  1. I bought this little player for air travel.
Originally, I was looking at the fold open style until I saw this one. The price was right, so I took the chance.

    Great player!
Picture quality is excellent for the size.
No 'fold open' hinges or latches to wear out.
I especially like the design of setting it up like a picture frame stand on the airplane serving tray in front of me.
Battery life so far has been 3:30 to 3:50 which is enough to get through "Return of the King".

The "back of seat" bag (included) looks like it would be quite nice to use in the van. We have a factory DVD player, but now have the option of letting some of the kids watch a DVD while others play N64...with headphones all around.

In short, I am pleased with the quality/value of the player.

  2. To start with, the battery is external. So that ultra compact form factor just got 25% bigger as you must screw the battery pack to the bottom of the unit (it is not shown in the picture). Then, that nice case that lets you attach it to a headrest, well, it fits great without the battery, but with the battery on there is no way to fit it (believe me, I tried). There is a nice built in "stand", it is designed to only be effective when the battery is not installed. The screen quality and external sounds are a bit worse then other units, though not horrible (especially as most of us will use the unit with headphones). Overall this unit was a total disappointment; I rarely write reviews, but I figured I would write something to save people the hassle or a return, I know I wish someone had done that for me.

  3. I purchased this DVD player mainly for use in the car on a long trip with a toddler. I like the tablet style and the bag mounts to the back of a headrest nicely. Overall picture and sound quality are very good for a portable player. Works great with the battery or the ac power cord inside. Barely works AT ALL with the cheap car power adaptor included with the player. Takes many attempts to get it to power the player, a real pain with a squirmy kid in the backseat. I was able to attach the battery, invert the player and invert the picture using the "mode" button for a couple hours, and it fit in the car headrest bag if I didn't fasten the top. Solution: go to Radio shack and get a decent "adaptaplug" and extension cord. Cost about $20, now it works with no problems. Easier for me than messing the warranty hassle from RCA. Overall good, if you don't mind buying an extra car plug.

  4. last week when I bought this at a local retailer for way less than on the internet I was thrilled cause it was cool. Now that I have played a few movies I know why it is cheap(I think) it has the older style read laser which does try very hard to read dvd-r disks however, sometimes it just can't. Out of the 5 movies I have tried to watch 3 of which were store bought it played only one all the way through. Superman. It would not even recognize Highlander the ultimate edition. The ones I tried that were on dvd-r would get about 10 min in and you would think it had paused but then after 2-3 min the movie would start again. I tried all these disks out in another dvd and they played fine. so watch what you buy. Make sure you can take it back. Cause that's where I am going today. ( but I could have gotten a dud you never know):0)

  5. I have a new Panasonic DMR-ES10 DVD burner at home. This thing wouldn't play anything I burned in it. I tried +R and -R formats. You'd better plan on buying lots of DVD's for this one.

  1. I bought this dvd player in spite of some of the negative reviews because I have always had faith in JVC. My faith was rewarded as it plays all the types of dvds as advertised. And, the picture and sound quality is excellent. For a low price, it does a wonderful job.

  2. My mother used to say, "If you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all". Well Mom, this JVC DVD player is certainly Cheap! Sorry Mom, but I feel I've got to warn others that there may be better choices.

My wife bought this DVD player as JVC was considered a good brand & the saleman told her it was. Yes, it played DVDs, but it could not rewind (play backwards) or fast forward. If those buttons were pushed, this JVC DVD player jumped to random places in the DVD. The controller also had to be within a narrow range (reception cone) to work. My previous Panasonic DVD, which died suddenly, could receive almost anywhere. I also had trouble with the closed caption being properly displayed.

Finally, who designed the black buttons on a black background? Even in bright light they were difficult to see & read, let alone the dim light most TV viewing is done in.

Seems like all DVD players now suffer from having to be China-Cheap & are designed to be poorly designed, frustrating, throwaway items.

  3. Ever since I bought it, it has worked improperly. It freezes every 10 seconds or so, then unfreezes, and then the counter resets to zero. Of the 30 or 40 dvds I have tried to watch on it, I only know of 4 dvds that it did not freeze-up on.

Don't bother with the replacement plan! It will cost you just as much time and money packaging and shipping this to the service provider. They will not replace or refund any product until they have attempted to fix it several times.

Don't lose faith in JVC. My other JVC works fine. I'm sure this was damaged in the shipping process. But that is not an expense you want to incur.

  4. I am a long time buyer of JVC products, but lately they seem to be generating nothing but bottom of the line items. I purchased this DVD player when my old JVC DVD player got zapped during a power outage. The old player worked flawlessly for over five years, but this one couldn't even make it through a day. This player skipped and stuttered through every dvd that I tried. I definitely don't recommend this DVD player to anyone.

It's sad to see that a company that used to be my preference for electronics is quickly becoming a company that I will never buy from again.

  5. This particilar DVD player was purchased because my previous JVC DVD player stopped working. It has since started working again, so this one is used primarily as a CD player. It works fine, but the buttons on the unit black, the unit is black, and the labels are a dark subtle color. If you don't have bright light in the room, you can't see which one to push. Back lit labels would be a huge improvement. The unit is surprisingly light and appears cheaply made, but is still working without issue. It's about 9 months old.
