- DVD got so many problems. Just don't buy this one. Noises, recognition problems... I should have a Samsung one instead; Japanese product doesn't guarantee the quality.

- After reading positive reviews about this set have had nothing but problems when trying to view DVD's. Stutters, freezes, and stops playing DVD's either new or rented. It might work 50% of the time. It might be just my unit but I'm very dissatisfied with this model.
- I received this unit as a Christmas gift 2004 and have had no problem with the DVD door. However, twice a cassette has become stuck in the VCR. The first time I was able to get it out, but this time no luck. I tried unplugging the unit and trying the eject button again without success. Next step to call Toshiba for assistance, if no help no more Toshiba products
- With good care of DVD's and limited use, this unit started showing alot of DVD play problems at 18 months. Many DVD's would not play at all, or would take several attempts to play, even ones directly out of the box.
At 21 months, DVD completely unusable, and heading to the donation pile.
Very disappointed, nice looking unit, with decent interface controls. Cannot recommend at all.

5 comments about Philips HTS3400D/37 Home Theater System with DVD Player.
- Well, I thought I had bought a Home Theater system about a year and half ago. Little did I know that I had also got a Hummer in bargain!!
It's been a little over a month since it started humming on powering up. It is almost like it is a kid with a stomach pain - when I apply pressure on the top it cries cries out louder - as if my pressure just increased the pain that it is going through.
Although the sound quality is about ok for the price, I would not buy it or recommend it. I am not sure if I will even look at Philips for my next Home Theater after this one either dies out or needs to be euthanised because of the intense pain it seems to be undergoing.
- This system is a very good buy. The sound is quite good and with a
simple hack code, this system can be made to play region free.
In dvd mode(without a disc in the tray)press- play 1590 2379 390 play.
This will change the region code to 0.
I have not had any humming problems like other reviewers.
- I bought this home theater system from Philips last year and it worked fine for about 14 months, and then suddenly it wouldn't read discs any more. Any discs. I tried dozens of clean discs but each time the display would read "no disc".
The warranty only lasts one year so I'm out of luck. Don't make the same mistake I did- don't buy this system. Try another, more reliable brand. Philips just doesn't cut it.
- This is truly a complete system. In addition to excellent CD/DVD performance the built-in AM/FM stereo system is excellent.
The surround sound on BOTH DVD's AND Cable broadcasts will surprise you.
The system even simulates surround sound when the source is simple in stereo.
You will love this system.
It is best used in small to medium rooms. It might be inadequate in very large family rooms.
The sound system has adequate power to fill your room and provide impressive sound effects. Planes will fly from front to rear and side to side.
- We bought this last year for my in-laws and as with many, the DVD player already quit working after less than 10 uses. When we purchased the item, it also did not come with all the parts and when we called customer service, we could not give them the serial number because it had been scratched off with a knife (note to other sellers, only buy from Amazon and not third party seller if you aren't looking for a unit with the numbers scraped off). The surroud sound works pretty well, but it seems useless to have such a terrible quality DVD player with it. I think it would be better to just buy a system without a player built in and buy a player to hook up. We will definitely learn from our mistake with this one.

5 comments about Sony SLVD560P DVD / VCR Combo.
- I was expecting a quality Sony product when I bought this. I have another sony DVD player that I have been using for about 3 years without any problems. This unit is another story.
After 4 months of use, the player stopped working with DVD/RW disks. A few days later, manufactured disks stopped working, now a few days later, no DVDs will play on the unit.
I am so glad I got an extended warranty, because I am going to go and pick up my third new unit today for another 4 months of usage before the inevitable failure.
- after 2 weeks, vhs tapes were being eaten, then refused to cough them up - and other maladies that i don't have time to go into.
- I've had this unit for over a year, and I'm very pleased with it. My only complaint is that when I kept it on once for a few days straight, using its tuner instead of my TV tuner, it stopped working altogether. It was okay when I turned it on the next day. I've found that if I keep it on only when I'm actively watching a DVD or a VHS, then turn it off afterwards, everything's fine with it.
- I bought this product about 3 years ago refurbished off ebay and got it for like 60$ but has played prob 3 years everyday for hours and never had any problems. Not sure if thats because it was refurbished but still was a great buy and with the progressive scan its a cheaper way to have high def picture and sound.
- I bought this DVD/VCR two years ago, and I've had no problems. To keep this unit in good shape, you must use a good head cleaner. I'm upgrading to a digital unit, and will use this in my guest bedroom. My advice is to stick with a label/manufacturer that you're familiar with; a company that offers great products, excellent service, and reasonable prices. For me, I'll continue to buy Sony.

- I wish I had read some of these reviews before I bought one of these. I experienced two of the problems experienced by other reviewers. Hookup was easy and I liked the Auto Setup feature. However, I bought 5 new DVD's to watch and they all skipped at various places throughout the movie. At first I thought the disks were dirty, but they all did this just like another reviewer wrote. The picture quality was great but I would rather watch a VHS tape than sit through all these pauses and skips. Its like the screen freezes for a second or two. The other problem I experienced was slowness of the remote. I would push a button to navigate through a menu and it would take a second for the unit to respond. The audio and video quality was great but these two problems are causing me to send my unit back. Very disappointing as I have 100% Sony equipment in my Audio and Home Entertainment Center. I have been waiting for the Sony combo DVD/VHS unit to come out, now I'm sorry I did. I will send this unit back and continue to use my old Sony VHS deck and buy another brand of DVD player. Sony lost a customer on this deal.
- I couldn't decide whether to buy a DVD player or a VCR (I didn't have room for both) and realized that I could have both with a combo unit. I looked over some of the units offered by various companies and decided to go with Sony, mostly because of the name. I wasn't disappointed; this unit works wonderfully well. Connecting to a TV is easy and the instructions that come with it are easy to understand.
The DVD player is excellent and I have not had any problems (unlike other reviewers) with skipping or pausing of the DVD movies I have played. The picture is clear and crisp and the sound quality is excellent. My only complaint thus far with this unit is the VCR. It works well enough and it is quiet but the picture quality when you record isn't quite up to par. Videos I have rented or bought play well enough, however, anything I record doesn't have a real sharp picture. I thought it might be the tapes I bought to record on, but I have tried two other brands and received the same results. I haven't tried any CDs or CD-Rs in this unit yet so I can't comment on those. All in all I give the Sony SLV-D100, 4 stars - taking off 1 star for the sub-par VCR, and the high price.
- I love the convenience of a combo unit, and I've had no problems with the DVD player. After just a few months, however, the VCR portion of the unit broke down. I play many more DVD's than tapes so this is pretty alarming. The picture looks exactly like what you get when you have dirty heads, so I used the same cleaning method that I use for the other VCR units that I use, (in the kids rooms). I have one of those tapes that you insert and play after putting a few drops of cleaner in it. Well, that didn't fix the problem, (how could the heads really be dirty after a few months of very light use anyway?). Be forewarned about this unit. I bought it since it had good features and didn't have the cheap "feel" of the lower priced units available in the market. My mistake. I'm ditching the thing, (will probably hook it up with my kids TV/VCR combo so that he can watch DVD's too), and going with a better brand.
- I bought this about a year ago from Best Buy and have had virtually no problems with it. I actually use the VCR part much more than the DVD part, and I'd say I do a moderate amount of recording. After a year, no malfunctions whatsoever. Further, I'm completely satisfied with the recordings. I use high-quality tapes, and playback from the recorded tape is almost as good as the original broadcast -- and I generally record in EP mode. The DVD player has also performed flawlessly. I have had no problems with skipping or freezing unless the disk itself was defective. This was confirmed a couple of times by playing the disk in another machine, where the disk froze or skipped at exactly the same places. Once the disk was replaced with a new one, no problems. Unlike other people, I have no trouble with the remote. I think it must be a matter of taste. I don't consider it a design flaw. I have this machine hooked up to a Sony TV, so set-up was effortless. The silver color matches that of my TV. There are two reasons I'm not giving the machine (5) stars: 1) I thought it was a bit overpriced when I bought it but was willing to spend the extra money anyway because I like Sony products; 2) The internal clock loses time. I've been lazy and haven't attempted to fix this. However, it's annoying when you're trying to program the machine to record. I'm always having to correct the clock. It might be something that would be easy to fix, but I haven't bothered calling customer service. I can live with it.
I notice Amazon is no longer stocking this item. There are some rather negative reviews here, but I think if you can find this machine for a good price, it would be worth it. Between DVDs and tapes, I've used it fairly heavily for a year. I definitely recommend it.
- Like other reviewers, I find that the unit is extremely finicky when playing DVDS, to the point of being unwatchable. I have an 8 year old, bottom of the line DVD player that plays better than this. I feel like it was a big waste of money. Since I don't watch a lot of movies, I unfortunately lived with it well beyond the warranty period. Looks like I'll need to junk it. I think rather than go for a combo DVD/VCR, I'm going to go with a DVD Changer, replace my CD Changer, and just plug in an old VCR for those rare times that I'd use it.

- Do Not Buy this t.v Terrible!!! The lcd screen went! Never will buy one of their products again! Buyer beware!
- My wife and I own a 23" Initial LCD HDTV w/built in DVD player for our bedroom. We really enjoy it. The picture is clear, and I've never had any poblems with the DVD player. The one problem I had, however, is with the remote. I was told that the remote codes would never be compatible with US codes for some reason, and I took that for granted. One day, out of curiosity, I googled Initial TV remote codes. I found on Universal Remotes website a query engine, and I put in Initial. The results displayed "1990." I punched it in and voila! We now only have one remote in the bedroom. So try that code if you own Initial, it will work.
Back to the TV. My friend owns an electronics store in town, and he's had this 26" tv on display and playing for two years. It has always been rock solid and the picture is bright and clear. I use CC and what I like is you can remove the black from the captioning and view the CC with white letters only. I like the clean design and the speakers sound nice. I'm hard of hearing but I can hear the treble just fine. And it sounds good for bedroom use listening to DVD's or concerts at a lower volume.
Before you judge this brand please go somewhere where you can see it. I like the Initial brand and wish I got this one instead of the 37" Olevia we got. By the way, another weird thing: for some reason, because of the shape of the screen on Initial tv's, their pictures seem much larger than they actually are. I don't know what the difference is, but they look larger and the color and resolution are great.
- We have the 23" version of the tv/dvd combo...and love it. The only issue we've found is not being able to program our cable tv remote to this tv...not compatible. We have to use 2 remotes (one to change channels and one for on/off and volume). Other than that, we are thrilled with our purchase. We've had the tv for 2 years now without a hitch.
- The TV which was received was not the one pictured in the Amazon ad nor
described in the description. The TV received had speakers underneath and not on the sides. The ad noted that the TV had frame by frame capability which the one received did not. Discount Jungle offered a $20 refund or to take it back at my expense (over $50) I seem to be stuck with it.

- Thought I got a great deal on this unit for under $300 brand new at a local electronics-chain store. Setup the unit, everything seemed fine after a DVD test drive. I got the cable run and the TV quality was poor, but it was expected for this no frills system. Connected a set of headphones into the headphone jack and that was the end of it. No sound at all (either headphone or built-in speakers). The remote is also terrible...no range and you must be directly in front of the unit for it to respond. Audiovox support is of no help.
- After 6 months of using this product I still enjoy the look of it and the quality of image, as well as the possibility of watching dvd, vcd, cable and antenna tv, and even listening to cds on it. It's true that the sound quality and volume are not great, but for a bedroom or kitchen tv the product does just fine. The remote isn't bad at all, lots of functions, settings angles, zoom, etc, all is there, in a card like format, light and it even comes with colors to help identify functions. I have played many dvd formats, including computer burnt stuff, most of them work here, which is a plus for this unit. Overall I'm happy with the product.
- Great price but the changing channels on the remote control seems slow. Also the remote control strength seems to be very weak even after I changed the batteries. Also the uasability of changing channels is not great. I am using this in the kitchen and it does the job it is also nice to have the built in DVD player so I get to have a DVD player in my kitchen with out taking up more counter space. Also sometime the TV does not work and needs to be "rebooted" unplugged from the outlet.
Bottom line is it is a good choice if you don't mind the inconviences and don't want to spend alot of money otherwise I would not recommend it.
