  1. I have owned my DVD player for less than 2 years, and this weekend it died. I pushed the stop button and everything locked up. I can now join the mass of people that have had nothing but trouble with this unit. Joy for me!

  2. Add me to the list of poor [people] who owned this product for less than 2 years (but just long enough for the warranty to run out) before expiriencing a complete breakdown. While watching a typical no-thrills DVD I was suddenly left with no sound. Imagine my joy. Choose another unit unless you plan on upgrading within the 2-year lifecycle that many of us have already discovered.

  3. Like a lot of the other reviews the sound went dead and nothing we tried has helped. This thing must have been built with junk components. How else can one explain the high frequency of defective players. Toshiba just lost another customer.

  4. We had this dvd play for less than a year and had to send it out to be repaired. The audio completely went out. About 6 to 8 months later, it went out again. Before that, if you could get the darn thing to turn on, you couldn't get it to shut off. It was a total waste of money and I have totally lost faith in Toshiba dvd players. The next Toshiba we got was the same way, and not even the same model. Don't waste your money!

  5. My SD2700 has always worked fine. My only complaint is that it will not play the DVD+R format (probably because it was built before that was invented?) so I have to go buy DVD-R and rerecord my home movies onto that.

  1. I purchased this 5 Disc DVD player to eliminate two of my console pieces from my audio/video rack. I was hoping that this item would replace my current DVD player & my 5 disc CD player as well.

After about a month or so, I realized you are definitely getting what you pay for. When I purchased this, it was under $100. And that's exactly what it is...a $100 piece of useless electronics.

It ruined 1 of my child's favorite DVD's because the DVD somehow jumped off the spinner and got scratched while spinning on the player's inner electronics. The only way was I was able to get the DVD out of the player was to unscrew the top and remove most the of pieces to remove the DVD.

I've also had problems with skipping & many movies become "pixelated". This DVD player does not like scratches on DVD's or CD's (which caused the pixelation).

I wouldn't recommend this to anyone, and I'll will never purchase any type of Toshiba home audio/video equipment again.

  2. I bought this DVD player brand new. I've never owned anything as buggy as this DVD player. (And indeed, it is in the design of the product because I returned 1 to the Toshiba factory for the problems it was giving me -- only to be given another one that merely gradually developed the exact same problems).
After owning my Toshiba SD-5915 for about 1.5 years now, I just don't even use it anymore because: the movies pause for about 5 seconds, 10 or more times during a single movie viewing; sometimes the movie will not finish, instead freezing up and requires being unplugged from the wall to turn the player off; the remote has few buttons left that work; the picture warps sometimes during the movie; any discs made from a computer or a recorder (like the one that I use to record TV shows) are difficult to get to work -- usually will play partially and stop or just do not start at all (and I esp. cannot rewind or fast forward these because that initiates the frozen pause I discussed above and ends the movies or home movies or whatever on these dvd's immediately.)

Overall? Toshiba damages their reputation with this dvd player. You are throwing your money away if you buy this product.

  3. I got this to stop getting up all the time to change disks in my single DVD player. Now I'm getting up lots more trying to get this to work. Other reviews say it's slow to respond - they aren't kidding. Push "open" to access the tray and it grinds away for ten seconds deciding what to do. More often than not it'll stay closed and go back to the movie. Sometimes (not often) it freezes completely and has to restarted. Being cheap, it doesn't remember where it was and you have to scan through the movie to find your place. Also ultra susceptible to scratches/fingerprints so the picture stops and jumps frequently. Avoid like the plague.

  4. I discounted the bad reviews on this site and bought this DVD/CD player in July. We have been using a sub fifty dollar model for a couple of years and I wanted to replace that and our CD changer with one unit. I wanted to go with Toshiba because we have a Toshiba TV, I thought we could use the new remote with the our old TV and consolidate some remotes.
The first disappointment is the remote control's layout, it is the worst. It's all most unusable.
Then 4 out of 5 DVDs played will freeze. I thought that the rented DVDs were dirty or scratched so I have taken to cleaning them before playing, but the sub fifty dollar DVD has had no problems playing the same DVDs that this player freezes.
Audio CDs play fine, CDRs will skip and pop, the same CDRs will play fine on other systems.
This is the worst purchase I have ever made. Avoid this piece of junk.

  5. I currently have a Toshiba TV and love it. I thought I'd purchase a Toshiba DVD player since I love my TV. I have completely wasted my money on this piece of junk. DVD's skip, remote sometimes does not respond, sometimes a DVD will freeze. I put the same DVDs in another DVD player in my bedroom and they all worked fine with no skips/freezing. As alot of the other reviewers said, I agree.....your just throwing your money away here.

5 comments about Philips DVDR600VR DVD Recorder with VCR.
  1. I've had this unit over a year, and have had LOTS of problems. It conked out shortly after I bought it and had to go back to the factory for over 2 months. Now it has a new set of annoying habits, particularly a loud fan that goes on and off seemingly at random. Look for something else!

  2. I am totally frustrated with the Philips DVDR600VR. I recorded exactly 2 DVDs before it quit working. Now I can't get it to either read or record a DVD. The remote is awful as the unit responds to the commands at an extremely slow pace. A complete waste of over $300. Now I have to send it in for repair.

  3. I liked the unit when I first received it, but really only used it a dozen times within a year and a half. My daughter went to use it the other day and told me it wasn't working, as usual I thought it was something she was doing wrong. I looked at it and said you have to turn the power on my dear for the unit to work, she just looked at me and walked away. Two hours later I was still trying to turn the power on, it was dead with no signs of life. Not sure what happenend but all of my other electronics were working fine, so I ruled out any kind of lighting strike. Of course I was a few months out of warranty and when I called a Phillips representative to find out where I could take it to get repaired he just told me to take it to Best Buy. I didn't even know Best Buy repaired electronics, I don't think they do. Overall I would say now this is a bad experience since I paid $386 for the unit and barely used it at all, now I have to get it repaired or just junk it. So stay away and buy a Sony, that is what all my other electronic toys are and some I had for about 20 yrs and are still working fine and never purchased an extended warranty either.

  4. Job one for a DVD player (even one that records on DVD and VHS) is to play what you've recorded, and to play your DVDs. Good luck getting this hunk of junk to play your store-bought DVDs. Half the time, when offering you a menu, it will not highlight the menu items so you can't actually choose anything. Which of course brings your viewing to an abrupt end.

As to recording, this thing does not allow you to dub digitally from an outside source to the DVD player. So much for the wonder of digital imagery.

I'm very unhappy with the machine -- I'd say you should avoid it.

  5. BEWARE: DVDs are non-standard & incompatible

I am bitterly disappointed with the Philips DVDR-3400 recorder, and suppose that all of its line has the same problems.

I did not find out until I had burned 300+ DVDs that the disk directory structure created by these Phillips machines is defective. The main title on the disk you make will appear to "play" on your home DVD player... but ALL of the post-recording edits made (cutting out parts you didn't want etc.) are LOST.

AND most PC-based DVD players and other software won't handle the disk, so if you wrote your home movies to disk for long-term archiving, you're out of luck.

I don't know how a company the size of Phillips can release such a piece of [...]. They HAD to know of these problems. I am sick to think of the time I have lost. All I have is junk to show for it. And yes, I did everything right (finalizing the disks etc).

Add to this the terrible remote control with rubbery, no-feedback keys that often don't work; little provision for using the deck for playback, etc. etc. (read other's complaints) and you have a real loser here.

I bought my first Phillips tape recorder in 1968. I will never buy another Phillips product.

  1. I've owned a DVD S2500 since July. Sometime within the last two months the audio and video on commercial DVDs have gone out of sync. This is most noticeble at the start of a disk, but seems to improve later. I don't think that this happened when the player was brand new. I use the HDMI output to a Denon receiver. Looks like I will have to return the player for factory service. I'd be interested to know if anyone else has experienced this problem.

  2. I just bought Yamaha player for Xmas.
    It has great sound quality.
However, it fails to track some (not all) CDs and makes loud noise as laser pick-up is trying to adjust itself.
As the other review indicates, this problem is worse at the beginning of discs and improves for later tracks.
Have to take it factory service.
    Disappointed.

  3. I had the DVD-2300 unit which preceeded this unit and found the picture and sound quality excellent. Based on this experience I purchased the 2500 without a real review or test drive... Big mistake.

$39 DVD players track discs better... You do have time to make popcorn while the unit attempts to recognize a disc.

Picture quality good but not outstanding... Audio was excellent. Sync problems... How could Yamaha release a dog like this to the market.

Yamaha will never get my money again... Total junk.

  4. Yamaha touts this as a universal player however it has a very hard time tracking dvd-rs, SACD and other formats. I hope yamaha has worked out the bugs on the newer dvd-s2700. by the way, my player is back at the repair shop for the 4th time in 3 months. let's hope Yamaha corrects this situation

  5. In shop many times, takes long time to read disc sometimes won't read at all says " no disc" finally told me board was bad after warranty was up. Yamaha service sucks
