2 comments about Samsung LN19A650 19-Inch 720p LCD HDTV with RED Touch of Color.
  1. I had been reading many good reviews, for a long time,on Samsung's LNT1953H & LN19A330. The latter being a discontinued item. This set was going to be used in a kitchen and ocassionally on a deck. My last 15" LCD (non HD) had a fair picture but I wanted something better. The reviews led me to the Samsung since it had a built in HD tuner and most people felt the SD quality was "good".
I purchased the A650 model and so far am MORE than pleased. Don't let the "Touch of Color" deter you. This set has only a slight red color. In fact the box calls it Rose/Black. I have to look hard to see it, and i think it adds a nice touch to the normal black border. The one negative aspect of the high gloss border is that it does reflect light from the room which can sometimes be distracting...not a deal breaker however.
It has a lot of features that I am not interested in such as being able to hook up to a PC, but the HD tuner is what caught my eye.
I am able to get 12 HD channels (no box)and the picture quality is outstanding. I remember reading a couple of years ago when I was buying my 61" HD set that someone wrote 'HD picture on anything smaller than 32" is not worth it since you do not see much of a picture quality change'. That statement is sooooo un-true. There is an amazing differance, even with this 19" set. The HD chanells are absolutely amazing and i am not new to HD. I have had a JVC 61" HD for two years.
The SD channels are very good also. Probably the best I have seen in any small set.
The set allows you to make all adjustments throught it's menu (obviously) but also allows you to do many things with macro buttons on the remote. i.e picture size, favorite channels, sound, etc... The manual is clear and concise as is the on screen menu. The only con I have is that the TV picked up all my cable channels (86) and most are duplicated in digital (another 86) and 12 HD channels. The problem is that you cannot name the channels in the channel listing menu. You can only name them if the channels are being received "over the Air". Through cable you cannot name them, so when you bring up the channel listings you only get their digital number; such as 201-122. I'm sure this is the same with all sets, not just Samsung. So you'll have to make your own program guide to know what staion that actually is.
It also comes with a wall mount fixed bracket. They say it is for concrete walls but I am sure you can use it anywhere. It won't allow you to move it right/left, but it's not bad for a fixed bracket. You attach it to the bottom of the stand, after you flip it up; and you can easily lift the TV off the bracket to move it to another location.
Other than that, it is a great set with great picture quality and I would highly recommend it.
If I could change my "rate stars", i would change it to 5!

  2. I just unpacked and set this TOC Samsung HDTV up. Very easy to do. Very pretty TV! I am using only an antenna that plugs into the back of this set, I do not subscribe to cable TV. I was surprised at the number of channels it receives but they are standard antenna channels. So, if you do not have cable do not believe you will get any cable channels, unless you subscribe. I am perplexed that this Samsung TOC model does not come up in a general search for HDTV's on Amazon. I only found it by accident because it is not pictured on the page with other Samsung models. The Red Touch is very nice, understated and barely noticeable so, do not let that stop you from buying this set. The picture on Amazon actually shows it to be redder than it really is. I actually purchased it for the red color because it's going in my kitchen but it honestly looks black--so I was a tiny bit disappointed. I watched it briefly and the all of the channels are so beautiful and clear that even watching a boring weather channel will be mesmerizing if you have not had HDTV before. All in all, I think it's a good buy and it seems that in all of my searches for an HDTV (months!!) Amazon really sells the HDTV's lower than anyone else--even lower than the big box stores. They are not giving them away but the prices are lower and you can always rely on their great service. I trust them more than other vendors because they have never let me down yet. I hope Amazon makes the Samsung TOC HDTV easier for buyers to find!

  1. For its price and for the output delivers , this is a great TV. This Model provides great color output and with a little bit of tuning , I was able to get amazing clarity and color differential. I bought this TV after a great deal of research and am happy to have picked this model.

  2. This TV is fabulous...I read all the other reviews before purchasing because we were definitely concerned with glare- as the TV is in our family room with a wall of windows. We've had absolutely no problem with glare at all- literally NO glare. The picture is great, very clear...especially with HD channels. We had been looking for a flat screen for years, and after all the research and looking- we're definitely more than satisfied with our purchase.

  3. I searched well over a month before deciding on this particular TV. One of the major factors was that it had to fit into a space no wider than 46 inches in my entertainment center. Most 46" TVs I looked at were too wide or too shy of the space I wanted to fill. Being about 45.5", this one fits perfect. It has a great picture as well. Of course, you do have to subscribe to an HD provider before realizing what a great picture it has. Of note, I found this model in some stores at a much higher price. This one was delivered and set up free of charge through Amazon. My husband and I couldn't be more pleased with the decision to purchase this TV.

  4. After several weeks of research and many years of waiting to finally buy an LCD TV, I finally decided on the 4669F. I bought it through Amazon, and couldn't have been happier with the transaction. The delivery company was great to deal with and everything went smoothly. I was truly amazed when we first turned the TV on; it was definitely beyond my expectations. The picture was incredible and the matte finish on this model really does make a difference. We hooked it up to our DISH and surround system via HDMI cables and had no problems at all. Everything looked and worked as expected for about 3 months.

Then one evening we spotted a red dot in the center of the screen. I immediately opened up a trouble ticket with Samsung and within 2 days I got a call from a service rep to set up an in-home appointment. The tech came out looked at the unit for all of 30 seconds and told me he was ordering a new panel. They never explained what was wrong and I didn't ask since I was just happy that it was covered under warranty. I the panel was just replaced a few days ago, and since then it has started to make popping and crackling noises. This occurs mostly when it is powering up or powering down but also sometimes while we are watching TV which is quite annoying.

Although Samsung service has said they will come out again to look at it, I have to say I am a bit disappointed. This was a big purchase for me and I was not expecting to have problems this soon. I know that issues can occur with anything, no matter how much you paid for it, but it still stinks. Although the transaction with Amazon was fantastic, I can't help thinking that if I had paid the extra money for tax and purchased it at a local retail store, I could have exchanged it and not had to deal with multiple repairs. Hopefully all of this will be resolved soon so I can get back to enjoying my beautiful TV.

  5. I am speechless when it comes to the picture on the TV, especially whenever I play my Blu-rays on it. The picture cant be anymore clearer. The sound is just fine. I have had no problems what so ever with anything so far. Great product. Keep it up Samsung.

5 comments about Philips 42PFL5603D/27 42-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV.
  1. I had done a considerable amount of research before I purchased the Phillips 42 and I have to say I am quite pleased with my choice. I have owned the TV for about a month now and here are some of my findings. Hope this helps.

After reading a few conflicting spec reports, the Phillips 42 does in fact have a 5ms seek time. Some sites you will see have it listed at 8ms but this is incorrect. The 5ms is amazing when watching sports or playing games. There are roughly no 'trails' or inconsistent images.

The trim around the TV does not glow or light up as some earlier reports suggested (before the release)

Software like the 3D engine and HD Natural Motion is very stable and looks great when watching HD content. Infact it takes a bit to get used to it, being that image panning is very very smooth.

Software like Dynamic Contrast and Active Control were kind of useless to me because when these features are active you can actually see the screen adjusting. It seemed annoying to me and at first and I thought there was something wrong with the set. However they are easily defeated (turned off) and it worked fine after the adjustment was made.

The software also gives you a setup assistant feature which quickly walks through the setting up of the color. It shows you different split screens and asks your opinion on which looks better. After a few of these are answered the TV automatically adjusts itself according to your choices. I think this is a nice feature for those who do not like to 'tweak settings' over and over again. The picture was close to perfect in my opinion after running the setup assistant.

If you are not planning on mounting the set to a wall the stand is very cool. It allows you to 'swivel' the TV up to about 30ยบ in either direction. My TV is located in the middle of the room however my couch is off to the right side. So having the ability to rotate the TV so that I am looking at it in direct line of site is very handy especially when playing games! :)

Fit and finish of the Phillips is superb and as the marketing swill says, it really does look great in any room. My wife was concerned that it was too big for our space however once it was set up she really enjoyed the sleek and subtle design features.

The Remote is pretty basic and cannot be programmed for other devices. I also found that off axis operation (when not pointing directly at the TV) causes inconsistent results. My sense is the remote does not send out a high enough powered IR signal because the issue goes away when I use my logitech universal remote.

As far as power consumption goes, all I can attest to is the fact that it does not get very hot which leads me to believe the power levels are clean however it is hard to tell without proper test equipment. There is a 'powersaver' mode which drastically ramps down the contrast and is only really good in a very dark room. I rarely use this as I prefer my color settings. Even the lower contrast one I created for 'movie mode' still performs better then the preset powersave mode.

Overall quality of the sound is pretty good and in my opinion completely adequate for most situations and/or users. I used the TV for over 2 weeks before setting up my surround sound system and never felt I was missing out. The speakers are not terribly loud so if you are someone who is looking for that full movie experience with explosions so real the cops are called, well, then you will definitely want to invest in a 5.1 or 7.1 surround system. The built-in subwoofers are rear firing so you may want to be careful about judging the resonance in the next room if the rooms share a wall or if you share a wall with a neighbor. The subs don't have too much power so in most cases it should be fine but should be considered.

Amount of Inputs are great. It has 3 HDMI, 2 component and 2 composite. It even has a USB port so you can plug in portable media and display photos and things however I have not used this feature. The only thing I wish is if it had a Digital or Optical sound in but I am sure Phillips felt if you needed that kind of quality you would use it with a Surround System.

Overall a great TV and solid buy for the money. Hope this helped. Good luck!

  2. This tv is amazing, it picked up my HD channels right away and the picture quality is very impressive! We've been watching so many movies and it's been such a treat. The sound on the TV isn't all that bad either, it was a big improvement compared to our older CRT tv... but for movies we have sound coming from a receiver/theater speakers.

I connected my killowatt meter to measure the consumption in power saving mode and sure enough, it consumes between 65watts to 75watts. I looked at CNET's charts that compared power consumption and this beat all other LCD's and Plasma's by a HUGE margin in power consumption (even screens that are much smaller than this). I didn't notice the picture quality go down w/ the power saving mode, it just got slightly dimmer.

The video processing features are nice too, though I disabled the natural motion option (it made movies have a weird appearance to me, kind of like a reality show... hard to describe).

I definitely would recommend this 42PFL5603D LCD TV.

Here's the average power consumption details that I tested for each TV mode (mine is usually set to Power Save):
Power Saving Mode = 72 watts
    Sports = 227 watts
    Standard = 140 watts
    Movie = 140 watts
    Game = 210 watts

  3. Everyone that I know has a samsung, so I wasn't sure about this product. I finally decided to buy it and I don't regret it at all. The TV looks great with the plastic frame and sounds even better. For the price I think it is the best TV out there. It has a lot of different features that most TV's don't have. Overall you will not be disappointed in your decision to buy this awsome TV.

  4. I have never taken time to write a review before, but after getting this TV I had to. I have shopped TVs for 2 months before buying this and I'm glad I did. The picture is amazing. I hooked it up to my digital cable box that is not HDTV and thought Wow great picture, but when I played a DVD on my 1080 upconvert player through HDMI I was speechless. Its like looking trough a window. The sound is good from TV but through a tuner its incredible. As a matter of fact I just ordered a new 7.1 tuner to really do it justice. In my opinion it is a great TV at a great price. And with a name like Philips you know it is a quality product with outstanding support. Several years ago I had a Philips TV stop working after only 2 months. I called the 800 number and they had it picked up the next day. As it turned out, even though it was hit by lightning, they covered parts and labor 100% - even overnighted parts and I had the set back in 3 days. Made a believer out of me - (also taught me to make sure surge suppressors are properly grounded). 18 years later and the repaired set still works - my nephew has it in his dorm room.

TV was delivered a day earlier than their shipping estimate. Amazon Delivery driver called 3 times to schedule delivery and to let me know where he was so I didn't have to hang around all day waiting. He was very courteous and helpfull, unpacked TV and helped me hook up cables Etc. I will not hesitate to buy anything from Amazon ever again.

  5. We did a bunch of research before buying this TV, and to be honest, the eco-tv power-saving features were the factor that closed the deal for us. I figured that we'd trade a little picture quality for the savings in power, but that it would be worth it in the end.

I was wrong! The picture quality is terrific, even with the power-saving mode turned on. The main difference is that without the power-saving mode on, the set is extremely bright. With the power-saving mode on, the set has a normal brightness level. As far as I can tell, the power-saving picture is at least as good as the regular picture on any similarly priced LCD that I was able to see.

I use the set for gaming (xbox 360), and have been very pleased with the performance so far. I haven't used the speakers, so I can't comment on them.

The pricing seemed very reasonable to me, and the TV works great. Save money, great picture, help the planet-- why not? I'd buy it again in an instant.

  1. I'm very happy with this TV. I needed a small TV and the Sharp was the only TV that fit the bill. I also like the fact that this TV have audio / video inputs in componet, composit, and s-video formats.

  2. I got a total of 45 minutes viewing time from this TV. Less than a week after getting the TV, it burnt out.

  3. My tv doesn't work. I don't know why but it doesn't work since the first day. I have an uncle that buyed one and works perfect. Maybe is only my TV.

  4. The NTSC warning implies it only has a NTSC (analog) tuner. The specs say it has both NTSC and ATSC (digital) tuners builtin. None of the reviews comment on how the builtin ATSC tuner performs... somebody w/one of these plz advise, thank you!

  5. I bought this television but returned it because the sound quality was so bad. It sounded like the sound was coming through a tin box or a transitor radio. It was so irratating - even though the picture was pretty good I could not stand the sound.

  1. Last week our <4 yr old 32" Panasonic CRT set decided to stop working for some unknown reason. Though not exactly in our budget, we were forced to buy a new TV. It was time to upgrade to an LCD flat panel.

To make a long story shorter I was looking at the Sonys and the Samsungs when my wife spotted this Toshiba.

    The good:
    1) "By today's standards" the price was right. A lot of bang for the buck... so far.
    2) It has multiple inputs for my older components as well as room to upgrade to newer ones, plus
    3) The picture looked great.
    4) It weighs less than 30lbs, a far cry from the CRT set it replaces. I can handle this one by myself.
    5) Glare has been a problem in our home. This set has completely eliminated that.
    6) Not a nice wood veneered cabinet, but the I have to admit that I like the piano black finish much more than I thought I would

The bad: (C'mon. You knew it was coming.)
    1) I don't want to have to turn on the amplifier every time I watch the evening news, so I have to say that the built-in speakers leave a lot to be desired, even for TV built-ins.
    2) I found the set-up to be challenging. It took me a few days to come up w/settings I could live with.
    3) As one who remembers the "instant-on" TV craze it seems to take an unusually long time for the set to decide whether or not it will light. The Panasonic's (CRT) amplifier would come on almost immediately followed by the picture. When powering up this set, nothing at all happens for about 10 secs. It acts like an old tube set from the '60's. Is that normal for these?

That's about it, both the good and the bad as I see it so far. I only hope we can expect to get more than 4 yrs from this one.

  2. I've had this TV for about a month now. I watched the Red Wings win the Stanley Cup in HD a few weeks ago, and it was probably the sharpest sports broadcast I've ever seen. Colors look great and the blacks are pretty close. The built-in speakers are acceptable compared to some other off-brand 32" models, and are not too tinny or fake. The warm-up takes 5-7 seconds and the lag between channels is about a second. I have analog cable tv so this may vary with your results.

The only problem I've had with this is the VGA input from a computer. Depending on your use, this could be a big trade off. I have a Sony SZ laptop, one of the best ones they make. If I input the signal from the Sony, I can see a square develop in the upper-right corner of the tv that's about 7 inches wide and 4-5 inches high, which will disappear after a few seconds. This happens frequently if I play an AVI movie fullscreen, but if I burn that movie to a disc and play it on my Philips DVD player through the composite inputs, it looks fine with no squaring. It should be noted that I played 'Gears of War' (PC game) and it didn't exhibit this problem. I also see it if I scroll vertically through a webpage quickly, but only for a split second.

In summary, I'd give this Toshiba 3.5 stars overall, and round up to 4. I really don't watch much tv which will probably be its intended use among purchasers here. The VGA problem is extremely annoying, but I mostly use it for stock trading/reading articles on the internet. Also I plan on giving the tv away to a relative when I leave the US later next year, so no big loss. But if I had to do it over again, I'd probably pay a little more and get the 32" Samsung. I did a search and found two other people with this same problem, so I don't think it's an issue with my PC or its configuration. If I had an HDMI or S-Video output on my laptop (I don't), I could try those instead.

  3. got this as a gift 4 my daughter, she loves it,says it has a great picture

  4. I went to my local electronics store, planning to buy the Sharp LC32SB24U rather than this Toshiba. The sales person suggested, before buying, I do a side by side comparison view of the Toshiba 32AV500U and the Sharp LC32SB24U. The Toshiba was $40 more than the Sharp, and I figured it would be the typical upsell.

But comparing the image quality of the Sharp and Toshiba, the Toshiba won hands down. The Sharp definitely had a more "washed out" look, while the Toshiba picture was more vibrant with blacker blacks and greater contrast. I doublechecked that both sets were tuned to the same HD source, etc. Anyway this demo was enough to (up)sell me and I bought the Toshiba. It has been great.

This unit is for the bedroom and I don't regret getting the 32" instead of a 26".

I didn't know much about QAM tuners before buying, but what that means is that I can connect my Verizon FIOS cable directly into the TV (no converter box) and receive digital TV channels, some HD channels, and all the digital music channels, all without needing a converter box. Obviously with a converter box you get a better user interface (onscreen interactive program guide) and many more channels, but for the moment I am happy using the TV with direct cable connection (no converter box) and saving a few $ per month.

HD picture quality is so much better than regular digital TV -- if you go to the expense of buying an HDTV (like this one) you really need to hook it up to receive HDTV or you are missing a whole lot.

I am not a videophile or audiophile but have to say that I would recommend this Toshiba very highly to anyone looking to spend between $600 and $700 for a 32" HDTV.

  5. TV was nice for a year and a half. The video board burned out which in turn blew out the lcd screen. Was only used about 4 hrs a week. Repair shop said it would cost as much as a new TV to fix. The tech also said it's poor design by Toshiba making the video board and screen as one part. Be careful, it's cheaper than the higher quality for a reason. My Sony has been around for 7 years, no problems.

I had extended warranty and they refunded me the entire cost of the TV instead of bothering with fixing it. That was surprising, so it must be a known common problem with Toshiba.

  1. I must admit, that I did my research before purchasing this TV, but now that I have had it for a few months, I can honestly say that it is the best electronics purchase I have ever made. I have not had a single problem yet, beside not having enough HD channels to watch, and Blu-Ray movies are crystal clear. Could not be happier.

  2. This TV is a no-brainer! The picture quality is amazing and the number and location of inputs/outputs are excellent. The set is super-thin and light, and looks fantastic. Great colors and contrast in the picture. The remote is simple enough, though I guess it could be improved. Don't hesitate to buy this one.

  3. HDTV came packed really well to insure no damage during delivery. I love the thing, colors are really clear.

  4. The television was delivered ahead of promised date and am completely satisfied with the transaction.

  5. Got it a couple of weeks ago, so far very happy with it as well as Amazon's service. While I expected a good picture, the most pleasant surprise has been how "smart" the user interface is and how it can sense what things are plugged in and where...

  1. Pros: A fairly decent set. Easy to set up and get going. Very sensitive analog and digital tuners. Good picture.
Cons: Don't buy this set if you use an outdoor antenna with rotator. The set does an "autoscan" to acquire and memorize all analog and digital channels with the antenna pointed in one direction. If you rotate the antenna to another position, you can manually enter analog channels into memory from the remote's keypad, but NOT the digital channels. In order to view the digital channels at the new antenna heading, you must perform the "autoscan" again... takes about 2 minutes... and the "autoscan" erases and replaces the channels memorized from the original antenna heading. Verified this performance issue with Samsung Tech support. Verified this flaw with sets in two dealer showrooms with Samsung HDTVs. No solution available. Sony and other sets worked fine for manual digital channel entry. This is a serious drawback for an otherwise good set.

  2. We bought this Samsung LN19A330 to replace an old tube TV we had in our home office. WOW! Even in full sunlight, the picture on this 19" Samsung LCD is perfect. We have an older model of the same TV in our guest bedroom, and the difference in the newer model is clearly visible -- brighter screen, more intense contrast, and the color is significantly more vivid. It is the perfect TV for a small room.

  3. This is my second Samsung flat screen -- the picture is perfect. This is a compact unit with a glossy black frame -- bought it for my guest room and it is hooked up to FIOS (Verizon) -- I am completely satisfied with this purchase from Amazon.

  4. We bought this tv for the kitchen. We use it with Rabbit Ears and it works very well. The HD picture is excellent. Non HD are not very good. Audio is OK. Over all a good TV if you need one of this size. I suspect they may be a little over priced.

  5. This is a very good budget LCD TV for use in a kitchen, dorm room, small bedroom. 720p resolution is perfectly fine for a TV in this size (19"). The colors and picture look great with a bit of calibration (I found the default settings to be a bit too bright). There were enough A/V connections for me, although the audio from the built-in speakers is only adequate at best (but what else can one expect from a built-in audio system?). There are other models, both from Samsung and others, with more bells and whistles, but if you're looking for a good basic small LCD TV, this one is definitely worth considering.

5 comments about Sony Bravia XBR-Series KDL-40XBR4 40-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV.
  1. This is truly an exceptional television.

After reading Consumer Reports, CNET, etc. regarding various televisions to use, I had concluded that an LCD television was the right kind to buy. There is no danger of images "burning" into the monitor (as plasma televisions have a history of doing). There are also less maintenance issues involved that rear projection televisions may have (such as cleaning the tiny mirrors used to project the image).

Once I decided that LCD was right for me, I began researching all types of LCD televisions. Again, I went to the various sources (including reading various reviews on Amazon) as well as talking to a couple of friends of mine that had recently purchased this product.

The HD pictures are top notch. There are also some great features to tweak the pictures (including a Theater mode which slightly dims the picture for optimal viewing when the lights are off).

If you're in the market for a 40"+ LCD, this is one product that is worth taking a look at.

  2. Let's review the thought process from the beginning.

    - Purchased first flat screen was a 37 inch plasma Panasonic Viera 3 years ago: excellent buy.
    - I was sure my next tv would be a plasma Viera as well until I started reading that the black levels of LCD have improved significantly.
    - Checked out the Samsungs (red frame versions) but what caught my eye in a circuit city store was the Bravias with the "motion enhancers" features. The Bravia pictures truly look like it was window or portal through which you can reach through and touch the characters. It was **unbeleivable**.
    - I happened to be driving across the USA at the time and hence, I stopped by 3 more Circuit City or Best Buy stores in different cities. Confirmed that the stunning Bravia picture quality is due to the TV alone (and not due to variation in connection or poor feeds etc etc). In each of the stores, I checked out the equivalent Samsung LCDs and the picture quality was no up to par.
    - Received my Bravia today (amazon delivery was effective) and yes, the picture quality is truly stunning (I am using a HDMI)

Conclusion: At time zero, the Bravia is a clear win!

Additional thoughts on impact of Blue Ray:

    - Using the Bravia with a PS3 (40Gb) box as the Blue Ray player. As a test to confirm what all the Blue Ray hyperbole is about, I loaded a rented Blue Ray DVD "3:10 to Yuma" and of course, the picture quality was stunning. I also happen to own the regular DVD version and when I loaded it immediately for comparison, I really cannot see any degradation or significant difference. For both DVDs, the quality is truly great.

Bottom Line: I don't plan on running out and spending $ to upgrade my existing DVD collection to Blue Rays version. Any new releases specially designed for Blue Ray technology, of course, maybe that is a different story.

  3. I've been a Sony video guy forever. I still own a SLHF-1000 Beta VCR, and this XBR is replacing a 27" Trinitron as my main television (which is still going strong after 12 years, and will for many more, undoubtedly). I finally caved in to the modern era when I found this TV for $1349 at a major big box retailer. Now is the time to buy XBR4 models, as the new XBR 6/7 models are about to be released, and if you can find the XBR4/5 on clearance.

Although Samsung shares some components and R&D with Sony, it's not just the LCD display you're buying when you buy a Sony. It's the other electronics, firmware and other important aspects, too (and it plays nice with other Sony equipment and remote controls you might have). The Sony picture looks better than any Samsung I've looked at. Sony is simply the King of the LCD TV Hill, just as Pioneer and Panasonic share that reputation on the plasma side. In my opinion, you simply can't do any better.

Pictures are very good out of the box on Standard video setting; although, "Vivid" is apparently just for the showroom, or for someone who wears sunglasses while watching TV. Audio and stereo separation is very good for in-TV speakers (hence the much wider bezel compared to many lesser sets with skinny speakers on the side, or cheat and place the speakers underneath the screen). A friend's Samsung TV's speakers rattle and distort like a crappy 20 year old RCA, and analog channels looked just horrible; analog pics on the XBR look almost as good as on my tube Trinitron. Buyers of Vizios and other cheap manufacturers are today's VHS 8-hours-on-a-T120 crowd, while the real video aficionados who used to buy Betamax, EDBeta (or maybe SuperVHS) are now enjoying XBR LCD (or Pioneer plasma).

With the 120 Hertz refresh rate, motion blur is almost unnoticeable. For less blur and quality of picture, you'd need to go to a high-end plasma.

Concerning the comments of a couple reviewers: I hear no fan noise (and there is a Sony fix for earlier-manufactured sets with that issue). At least, the Sony does not have Samsung's huge problem with TVs turning off by themselves that require a firmware update.

I highly recommend this TV (or it's big brothers in 46 and 52 inch) highly, especially if you can grab one for a clearance price.

  4. I love this TV. I have a PS3, Wii, XBox 360 Elite and DirectTV connected no problem and getting maximum quality out of each. Blu-Ray anything on this TV will make you drool. It's in a naturally lit room resulting in minimal glare. Viewing angles are impressive. Check for deals, I got it for $1599 and it's been worth every penny!

  5. This is TRULY a TOP of the LINE television from sony in terms of performance. The HDTV is UNREAL. When I first ordered an HD movie on demand I was FLOORED by the 1080P picture. INCREDIBLE. Hooked up Xbox 360 and was amazed at the quality. Incredible TV,

  1. This TV's Silicon Optics HQV video processor is as good as advertised. It's easy to make HD content look amazing, but most HD TVs do a crappy job of displaying SD content. If the SD content is good quality, it's often hard to tell that you're not watching a HD channel.

The negative of this TV is the weight and glass front.

  2. Having owned this TV for around a month its one of the best TVs I have ever owned. All my previous TVs were Sony's and yes its right there with them or above them.
I paid $1300 delivered to the door what a bargain! Out of the box its pretty close to perfect. The only adjustments I did was to lower the brightness and set the advanced black level enhancer to on, the lighting was set to dark room, this TV has plenty of brightness turning it down a little will extend the life of the LCD and also improve the picture giving better black levels. Some pro reviews have stated that the black level performance was average, lowering the brightness will improve that.

There is still a lot of standard definition out there and this set performs much better than I expected and better than any other LCD Ive seen, probably due to the excellent Silicon Optix HQV processor it up-scales the tuner to what looks like standard DVD. DVDs look close to 720p HD and that's without an up converting DVD player. If you are watching SD TV you can be hard pressed to think its HD that is until you go to a HD station.
HD is simply stunning its like looking out a window very few Hdtvs can achieve this, color quality is excellent. Color temp is user adjustable at 6500 or 9200 but it's not necessary to adjust 6500 is fine in my opinion. It has PIP which I use often for sports, and a nice function called channel surfing it will display several channels at once so you can choose the one you want. it also has Split screen.
The Menu is good once you master it, it could drive some people crazy at first though because of the rotating menu. The remote has several small buttons which when viewing in the dark are hard to find despite the fact that it back lit, you have to memorize the ones you need to use like favs sleep view etc, that's about the only thing I can complain about oh it is heavy at 130lbs but once you get it into place that not an issue other thing in researching this TV I heard what I thought was a ridiculous complaint about an egg shaped image when the TV was switching input or in very dark scenes, I saw it too but it disappeared after a week or so, Maybe it had to break in whatever its gone,
Sound quality is very good with 25 watts per channel and nice sounding speakers, it has a lot of sound enhancements such as wide sound deep bass and idfa which is preset eq settings for Movie live speech etc.
The fact that Olevia is a new company I give them a lot of credit getting to top of the heap so quick. I own a 32" and 27" Olevia I had a problem with the 32 but Circuit City replaced it and the new one it working great. I would recommend that you buy warranty protection for it being we know little about its reliability. I purchased one on the net for $150 for 5 years at Teds unlimited there are other company's that you can go with as well. So for $1450 I have a great TV with a 5 year warranty.
I almost felt guilty for not buying a Sony but their 40" Bravia was several hundred dollars more. So Instead I have Sony quality with a Olevia price. I recommend this TV highly walk run or surf and get one before the price go's up. FM

  3. Other then the fact this TV is 160 pound range there is absolutely nothing I can complain about with this TV. The picture quality is excellent. What really made this TV was the Game Mode feature for me. Trying to play Guitar hero 3 for my Wii was challenging before turning on Game Mode; because of the TV trying to upconvert to 1080p.

For 47" LCD at 1300$ shipped is a price range that cant really be touched by most other TV's at the moment.

  4. Don't buy a Syntax Olevia! I bought one and it died almost to the day the warranty went out. Customer service said I would have to pay to ship it back and pay the parts and labor to fix it and that would cost over half of the TV's cost. They wouldn't offer to help with anything and they said they lost my registration card, the same one they used to call me with to ask me how I liked it a week after I bought the TV. So all I can do is to post this to every blog I can to try to inform others.

  5. I had read the reviews and had one of Olevia's computer monitors and so was well aware of the brand.

The set is huge, has great contrast, color, incredible sharpness and very goodsound. I plugged in a powered subwoofer and it felt likeI was in a theatre.

The set is very heavy. They put a thick piece of glass in front of the LCD panel. Makes cleaning much safer and easier than most LCD TVs. Makes it eay to clean and looking sharp, but it does add a lot of weight.

Don't be afraid that it is not a "brand name".

Save yourself several nundred dollars and get a set that no one can claim that their's is better.

  1. I bought this for my 84 year old very techno Mother just days ago. I recently bought a Sony XBR4 52" from amazon with the white glove delivery and everything was perfect. This crew was not so great but we adapted and the TV set was really great despite the delivery crew. I would highly recommend this set. The 40" set really does not have to be 1080P, esp. since cable cannot deliver anything in HD this set can not receive. If you go to a 46" set; you definitely need to go to 1080P. Buy this set! Mom has this in her living room and absolutely loves it!

  2. I wasn't really planning to purchase a TV for another six months, but I happened across this model at 900 bucks on Amazon and decided to pull the trigger. For a 40 inch TV, 1080p is unnecessary.

I knew I wanted one of the Name Brand (Samsung, Toshiba, Sony, Sharp, LG) TVs because of some poor experiences my friends have had with other brands like Vizio and Dynex.

And while this is the older entry-level model from Samsung, the major differences (in addition to 720p vs 1080p) between this model and the more expensive ones largely came down to one fewer HDMI inputs (2 vs. 3), a lower contrast ratio that is still good enough to clearly distinguish many shades of black in a brightly lit room, and a slower refresh rate that might matter if I were playing a fast-paced video game, but hasn't been noticeable at all for watching TV (including sports) and movies.

All in all, for a price that comes in 30% or more below similar sets, I couldn't be happier.

  3. For the price, at the time of purchase, you couldn't beat this TV. Delivered to your door, and taken out of the box which also is a big plus.

The TV is large, the image is crisp and clear, bottomline is that it works. If you've been reading TONS you'll notice that there are some slightly brighter screens that produce deeper blacks etc. So yes, you CAN get a slightly better image but at a much higher price. I've had it for several weeks now and have never said, "oh, that black isn't as deep as I want". Fantastic product.
