove powered speakers ($92 at Amazon) into the headphone jack, and problem solved. Many of you will have external sound systems anyway.

If you can afford the $500 difference, you might want to wait a few weeks till Panasonic's new high-end TC-37LZ800 comes out, but if you go with this Samsung I don't think it'll disappoint you.

  2. I've had this set for a little over a week, and I'm delighted with it so far. This is the first HDTV I've owned, and in preparation for buying it I did a lot of research into the different technologies available. My principle considerations were: A) A maximum size of 40", as I only have a small viewing distance (and a wife who didn't want a 2-ton altar of gleaming black plastic in her living room) B) A set that was going to look great for movies and video games, and C) price - not more than $1,000. The other major concern was having a fragile thing like this shipped, as I really didn't want to have to return it (at my cost) if there was a problem. I'm happy to say my whole experience with this model has been excellent.

In terms of the set design, it's pretty sleek and minimal. It does have a glossy black bevel (I would have preferred matte) but overall it looks very nice and simple. There is a side panel with the third of 3 HDMI connections, and the only composite jacks, all of which are hidden from the front.

Currently I'm running Time Warner HD cable (720p-1080i) through component, and an Xbox 360, outputting at 1080p, also over component. Both blew me away (this is my first HDTV after all), and I was especially taken with the 1080p signal from the 360 - rich blacks and vibrant colors, clear, lag-free images in fast games and really crisp details. Compared to my previous TV, some games now have an almost overwhelming amount of detail! Just for the record, I honestly can't speak to HDMI quality as I currently don't have the cables. So far I've been very impressed with component connections.

I calibrated the set using the THX optimizer that comes free with Finding Nemo DVD, and I'm happy with the results. Even my wife, who claims to not usually notice the difference between TVs had the first reaction of "Wow, that picture is amazing", so you can't say fairer than that.

There are plenty of different connections, including optical audio out, which is great. I have to agree with other reviewers that the sound quality from the set itself is thin and tinny, but then again I listen to audio for movies etc. through my receiver.

I honestly can't believe I'm getting these results for just over $1,000. I did a fair amount of standing like a zombie in Best Buy, comparing sets, and other than the screen size a regular Joe like me has been hard pressed to spot much difference in $2,000+ TVs.

A note on the shipping - I ordered through Amazon and received their White-Glove delivery, fulfilled by Ceva Logistics. I ordered on a Friday evening - my TV arrived the following Tuesday - a week ahead of schedule. The delivery person was 30 minutes EARLY, and patiently helped me test the set. Your experience may vary, but I was thrilled. A+ all round.

5 comments about Samsung PN50A550 50-inch 1080p Plasma HDTV.
  1. I'll start off by saying that i dont know much about HDTV. I have been using HD cable box on a 30" Samsung picture tube HDTV (1080i). I did like that picture and the sound on my connected surround sound. When i saw that best buy had 3 yrs, no interest financing, i just had to go for it, even though i found no reviews for this particular samsung model/tv. I saw reviews for the older models from samsung on different websites, so assuming that THIS tv has to be an improvement i told my family to buy it, and i also bought it for myself. Being a plasma i am still in the process of breaking the tv in. I reduced the brightness, cell light to 50% and 5. The only thing/control that is around normal is contrast at 90%. I saw Lord of the Rings on "TNT" HD and all i have to say even with my toned down setting for the tv till the breakdown period (approx 200 hrs)is OMG. The picture was just amazing, really it was as compared to the picture tube hdtv. Maybe its the bigger size but it did blow me away. Regardless of size, the colors, black levels etc is what i looked for. I am not sure how the experts will rate this TV as, but i am very happy with my purchase. Its money well spent and i'll be happy for years to come. This TV does let you change advanced settings for picture if you so choose. I skipped on the professional calibration. Some folks may want it, and rightly so, but i believe that i can get the picture which suits me, in my house for my needs.
I will probably have to update my review after the break in period. By the break in period i just mean to keep the settings low for the first 200 hrs approximately.
I am enjoying my TV and it seems darn good. I hope and am sure that you'll enjoy the performance of this tv if you choose to buy it. I do belive in Samsung, that they are creating a world class product. I just dont see the need of spending twice the $ for a pioneer plasma. I am sure its a little better but not value for the $ as the Samsung provides.

Update a week later: Yes, the tv is performing more than what i expected. Also check the best buy website for more reviews for this particular tv. I am not the only one blown away by it.

UPDATE AFTER A MONTH: This TV has blown me away. More than what i could have expected from a big screen tv. I had been leaning for a LCD tv, but when i saw this, anyway i am SOOOOOO GLAD i bought this TV.
I agree with another reviewer here, to calibrate your TV but according to your viewing conditons. This TV has been well reviewed by other websites, but you should calibrate as you deem the picture to be fit to YOUR eyes. Yes, disable all electronic anhancements and then change the numerous setting available on this TV for as you deem fit.
The only thing i can't comment on too much is sound. I usually use my surround sound but do have to listen to the tv speakers when using with my dish network connection. I have HD cable from time warmer along with SD dish network. Of course the SD picture doesn't compare with the HD picture but this TV does much better in showing me SD that a older SD picture tube TV i was originally using for the dish network connection.
In the end, awesome picture, very good sound, excellent price for this TV from samsung and the fact that it's Samsung, should make you feel confident in spending your hard earned $'s on a TV.

Good luck, i am sure that you'll enjoy and love this TV if you choose to buy this.

  2. This is my second review for this panel! The first one was lost! (Frustrating it was!!!)

First off Amazon has kept their promise with their Post-Order Price Guarantee. Delivery was prompt and the white glove delivery people were like, "This is the best condition a tv box has ever came through their shipping company". They did like Amazon said...they'll bring it in, unpack it, set it up where you want it and take the box away! One of the many reasons why I shop from Amazon!

Anyways, the plasma panel, PN50A550 is as good as I thought it was. Being a techie, I tested this thing to its full potential for a couple of weeks and I have to say that I am really impressed with the capabilities of this plasma! There are lots of great things about this plasma and I will address some questions that people have had with plasmas and this particular model...and from its predecessor, the 5084.

    Color and black levels:
The factory settings are almost OK if you don't know how to calibrate plasmas of this caliber. But if you can calibrate it yourself or spend money to get a pro to do it then PLEASE do so! Each source has its own independent set of Dynamic/Standard/Movie settings... which is great because each source has a different video quality feed. You must remember to calibrate it via the room type you have. So for bright rooms I used Dynamic (remembering to turn off any dynamic contrast settings that will lessen the performance of this plasma). I used Dynamic for daytime because I can utilize the DNIe+ option. For dark/dim lighting, I calibrated it using the Movie setting. After spending a good time on 3 sources (DVD, CABLE HD and the Wii) the video feed is mesmerizing! I tested the settings with 300, The Incredibles and Die Hard, each movie for its different characteristics. Remember not to use any dynamic contrasting when you calibrate, no need for it....ask any pro! (btw...don't use any of the E-Mode settings)

    Buzzing:
There was an issue with some 5084's having a loud buzzing sound. As of my unit, the A550 has no LOUD buzz. It has a normal, very minute buzz that you cant even here unless your ear is to the back panel.

    Heat:
This model is a LOT cooler to touch than the 5084. I read it's because of the better placement of the inner "guts". I have touched the sides and the top. Of course the top is the hottest spot but this thing doesn't emit as much heat as the 5084. That's a plus! Less heat = less energy.

Burn In/ Image Retention / Ghost images:
I have TRIED to produce burn in images with the A550(remember that I have calibrated settings and not factory)...and it's really hard. The anti-burn in settings that come with this plasma works wonders and has options to if you did have burn in, you can get rid of it. But use your head, if your have dynamic settings on and your brightness level is 55+....you're probably are going to get burn-in. There are so many ways to avoid it.

    Speakers:
I only heard the speakers when I first turned on the A550. The Samsung chime tuned its way letting me know its presence. After that, I turned them off and used my amplifier to produce the sound to outboard speakers. The only reason there are speakers on plasmas/ LCDs this size is because the consumer does not invest in a home theatre system right away. I always thought....BIG pictures need BIG sound.

All in all, this is a wonderful plasma. I even think in some ways it is better than the highly praised Kuro. I am very impressed with what this plasma has to offer and I love the way it has that "WOW!" factor when people see it for the first time. I'd have to say SD channels aren't the best but they are ok for what they are. People ask me all the time why I chose plasma over LCD? Look at one side by side and tell me which one you want to invest your money into....plasma all the way. .

    Update:
I finally used the Wiselink! I connected both a Fujifilm Finepix F50fd 12MP Digital Camera with 3 x Optical Image Stabilization and a Sony Alpha A100 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only). It recognized both and I got to show off some pics from various shoots I did over the weekend! Never knew how great something looked at "poster" image sizes!!! The A550 is GREAT!

My friend brought over his new toy, the Apple MacBook Pro MB133LL/A 15.4" Laptop (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 2 GB RAM, 200 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD SuperDrive), and we hooked it up! It was one thing to show off the new mac book pro....but on the 50incher...oh my god it was awesome! PLUS PLUS PLUS!!!!

  3. Is there really a noticeable difference between 1080i and 1080p? You bet!!! And the Samsung PN50A550S 50-inch 1080p Plasma HDTV shows off the difference brilliantly.

First let me say how pleased my experience with ordering the TV on Amazon was. I ordered it on a Monday and it was delivered in 5 days...on a Saturday!

    Okay, back to the TV.

The picture is magnificent. As I said earlier, there is a real difference between 1080i and 1080p. For the past three years I'd been watching on a 1080i maximum Hitachi Plasma, and I thought it really couldn't get much better. But it can.

1080p Blu Ray discs and Playstation 3 games in 1080p are both vividly more defined on the Samsung than on my Hitachi. At this time cable looks about the same, because the highest definition that my cable company (Cablevision) is broadcasting is 1080i. You can set the Samsung's picture to Standard (for a TV placed in a normal environment), Movie (for dark rooms) or Dynamic (for bright rooms). There are (several) other settings that the factory has pre-set and all look great, but you're free to manually adjust just about everything, and on that note....

I did have one issue that was really bumming me out. At the very bottom of the face of the TV is the Samsung logo, and directly below that is a relatively oversize, bluish, bright LED light that serves what purpose I have no idea...power indicator...decoration maybe? All that dumb light served to me was distraction; my eyes were drawn to it all the time, especially with the lights lowered while watching a movie. So I called Samsung and asked about it; I was sure that there would be no way to turn it off....but I was wrong! Customer service answered the phone with no wait after navigating briefly through a menu in order to get me to the TV people. The guy put me on hold for a minute and came back to tell me how to turn (what he agreed to be) "the very annoying" light off (the instruction also happens to be on page 67 of the User Manual). So no more annoying light!

I have set the TV's speakers to off, so I can't comment on sound. I use a Home Theater receiver in a room set up for Surround; the sound connections for the two devices (an HD Cable Box and a PlayStation 3 (60GB)) that I have go directly to my receiver (I think it's this one Onkyo TX-SR605 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver).

The TV has a USB port (called WISELINK) that lets you play MP3s & view pictures from a USB-flash-drive (which I'll probably never do either of on the TV), but importantly if/when Samsung upgrades the TV's firmware, you can download upgrades to a file on your PC, load the upgrade onto a USB drive and connect the USB drive to the TV to upload the upgrade (all explained in the User Manual).

So I am really stoked about my new Samsung PN50A550S 50-inch 1080p TV. I try hard to get to the gym more often or just get more outside activities into my everyday routine, but this TV is gonna make a couch potato out of me for sure.

  4. Let me start of by making some of you feel a little better about buying a major purchase online. I was very skeptical about having this delivered safe and on-time, but the $400+ I was saving from BB, CC & other local retailers was enough to swing me. I bought my PN50A550 from Amazon on Wed. 4/16 for $1849.98. CEVA had picked it up by the end of the day and had it on its way to me.
I called CEVA on Friday 4/18 at about 4:00pm and they told me the TV had arrived on the dock that morning. I'm not sure when they had planned on calling me to sched. delivery, but since they were more than friendly I ignored that minor gripe. They offered to deliver it Saturday, but my sched. was full, so i opted for Monday b/n 11-3.
Sure enough they arrived at 11:01, carried it in my house, unpacked it, took the time to set it up, make sure everything worked and was in good condition and could not have left me happier.
Since DirecTV never showed up the same day for their dish and receiver upgrade, I cannot comment on the HD picture as of yet, but i will be sure to post my views on the TV once they do. SD looks better than expected though; for what it's worth. And the set-up menu is easy to navigate and very descriptive. The remote has large buttons that all illuminate and the manual is very well written. It has everything you should need to know and not a lot of what you dont.
One more thing...since i placed my order, Amazon has twice since lowered their price. However, i simply called in to their C.S. and they were more than happy to credit my the difference both times. I believe i have 90days that they will protect their price. Thank you Amazon...you definately came through with flying colors.

**ok, HD finally hooked up and the picture quality is MIND BLOWING! Spent hrs watching discovery and animal planet. Can't wait to get ps3, although I can't imagine being much happier.
Stop shopping right now...trust me, you will be happy with this plasma! Plenty of settings available if you are in to tweeeking the pq. Blacks are exactly what i was looking for. No IR, loud noises or extreme heat. The sound is good enough that you don't notice they are TV speakers. Using the CNet settings, although movie mode is pretty close out of the box. Honestly, the only complaint i have is that i waited as long as i did to decide on this one.

  5. I have had a similar experience as the last person to review. Both Amazon and CEVA have been awesome. Giving the best price, including price reductions (within 30 days not 90) and very professional 'white glove' delivery.

I am over-joyed with the TV itself. Currently watching Spidey 3 on the PS3 and the picture is like crystal. Could not be happier!

  1. We saw the LNT5271F at Best Buy and fell in love with the amazing picture. You feel like you are actually there rather than watching the action. Everyone who sees our Samsung is jealous. Can't see how any TV can have a better picture, no matter what brand or price. Although the sound is very good, we went the whole nine yards and added a Yamaha surround sound system and a PlayStation 3 Blu-ray system. We ordered our Samsung online from Amazon and were very pleased with the price ($1,000 cheaper than Best Buy) and delivery. Don't be fooled by other online companys. If they are cheaper than Amazon, they are dropping your TV at the curb or not including everything with the TV. (One company wanted $300 for the pedestal stand that is shown in the picture. Guess we were supposed to take turns holding it up while the other person watched.) This is the best purchase we have ever made. We are in TV-viewing heaven!

  2. Great technology, and a fantastic TV while it works. I was truly amazed at the video quality from this unit. Unfortunately great ideals are not followed up by superior materails, workmanship or customer service. After 90 days, my unit like many others I have read about began to develop a line of dead pixles in the screen. It started as a 2 inch vertical line to the right side of the panel, and within a few days grew from top to bottom. Amazon was great, they did what they could do, but they are not the manaufacturer. When I contacted Samsung, I requested an exchange as it is only 90 days old and I thought a repair would not be justified. They will not stand behind the product, they will only send a sublet repair tech to my home to replace the LCD panel, and I have to have it removed fromt the wall and reinstalled at my own expense. The bottom line is, stick with Sony or Panasonic. These units have superior workmanship, value and durability. To send someone to my home, make me pay $200.00 to remove the unit from the wall, tear apart a brand new TV and throw parts at it is horrible customer service. It is being penny wise and dollar foolish at the expense of countless consumers. Oh...to make matters even worse, read the other reviews here, after the repair it happens again and again.... No wonder they just released LNT52a650.

  3. I should have bought this during Xmas but I assumed the price would keep dropping, I was wrong. I had to wait another 4 months until it dropped back down to $2,300. I snagged it up without hesitation. Though I was aware of the dead pixel line that plagued the other reviewers, I was going to take a chance (plus it came with a free Samsung upconverter and free shipping, which was not offered before).

It arrived via CEVA freight (formerly Eagle shipping) a week later. They delivered it first thing in the morning, unboxed it, put it on my stand and powered it up for me. No damage and no dead pixels. Boy was i relieved.

I don't have a Bluray yet but the Comcast HD movies look great! Even the Blue Planet DVD version with the upconverter looked amazing!

I hope it'll last. I kept the box just in case.

  4. I've had the TV for about two weeks now. I got a like new Refurbished 5271 unit for around 1750.00. CEVA delivery... well I will Speak of them later. The TV itself was basically new. The only way I could tell it had been returned was the bag in which the remote and model book were opened. The TV itself was spotless. Already has the newest firmware installed. 120Hz picture is very sharp and clean with just the cable wire hooked up. I get about 10 free HD channels with at 1080i with my basic cable that I use primarily for the internet and for TV in the kids rooms (as of now I have SD DirecTV... will order 1080P HD DirecTV before Football starts back). This TV puts my 32 LG (1 1/2 yrs old) to shame. PS3 Blue Ray is so clear and realistic, it takes getting used to. I have had no TBE problems watching NBA playoffs or PS3 gaming UT3/GTA IV). TV took about 2 weeks to deliver after purchase(I was advised via email that they were out of like new/refurbished units). CEVA Delivery called on a Monday morning at 8am and stated that they could deliver that day between 10am-3pm. I took off work to stay home for the delivery. They called back at 12:30 and stated that the TV was not put on the truck. I ended up traveling about 30 miles to their delivery site to pick the unit up myself as to not have to take another day off. I still gave the TV 5 stars despite the poor delivery service I encountered. NOTE: I kept the box just in case of any problems and will register the product with Samsung soon.

  5. This TV is beautiful. I was skeptical at first about the Auto Motion 120Hz system, but have yet to experience any problems. There is a "Demo" mode, which shows Auto Motion ON and Auto Motion OFF on two halves of the TV, allowing you to compare. The Auto Motion 120Hz had a slightly improved image on my up-converted DVD source, though it'll take a Blu-ray test to be sure.

The best part was when I hooked my computer up and output at 1920x1080. My desktop looked crisp and clean, and after playing Unreal Tournament I've decided that this TV will also be my new computer monitor.

Even standard definition DVDs (played in a Samsung up-converter) look beautiful. I watched an episode of House and nearly soiled myself. The contrast, brightness, and vivid colors (I've never seen such a blue sky) were breathtaking.

I recommend this TV for any gamer, A/V geek, or lover of high quality movies. It's definitely a steal at the price, as compared to the 8-series LCD panel Samsung put out recently (tip: don't buy TVs with the LED light source - you'll get seaming.)

  1. Just plugged in my new TV after reading glowing reviews around the web. The picture is great, the price is great. Unfortunately the sound sounds like it is coming out of a barrel. I'm sure the speakers are fine, but they are somewhere shoved up inside the set so that they sound like they are coming out of a tube. Just make sure you plan on buying a sound system for this one...

  2. This TV is fantastic as all have stated above... however a few things that are frustrating:
#1 - The TV only has one tuner built in - which means PIP only works when switching from other inputs. My old Sony had 2 tuners which was great for sports games and movies etc... I assumed without reading details this new TV would automatically have it.
#2 - Remote Control has more difficulty upclose but great range from a distance - maybe its my inability to point correctly...

Other than those simple items - this TV is awesome!

  3. From the AVS Forums. These sound settings will bring your sound to life.

    "Official LNXXA550 Calibration/Settings Thread"

A lot of people have used Rye82's audio settings and reported dramatic improvements:

    Mode: Custom
    SRS TruSurround XT: On
    Auto Volume: On
    TV Speaker: On

    (# of clicks):
    Balance: 0
    100Hz: 8 clicks right
    300Hz: 8 left
    1kHz: 4 left
    3kHz: 3 right
    10kHz: 5 right

Turn it up and enjoy the ride. . .Great Pic and more than adequate basic sound!

  4. Great picture quality and very good sound after performing the calibrations from AVS forums (both audio and video calibration).

  5. This TV is wonderful, my first generation HD-ready CRT RPTV finally bit it. I wanted to wait for the full digital switchover to occur before I bought my next tv, but it was not meant to be. After much research I chose this unit as it has a wonderful price/performance ratio among the top tier, 1080P candidates. I was looking for a good 50ish inch tv going into a very bright and sunny room for 70/20/10 TV/xbox/movie duty. $$$ / square inch cost of this unit is excellent, not much of a surcharge over the 46 inch unit which is nice. I did the audio and video tweaks outlined in AVS forum, the tv is just plain awesome.

  1. All of the other reviews cover pretty much all of the other "pros" for this TV and I agree with them 100%. I wanted to mention its quality for gaming.

I knew before I bought a new tv that me and my roomate would be using it alot for gaming on the xbox 360. I tried a couple of others with an 8ms response time and they just weren't quick enough. When I decided I was going to need something with 6ms or better I assumed I would have to spend a great deal more. Then I found this tv.

We play a variety of different types of games and all of them look and flow great. From Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 to racing games, sports games, and even GTA IV that just came out. In my experience there has been no delay from the controller to the screen and I couldn't be happier.

    Great deal. Buy it.

  2. After much research, settled on this LCD tv. I was not disappointed! Took it of the box and just attached my coax from my satellite service and voila the most beautiful picture appeared. The colors are spectacular and the sound clear and crisp. The black enclosure with the speakers at the bottom make for a good looking tv.

  3. Just purchased this HDTV 3 weeks ago and so far I have not been disappointed. Before this TV, I had a fifteen year old Toshiba and that was starting to go out. A few months ago, I started looking around for different Samsungs( I knew I wanted a Samsung because of their reputation for great HDTVs) Their were a few that I was looking at but wasn't thrilled with the prices. Finally, a couple months after my old TV started flickering, I started looking at HDTV sets again. I first found this set at Best Buy for 899. A couple days later I saw it at Circuit City for 799. After a few minutes of thinking, I ordered it online and picked it up. I have DirecTV(non HD, so far) and I also bought a DVD HD converter(also a Samsung). While the regular TV isn't perfect, it still looks really good. The DVD up converter is also really good. Very pleased with the TV and can't wait until I get more HD programming.

  4. Great image, easy to set up, well thought out inputs. Bought two. Amazon price excellent.

  5. You have to just love this tv. Hooked it up to the digital box and WOW what a picture. Glad I waited because it's a fabulous set.

  1. I struggled with TV options for almost 6 months - was ready to buy another set however when I went to purchase this model had just been launched and I was torn (it's a more expensive model, but was it a worthwhile investment?). A friend recommended I go to Best Buy and compare all the models I was considering - this one blew all the others away - including Sony! (though the Best Buy on 23rd in Manhattan did not have the Sony XBR model so I couldn't compare that). I still haven't used all the settings but the HD quality is incredible from the cable - haven't even tried blue ray yet but saw that in the store and it was pretty amazing as well.

Gripes: the glossy finish will show how much dust gathers in a very short period of time...if you're a neat freak you will find yourself wiping it off constantly. But it looks great otherwise.

Touch of Red: I was actually turned off by this but was pleasantly surprised at its subtlety in my living room.

Overall I'm very pleased with my purchase and Amazon's 30-day price guarantee got me an additional $200 back since I purchased!

  2. I looked around for a long time at many tvs. This is by far the best one I found for the price.

Circuit City, Best Buy and ultimate electronics sell it for right around $2100 (as of 5/10). I even tried getting a price match at the store and they said "no way". One sales associate showed me his screen and his cost was $1540. He would not even sell it for $1900!

Amazon had it for $1560 with free delivery (great and ahead of schedule, they even call you the day before and the day of. They also give you a tracking number) and no tax! Best deal!!

PS The TV is AWESOME!!!! NO REGRETS!!! A cool feature is RSS with the internet hooked to the TV. Research that a bit but is is nice.

  3. After months of research I decided to finally throw away my Sony Trinitron and buy a HD TV. I got this one based on specs, reviews and relatively low price vs. other 120Hz HD's, and I am really happy about my choice. This unit is just great, no complains at all. Among the pros, in addition to great picture quality, is that it is rather light for the size, and there is no need to buy an upconvert DVD to see your standard DVD's on it. I was somewhat worried about the red but it is subtle and it blends really well with wood furniture.

  4. After researching TV's for a couple of weeks, I was almost set on buying the LN40A550. But I went to do a visual comparison at BB and I was sold on this one. Even at that time I was going to wait few more weeks to buy until I saw the price and I had to get it right away.

After figuring out how to set it up with all my componants and programming the TV itself I was blown away at the clarity of the picture. Just watching a baseball game, it looked like the ball was coming at you.

  5. All of these reviews are spot on. While placing the order, I was skeptical of the low price and free shipping, but everything worked out perfectly, scheduling a time to be home from work to receive the shipment. Free shipping included White Glove, which I denied because I wanted to set it up myself.

I did the same thing as the other reviewer: I went to Circuit City and Ultimate Electronics saying I could get online for $1550, meet me halfway, and I'll give you $1800 right now. They both said no, we want $2100. The only con of ordering online is you have to wait a week, but to save $700+?? This is a no-brainer.

The TV itself is awesome. Sports-mode is so bright, it is nuclear. I was watching my Penguins dismantle the Flyers, and the brightness from the ice was so bright, I almost had to put on my sunglasses. I have yet to watch it at its peak with 1080p movies, and I cannot WAIT to get a bluray player. I might settle for an upconverting DVD player in the time being, as the only affordable, reliable Bluray on the market today seems to be a Playstation3, and I'm not playing games so this is not an option.

I have been looking at HDTV's for a few months and narrowed it down to this model. Buy this TV, and buy it from Amazon. You won't regret it!

  1. I have received this LCD 3 days ago and wanted to share my experience here. This is very nice and spectacular LCD available in the market. I have did a lot of research before buying this and compared with sony and sharp. I don't remember how many times I visited BestBuy to see the differnece between these 3 TVs. Finally I have voted for this TV and I am very happy with it now. I would recommend this TV. I don't want to talk about the Technical Stuff but this is worth spending this much money and Amazon's purchase was a breeze.I received this in 5 days after ordering.

  2. Shipper (CEVA) was superb...quick response, great communication and tv arrived a full 10 DAYS prior to quote from Amazon! CEVA even let me change shipping address mid-shipment w/o any issue or delay to shipment. They scheduled my appointment around MY availability and delivered on a Saturday. Total order went from purchase on Wednesday - to in my house and setup in my living room on Saturday. Professional delivery service and could not ask for more from them. Very accommodating.

TV is outstanding in both terms of external looks and actual display. When viewing a true 1080p image, makes HiDef look like Standard definitionin comparison. You can put your eye 1 inch from screen and not see any distortion. Amazing in terms of a 52" tv. Next level stuff.

  3. I purchased the Samsung LN52A650 1.5 months ago as soon as I saw that there was a firmware patch for the shut-off issue. We started experiencing the shut-off issue a couple of days after receiving the TV. I installed the patch and have not had the problem again since. (It's been 4 weeks since the patch.) The picture quality is fantastic. The local cable company HD service is 1080i and the picture is excellent. With Blu-ray discs the picture is stunning. We also use it for game play with a Playstation 3 and Wii. Works flawlessly and I have not seen a single hint of ghosting even with the fastest action games. I'm very pleased with the purchse, the Amazon price, and in-home delivery.

  4. I've had this tv for about a week now, it replaced a 1st generation Mitsu DLP. The picture quality is an order of magnitude greater, and I was already impressed by the 1080i on my wd-62525. The settings out of the box need to be adjusted; everything looks a little washed out/cartoony at first. However I found a great list of settings for close to reference quality picture. I've included them below my review if anyone else might want/need them.

Ceva's delivery service was excellent. They called me 2 days after I ordered the TV to schedule delivery, which was a week before Amazon showed the estimated delivery date. When it arrived, they took the TV out of the box, put it on my entertainment center, and patiently waited as I went through several screens to test the TV for any possible defects.

I will never buy electronics from a store again. And, as of right now, Amazon has a loyal customer for all my home theater needs. I would definitely recommend picking this TV up here if you're interested in buying it. On top of the great service, I couldn't get anyone to touch the price by close to $1000.

    Enjoy!

  5. Searching for the right HDTV took some time for me, roughly 1 year in the process. I ultimately chose the best HDTV: Samsung's LN52A650.

2007 models, both Sony & Samsung didn't seem to work out all of the kinks in their products. 120Hz refresh was ok on 2007 models, but overpriced. I chose the Samsung over the Sony for numerous reasons, but two main reasons: Styling and Price.

    Reason #1: Styling

As great as the Sony 52XBR4 was in reviews I just didn't like the glass bezel, just unattractive to look at. I particularly like the curve that Samungs have at the bottom of their TV's, distinctive and stylish, unlike a plain rectangular screen. The TOC is rather pleasant, not overwhelming, but just a hint of color.

    Reason #2: Price

Despite being a fan of Sony...Sony consistently sells their products at a premium. Samsung models typically are priced cheaper with just as many options as Sony tv's and it's no wonder Samsung is beating Sony; just look at the bestselling HDTV's here at Amazon.com.

  1. I usually write a long, extended review, but previous reviews have covered everything.

In short, the picture is just absolutely gorgeous. The price is extremely good also for 120hz TV. In case you are curious about the "Red Touch of Color" though, you can barely see it. It is not as obvious as some pictures have illustrated. In a darker room, you cannot see the red tint of color at all. The design itself makes this TV very attractive.

The ONLY thing that annoys me is the remote control. Everything about it is great except for the wheel. It can be useful, but it is very situation. Often time I consider the wheel a nuisance than helpful due to sensitivity of the wheel.

Lastly, I *used* to have TV randomly resetting problem. Firmware update took care of it, and I've never had any problem ever since.

If you're looking for a TV, buy this! I've done a lot of research myself (I'm very picky), and I don't regret choosing this television at all.

    Side notes:
    1. Amazon.com is great! Price is a lot lower than retail, but it still offers 30 days low price guarantee on their own price. I called in 5 times and got over 250 bucks back! (If you bought it recently, be sure to keep checking the updated price).

    2. Don't get ripped off and buy Monster HDMI cable. A little research will inform you that a 10 dollars cable will be as good as 150 dollars extra cable. It's all digital signal. 0s and 1s. All or nothing.

  2. I love this TV. The picture is so much brighter than my old Toshiba DLP - I can even watch it in bright sunlight without closing the blinds. This TV has a red-tinted bezel, which some may not like but I think it looks sharp. The screen is slightly glossy, which I find appealing. 120Hz means that it supports 5:5 pulldown, so if you have a compatible blu-ray player such as the ps3, you can watch movies without dropped frames. I wasn't sure if 46" would be big enough, but it fits perfectly in my mid-sized living room.

This TV is a little expensive, but the price is dropping all the time. It also makes other TVs look dull, so prepare to cringe when you go to a friends house. :)

A great TV - a little pricey, but well worth it. If you want to see how it looks before you buy, check it out at a local electronics store. They will usually let you play with all the settings so you can determine if it meets your needs.

  3. I purchased this model shortly after it was first available from Amazon upgrading my older Phillips 55" rear projection 1080i capable TV. I have now owned it for a month. I've used it with basic (non-HD) cable, basic Tivo viewing (again, non-HD), upscaled DVD viewing, HD-DVD viewing, and blu-ray viewing. I've paired it with a Yamaha 3000 soundbar. My entertainment watching has never been better.

Like many people I did a lot of research before dropping this kind of money on a new TV and, also like many people, it eventually came down to the Samsung TV or one of the Sony XBRs. IMO these are the only competitive mid-range/high end flatscreens to consider for purchase. Because of the Burn in issue (which is not as bad as it was in earlier generation Plasmas) I never considered a plasma TV, though they are a little more inexpensive and often have at least as good a picture as the LCD TVs.

As you've probably read outside of the several hundred dollar premimum for the Sony brand, the primary difference is that the Samsungs have a shiny screen so in high light rooms there can be some reflection vs the matte XBR screens. I generally can control the light levels while I'm viewing the TV so the vibrancy of the Samsung in mid/low light conditions made the choice easier.

I was originally going to go with a 4671f until I saw the "new" 46A650 model and decided to get the new version instead. There have been some visual quality improvements with the second generation of the motion tracking technology which goes a long way to eliminating the blurring and object duplication (the "Triple Ball Effect" or TBE). It isn't entirely gone but for a "normal" person who isn't examining the visuals in minute detail; it is effectively a non-issue now. I've seen a couple sutters where the image seems to "jump" but in my opinion this is more related to the media/movie than a problem with the TV.

If you ask someone who says that the TV has a stuttering problem they will usually only be able to point to one scene in a movie or two where the stuttering occurs ("Check the intro sequenece in Blue Planet from 00:01:23 to 00:01:24! This TV stutters like mad!").

I contend that normal people can handle a 1 second stutter every 100 hours of viewing :)

    *VISUALS*

The visuals on blu-ray content are often jaw dropping. This is to be expected with something like "Planet Earth" which is built around its lush visuals, even in non-HD, but even some scenes in movies that I wouldn't consider prime HD material I am often very impressed (there are some garden scenes in "Walk Hard" that are eye-popping!).

Of course the non-HD experience isn't incredible, but I'm happy that it is at least on par with my old TV. Eventually I may decided to upgrade to HD cable and Tivo but my main focus is improving my movie watching, not necessarly making CSI or American Idol look better.

Finally, I have three spots in my TV room where people watch TV from. With some LCDs if you get too far off center from the set then the screen dims and the vitality of the colors bleeds down. That is not a problem at all with this LCD.

    *PHYSICAL*

On the hardware end there are plenty of inputs for HDMI and any other connection type you can think of. I have a full set of components and everything plugs right in and works well.

I was a little wary of the "Touch of Color", but in a darker room it is not very obtrusive since it fades quickly to deep red which looks black in lower light. I think the red highlight actually looks really cool! It is much more pleasing to my eye then just a plain black or silver.

I am so pleased with this TV I can barely describe it! Physically it looks stunning, visually it is one of the best out there.

    *CONS*

    Not everything is rosy though.

There was a problem with some of the original models where the TV would randomly shutoff (mine included, though I did not encounter it often). This is easily fixed with a firmware update available off Samsungs site and is, presumably, pre-loaded on all the new sets being manufactured.

The remote is not great. It has the buttons you want to do everything but the jog/shuttle wheel implementation they used is too sloppy and leads to a lot of inaccuracy. I over came this by purchasing a Logitech Harmony One remote but for using the PS3 I still have to resort to the included remote (the PS3 remote is bluetooth and doesn't work with the Harmony remote).

One of the biggest problems that I have is that the TV is meant to be best viewed in lower light settings, however the labels for the controls on the TV itself can't be seen except if bright light.

Even worse they are very sensitive touch controls so when I want to turn the TV off manually I often end up changing the channel instead because I miss the "off" touch region by a little. Then I either have to turn on a bunch of lights to change the channel again and then turn it off or I have to dig out the remote to change the channel and turn the set off. This is so annoying that I've resorted to keeping a small keychain flashlight beside the TV just so I can see these stupidly subdued labels.

Finally, the software/interface for adjusting the settings on the TV is slow and unresponsive. This is excrabited by the crappy remote. It seems that moving through the menus and selecting settings is very laggy, and I found that I often ended up selecting items I didn't want because of the three second lag between pressing the button and actual acceptance of the setting selection. This is also pretty minor but frustrating non-the-less during the first few days when you're tweaking settings.

The problems I have with the set are so small I think I can fully justify the 5 star rating but the labeling on the controls is VERY frustrating and the remote feels all but useless if you have to rely on the Jog wheel.

    EDIT: One last thing:
    *SHIPPING*
I was VERY VERY VERY disappointed in the shipping company (Eagle/CAVA) used to ship my TV. When the driver got to my home he proceeded to DRAG my brand new $2600 TV (after tax) by the banding straps. Bouncing it off the back of the truck onto the street, then DRAGGING it onto the curb, BOUNCING it again, then dragging up my driveway, BOUNCING it UP the three stairs to my door and finally dragging into the living room.

I had thought that I was getting white glove delivery but the driver turned to leave as soon as he bounced the TV into my viewing room. I asked him to help me at least lift it out of the box. So he tears indacriminately into the box with his knife and starts trying to lift the TV out by pressing on the corner of the screen itself, not the bezal!

I was shocked. I will NEVER do business with a company that employs this shipping company again. The callous attitude of the driver and the lack of respect for my package was horrid.

  4. The wait is definitely worth it for this TV, Originally I was debating on getting the XBR5 series or the 71 series, and the only reason why I was holding back because of the shutting off issue. But once I heard there was a firmware update about fixing the problem. I've finally decided to get it, I mean worse comes to worse I could just return it. Once I had the issue of the LCD shutting off on me, I immediately installed the firmware. Two weeks later, I haven't had any issues at all.

This TV is amazing, every time I either watch a Bluray movie, play XBOX or PS3, or currently watch the NBA playoffs. I used to go to my buddy's house to watch the game on his XBR5, but the funny thing now is he is at my house all the time watching the games. Even he admitted that he likes my TV more than his.

There is only one complaint I have with this is the remote, I really don't like the wheel thing on it, its not very accurate and its annoying. But don't let this stop you from getting this TV though. I also forgot to mention that I use this as a computer monitor, I'm connecting my PC with a DVI to HDMI cable and the awesome part was all i had to do was select the PC mode, and it auto adjusted everything for me.

So bottom line, if your looking for an amazing bright and crisp picture, get this right away you wont regret it.

  5. Viewing wise,More than met my expectations. Red tone color of set looks great .

  1. After much research, I decided on this TV. I ordered from Amazon on 4/30 with an est delivery date of 5/9 and, CEVA delivered it on 5/7 (free white glove service). The TV has a fantastic picture, TV's setup/config is very intuitive, and the sound is surprisingly good for a 10wx2 TV speaker system. There are plenty of connections, too. Currently the devices I've connected to the TV are a cable HD/DVR via HDMI, a progressive scan DVD player via component video, and a ReplayTV 5040 DVR via component video. I've routed the TV sound out to my Denon amp, even though it's standard stereo. My only real criticism, and a minor one at that, is the size of the remote which initially seems *huge*! I'm quickly getting used to it though, as the layout is quite intuitive. The remote is also backlit, a real plus when watching in a dark room!

When researching HDTVs, I also considered the 650 and 750 series and compared all to Sony LCDs, but I found the picture on the Samsungs to be *much* better. Although I would have liked an ethernet connection (on the 750 series), I really didn't want the high-gloss planels on the 650 and 750 series. (My viewing room is quite bright during the day, and although the glossy LCDs do seem to have an improved picture quality, the added glare turns that into a big negative for me.) Initially I intended to go for a 120Hz set, but as I did more research, I decided that was a feature I could forgo. The HD picture from the cable box is phenomenal. I notice no ghosting, graininess or pixelation. Even standard def (stretched) is fine to watch. I expect HDMI-CEC will be a very handy feature as I upgrade components down the road, but for now, I'm unable to make use of it.

In sum, I'm very, very pleased with this TV, with CEVA's white glove delivery service, the price I paid, and the 12-month no interest deal I got using Amazon's credit card. I would definitely buy this TV again and have already recommended it to friends who are currently HDTV shopping.

  2. I was very apprehensive buying a LCD TV on the internet. I was bothered about dead pixels (though I hear these are no longer the kind of problem these used to be), getting an inferior quality/scratched unit etc. etc. And man I am glad the way it all turned out. The shipping may be a slight problem - these freight companies just like the movers are so hard to tame!!!

    Features/results I liked:
    1. Color/contrast are outstanding (yes it beats my friend's much more expensive Sony 'x' series)
    2. Back light can be made very bright indeed and the contrast holds up to these high levels just so well
    3. Menus are iconic and rich text based and quite intuitive

    Features I didn't:
    1. I find myself fumbling a lot trying to switch between the sources. I wish this was more intelligent. Why can't this TV just identify the active sources and just play them all one by one and let me choose?
    2. Why can't I switch on the TV on with a source preselected? If my home theater can switch on on the Aux mode, why can't this TV be switched on on HDMI1?
    3. There are interdependencies between menu items. If one part of the menu is selected one way, certain other parts would appear disabled! This is outrageous (Strangely this applies to DNIe, one of Samsung's hotly advertised features)
    4. If I use component cable, the non HD channels actually look better than when I use the HDMI cable. Where are all the up-conversion algorithms?
    5. The speakers are OK but by listening to them, I always get the feeling that these manufacturers force you to buy home theaters!

My overall view. Great buy looking at the competition it has!

  3. There's not much detail I can add to what's already been written, so I'll just add one more '5 star' review, and a few brief/random thoughts.

Like several other reviewers here, I did quite a bit of big-box store shopping before ordering this unit. I'm pretty particular about my electronics, so I feel I made the best choice with this model. Sony has some catching up to do now. ;-)

After watching BBC's Planet Earth Series on a standard def TV, and then finally getting to experience it on this TV, I finally understand all the praise over HD. In a word, S-T-U-N-N-I-N-G.

The built in speakers are terrible; very anemic and tinny. In this day and age, most folks are setting up with audio equipment, so, I guess the built-in speakers are for the most part, going to be overlooked.

Another complaint to lodge, but not the fault of the TV: standard def cable picture is awful; blurry and over saturated. Some channels look fine, most are less-than-pleasing. I'm starting to get accustomed to it, but overall, YUK.
FYI: You can bypass your SD cable box to get over-the-air HD channels (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, etc)--just connect the cable directly to the TV. I get about 8 HD channels on Comcast. I also get pay-per-views and on-demand people are watching in my neighborhood on the upper channels. BONUS!

  4. You can't beat this for the price. I was pricing out older models at the box stores (only 15,000:1 contrast and 8 MS refresh rate) and even those were still more expensive. The order went well and the delivery was faster than Amazon predicted.

The picture on the TV is amazing, although you can notice shadows on fast movement if you are viewing the tv from the side. Other than that, the tv is wonderful!!!!

  5. I've had the Samsung LN40A550 for 2 weeks now and absolutely love this TV.

Delivery was hassle free and quicker than Amazon predicted.

I'm using an HDMI connection between my Comcast cable box/DVR and the TV and the picture quality is spectacular! The sound quality is perfectly acceptable as well. Although I have the TV connected to a home theater sound system, I only run that when watching a movie or sporting event. I see no need to have it on for regular TV programming, since the sound from this TV is very good.

I agree with the accolades others have given to the Samsung LN40A550; it is truly exceptional. Thanks Amazon for an great deal on an excellent HDTV!

  1. I've had the 550 LCD TV for a month now and it's absolutely amazing. I have been doing a lot of research for the past year in trying to find a really nice HDTV for the right price. I had my heart set on the LN4665F model for a while but I just couldn't convince myself to pay the high price for it. I almost fell out of my seat when I saw the new 550 model and when I compared it to the 4665F, I knew I had to purchase it. There are three distinct features that I was impressed with for the 550 model; The Contrast Ratio is 30,000:1 compared to 15,000:1, Response Time is 5ms compared to 8ms and the overall weight is 20 pounds lighter.

I ordered it on Amazon but through Electronic Expo and I was a bit worried since I wasn't familiar with them but they came through. It arrived a few days after it was shipped and the delivery guy was nice enough to wait at my place till I got home from work to let him in. I opened the box and lifted the TV on my own onto my stand. I hooked up my Xbox 360 and the settings were flawless. I also watch HD movies and the picture quality is outstanding.

I use the speakers from the TV and they work just fine. I do plan on getting a surround sound system but until then the speakers will do. The remote is easy to use and the settings work perfectly out of the box.

The price has drop recently and you just can't get a better deal for this TV. Act fast before they raise the price. Overall this is an excellent TV with stunning quality and it has lived up to my expectation. What are you waiting for? Go order it already!

  2. Coming off a 36 inch tube- I just sit there in awe when I watch it. I did some minor calibration and the picture is perfect. Amazon and Ceva was awesome in assisting with some minor shipping issues. Plus don't forget the 30 day price guarantee.

I keep looking for a blur with sports and fast paced movies and have a very hard time finding it. I have a friend with an older model with the 120Hz- but I can't notice a difference between ours- actually I think mine looks better. The speakers are somewhat cheap for the tv- but if you have a surround sound system it wont be an issue. You can also make some adjustments to the speakers to make them more acceptable. I have no problem with the speakers when watching the news or your average tv shows. HD- wow- I never knew tv could look like this- sometimes I feel its to perfect. I will either get an upscaling dvd or wait for a cheaper blue ray player to come out to get the full benefit out of this tv.

Anyway- The TV, Amazon and Ceva are all class acts. If this tv fits your budget, don't hesitate to buy it. And don't bother wasting your money on Monster Cables- there are several hdmi cables out there that do the same thing for 1/10th the price.

A great bang for your buck- hands down.

    Happy Shopping.

  3. I finally decided to go HD and, after reading the Amazon customer reviews for a number of 40 to 50" LCD products, I purchased the Samsung In46A550p from Aamzon. The delivery service showed up in a few days and had the unit up and running in about 10 minutes. I had previously upgraded to DirectTV HD so I had HD signals to test with.

The picture is absolutely beautiful. Great colors and contrast and the screen shows essentially none of the reflection from large side windows that bothered me on my 27" CRT TV.

I am a photographer and displayed some of my pictures using the USB port. Again great color and very easy to use.

This afternoon I will buy a $35 up converting DVD player from Sam's Club. I will wait to buy a Blu-ray player until Netflix has more HD titles and the players come down a bit in price.

I would recommend this unit to anyone who has a room large enough for a 46" screen. In a smaller room perhaps the 40" would be better.

  4. I have been looking for a right LCD TV for more than a month. After making bunch of trips to CC and BB, I narrowed it down to Sharp/Samsung/Sony. After comparing the features, pitcture quality and cost, I felt Samsung was definitely a better choice.

This is my first HDTV and I am very happy and satisfied with the TV. Picture is sharp and clear with good black levels. The non-glossy screen is pretty good. The sound quality out of the box is decent as well. The remote and the menu navigation is simple and straight forward. Its a great value for the money spend.

  5. This is a good television for the price I paid. I got it for around $1500 with shipping. The image quality is good but I have found that different networks have different signal qualities. The unit states that it has a auto-levelling sound feature. I have not found that it works. Overall this is a good television and I would recommend it.
