5 comments about LG Electronics 50PC5D 50" 720p Plasma HDTV.
- In a nutshell -- looks elsewhere. That's my opinion after owning this model. Why? The main reason is that HDMI on the 50PC5D is not done right.
I own this same model, LG 50PC5D, but the in-Korea version (just 1 input HDMI in the back).
Through HDMI, you will notice a water-colored look to your standard DVDs, and other issues at HD resolutions (due to what's called false contouring/banding) and problems with 1080i input. You will also see a lot more image retention problems. HDMI on this model is screwed.
The only solution is to use other inputs, like component.
In this digital age, we expect the digital input, HDMI, to work properly. When I send a signal through HDMI from my PS3, it can't do the 1080i signal right. At first look, it seems fine, until you check text and the image up close. You will see a jump in the characters every few seconds. This only happens at 1080i (not 720p).
Here is a Google video of the problem, which is really noticable on the PS3 menu screen. Notice the pulse every so often, and lines that jump:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2401674401223499446
There is also a lot of problem with image retention on this model, but that's mostly through HDMI (no component).
HDMI through this TV also seems to bypass the internal circuitry that helps clear up banding/false contouring. I have a lot of this when going through HDMI. It isn't a problem when watching TV station content, or when I use other inputs than HDMI. When using the HDMI input, however, my PS3 menu looks noticably different at all resolutions (from banding/false contouring). Some people call this banding/false contouring a "watercoloring" effect.
My only option was to try component inputs. Those worked very well, and the image looks great, but I lose certain functionality of my PS3, like standard DVD upscaling through HDMI, and Full RGB.
LG has been to my house 5 times to work on these different issues, and changing internal circuit boards didn't solve the problem. The service guy was stumped, took videos of the problem, and said he's passing it up the chain to the techs above him.
When I use component inputs (I had to buy the PS3 component out module) these problems go away, and the TV looks really good. So I use component. I ALSO HAVE FAR FEWER IMAGE RETENTION ISSUES THROUGH COMPONENT on this TV. Odd as it is, it's very, very true.
LG seems to have problems with HDMI on this model. If you are able, try the Component inputs, and forget about HDMI. The difference is night and day.
On another note, I had a buzzing problem with this TV. It made a very loud buzz that was annoying. They came out and added some kind of pads behind the circuitboards, and the noise was cut down by maybe 70%. It's still not perfect, but it's livable.
I wanted to trade this in and get a refund, but LG Korea refused, because I bought it at an LG store.

- I just got mine about 2 weeks ago and love it. I AM NOT a gamer and use it for hi def cable and dvds. This TV makes analog signals look great and the hi def is crystal clear. I had a problem with the HDMI connection but once connected to RGB it is working great. (I also had problems with HDMI on my older Toshiba 50" and in this case I think it is a cable issue.) Sound is also good. I would definitely buy this set again. I have had no problems with image retention but am careful to try to maximize the image on the screen which is easy with the ratio control. Overall 5 stars for me.
- My husband and I purchased this product in June, 2007. From the time we connected the set there was a problem with the screen. Our set has a thin black horizonal line thru middle of the screen. We were instructed to contact LG for warranty. LG told us to contact their local contracted service company. The service company has been out twice and has changed 3 boards and we still have the line. LG has been uncooperative about replacing the TV. It has not worked since DAY 1 !
- Perfect. The image on this TV is amaizing, as good as the real high dollar sets, better than most. NO HDMI issues on mine what so ever.
- I did so much research on plasmas before buying my first one. We have a $6,500 TV rear projection here that is top of the line... but the non-HD channels look horrible. I've also owned LCDs made by olevia and the non-HD channels look horrible. I think this is the norm with HDTVs. The problem is, most cable providers only offer around 25 channels in HD. The LG has an XD Engine that makes most of these non-HD shows on digital cable look near-HD. Some channels for some reason don't look that good, but most look amazing. The reason I chose the LG originally was because I came up on a price I could not turn down, but if I could choose again, I would buy this same Plasma. The quality is really good, the price is the best and I have had none of the problems listed on other reviews. It's a beautiful TV (glossy black) and I'm confident you would be happy with your purchase, unless you're some TV affeccianado then you should probably spend the $4,500 on the real high end stuff.

- I bought my TV and was very pleased with it until this week when the picture stopped working after owning it for only 18 months. The sound will come through, but there is no image. The product comes with a 1 year warranty, and I didn't buy an extended warranty. However, I did expect for the TV to work for more than 18 months.
Additionally, in looking through my paperwork, I realized why the price was better from Amazon than from local electronics stores. The TV is from Canada and not from the US.
Needless to say, I am disappointed in the performance of my Samsung TV.
- We were very happy with this TV's design, features and performance. However the screen has stopped working after 17 months' use. Unfortunately not up to our expectations for a Samsung.
- We purchased this tv 15 months ago. My husband fell in love with it until 3 weeks ago. Tv picture went out but the sound was still there. We didnt purchase the extended warrenty. We contacted samsung and they really dont care. Finally we had a service rep come out for 200.00 but he only charged us 100.00. He told us that our T con board was broke and it would be 1200.00 dollars to repair. He then continued to tell us that that they didn't make the t con board for this TV anymore, so basically we should get a new tv or something comparable from samsung. Samsung has given us the run around. I am very disgusted with there service. I will never buy a samsung again. Oh and by the way we threatend to go to our tv channels for help and report samsung and tuesday they are coming to repair our tv. Oh they found the part.
- I went to many local stores to learn which LCD's were considered the "best". Samsung was in the top three. Have had it less than a year and half and motherboard is blown. No picture, just sound. Motherboard has taken 5 weeks so far to come in (still not here). Seems like parts are hard to come by.
- I bought this TV 2 years ago from another store (their initials are BB) and was very happy with the picture and sound. Last week I had to take the TV off my wall to hook up another HDMI for my Blu-Ray player. When I turned the TV back on the screen was cracked and the picture was out. I have a 4 year extended warranty with "BB," but they told me that the warranty doesn't cover cracked screens. I now have a $2200 paperweight.
Bottom line: The TV has a great picture but is obviously very fragile. DO NOT get an extended warranty from BB. This and probably most any other "extended" warranty will only cover very technical problems, not easily cracked screens.

5 comments about Panasonic TH-42PX25U/P 42-Inch High-Definition Plasma TV.
- I purchased this plasma TV through Amazon 4 months ago. The transaction and shipping went very smoothly. I also purchased the wall mounting bracket through Amazon (an excellent value for only $150).
The TV is great -- excellent picture and great audio for those of you who do not use their surround sound system every time the set is on. However, a problem recently surfaced a few days ago: When playing DVDs on the Component 1 channel, the picture on the screen is no longer centered -- it is offset by about 20% to the left side. After trying to remedy the problem myself, I contacted Panasonic Customer Service (be prepared to wait at least 20-30 minutes on the phone before being connected to a representative). After explaining the problem, the rep indicated it would warrant a service call by a repair person (as of this writing, the appointment is scheduled within the next few days) Luckily, the warranty covers in-house repairs for one year, but you do have to remove the TV from the wall mount yourself so it is accessible to the repair person.
I'll admit I'm a bit skeptical about the reliabilty of the TV now, especially since it developed this problem within 4 months. I'm not a fan of extended warranties (very expensive for this TV, considering an extra year of coverage through Panasonic costs around $400), but I may have to purchase one if any additional problems surface.
Hopefully, the problem with my Panasonic is a rarity. I expected better performance from this expensive purchase. Time will tell.
- I am thrilled with this TV. I have a small apartment and the screen size is just right. Even the non HD picture is fantastic which is important because there are not that many HD broadcasts yet. My only complaint is that the sound is somewhat muffled on HD broadcasts. I plan on purchasing a separate amp, etc. I have purchased a Panasonic HDMI dvd player and dvd's are fantastic. I also have the cable company's HD DVR service. Once I get the sound system it should be perfect.
- Plasma buyers beware. Before you plunk down the BIG bucks for a plasma TV, look for other ways to spend $ around your house or take a vacation instead. Plasma TVs are underwhelming when all is said and done. Wide-screen programming is virtually non-existent, and resolutions are awful when you try to watch converted analog signals or stretched screens, also very dissapointing to view the dead-zone sidebars when you can't fill the screen. I spent 4Gs on this Panasonic and two months later the entire image skewed off the frame, needed a technician to reprogramme the bios (on site), ughhh, after hours of wasted support calls to both Panasonic and to my cable TV provider (both apparently ignorant about the issue). Wide screen TVs look best in the store.
- I have had my set for about 2 weeks now, and I am blown away by it's contrast and resolution.
This is my second set...the first set arrived and when I plugged it in, all I received was a blinking power light---turns out it has something to do with the power supply---according to Panansonic.
I use Radio Shack 'rabbit' ears for my reception and receive all four of the major networks and OPB in HD---Monday Night Football in HD is amazing! With the 'rabbit ears' I also receive all four major networks in SD---but why go back?
DVD's seem to look better on the Plasma than on my last Mitsubishi tube set---even thugh there is only 480 lines of resolution. I haven't tried the HDMI input yet, but others seem to be impressed by it.
I am using component video for my DVD and run the sound through Yamaha Audio/Video controller, Adcom amplifiers, and Polk Audio speakers.
The only bummer is that when the speakers on the Plasma are turned off, you can't adjust the 'volume level' using the Plasma remote---you just get a message saying 'speakers off'---you should be able to turn off the speakers and then have the audio out from your Plasma become a 'line out' so to speak---so you can control the audio levels of your surround system, when watching TV by using the volume on the Plasma remote control---why should I have to 'select' receiver and then adjust the volume?---heck that was available on my first Mitsubishi set 16 years ago.
Anway, minor complaint....all in all a fantastic set, that I would recommend to anyone---and a great bargain too!
- Bought this TV about 3 months ago and love it. Super HD quality. No problems with setup. Image and sound are great, nice and crisp in both regards. Photos from SD camera cards are easily viewable. Overall very happy with the purchase.

- I just got it up and working, what a great picture, I have been looking at Plasma's for a while and this one looks better than many I have looked at, at close to twice the price. I might buy another one for my bed room. A plus
- This TV(and all other Polaroid TV's that I have) perfroms great. I used to buy Toshiba only and pay twice as much. I have had no problems or complaints about this TV after using it for a few months.
- This television worked great for about 10 months. Then the pixels wore out and it was garbage. Although it came with a written warranty by Polaroid for a 1 year term, Polaroid claimed it was not their problem and referred us to a subsidiary. The subsidiary when contacted referred us back to Polaroid. After many phone calls and mounting frustration levels, Polaroid accepted responsibility, however we had to ship the tv back at our cost, etc. Polaroid was to replace the tv on the basis of "as good, or better." TV never came. Contacted Polaroid and they told us that they had sent it by Fed Express and told us to deal with Fed Ex. Fed Ex never found the TV. Polaroid said they would send another tv. TV came today with no power cord, no remote control, broken tv mount, scratched and dented. Bottom line, save time, money and frustration and go with another tv manufacturer. Update 1/22/08 Polaroid sent another replacement television; arrived today with a cracked screen!!! How do they stay in business!! OK, now it is February, and after sending us 4 broken TV's, Polaroid says they will refund our money. Unfortunately, our problems are not over. Refund never came. We call Polaroid customer service, they say, there was a processing error you should receive your check in 10-15 bus. days. Refund does not come. Call again and same scenario, i.e. processing error, another 10-15 business days......
- We bought this tv, it lasted 11 months. Remote stopped working. Little does one know that you need the EXACT model remote or the tv won't work not even getting up and working the controls on the tv itself. They don't know if they are even "making the remotes" anymore, they have a problem getting parts. We pushed this plasma tv out of the house, it has been 3 months now, we are told a different story each time we call as to why there are no remotes available. Finally, one tech told us that they try and order the remotes from a remote control distributor, the same one we tried, to get their OWN remotes! Well the remotes the distributor has won't work, yes, they are Polaroid remotes but NOT the exact one needed for this plasma tv.
Avoid Polaroid, it is a conglomerate that bought the polaroid name to distribute nameless chinese made tvs. It is a nightmare and a heart attack of frustation not to mention loss of money.
- We bought this TV a little over 2 years ago and guess what it just broke. We unfortunately did not buy the extended warranty so we are out of luck. My husband called Polaroid and they told him that they would fix it for 650 dollars plus us paying shipping and handling each way. That's a joke considering you can buy a brand new one for a little more than that these days. The picture went black in one area and the rest is a mix of red and blue. I am really disappointed and would give this zero stars if I could, when you spend 2000 on a tv you would expect it to last quite a bit longer than 2 years. this is a shame because it had a nice picture until this happened. if you do a google search on the internet you will see that many, many people have had problems with this tv and you should not waste your money.

- We did some comparison shopping for an HDTV at different stores and settled on the Audiovox for a couple of reasons. One, it was one of the least expensive HDTV's for a 37" and two, it's a 1080P resolution. Every other HDTV in this price range were 720P, which if it's a great price and it doesn't say 1080P, than it probably is 720P. You're paying a little more for 1080P than 720P but trust me it is well worth the extra money.
I have had this product for about four months now and have had no complaints. The size of the TV is just right for our small living room sitting about 8 feet away. I also like that the speakers for the TV are located on the bottom of the screen and not to the sides so it takes up less space. We watch blu-ray movies on our Playstation 3 and the picture quality is great. The only reason I give this TV 4 stars is because I have compared it to the Sony Bravia which is a TV that is nearly twice the selling price as the Audiovox. The Sony, also 1080P, has a little bit clearer picture with things that are out of focus when watching a movie (things that are in the background on the screen). I never noticed until I watched the Sony Bravia for a while. So, if your looking for a HDTV and have a small budget, I would definitly recommend the Audiovox.
