  1. I always think spending 2 grands on a dvd player is outright ridiculous. After researching and drooling over the specs of this Onkyo reference dvd player, I decided to jump into the bandwagon. I placed an order online and spent one sleepless night, "Do I really need to spend this much on a dvd player?"
Got it from Onecall for $1499 (gave me free shipping to keep me from cancelling the order the next day.
All that feeling went away as soon as I received and opened the box. I thought I was picking up a high-end receiver. Dont even try to lift it if you have existing back problem, it weighs a ton. Faceplate is simple yet very attractive. Side panel has bar type stabilizer that'll remind you of a bodybuilders ribcage.
It has an extremely solid construction. You gotta see it in person to appreciate.
Setting up is a breeze. It must have been engineered with end-users in mind. OSD menu is simple and easy to navigate. It comes with an intuitive backlit remote ..sturdy & classy too. This is where Denon could learn a few lessons (they make such a cheap-looking remote controls).
DVD-Audio and SACD performance is mind-blowing using 5.1 channel analog audio. This player even has an extra pair of surround channels for 7.1 set-up. I took the following for a spin: Eagles' Hotel California(DVD-A), Grover Washington's Winelight(DVD-A), Roxy Music Avalon(SACD), and Beck Sea Change(SACD). They all sound very clean, smooth and crystal.
On the video side this baby did not disappoint. I connected the player to my fairly old Sony RP HDTV using HDMI-to-DVI Monster cable( I got it for half price in ebay). Setting the resolution to 1920x1080i 16:9 60Hz, the picture is nothing short of amazing. And this is on default picture settings. I tested the following DVD-Video: Desperado Superbit, North By Northwest and Disney's Jungle Book 2. Colors are vibrant and images are life-like. No jagged edges seen. The player uses O-plus Flexscale video scaling. (Denon 3910 uses Faroudja video scaler but picture quality looks washed out). This unit even features a dedicated connections for your interlaced and progressive scan outputs.
Bonus features (that you always enjoy from cheapo dvd players but missing in high-end units) includes ability to remember point of last disc played, a screen saver and the ability to handle virtually any disc format. I threw in my backup movies recorded in DVD-+R/RW. They all played perfect. And finally it's THX certified if that matters to you.
I called customer support once for some technical question and I was very pleased with their response. Warranty is 1 year parts / 1 year labor -in home service if bought from an authorized dealer.
I rate Onkyo DV-SP1000 5 out of 5 stars for its superb and unsurpassed video and audio performance.

  2. As soon I connected it, I played one of my Jamiroquai CDs in my old CD player and then immediately switched to the Onkyo. The difference was huge. Warm, deep, crisp. All of the musicians were playing now. I loved it. A real audiphile component. Loved it. The delivery from One Call was flawless.

  3. If you are an action movie nutcase then this is a fantastic DVD player. It is able to handle the fast paced action sequences with ease and the HD detail is beyond fantastic in terms of details, colors, crispness, etc. I'll let the other reviews tell you all of the hardware that allows this DVD player to do what it does, but you will definitely love the movie-like feel of action movies.

If you are not an action movie person, but rather just like good movies, I am not sure this DVD player is necessary for you. After all, action is about the picture, while drama is often times about the dialogue. While this DVD player will also make the dialogue sound great, who really needs great sound quality to this level in order to enjoy movies of great dialogue?

I have watched a variety of movies on this player since recently getting it, and the difference in picture and sound is definitely noticable on movies like "I Robot", "Galdiator", etc., while movies like "Family Man" and "Groundhog's Day", may not warrant the cost. I'll leave it up to you as to what type of a movie lover you are, but if you love action movies, you have not really seen them at home until you watch them on a DVD player of this exceptional quality. It is FUNtastik!

  4. purchased this unit sometime back and to the credit of Onkyo, it is the best sounding DVD/SACD player I have ever heard. The picture is near perfect too. I have read where others have had lip sync isssues but I have not encountered this problem. My problem is getting the HDMI to talk to my brand new Sony ES receiver, but the connection will not work. I can connect any other cheap HDMI player to the receiver with no HDMI issues.
I have to connect the Onkyo DV-SP1000 directly to my tv via HDMI.

With that said, I have tried to get support from Onkyo by phone and email. I couldn't even get them to respond to my emails until I sent a nasty message. Finally, they responded to me. I told them my issue and they said they would get back with but never did. All I really wanted was a firmware update that is available for my player. When I called, the support person said that there was no firmware update as far as he could tell. My player has firmware version 1.1 and other people have version 1.2. So how can they say that there is no firmware update? How can you pay $2000 for a DVD player and get absolutley ZERO support? The customer support of Onkyo is by far one of the worst I have ever encountered. If you actually get to talk to someone, they act as though you are bugging them. It is just a nightmare. If you expect customer service, don't buy an Onkyo.
I would actually rate this product a 4 and the customer service a ZERO.

  5. Great player! Plays everything - everywhere!

With a little help from the internet, the US-model can easily be made region free and you can find the latest firmware without bothering the service offices. US-model plays both NTSC and PAL without any problems. With a step down to 120 watt you can use the US-model in Europe. The 60 Hz makes no problems.

  1. For this price, I am just glad it works. And works it does...

  2. I was hesitent to purchase this product, but it works very well. It's quiet, easy to use, has a good picture, and is a great value for your money.

  3. I'm looking to trash this piece of junk as soon as I can find a new cheap DVD player. The door always jams, and it won't play any DVD with the slightest scratch on it. It was a waste of money.

  4. Really the only complaint I have about this player is the noise it makes. When the disc starts loading it sounds like the player might actually lift-off. It also makes noise while the dvd plays. Don't expect this dvd player to be around forever.

  5. this was a great dvd player, had for 13 months and no problems. one day, i moved my tv to a different room and reconnected everything to it. and the green light on the dvd player was not as bright and it kept saying that i had the wrong disc or no disc. i would unhook it and re hook it up and then it would work. this work for a week and then suddenly the green light just faded into nothing and now it is "dead as a door nail". And you can look up do-yourself-repair for this dvd player all you want, you won't find anything. i'm glad this was a gift, because i would have never bought it myself!

  1. I received my refurbished unit from Tigerdirect 3 days ago and so far the unit has performed flawlessly! It arrived with all oem cables, remote, charger and even an original owner's manual. I don't often purchase refurbished products but since I was in the market for a DVD player and didn't want to spend $250-$350........why not take a gamble!!! The only people who win the lottery are the ones that actually play!!! Jackpot!!! I got a great 10" player at a price no new 10" player could be purchased......no scratches or dents, all oem parts, manual, 1yr warranty card(not worth the paper it's printed on, 4 sure). I also picked up a nice Targus case to cuddle this little puppy and tote some DVD's as well. Don't expect superlative sound from the built in speakers but this can be said of all players in this category.....a pair of decent headphones are the way to go. I use a pair of Sennheiser HD555 phones that are simply superb!!!! This is one refurb purchase I'm glad I made and I'm not looking for the other shoe to drop either!!! I figure it was repaired to better than new condition when it got refurbished. I'm a happy camper after 3 days of ownership.......Okay, that's not nice.......I can almost hear you snickering!!! :-)

  2. the service was very quick. when i received the dvd player there was no battery and the dvd player was refurbished. the item was a gift so i had to return it. the return transaction was very quick and i was pleased with the service. when i reread the item description there was no mention of a battery or that it was refurbished. i have dealt with tigerdirect. ca before and not had a problem.

  3. The product I received did not work. I did though receive a quick refund.

  4. I purchase this product on line though Amazon. Com, they advertise this product to be NEW, so I could not beat the price they sold it for, we'll when I got the product, it was used, it did not have the remote controller in it, and it did not work. Of course I am sending it back to Tiger Products, they told me that it was used, I think that is false advertizing, people should really check out the company before they buy product from them on line.

  5. This was a reconditioned dvd player. Advertisement is false when it says new. It plays fine, does not play both through TV and dvd at same tome.

  1. This is a nice dvd player as far as the picture and sound goes. It will play store bought dvds fine but anything that was burned on a dvd recorder whether it was a dvd-r or dvd+r, it would freeze and skip and sometimes get confused. This upset me as the box says it will play DVD-r/rw and DVD+r/rw but I never had any luck.
I returned this after a week of checking out what dvds would play on it and bought a Panasonic 7 inch DVD-LS50 model that will play anything that I have burned on a dvd recorder as that is what I want to watch on it as well as the store bought dvds.

  2. I got this about 8 months ago and I love it. It has super picture quality and the sound is good too. When listening with headphones Im able to adjust the sound, but I wish it would go just a little bit higher. All the DVDs Ive played have played flawlessly. A nice size, too. It is a great unit for the price we paid and Im very happy with it.

  3. Poor replay---skips---freezes and emmits noises from inside as if confused. If I could reach the seller, I`d ask for an upgrade since I want to be able to play all types of discs as described on the box. I have a large number of archived DVD's on DVD+/-R and RW discs which this thing just freezes up on. One of the other reviewers has given me a source for a substitute....chuckonechuck@bellsouth.net

  4. My husband bought me this player so I could have something to do while I rode the train for 4 hours to go visit my children. The first thing that happen was after only using it one time it stopped working. It would constantly stop in the middle of a movie or wouldn't play at all. If it was cold forget trying to use it. I would constantly have to fiddle with it to get it to work. Then after only having it for 4 months I decided to try and use it again and as I opened it up I heard a cracking nose and a screw fell out from the bottom of the screen where it meets the hinges. I wrote to RCA numerous times and was NEVER replied to. I tried to call them and was NEVER successful in finding a human that could help me. I HATE this POS and now it's completely broken! the whole screen broke apart at the hinges. I was never once rough on it and I'm a 35 yr old female adult, not a child being to hard on it. I was always careful with it. I will NEVER buy anything from RCA ever again. Stay away from this company and this player!!!!!

  5. I bought one of these about a year ago, and it is by far the best Portable DVD Player I've ever used or seen. The battery life is above and beyond the projected lifespan, and in a stress test today it lasted over 4 hours on battery power alone. The stability that it offers is impressive, I'm very happy using it on the train where it doesn't bounce around but manages to stay where I put it. The remote functions are quick and easy to use, though you have to be careful because it will give confusing signals to some TVs. Still, the overall quality offered by this product is above and beyond anything I'd expected from it. I look forward to giving RCA the business!
