  1. I actually have an earlier model Samsung DVD player, and it, along with other Samsung models at the time, and models STILL BEING PRODUCED, had a horrible skipping problem on many DVDs (just check out some of the other cusomter reviews here on Amazon). Samsung's support was almost non-existant -- I found out there was a firmware upgrade for the player, but not through their website (where I couldn't find any help whatsoever), but through a friend with the same problem. HOWEVER, the firmware upgrade did not resolve the problem, and the last I heard, there was a class action suit filed here in Pennsylvania (which I received an invitiation to be a part of, but could not participate in, I think because I no longer had the receipt). Considering their lackluster customer support, I would advise anyone against buying any DVD player from this company. Players are much cheaper nowadays anyway, and you can get an excellent Sony or Toshiba for a modest price.

  2. This has to be the most frustrating thing I've bought. The first one I had was aweful - wouldn't play a disc or anything - so I return it and get a new one, which worked fine for about two months and then starts with noise in the screen on playback - and now won't record or playback. I'd return it for service - but that has to be a waste of my time. Don't buy this. I've ordered a Toshiba.

  1. This thing started out fine for about 6 months, but now operation is very erratic, it can't read certain discs. Some of these are prerecorded discs, and some are discs that used to play in this player a few months ago! The error I get is "DISC ERROR" or "NO DISC".

  2. I've had mine for a couple years now & I'm still very pleased with it! I've backed up alot of VHS tapes with this onto DVD, & it has very good video noise reduction!

  1. Hello seller, i have much intrest in buying this your item so i will want you to get back to it if it is still available for sale..

  2. Granted, this product records well, but everything seems to take forever. I stand around waiting for startup, I stand around even longer for Open/Close (that's what really gets to me). And now, after 8 months, every other disc I play makes a tremendous noise, as though it is off balance.

    Don't do it! Shop around.

  3. There are so many things wrong with this deck, but these are the three things that are most infuriating to me:

    1. If you burn a DVD on an Apple computer using iMovie, and you try to play it on this machine, it won't work.

    2. When you press the eject button, it takes literally about 5 seconds for the tray to come out. I've owned cheapo, $50 DVD players that operated more smoothly. Everything on this one seems to take longer, as if the machine is thinking about things before it decides to do what you want it to do.

    3. If you want to use the DV-to-DVD feature -- that is, burning a DVD from a DV camera hooked up by Firewire -- be prepared to have LOTS of failed discs. I've spent several afternoons just trying to get one smooth burn of a DV tape.

I've had pretty good luck recording stuff directly from cable TV, but that's the only reliable feature. And if you think about it, that's the bare minimum that this machine is supposed to do.

You'd think that Philips, with its solid history of DVD technology, would make a better machine.

I bought this model brand new at a Target store. Shame on Target for even stocking it.

The way I figure it, Philips probably owes me about 50 blank DVDs. What a ripoff.

  4. I bought this as a replacement for an old DVD player, thinking the record feature might come in handy. It plays DVD's just fine, I agree it is a bit slow as others have mentioned for the loading and such, but not a big deal. Eventually I started using the record feature to record off old tapes and off tv, that's when I discovered all the problems.

1 - the machine would get very hot, I was afraid to use it for too long. I looked around the box, there is no evidence that this "burner" has a fan in it. I have set up an oscillating fan up that blows over my machine to keep it cool now.
2 - The DVDR freezes up sometimes, to the point I have to pull the plug and start over.
3 - Setting the timer record for the tv only works sometimes, leaving me very frustrated when I miss my favorite shows when they are on too late for me. In the times that it did work, there were skips and flutters in the recording when I played it back.
4 - I tried the One Touch Record feature, the red light came on indicating it was recording, but when I woke up and checked the disc, it was blank. Other times it would just stop in the middle of a recording.
5 - Finally I tried recording manually, which usually works, hitting pause myself on the commercials, and when I finished, the disc was blank again.
6 - When using the edit mode,to cut commercials, add chapter markers etc., you have to exit edit mode each time you make a change and it takes 2-5 minutes to return to the menu screen. You can't just turn off the edit menu and keep going.

This DVDR works fine some of the time, but I need a product that works right all the time. So I am very unhappy with this product as a recording device. I thought highly of Philips, but this product definitely did not live up to that expectation.

  1. This is a nice DVD Player, but this is a discontinued product and the SD-9100 is the new one which replace the SD-9000. The SD-9100 is a excellent DVD player and I give it 5 stars

  2. I purchased the SD-9000 when it was still selling at its regular (and high) price. It is a superb, industrial strength (heavy!) DVD player. Picture quality and sound are outstanding. The only downside was the price, which is now much lower. So, if you want a top quality unit, go for it at the reduced price.

  3. Outstanding picture quality. Very easy to use with a lot of features. Sound quality is very good (but not oustanding, that's why the 4 stars and a half) when compared to my YBA CD player. To fully take advantage of this excellent DVD player, do not hesitate to spend for audio and video cables (I use Wireworld interconnects for the Audio and XLO for the S-Video). The difference well designed cables can make is just AMAZING!

  1. Great unit. Great quality. Good price.

I only wish it did stills (JPEGs). Error correction good on disks with bad/corrupted missing blocks. I have a DVD I tried to rip on my PC. Software caught the bad block on defective disk and halted, yet the Harman Kardon DVD doesn't skip a single frame when it same disk at the same spot.

The weight of this unit is almost twice that of a comparable JVC XV-s502/s500 I purchased as a gift. Really sturdy! Great price for a component quality DVD. All the mass- market units range about $129-$179 at discount or instead the higher end component DVD's all start around $500/$600/$700+ and many don't play MP3's, CD-RW's and other formats. This is a good mid-point price, component, value choice. Great features, great audio/video, Test picture to adjust TV quality, Mutli-function remote, Harman Kardon quality are all plusses!

Paid about $269 at local discout electronics store. Nice appearance - mix of black w/ silver trim, looks expensive.

  2. Recently my Pioneer DVD player died after several years of use. One of the main reasons I liked that player was it seemed to play everything I asked DVD, CD, VCD, SVCD.

When looking for a new player I wanted to get a Progressive Scan to use with my HD Panasonic Big Screen. I bought a Samsung DVD player but it did a very poor job playing my VCDs created using ULead DVD picture show. The picture was good ,but the audio was too fast.

I read some reviews of the HK and decided to jump at it since most reviews said it would play anything you throw at it. The truth is that it does! MP3, CD-RW, CD-R, VCD, SCVD and of course your DVDs.

First thing you will notice about the player is the weight. It feels like the solid product that it is. If you want to use the Progressive Scan you will need to change the settings. That is made easy through an On-Screen guide. The DA converters even have settings so you can make sure they match best through your AV receiver. It has a Test feature where you can make sure all your settings are correct for the best picture possible. This gives you a quick way to fine-tune your TV's brightness, contrast, and color settings

The picture is clear and the player makes almost no noise. It does a great job with CD music too. I don't use my Sony changer as much anymore.

  3. This machine is solid, performs well, and very easy to use. I highly recommend if you're sick of spending hundreds of dollars on equipment that seems as if it was made in a toy factory.

  4. Let me first say that all DVD players are not created equal. I once thought so until I bought a top-of-the-line 57" HDTV rear projection television.

I tried an older JVC DVD player and a newer Sony Progressive Scan DVD player, and both players performed poorly...neither had video processors srong enough to carry a sharp image across a large screen area.

I decided to go with the Harmon Kardon DVD-25; the picture was and continues to be extremely satisfying, and it is a nice looking unit. As has been mentioned by other reviewers, the HK DVD-25 plays a variety of formats.

I would be lying to you if I told you it was the best; there are other DVD players out there that go for even more Benjamins than DVD-25 and likely perform better (such as Denon models and some Onkyo models), but if you're on a budget and you need a high-end DVD player that can muscle a sharp image onto a large HDTV, then Harmon Kardon is the way to go.

  5. I have used several DVD players but this is by far the best quality of any. Don't believe it when someone says that all DVD players have the same quality picture, it just isn't true.
