5 comments about Panasonic TC-26LX70 26-Inch 720p LCD Flat Panel HDTV.
  1. Received the set about a month ago through Amazon and JR Music World. Absolutely no problems on order or delivery (within 5 business days).

I was not planning on using the set for HD right away so was looking for an upgrade over my 20 inch analog. I am extremely pleased with the Standard Definition reception. Has it all over the old TV which wasn't bad. Set up was simple and straightforward. The TV is located in a sun room so viewing the picture during the day can be a problem but not with this baby in Vivid mode. No fade or distortion with viewing angles either. I think Panasonic rates it at 160 degrees or so and I would agree. Sound is very good. Never have it cranked up over half-way.

Overall an excellent choice so far.

  2. This TV is EXCELLENT. Great sound and picture. It sync'd with my digital cable box fairly easily. No dislikes. I bought this TV sight unseen based on reviews and was not disappointed.

The only concern was the condition of the the box when it arrived. The package came embedded within a larger package with popcorn styrofoam in between. The outer box looked pretty beat up (DHL was the shipper) in fact I took pics of the box prior to opening it for documentation purposes if there was damage. In the end, all was well. I ordered on a Sunday night and it arrived by the following Thursday.

To evaluate this TV, just watch CSI Miami in HD. The colors and clarity are amazing. I will finish by saying that I normally don't do these product reviews unless I am truly impressed by a product.

  3. I purchased this TV at my local Circuit City store at Christmastime when there was a good sale promotion going on. Like many of the reviewers, I did some preliminary research beforehand and found the Panasonic to be a good value for its features and price range. Sure, we'd all like the bling, bling of Sony! But since this was a second TV for our bedroom, we based our decision more on value/price. (Previously we had an ancient 12-inch tube TV/VCR combo so to us this was a major upgrade.) With that said, overall this has been a good purchase and I would recommend this TV as an addition to the home. Not sure I would want it as my primary TV, but for someone just starting out and on a budget it would certainly be a contender. The picture is clear and the controls are straightforward. Good sound quality. This is also the TV that our family plays PS2 on, so from a gaming perspective, it's also a winner. A couple constructive criticisms: 1) I'm constantly hitting the volume instead of the channel button because they are opposite of all the other TV remotes we have or have had in our house. 2) I found the instruction manual to be less than helpful. It's great for "out of the package" set up. But for trying to figure out some of the advanced features or delving deeper into the menu settings, forget it. And the Panasonic website wasn't a help either. When I typed the model number into the category search, this TV didn't even come up. Strange, since it's only a few months old. After digging around, I found some information, which was not much more helpful than the manual. 3) Lastly, I don't use this TV with a cable box, and I had some difficulty receiving/setting up the HD channels. Not everyone is aware that you can receive HD channels without a cable box. And this TV is capable of picking up the HD channels without a box. However, because the manual is not very helpful in explaining how to program analog and HD channels, I had some difficulty. With some tinkering and guesswork, I was able to eventually get them programmed. Panasonic has a solid reputation and is rated pretty well for reliability. They just need to put a bit more time and thought into writing their manuals!

  4. I'm new to this HDTV thing, so I was expecting a super crisp, clear image. I'm using a DVD player which is connected using either s-video or component. It seems to me the image could be crisper. Not sure if this is a failure of the TV or the DVD.
Also, I don't enjoy watching movies that are stretched out. We change the aspect ratio each time we watch a movie to see what works best. We may need an HDTV DVD player... not sure if that will allow us to use the full resolution it's capable of.

  5. I bought this set in Oct 2007..We had been living with a 19" color set in the living room for many years, and it was time!
I had to choose a set that would fit in our small living room, yet give
    good quality color and sound.
It is now June 2008, and this set is wonderful! If you have a living room that is 12x17 or smaller, this is great! . The controls are good, however, if you use playstation, or need to connect video, not too convenient..On the side... I love Panasonic..The sound is great, the picture is great.I am still very happy with this set. I can now see this set without my glasses! (well except for letters)
Highly recommended for a great view and sound! Sound is very very important to me...I have extremely sensitive hearing. Panasonic is the best in this category.

1 comments about Sharp LC46SB54U 46-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV.
  1. The Sharp LC-46SB54U is a no frills, value based 46" LCD 1080P HDTV. The picture on this TV is really good. I compared it in-store with newer Samsung technology right next to it, and it compared favorably. I was worried about its sound capability when I heard it in-store, but when I hooked it up at home, the sound is actually quite good...especially with the simulated surround sound turned on.

Most menu functions are intuitive and easy to navigate, the exception being the channel add/delete function. When you power on the TV, a wizard guides you through some initial setup, including scanning for channels. This process scanned more than 150 extra blank channels into the lineup, which I had to delete out manually. This was a royal pain. Hopefully these settings will persist even if there is a power outage.

The anti-glare capability of the screen is very good, but this greatly diminishes the quality of the view you have when you are not looking at the screen straight on. Even though the specs brag of 176 degrees horizontal, I estimate that at about the 120 degree mark the screen doesn't look good enough to even worry about watching. The 6ms response time allows this TV to display very high motion video without blurring...I have been quite pleased with the TV in this area.

The stand is very solid, and the TV is very attractive looking. I was surpised how light the TV was for its size. I was able to pick it up by myself and set it on a 20" high stand. Yet the TV feels like it is built with quality.

A 46" LCD TV is actually significantly bigger than a 42", and this one isn't that much more money...in fact it can be had cheaper than many of the 42" and even 37" TV's out there. If its more important to have a bigger TV than to have 120Hz, PIP, Universal remote, etc. than this may be the TV for you.

    Pros:
Good Value, Great Picture, Good Sound, Well Built

    Cons:
Channel Add/Delete, Viewing Angles, Poor Instructions

  1. Could not get settings to keep a bright picture, was darker than normal no matter how I tried to set brightness, etc. Within 1 day, the screen turned on, displayed the COBY logo, then blacked out. Could only get sound. Occasionally, the screen would stay on. You never knew when turning it on if it would actually stay on. Tried every hookup/setting/outlet/etc. Called COBY and the CSR said it sounded like an internal defect. This was very disappointing since I did research this product online before buying and couldn't find a negative review. Plus COBY said that if I returned it I had to pay shipping which I think is unethical, like I'm being penalized for buying their crappy product!!!

5 comments about Toshiba REGZA Cinema Series 52XF550U 52-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV.
  1. I bought this at an electronics store. In a line up of about a dozen 50"+ LCD and Plasma tv's of varying prices, I picked this one out immediately as having the nicest, sharpest picture. I went into the store "just looking" and came out with this TV, spending $2500.00 (about $1000 more than I intended.) Looks great in my room, I particularly like the sleek design (not much border on it). The few HDTV stations I get look great, DVD's look good (not great like they would on Blueray, but I will wait a bit for Blueray player prices to come down.) All in all, very satisfied with this nice looking (but pricey) TV.

  2. I was about to buy this TV on Amazon but was surprised to find this at a better price at the traditional local retailer Video Only. There were very few reviews of this TV on [...] which helped cement my decision. I am by no means a pro at evaluating but this is my third LCD TV purchase of which have included a Sharp 37", Sony 46" and now this Toshiba. I used to also own a Toshiba rear-projection HD TV so am familiar with Toshiba televisions. While I have only had it for a day all in this is a great TV, particularly given how thin the bezel is. This TV is only 47 3/4" wide which is about as wide as my old 46" Sony but now includes 52" of screen real estate. My living room had an area that was 48" so only had 2 choices that I new of including a Mitsubishi and this Toshiba. I was not that impressed with the Mitsubishi display and found it to be over-priced compared to the Toshiba.

When I opened up the box I was immediately amazed at how sleek and modern the screen looked. It looked great just sitting there in my living room. When I turned it on I was shocked by how much cleaner it looked than my old Sony particularly with HD inputs. Blu-ray alone was better than being in a movie theater particularly with Pirates of the Caribbean. Like any high def TV regular TV is disappointing compared to HD signals but it looks fine from my standpoint. The other big selling point on this TV is the 120hz processor which makes sports and action movies have less blur. I will update my review when I have more viewing time with it.

  3. I have searched far and wide for the "perfect" LCD HDTV for at least 2 years, and there isn't one. If you think you've found one then do not go searching for Reviews -- and stay away from the heavily-active Forums that discuss these items because you will become discouraged.

The first problem is in knowing what to look for. The next is in knowing what to avoid. The third is figuring out if any of this matters to you, in your situation, for your specific needs.

This Toshiba 52" is the latest iteration of their top-line products. And if you're into minimalism, it's a stunner. The bezel is amazingly thin compared to other sets. Advantage? It allows you to fit a larger screen into your available space, if the conditions are right.

But, ah -- the catch! Next out will be Toshiba's super-light, super-thin sets that are 2" less thick. Can you wait yet another year? You'll never defat the "What's Next" Catch-22.

It has every major feature you could think of, but I won't go into the merits of these because you'll soon find that beauty and "merit" are in the eye of the beholder. If you want easy setup, this TV has it. HDMI? It has 3 inputs and one output. Nice Black Levels -- definitely, yes. Great color accuracy out-of-the-box -- yes... to my eyes. I'm sure a professional reviewer will find fault with this compared to the Pioneer Kuro excellent line of plasmas.

Like every other set, does it come from the factory over-tweaked? Yes. It will take some research to fine-tune the picture. The darn conrtrast and backlight were set at 100% -- which hurt my eyes terribly in a dark room. Is every LCD perfectly glare-free? -- not this one. The reflections of overhead lights are annoying (like reflections off Scotch "Magic Transparent Tape"), but softer than any Plasma or Glass-fronted screen I've seen. The speakers on this set are nearly invisible and perfectly adequate (much more so than my 37" Sharp).

If you insist on looking into the nitty-gritty, please note that -- at this time -- I've been unable to find any professional Reviews on this set. And it's been out there in limited quantities for a few months. Finding it locally may be difficult. Why? Because the guys in the know are snatching these up as fast as inventory comes into stock. My purchase from Beach Audio was very easy and they communicated very well. But they are, technically, not an authorized Reseller. Their Distributor and Amazon both are, and I've been reassured that Toshiba will not simply walk away from their Warranty.

UltimateAVMag.com is working on a professional Review, right now -- due out shortly. AVSForum has a raging online discussion that has most people very excited about this set -- and it has gone on for months with some great insights and advice (even tweaking tips on how to squeeze out the best picture) -- and no "This kills the deal!" discoveries, as happens on so many other seemingly worthwhile sets. These participants are not pansies. They'll eat your lunch when it comes to discussing esoterica about these sets that you never knew existed.

But beware! These Forum settings can destroy the unprepared or uneducated casual visitor by nitpicking the least-likely of all problems, and blowing it completely out of proportion to most viewers experiences. Sometimes, you'll wonder if these participants ever enjoy anything! Ahhh, the joys of fanaticism! Having said that, it is perhaps especially telling about this model that they have not found too many Achilles' Heels... yet. Not too many people actually own this set (I do). When they hit the big consumer stream, this may all change as newer sets rise to the occasion. You cannot stop progress.

When turned to no picture, my set displays "brighter" dark regions in every corner. Some guys find that unacceptable, but I've only ever seen a true black on a Pioneer plasma. And I've never noticed these regions while watching any video or TV images. If these types of revelations bother you -- DO NOT VISIT AVSFORUM!! Your enjoyment of ANY set may be doomed if you read these discussions too deeply. Or if you have a thin skin.

    Biggest observation I can offer...
If this is your first "big" HDTV, please beware -- the bigger you go, the worst your "normal" TV channels will look. Unless you invest in a Video Scaler (several thousands of dollars, although Gefen has one coming for HDTV that runs about $600) or an Audio-Video Receiver that includes an upscale HQV Processor (such as Onkyo's TX-SR875, at slightly over $1,000), you will NEVER improve regular programming by buying a fancier or larger set. Most homeowners not versed in resolution and scaling issues will be frustrated and angry about this. I think it will become the Number One misleading "thing they never mentioned in the store" -- where they probably only ever viewed demo discs of Blu-Ray movie clips.

You buy an HDTV for viewing HDTV content. NOT for improving SD or sub-par video or compressed cable source material. Blu-Ray movies will be so darned perfect, you may cancel your cable and FIOS and satellite movie bundles and decide to only rent Blu-Ray discs through great services such as Netflix. Local or piped-in HD stations will vary in quality. The good ones will knock your socks off -- but poor video sources are MADE WORSE by large and expensive HDTVs, just as they are by the cheap ones. A few of these do offer better video processors, but there is no easy source to look at, telling you which ones they are. That's where the Forums do help -- some of these guys rip their sets apart and tell you which processors they found inside. Remember I mentioned the word "fanaticism"??

This Toshiba is one of the best LCDs available, so far (at least, until the professional reviews come out telling us Early-Adopters that we're wrong). So stay tuned...

  4. This TV is a stunning LCD panel.

5:5 pulldown, great upconvert, small bezel, hdmi 1.3a for future...

I still can't believe how good it looks.

If I had to say the negatives...

Panel is in between a plasma and lcd as far as gloss (I think they call it new matt or somethign)... It does reflect some light not as bad as plasma but it does reflect.

Inputs in back are kind of in a bad place for wall mount

Unit is 6 inches thick --

Positives are many - great blacks, great sports, great games...

Color settings in service mode are great...

Price at under 2500 is a steal -- if you can find one...

  5. Just got this lcd last night and without even tweeking it yet I was very impressed by the color compare to the vizio 46 that I returned from costco.Comparing the two tv's is not an option. Now I can see real blacks and the color is so amazing. How much more if I tweek it, but i dont have time right now due to busy work but I know it will be better when i start tweeking it with my calibration software. Like I said, just right out of the box I am very impressed... Im glad I chose this TV...For so many months of studying the next HDTV for me. THis is the exact TV I really wanted.

  1. I'll try to give as detailed a review as possible here.

    Picture Quality: 5/5 stars
I'm sure this is what you're most interested in and I can tell you it is absolutely beautiful. The black levels on this tv are fantastic for an LCD product. The picture is extremely sharp and detailed and the colors are absolutely fantastic. I used the Avia Essentials Guide to Home Theater Avia II to calibrate the tv and it did make a pretty big difference in the overall quality of the picture. The one area where the set shines is with the ability to tweak every aspect of the picture. They have the standard settings (contrast, brightness, color, sharpness, etc.), plus they have additional advanced settings for each color. You can tweak this thing to get it spot on and it doesn't take long to do.

    HDTV: 5/5 stars
I've got this hooked up to a PS3 (bluray) and an Xbox 360 and the video is absolutely gorgeous. I've watched BluRay and regular DVD's through the PS3 on this set and they are stunning. The BluRay's almost feel as if you can jump into the picture. DVD's, even though running at a much lower resolution still look great on this set. Part of that is due to the upscaling in the PS3 and the rest is up to the TV. I must say I'm impressed with the picture quality. Also, for gaming, I've noticed no motion blur or any type of ghosting. The set is very fast and keeps up with the action and is extremely smooth.

    Standard Def Material: 3/5 stars
I currently have a regular satellite receiver hooked up to the tv and the feed from it is definitely watchable. Is it the prettiest thing ever? no...however, it's not distracting either. You just have to know (as everyone should), if you buy an HDTV to watch standard def television, you'll be unhappy. Therefore I'm not basing my overall review score on this section.

    Inputs/Outputs: 5/5 stars
Three HDMI inputs - all 1.3 compliant
Three component inputs (up to 1080i)
    2 composite/svideo inputs
2 coaxial cable inputs (1 for an antenna, another for a cable box/reciever)
    1 digital coaxial output

    Controller: 4/5 stars
There's nothing flashy about the controller that ships with the tv but it works well and gets the job done. The buttons are backlit so you can see them in the dark, and I actually like the input selection. You hit the Input button and then you can arrow left and right to choose the input you'd like to use. Some will like this feature, others would rather just have separate input buttons on the controller. Like I said, nothing special, but it works and it's a programmable controller so you can use it for 4 other devices.

    Speakers (sound quality): 2.5/5 stars
If there was one place where I feel this set falls short, it would be in the sound category. The speakers actually sound pretty bad. I've never been a fan of tv speakers so I'm not letting this reflect in the overall score I gave this television. When you consider how small the frame is around the picture, it's not surprising that it doesn't sound all that great. However, I'd say most people (including myself) hook their nice, hdtv's up to a receiver or external set of speakers so I'm not going to crucify the set on this alone.

    Conclusion: 5/5 stars
If you are looking for a tv that produces a stunning picture, especially when watching high def material, I think this is an absolutely phenomenal set. It has all the perks of an LCD (low screen glare, super crisp picture, no burn in, etc.) with many of the positives of a plasma (great black levels, ability to handle fast moving scenes, great color). I definitely recommend a bluray player (now that hd-dvd seems to be dying out) if you want to see what this set can really do. It is jaw dropping. On the negative side, if you place a lot of stock in the sound that comes from a tv, you may be unhappy with this set. I'm basing my review score on the picture quality, inputs/outputs, and setup of the set. I'd buy it again.

  2. I purchased this TV 3 days ago. This model was introduced about Oct, 2007, and is a comparable to other 120 Hz/1080p TVs introduced then. This is my first HDTV. The first program I watched was a PBS special about Mt Everest. This was a 1080i signal received over basic Comcast signal (not the HD package). Stunning views of Everest lit by moonlight with stars overhead, sunsets, sunrises, etc. I thought the blacks and color tones were quite good. We sit 8 feet away and don't think it's too big. I hope to get many years from this TV because of the Mitsubishi quality.

    Pros:
120Hz (should be good for sports, but I haven't watched any)
    Separate adjustments for red,green,blue,cyan,magenta,yellow
Backlit remote, programmable and well designed
    Easy to use onscreen menus
USB port for photo viewing from flash drive (worked fine)
    2 coax cable inputs
HDMI 1.3 for deep color (if anyone ever creates material for it!)
Good viewing angles side to side

    Cons:
    Horrible, tinny sound from speaker
Upper corners are slightly brighter than rest of screen when viewed on dark screen, but not terrible.
Has only 2 color temp adjustments (warm and cool).

I haven't tried bluray or HD-DVD yet. One other thing: I suspect I would have loved almost any of the HDTVs in the store once I got it home. They all seem really good.

Edit: I've now had this TV for over 2 weeks. The TV will occasionally (rarely) shutdown on it's own. It can be turned back on in a minute. Other owners have this same problem [...]. Email to Mitsubishi by me and others has been unanswered. I suspect this is a software problem, but I'm not sure. Playing Photos via USB flash drive is painfully slow; takes 15/seconds per photo even though I set the slideshow to 5 seconds. USB does not respond to the remote control very well.

Color is even better after days of fiddling with color controls. Built-in upscaling of DVDs is good, but my Samsung upscaling DVD does even better job. Nearly as good as the Blu-ray disks from the blu-ray player I connected.

  3. I have owned this TV for four months now (bought it in early March 08). In June, I had a line going from top to bottom appear in the left hand side. I immediately took it in to a authorized dealer, who diagnosed the problem as a bad panel. They ordered the part from Mitsubishi over a month ago and they still have not recieved it. I have called Mits. several times in the last two weeks trying to find out why it has not been sent (as well as the repair dealer also calling) and we keep getting told the part has been back ordered and should be in anytime. I find it funny that the manufacturer of the TV has to order parts from someone else, number 1. Number 2, their customer service has been rude, short and I have tried 4 times to talk to a manager and have left my number for them to call me, and I have yet to hear from them. Number 3. I feel that if they are going to take this long to get a part, they ought to just give me a new set. I have missed many sporting events that I wanted to see in HD, as well as ordered a HD DirecTV dish and DVR unit that I have paid for over a month and have not got to use.

In other words, I would completely stay away from this company. I just about did not get this tv because of horror stories I had read about them to begin with, but when I looked at the tv in the store, it was quite amazing in picture quality, though the audio was lacking (sounded very tinny). The set itself is very good, Just that this company's service is HORRIBLE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. For the longest time I had no TV. My twin Tiffany and I were raised all over the world by our old dad, a rock and roll roadie, songwriter, wine drinker and lover off all things wonderful. He gave us Paris, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Madrid, introduced us to Bob Dylan and Mick Jagger when we were only little girls. He was the best, he was the greatest and he loathed TV.

He used to say there is no difference between watching the news, football, a sitcom or masterpiece theater -- you're sitting on your couch watching people in a box, who make a whole bleeping lot more money than you. Only he didn't say bleeping. That was his way of saying, go out and live your life, don't waste away your hours watching others.

However, my old dad loved the movies. No matter where we were, come the weekend, he took us to whatever silver screen was closest. I can't tell you how many American movies I've seen dubbed into French and Spanish. My old dad loved a good movie.

And so do I. All my life I've lived without a TV, until now. At Costco I saw this Sony Bravia 40 inch TV and I really, really wanted it. But I have a small car and they don't deliver. But Amazon does, so I ordered this baby, then went to Hollywood Video and got a subscription to their Video plan. Twenty-five dollars a month and you can rent all the movies you want. Such a deal.

However, I don't have cable, don't have Dish Network, don't even have an antenna on my roof. No TV for me. Just movies. So Dad, if you're reading this from wherever you are, don't roll over in your grave, because when I turn out the lights at night and turn on this beautiful widescreen movie shower, it's you I'm sitting with.

I have never had any trouble with that old set, it is just getting to heavy for my husband's back when it comes to moving around!
The HD picture we get is vastly more life-like than our old televsion. We don't have any extra speakers and it sounds just fine... I just love it. It's our first flat-screen television and we are tickled with the quality and we got a really great price $[...] which included free shipping and no tax. I look for bargains and most of the time I find it at [...].

  3. This is the best of breed for the 37-42" sized HDTVs. The service I received from Amazon's partner was excellent.

  4. I'm not going to write about all the technical stuff. That's been done. We love this TV. We're not high tech folks and could plug this in and watch.
