  1. I have mounted on my wall and use as my pc moniter. so far so good

  2. It was cheap when I got it at circuit city for $400, but then what could I really expect? It's 768p at least. It has all the connections I needed plus an easy selector on the remote, and my Harmony picked it up just fine with full function.

What I do like about it is the treatment of the widescreen, it's got like 5 different variations for the screen's aspect ratio, not including "normal." It's pretty bright, and I had to turn it down a little to get better contrast. I use it in a sun room, so it's great with the full wall of windows it sits opposite from. I also use it as a monitor for an internet PC, which works out alright. The speakers aren't anything impressive, but if you use it as a main system, you'd probably want to have a separate speaker system anyway. It's also got HDMI input, which is great, but I won't be using any HDMI devices with it . . . yet perhaps. My ps3 works for it, but I got that on my main TV.

Cons? Plenty. The speakers do have a tendency to have a lot of distortion during DVD's and sound really bad at high volume. The biggest complaint I have is the black levels and the contrast, which were pretty bad. Turning down the brightness improved upon it a good bit, but not by much. I have a Viewsonic PC monitor with 1000:1 and it has FAR better contrast than this, which is also supposedly 1000:1. When hooked up though the VGA or DVI cables, it works great for some reason, but plugged up though anything not HDMI, DVI or VGA, it looks pretty bad, even on component. I don't have an HDMI device, but use the PC as the DVD player instead of the DVD player I had for it, since the component connections looked bad. There's no digital audio, but then again I'm not using it for a major media center.

It's good for a small TV and works well enough, especially for its price. I have it on a swivel so that I can see it somewhat from the kitchen and the sunroom, so it fills its purpose. I haven't had any other problems with it that other users have mentioned. It's definitely NOT what you'd want to have as a main TV. I like Viewsonic, but this TV is nothing to drop your jaw at. I'd recommend Westinghouse's 42" LCD, which is native 1080p. This ViewSonic gets the job done and for a great price. Just be aware it's not of the greatest quality, so don't expect it, but you shouldn't expect much even for $600.

  3. I have it mounted on the wall and it is both a TV and PC monitor for me. It does not pick up broadcast HD and there's nothing specific in the manual about that. So it just might be me, but I don't know how to receive the signal. Also, it either loses touch with the remote a lot or the remote eats up batteries like nobody's business, because it seems all too often the remote doesn't get through to the TV. It works again after I put in new batteries.

  4. The Viewsonic is an inferior product and the company knows it. Their is absolutely NO customer support. It appears to be a good value at first but, when it inevitably screws up(just after the warranty expires, hmmmm!)
and they simply say ,sorry I can't help you.Congratulations, you now are the proud owner of a $700 coat rack. Good value.

This product is trash. DON'T BUY

  5. Orginally I bought this based on Viewsonic's reputation as a monitor company. I've had several Viewsonic monitors and always loved them. As a TV I'm not so crazy about the product.

When I first received my tv, and this was our first lcd tv, I had to call customer support and they were great. At one point they thought it was a defective product and were ready to immediately ship a replacement out and pick the current one up, until we figured out the problem. I have no issue with the support, which was based in the USA.

My only issue with the tv developed with time. When switching from DVD to TV as an input mode, the input menu was difficult to read from the couch so we'd have to get up to see the menu. Also, the remote sensor often didn't work properly after about a year, and it would often take multiple attempts to finally get the input menu to appear.

The quality of the picture was good, but nothing compared to the Sony which I just replaced this tv with. Still, for the price, it was a great tv with the exception of that pesky input menu inconsistency. I originally gave it 3/5 stars, but it is more like 3.5/5 stars after a year. Service was 5/5 stars.

  1. It was showing a demo DVD in progressive scan mode and some basic analog cable signals. I bought it because it was in my price range and it had what appeared to be the best picture among the other cheapy plasmas on display and it did not have the visible integrated speakers. I wanted a very clean and simple look and did not want the extra bulk of integrated speakers. I do wish they had added some wire guides or something as it is difficult to hide the cables coming down from the back. The remote also appears rather weak and flimsy, it was probably meant to be replaced by a Universal remote.

It took me a few days of tuning before I finally got the picture to my liking. I tested with some anamorphic DVDs and initially the image was sub par, decent contrast between darks and lights, but blacks appeared to be washed out with no detail and quite a bit of contour banding. The lights were still very nice. This was using 480i and S-Video from a standard DVD player. I then switched to a component cables and turned on progressive scan

Image quality improved, with bright colors details standing out vividly. I tested with Moulan Rouge and Hero (the Jet-Li original DVD Chinese release) both have some spectacular complex scenes... Both looked very good but I still thought the darker shades still lacked a lot of detail. On a hunch I bought some really expensive true 75ohm components cables... and bingo, suddenly darks came alive. I tested with Matrix and Heat, both containing a lot of dark scenes... though the blacks are still not up to the quality of Panasonic's Real Black Drive system. It was very acceptable to me.

Contrast ratio is stated at 1000:1, Compared to Panasonic's claimed 4000:1 it is noticeably dimmer. If I had a little more money I would have bought the Panasonic EDTV equivalent. But the Sylvania branded Funai Plasma is still a decent plasma definitely better than the AKAI, Daewoo, Gateway models I looked at. If you have the extra $500-$1000 dollars go with the Panasonic, JVC or Mitsubishi EDTV, but if your budget constrained, this plasma, with the proper set up, will provide decently.

I can't comment on it's performance with HDTV signals, but HDTV looks good on almost everything.

  2. I found the TV was easy to setup. I think the picture quality is excellent. I have two issues with TV. The Standard 5W speaker are not just bad they are an total embarrasement. I can't believe someone would build a $2k TV with such bad audio. Be preparded to invest in a home theater system. The good picture is just nothing worth without the sound. I got me a Bose 321 and now I'm really happy!

I am still struggeling finding out the remote programming code for the TV. None of the codes provided by Bose seem to be working. I called Funai customer service and they told me to try Sylvania, Funai and Emersons codes as well, but still no success.

  3. we bought this tv after looking at a ton of tv's, the 42 in size was perfect for what we needed. since i am not going to paying to recieve HD, i figured for the money this was perfect for us, we paid 1299.00 andanother two hundred for a decent surround sound which is a must. it was easy to setup, you need component cables to hookup DVD, we are on sattelite so we get a good picture, the sound is horrible as stated in other reviews, besides you got to have surround if you get a big screen. stil haven't found the remote code so i can program one remote. if anyone ever figures this out please add to review.

  4. We bought this TV in February of 2006 and have had it for a year now. It was side by side with a Panasonic HDTV and the picture was comparable. Maybe a 5% difference in sharpness but once we got it home you couldn't tell any difference. My brother has a 46" Samsung HDTV CRT and the picture on my Sylvania is hands down better. Of course thats comparing CRT to Plasma. I am running Digital cable with the HDTV package thru it and the picture is great.

Cons: - Speakers are horrible but I have it hooked up to surround sound.
    - The remote is to basic. It has everything you need to run the TV and adjust it but it just seems cheesy.
    - No HDMI connection
