5 comments about Samsung DVD-P721M Progressive-Scan DVD Player.
- Wanted to purchase a progressive scan DVD player and settled on this one because of the great price. Bought it middle of February and have had no problems with it so far. Picture quality is great, easy install, able to play all DVD's and CD's in my collection so far, including burned CD's. I haven't been able to test out the memory stick capabilities yet but nice option to have. If you are in the market for progressive scan DVD under $..., I would recommend this one. It's sleek, compact and easy to hook up. The main remote is a little clunky with the toggle selector but a minor design flaw.
- This DVD player played my DVDs just fine, but it had big problems with Audio CDs and Photo CDs.
For DVDs, it works well. The remote is very well laid out, so I can keep my eyes on the TV while I'm using the remote. (All remotes should be this well designed.) Unfortunately, the joystick (which takes the place of the directional buttons) is a bit unreliable. I often have to jiggle it to get it to go they way I'm pushing it. This is annoying, but it has a second "mini" remote with ordinary buttons that work fine. Still, switching between two remotes is annoying. The most useful feature is the "Instant Replay" button, which I LOVE. If I miss a bit of dialog because of room noise, I just hit instant replay, and it jumps back ten seconds. For Photo CDs, it's pretty bad. It takes forever to load the pictures, and the controls for zooming and panning are so amazingly awkward to use that they're not worth it. For Audio CDs, it's completely unacceptable. It cuts off the last two seconds of each audio track. You may not notice this on a lot of tracks because the song fades out or has two or three seconds of silence anyway, but for songs that play to the end if the track it's infuriating. I had to take it back. I never used the memory stick or progressive scan, so I can't comment on them. I couldn't get the 3D audio to do anything. If you're not interested in playing audio or photo CDs, it's a perfectly acceptable DVD player with a good remote control. But for audio and JPEG, it stinks.
- Progressive scan never worked correctly from day one. Didn't want
to get into shipping back and forth to the repair center, so bought a Panasonic replacement (that works perfectly) and threw the Samsung unit in with my soup cans and bottles for recycling. Never again Samsung, ... never again ...
- My personal review on the Samung Progressive Scan would be the mulit-cabliblites of the pro- scan DVD from Screen to DVD. The over all clarity of the progressive scan is next to the top ten next with the Sony DVD and Video Progressive-Scan, and the Philips. Although, the following questions of it's mulit-usage, maybe , How would this product work with my entertainment system quailty and or Is this product able to be used with my pc or audio system?" Yes, to both the Audio and Visual question being that during the actual connection process is so simple a child could program the Samsung Progressive Scan. In closing wether dealing with a simple digital camera to the a Kitchen Mixer , I rate from personal usage of this product at the highest a 10.
Thank You

- Worst DVD player I have every encountered. Not even worth the $39 price. DVDs don't play, remote only works if you stand inches from the player. Absolutely awful. Mine works occasionally, but I am just going to throw it in the trash as I can replace with a good player for little money now.
Do not recommend!
Update. It is now in the trash.

- Although this was a great price and great picture, my kids could barely hear the sound at full volume over regular car noise. I'm returning it for a model that accomodates 3 pairs of headphones.

- This DVD recorder works fine as documented. The problem is it will only write on older DVD-R and DVD-RW media which are either hard to find or expensive. The fastest DVD-R supported is 4X, DVD-RW is 2X. DVD-R rated at 8X and slower will not work. No firmware updates for faster media are planned.
- I've had this recorder for a little over a week and it works flawlessly, including recordering on DVD-R 8x Media. I actually bought a batch of DVD-R 4x, figuring it would not work on 8x media, based on the manual and the one reviewer. However, I decided to test out an 8x and it worked just fine.
I bought this because my LiteOn LVW-5005 started to act up and fail on the finalization of discs when it was not the fault of the disc. At this early stage, I feel the Funai is a better machine. The test of time might prove otherwise, but for now that is my conclusion.

- I recently purchased this tv because my daughter, her husband, their two young children and I were going on a 3,000 mile car trip. We stocked up on DVD's, put the tv and the kids in the back seat of my minivan, and had a glorious trip. No complaints from the kids! I now plan on taking it to my gift/sandwich shop so that my customers can enjoy the DVD's as they sip their coffee or eat lunch.
- I bought this system for one reason and one reason only: Entertain the kids in the car. I really did not care about the picture or sound quality. I just wanted something small to fit in the car and that I could easily haul around. To my surprise the picture is crystal clear and the sound of the system is awesome. You can probably find cheaper systems, but you cannot go wrong with this one. I would not trade my TV/DVD combo for anything.
- We bought this set for a 36 hour family trip. We have a van so I wanted a little larger screen so the kids could see in the back. When you compare the price with portable players or built-in decks this was great.
We set the TV between the driver seats in our Chrysler Town & Country. I had to remove the passenger side arm rest so it would fit. I built a small stand to raise the TV up about 16 inches. The screen was very clear. During our travels it never skipped. One nice feature is the resume play mode. When we would stop for food or gas we would turn the power off the TV. Then when we were back on the road we would simply hit the power button and it would resume where we left off. One concern I had was heat. (With it sitting between us) That was not a problem, but we did have air-condiditioning on most the trip. It only has one headphone jack. We have 3 kids. So I bought a headphone splitter. Because of the rounded case around the headphone jack I had to modify the headphone jack with a grinder to get it to fit. All in all this television did everything I asked of it and more and kept the kids happy for about and an hour and a half at a time.
- I bought this unit like-new...with the intention of using it in my SUV on weekend trips. It has turned into not only a great system for my car (even hooks into my car stereo via the easily accessible headphone jack), but a great 2nd TV/DVD for my small house.
The unit works great, the controls intuitive, and a plus for "folks like me who tend to lose stuff like remotes" is that the DVD menus are navigable via the controls on the unit. In-Car, I havent noticed any DVD skipping while the car was in motion. Sound quality on the unit's speaker is adequate for an enclosed room, and played through my car speakers via the headphone jack, it gives the impression that I'm in a state of the art theatre. If you're in the market, this TV/DVD combo is perfect.
- I've had one for a few years and the dvd is gradually working less. I get a "no disk" messege when I put in a normal dvd and it take at least an hour of trying to get it to work. The tv part still works

- I actually have an earlier model Samsung DVD player, and it, along with other Samsung models at the time, and models STILL BEING PRODUCED, had a horrible skipping problem on many DVDs (just check out some of the other cusomter reviews here on Amazon). Samsung's support was almost non-existant -- I found out there was a firmware upgrade for the player, but not through their website (where I couldn't find any help whatsoever), but through a friend with the same problem. HOWEVER, the firmware upgrade did not resolve the problem, and the last I heard, there was a class action suit filed here in Pennsylvania (which I received an invitiation to be a part of, but could not participate in, I think because I no longer had the receipt). Considering their lackluster customer support, I would advise anyone against buying any DVD player from this company. Players are much cheaper nowadays anyway, and you can get an excellent Sony or Toshiba for a modest price.
- This has to be the most frustrating thing I've bought. The first one I had was aweful - wouldn't play a disc or anything - so I return it and get a new one, which worked fine for about two months and then starts with noise in the screen on playback - and now won't record or playback. I'd return it for service - but that has to be a waste of my time. Don't buy this. I've ordered a Toshiba.
