- Using a DVD-RW (Not DVD+RW) ver1.1/ 2x speed it works great and is re-recordable and simple. Haven't found a DVD-R that works with it yet (it tells you in the manual which ones will work but I just couldn't find the DVD-R of the correct write speed in stores). Recording works instantly (like a VCR) but takes between 20secs to a minute after recording is stopped to write to disc.
- it works fine . but have to choose right type of dvd . just a few type dvd recordable is compatible with this dvd recorder .
- This is a very good recorder with strong editing capabilities. Both the DVD-R & RW format disks offer track-editing options suitable for basic or more event-specific recordings from several sources. Recording from VHS often rewards you with a quality that in fact appears better than the original.
It has a quirk regarding the cooling fan which is easy to circumvent. What you can not work around however is its inability to function outside of 4X media. Though you may have an easier time with 2X or 1X, the proper media is DVD-R 4X (MAX) 4.7GB for this machine. You will not find this information easy to come by otherwise. Such 4X disks appear close to extinction, as they have often been replaced in catalogs and on shelves by 1x-8x disks -- DO NOT BUY THESE -- which are not compatible with this machine. There are no firmware upgrades available for this model.
If you have a stack of 4X max. disks on hand or know a source that can provide you with such media, then you will be quite satisfied. Without a firmware upgrade however, this recorder will soon suffer a fate not unlike death.
- I just bought two. These machines replaced an old, very poor Phillips DVD recorder and all the VHS machines. Picture is great. I found it easy to use and had no problems with 1x, 2x, and 4x DVD-R's and 1x-2x DVD-RW's and they played fine in other DVD players. I don't know where the other reviewers shop, but I had little trouble finding both DVD-R's and DVD-RW's for this machine online AND at Office Depot, CompUSA, Staples, Best Buy and even Big Lots, and all at reasonable prices (CompUSA having the best selection and prices). It also played a variety of DVD+R's, DVD-R's, DVD-RW's, and regular DVD's. It did play a DVD+R/DL, but only one with just the movie and no menus (store bought DVD's played just fine). Tuner and timer recording work great and menus are easy to navigate. Like most Sharp products, the remote is ergonomic and easy to use.
Sure, DVD's and formatting takes quite a while and reading takes a few seconds, but nothing longer than my expensive Pioneer Elite DV-37. And it is a change from VHS, but this is not a lifetime product. I do think it is a big improvement over past DVD products.
- Absoulute garbage. I should have know better that to go Sharp so it serves me right that this DVD "recorder" only succesfully records half of the time and the other half it steals your money for the blank DVDs you buy.
I've had this thing for a year and a half and it's been nothing but trouble. There is no indication on the packaging that only 4X DVDs are required. After you search and search and finally find 4X DVDs(I had to get mine online) this thing turns half of them into coasters. No matter what brand DVD-R you use, it will only work half the time and you won;t know until after you think you've finished the recording.
And if it's after 90 days, forget it. Sharp charges you to send it to them, for a diagnostics, and estimate and repair.
The worst thing I ever bought in my entire life.

- I bought this unit and it worked great for about a month. Thank goodness I bought an extended service plan. It started having what looked like signal disruption lines going through the pictures. I would click stop and then play gain and it would be fine for a little while. It also began sticking on the subtitles. The movie would go on with the subtitles still stuck at the previous clips. The last thing it started doing was moving very slow frame by frame on its own. I would have to forward it to get past it. These were brand new DVDs that played fine on my cheap $40 player. I took it back and would have been happy trying another but the store was out of stock and the item is discontinued so they offered me a Panasonic DMR-ES35V. So far so good with this one. It's working great and the remote is a lot easier to use.
- I bought this to copy VHS to DVD. I thought is was high quality because it cost so much. VHS player is terrible quality. So I don't use it for that. It finalizes recordings for half an hour. I'm stuck with it. I won't buy Sony again because I feel ripped off. DVD fast-forward and rewind is ridiculously slow.
- I purchaced the $600 sony 6 onths before this one and they work just as well. This peice is a bargin.
- This unit worked flawlwssly yntil 3 weeks befor the warranty expired. Then
a bad disc hung up in a continuous "Load" function. After the usual support "fal-der-all", I received a "Work Order No.", so off to Laredo it
went for what, I thought, was a simple-enough repair. When I checked thsir repair search site, I found that there was a repair estimate, "for a unit supposedly still in warranty". After tracking through the corporate phone system, I finally was connected to a rather snotty twerp
who informed me that, becaise cigar ashes had been found in the drive, the warranty was voided. When I received a copy of the repair estimate, I
found that repairs were going to cost $459.66 (I only paid $269.89 for the
unit, brand new). I'm waiting to see what sort of trash they return to me.
By the way, I don't smoke cigars !! As I stated , it worked fine, but--!!

- Bought this video cassette/DVD recorder because it was a Sony. BIG mistake! What a total piece of junk. Sony should be ashamed of duping their customers like this. The VCR recording quality is terrible: murky and the sound is tinny and muted. The DVD recording manuel would take a NASA scientist to understand and then, when you finally do figure out the instructions and follow them to the letter, sometimes the DVD recorder records, and other times gets locked into the "Loading" function and simply won't read or record a DVD at all. The timer for DVD recordings is unreliable and as stated before, sometimes it records and others it does not. As others have stated, the dubbing function from VHS to DVD does not result in clear DVDs and sometimes won't work at all. I would give this product ZERO stars if I could. Do not buy this product!

- I had my unit for several months and I finally took a hammer to it. It is a shame that our government can't protect the consumer from being exploited by companies like Panasonic that make crap like this DVD recorder. It often would "hang-up" and impossible to get the discs in or out -- the little door simple would not open. I have spent up to 30 minutes tryng to get it to record on a disc and ended in failure. I have recorded on several occasions long movies only to have the unit crash near the end and have to re-record my program (another 3 hours). It is the most frustrating piece of electronics I have ever owned. It is a rip-off !
- I have owned this recorder for several months and found it to be the most frustrating piece of electronics I own (including my computers). I finally took a hammer to the unit and it felt so good! I have on several occasions tried to record long movies and have this unit "crash" near the very end (forcing me to re-record the movie and spending another 3 hours). I have often spent much time getting this unit to record to a disc -- restarting the recording process after a crash -- perhaps as much as one out of four recrodings. Often I cannot get the unit to open and give access to discs that have crashed. (The on/off button has no over-ride, like a computer, to reset memory.) I have been using Memorix blank DVD's and would suspect that they are of fairly good quality -- yet I probably lose 10 to 20 out of a 100. I must wonder if the hard drive isn't just too wimpy to be a good recorder. The manual says that it may be necessary to clean the lens for the laser. I ordered a panasonic lens cleaner for over $30 (they sell the same type of device at Wal-Mart for $9) and cleaning the lens has no effect on performance. I will not be buying any more Panasonic products for some time to come. This is a rip-off.

- Easy to use and record. The quality of the recording is perfect. I converted all my Hi8 tapes to DVD and able to play on all kind of DVD players. I was also able to create the menu on my recorded Disk. It won't record the movies, If they are copy protected, otherwise you can record the movies from TV.
- I bought this recorder to keep movies and shows I had recorded from my Ultimate TV (similar to TIVO). At first it did okay, failing about 25% of the time. It started having a higher and higher failure rate using the same types of discs. I have tried many brands of disc and had the same results. It is especially bad with long recordings over 3 hours. The failure rate now is probably 80-90%. I will not be buying another Panasonic audio/video product.
- I have the earlier DMR E50 and I have just taken the lid off to see if there is anything an engineer can fix in the troublesome peice of expensive kit. Its sort of reassuring to see so many others here who had had EXACTLY the same problems...the machine crashes, locks up, can't recover even by pulling the power out, just because it dosn't like a disc, but then it won't let you get the disc out. It has consumed hours and hours of my time. It will only work with Panasonic discs..nothing else.... but now after 12 months it is just more and more choosy about exactly which disc...indeed it is now no use at all. £400 down the drain, I used to like Panasonic. Don't buy it.

- I don't know if I only got a really bad apple, but this one is a JUNK!!! Amazon rips me off with this crap big time!! 30-day warranty is not enough for refurbished products for electronics. Sure, this junk operates OK during the 1st couple of weeks although showing some signs of hidden defects. But after the 30 day warranty lapsed, everything went berserk. I won't be surprised it this junk will explode one of this days!!! You wont buy this product even for a penny!!
- I spent considerable time installing this unit in my system..After several frustrating hours..trying to unlock the disc slot I discovered that the unit would not open.. Sent the unit back using the very efficient return system prpovidedby Amazon. Did NOT replace the unit
- Unit didn't work from day one out of the box. Unit froze in "hello" mode.
Complete resets didn't fix the problem.
On a positive note, Amazon made it right with a full refund.
- This player was very difficult to understand. It isn't for someone who wouldn't be able to set the time on a VCR. I returned it.

- OK, this won't allow me to rate less than 1 star, but I'd give it a "0"..at the most. Well,I just wrote a review and I don't see it, so here it goes again. This company absolutely sucks and their products are junk..you'll be throwing your money away. My DVD player stopped working after 3 months. Visit the forum at their web site (sungale.com) and you'll see what I'm talking about. Don't be swindled out of your money because the product is cheap..CHEAP GARBAGE INDEED!!!
- This player is unreliable at best. Often, When you close the disc tray it doesn't slide all the way back in so the player can't read the disc. I actually have to open the tray door and push the tray into place. Also, It will play a disc just fine one day, and the next the same disc skips, freezes, loses audio, etc. Maybe it has overheating issues but I don't really care. Any player that takes away from your viewing enjoyment isn't worth the money at any price.
- It can play Asian DVDs! I just bought the Seven Swords from ebay and my friends and my own dvd players all can not play the disc. I bought this so called code free dvd player from a local merchant. Wow, it is good! Plays fine! For $40, I really couldn't find another one. Simple and easy to use. Very stylish. Slim and small!
- Well, I don't like this dvd player as much as the previous reviewer does. It's certainly not as good as the brand name sony, panasonic, and JVC. But as for the price, it's really a good deal. I think it can play DVDs with any region code except for region 2? I am not sure, I haven't tried region 2 dvds yet. But for $40, it's either Daewoo or Sungale. I think Sungale is a bit better.
- This is one sunny DVD player to attest to the name Sungale, it provides the picture quality I need, without any synchronization problems with video and sound, and can play all of my regional movies. And I can carry it to my friend's houses easily.
I use a Sony HD DVD Player for my main and this one for my secondary.

- The only reason I gave it one star is because there isn't a negative star to give.
I spent 3 days trying to make this thing work right and called tech support 3 times...still junk.
The sound was out of sync and the picture jumps and apparently can't be corrected. I updated my drivers, uninstalled and then reinstalled. Finally on the third call to tech support the tech himself told me that this was a common problem with this product.
Don't waste your money nor time.
- This is easily one of the worst products I've ever bought for my computer. Complete waste of time. I should have known I was in for a long day when the installer hung on the 2nd disc and I had to download a patch from the vendor's website. Never a good sign. I've already wasted an entire day on this lame product so I don't feel like going into too much detail but if all you want to do is capture video to your harddrive then this product works great. However, if you actually want to convert that video into a DVD then you're in for a frustrating time. I've got a decent system with core 2 duo processor and 2GB of RAM so I blame buggy software for the constant application lock ups (or the endless looping). I eventually gave up and just tried to create iso files I could burn to DVD later and the software couldn't even handle that. If I'd done maybe 5min of research beforehand I would have discovered that a lot of others have had a bad experience with the software.
Sure it's cheap but how much is your time worth? If you actually decide to buy this product make sure you can easily return it (like I did). I would pay five times what this product cost for something that would actually work.
- Horrible software - what looks like an easy plug and play product ended up being buggy and unable to deliver anything. After multiple discussions with their tech support (friendly yet ineffectual), numerous re-installs and upgrades, the product still wouldn't work, leading once to a total crash of my system.
And before you ask, I am computer literate and run a new Dell Windows XP system with twice the recommended system requirements that the product advices.
VERY DISAPPOINTING
- This product was never able to capture audio from VCR or digital video camera. Video was jumpy and not smooth. Spoke to tech support four times to get a resolution on the audio capture and they were not help. Tech support is NOT a toll-free call. Find something else.

- Hello seller, i have much intrest in buying this your item so i will want you to get back to it if it is still available for sale..
- Granted, this product records well, but everything seems to take forever. I stand around waiting for startup, I stand around even longer for Open/Close (that's what really gets to me). And now, after 8 months, every other disc I play makes a tremendous noise, as though it is off balance.
Don't do it! Shop around.
- There are so many things wrong with this deck, but these are the three things that are most infuriating to me:
1. If you burn a DVD on an Apple computer using iMovie, and you try to play it on this machine, it won't work.
2. When you press the eject button, it takes literally about 5 seconds for the tray to come out. I've owned cheapo, $50 DVD players that operated more smoothly. Everything on this one seems to take longer, as if the machine is thinking about things before it decides to do what you want it to do.
3. If you want to use the DV-to-DVD feature -- that is, burning a DVD from a DV camera hooked up by Firewire -- be prepared to have LOTS of failed discs. I've spent several afternoons just trying to get one smooth burn of a DV tape.
I've had pretty good luck recording stuff directly from cable TV, but that's the only reliable feature. And if you think about it, that's the bare minimum that this machine is supposed to do.
You'd think that Philips, with its solid history of DVD technology, would make a better machine.
I bought this model brand new at a Target store. Shame on Target for even stocking it.
The way I figure it, Philips probably owes me about 50 blank DVDs. What a ripoff.
- I bought this as a replacement for an old DVD player, thinking the record feature might come in handy. It plays DVD's just fine, I agree it is a bit slow as others have mentioned for the loading and such, but not a big deal. Eventually I started using the record feature to record off old tapes and off tv, that's when I discovered all the problems.
1 - the machine would get very hot, I was afraid to use it for too long. I looked around the box, there is no evidence that this "burner" has a fan in it. I have set up an oscillating fan up that blows over my machine to keep it cool now.
2 - The DVDR freezes up sometimes, to the point I have to pull the plug and start over.
3 - Setting the timer record for the tv only works sometimes, leaving me very frustrated when I miss my favorite shows when they are on too late for me. In the times that it did work, there were skips and flutters in the recording when I played it back.
4 - I tried the One Touch Record feature, the red light came on indicating it was recording, but when I woke up and checked the disc, it was blank. Other times it would just stop in the middle of a recording.
5 - Finally I tried recording manually, which usually works, hitting pause myself on the commercials, and when I finished, the disc was blank again.
6 - When using the edit mode,to cut commercials, add chapter markers etc., you have to exit edit mode each time you make a change and it takes 2-5 minutes to return to the menu screen. You can't just turn off the edit menu and keep going.
This DVDR works fine some of the time, but I need a product that works right all the time. So I am very unhappy with this product as a recording device. I thought highly of Philips, but this product definitely did not live up to that expectation.
