5 comments about Astar PD3010 Astar Portable DVD Player with 6.5 inch Screen.
  1. I bought this DVD player when I arrived in the USA from the UK for my 3 mth long summer work experience at the start of the summer. And Yes it still works.

I never heard of ASTAR but to be perfectly honest I was not bothered by the make more on the price.

I recently decided to try my region 2 and guess what IT worked yippeee.

Overall The sound is a little weak and even though it has a wide screen 16:9 movies still produce black bars at the top and bottom but apart from that ITS FANSTASTIC for the price its kept me happy on my days off. Pefect for taking to college.

  2. I bought this because there was a considerable discount included, but I really feel like I got more than my money's worth. Works great, right from the start. No problems or hitches at all. The picture is good, the sound is ok too, and I like that I can connect it to a TV to use as my regular DVD player. I haven't had any issues with it and I love that I can take it with me. Oh, and the battery charges very quickly too! It's great!

  3. received without a power supply or car adaptor, therefor the dvd player is completely unusable. no idea if it even works.

  4. I bought this DVD as a gift for someone in Europe.
It worked fine for almost a month now (and it's been used a lot). Plus it played European DVDs.
    Very impressed.

  5. Ok, one star missing. This is a nice little DVD player to relax with. Go kick back on the couch, put the player on your lap and enjoy your favorite DVDs, in your own private theater. But you will need a tiny bit of help. The sound isn't very good, so I suggest buying this player with a set of noise cancelling headphones (Sony MDR-NC6 was a good choice for me, just make sure you have plenty of AAA batteries around!).
I really do like this little DVD unit, the acid test will be when I have to rely on battery power during the frequent electricity outages that are pretty common here. For now, I am very pleased with this product & I use it frequently.

5 comments about Toshiba SD-4960 Universal Disc DVD Player with CD/DVD-Audio/SACD/MP3 Playback.
  1. The Toshiba SD-4960 is a slim design but delivers big on sound.
I threw everything at it I could ... CD-R's, CD-RW's, MP3's, DVD-Audio and SACD's. All performed without a hitch and with great sound.
I had a Toshiba SD-4800 previous to this but it wouldn't play SACD's so I thought I'd make the upgrade.
I prefer DVD-Audio because it gives the visuals of lyrics, photo gallery, etc.. but I am happy with the SACD's I've purchased and have listened to. (sound wise that is).
It is missing the PRO-Logic feature offered on the SD-4800 for playing regular CD's on the system in Dolby PRO-Logic and I miss that feature.
The remote is a little tough to get to know without reading the book thoroughly.
You can't just rely on common sense as you can with most.
Figured it out after the book and seems to be stable but not that intuitive.
The "Bass Management" is nothing more than adjusting your speaker sizes in the audio portion of the menu. They had that on the SD-4800 and never advertised it so I guess it's just a gimmick of sorts.
Overall this unit gets four out of five stars for me.
With the reasonable price and an on board Dolby Digital Decoder it helped me out a lot. (My receiver isn't a Dolby Digital but has the 5:1 analog connectors for surround sound).
    Buy it, you'll like it.

  2. I purchased the 4960 to replace a broken Toshiba SD-4700. What a disappointment! This unit is a huge step back from the 4700.

The PICTURE IS SO BAD, that I could not believe my eyes. I have a 55" HDTV, 3:4, made by Toshiba (don't they test their players on their TVs?) I am using the component inputs in progressive mode. What is so bad with the picture: Everything. First, it is not sharp enough, actually, this is an understatement. Second, the colors are washed away, grayish, dull. Out of the box, it is too bright. I tried all corrections possible on my TV, boosted the contrast (not that I am a big fan of high contrast), lowered the brightness, the picture was still bad. I am not too picky about the video and I am more concerned with the sound quality but this unit makes you want to throw your TV away. Nothing changes if I switch to interlaced mode.

The AUDIO section is excellent. There are some reports that the DACs are Blurr-Brown. I did not open it to verify this but they certainly sound like this. Very smooth, yet detailed, perhaps not as much as other high quality DACs but very listenable. The bass is somewhat soft and some may find the highs a bit muted but I am really being too picky here. It pushes the limits of my system (Marantz SR-7000 receiver, Definitive Technology BP-10 speakers). People with better equipment would not consider this player as a CD player anyway. The DVD-audio is excellent, too but not as satisfying as 2 channel DVD-audio that really shines. It is noticeably better that the DVD-audio on the SD-4700. I cannot say much about the SACD play - I own only one title - The Dark Side of the Moon, and it does not sound as good as I expected. The bass is a bit boomy, the sound is somewhat dark. Well, it is a 30+ years old recording. I read somewhere that the SACD is processed by a different DAC made by Phillips.

A big annoyance is that the LFE levels on DVD-audio and 2 channel stereo/SACD are very different - about 15 dB or more. The player does not have the ability to adjust the LFE or any other channel level. The bass management redirects the bass from the L, R, etc. speakers to the sub, if needed. It seems to work on DD, (on DVD-Audio maybe) but not on 2 channel stereo.

The REMOTE is terrible, the unit responds very slowly to it, sometimes never does, many controls are unintuitive. For example, the play button sometimes has to be pressed once, shortly, as usual but sometimes you need to hold it for a second or so if there is a menu on the screen (pressing it for a short time acts as an OK button). The problem is that when listening to CDs you do not watch the TV screen and never know whether Stop, Pause, Play buttons have to be hold or not. Most of the time, you have to hold them. Very annoying. The telephone rings, you press Pause, nothing happens. Then you remember that you have to press and hold. Meanwhile, the phone stops ringing. Another annoying thing is that the OK button is not in the center of the Up, Down, Left, Right ones.

I decided to keep this player as a universal music player and to look for another one for movies. I had to hook it up through the S-video inputs in order to free the component ones for another player. Then the big surprise came. The picture through the S-video inputs was excellent! If I did not know that it was coming from the S-video input, I would be very happy with my purchase. It was much sharper than before, better colors, better everything. I tried the composite input - still very good picture with visible loss of detail as can be expected.

A nice surprise is the pan-scan feature - it really works. It zooms anamorphic wide-screen movies so that they fit perfectly on a 4:3 screen with loss of some information on the sides, of course. The pan-scan on the 4700 never made any difference.

It does not play my DVD+R's. Actually, it does but the motion is very jittery. Toshiba said that they do not support DVD+R because they are in the DVD-R camp. Makes you feel happy.

I managed to fix the old SD-4700 and hooked it up again. The difference is striking - the SD-4700 has a way better picture than the 4960. They both use Zoran chips of different generations, I guess, so I cannot understand what went wrong with the 4960. I also tried Harman Kardon DVD-22 (excellent video but it has other problems) . The 4700 comes close after it, while the 4960 does not compare to those two at all, it is just terrible.

1 star for video, 5 for audio. Since this is a DVD player after all, my overall rating is 2 stars. One more than it really deserves because people with non HD TVs might be actually satisfied. It is a good value however, for the sound.

    Update:

After 6-7 months, the player refused to play DVD-Audio. Toshiba replaced it with a new unit. Meanwhile, I discovered that the bass management is completely messed up. In SACD mode, it would not output any bass to the sub, if some speakers are set to large, others to small. If all are set to small, the bass is too strong and boomy. If all are set to large, the bass form the .1 channel is about 20 dB or so weaker than normal. This makes me believe that in "small" mode, the .1 channel is practically lost because the bass from the other channels dominates it.

  3. In his review, Peter gave the Toshiba low marks for picture quality in component mode. At first, I was also disappointed, but I think that perhaps Peter didn't have the unit set up correctly. My old Panasonic DVD player would output component and S-video simultaneously, but this unit won't. If it's set to S-video, there is a component signal, but it's terrible. You have to go in the setup menu and select component out, either interlaced or progressive. Once you choose, you'll get a good component signal but no S-video. I was still not happy with the quality of the image, so I experimented. The black level was set to "on". I set it to "off" and finally got a great picture, better than the Panasonic it replaced.

I still have a couple of quibbles, though. I tested a DVD-audio (Hotel California). Interestingly, the menu choices are different when played in this unit. In the Panasonic, my choices were for DTS or Dolby digital surround. In the Toshiba, it's "surrond sound" or "stereo sound". The Panasonic was hooked up to my receiver by optical digital cable. It would play either format fine. The Toshiba should play both, but I don't know which it is choosing. I selected DTS on the menu, so I guess that's what it is. The signal will not play through the optical output, I have to use the 7.1 analog out. The sound quality is fine, but different from my receiver's DAC's (tested playing stereo CD). I'm waiting for some SACD's, so I'll reserve total judgement.

I also bought the unit to play back video CD's recorded in SVCD format. The Panasonic only played VCD. I use ProShow Gold and a disk that plays fine in other players has audio dropouts when played on the Toshiba. I've got some more experimenting to do to get around this problem. I hope it's not a back breaker.

    In Summary:

Pros - Very versatile (DVD,SACD, DVD-Audio, Photo CD, JPEG, etc.
    - Slim design
    - Excellent picture quality
    - Great price, nothing comes close for a SACD/DVD-Audio combo.

Cons - Either/or S-video/component output, not both at the same time
    - Poorly written manual
    - Confusing remote and menus
    - Skipping audio on Photo CD (not fully analyzed).

    I'd buy it again.
    Doug

  4. Toshiba makes outstanding DVD players and this model is no exception. As is the case with most good DVD players these days, this Toshiba has progressive scan which gives enhanced picture quality when playing DVDs with a high-definition TV. You may not have HD TV yet but you probably will have one within a year or two, at which time you'll want a top notch DVD player with progressive scan capability, such as this Toshiba.

For people who like great sound as well as great pictures, something very important sets this model apart from other good progressive scan DVD players: it plays both the new DVD Audio CDs and the even better sounding Super Audio CDs. Most modern DVD players play regular CDs as well as DVDs, but very few have the capability to also play both DVD Audio and Super Audio CDs which are the highest fidelity audio media currently available. And SACD circuitry can actually improves the sound of regular CDs as well. So if you want both the best picture and the best sound, a progressive scan player with DVD-A and SACD capability is the one to get. This Toshiba has both of these features at a very reasonable price.

  5. Im a big fan of Panasonic DVD players and never really carred for much else untill i found this player really cheap somewhere so i thought i buy it for a backup to my panasonic, some things i learnrd about this player first the sound is terriffic as good as my $250.00 panasonic the picture also, its a nice looking player to slim and silver.A couple of bad things and the reason its still just a backup to my panasonic, first the remote is plan terrible what were they thinking its like the remotes we got when dvd player first showed up big and awkward cant find buttons in dark with all the practice possible and no option you cant even flip the time to see how much time remains on a dvd or cd.If you dont need all the bells and whistles and are just looking for good picture with great sound this is a teriffic choice,if your more technical and prefer more bells and whistles(color control, bit display, one touch cinema video, dialouge enhancer, digital noise reducer etc.) buy a panasonic s77s model or 47s.I recommend this highly even with the cons i have decribed above, picture and sound are just to good.

  1. This is a nice dvd player as far as the picture and sound goes. It will play store bought dvds fine but anything that was burned on a dvd recorder whether it was a dvd-r or dvd+r, it would freeze and skip and sometimes get confused. This upset me as the box says it will play DVD-r/rw and DVD+r/rw but I never had any luck.
I returned this after a week of checking out what dvds would play on it and bought a Panasonic 7 inch DVD-LS50 model that will play anything that I have burned on a dvd recorder as that is what I want to watch on it as well as the store bought dvds.

  2. I got this about 8 months ago and I love it. It has super picture quality and the sound is good too. When listening with headphones Im able to adjust the sound, but I wish it would go just a little bit higher. All the DVDs Ive played have played flawlessly. A nice size, too. It is a great unit for the price we paid and Im very happy with it.

  3. Poor replay---skips---freezes and emmits noises from inside as if confused. If I could reach the seller, I`d ask for an upgrade since I want to be able to play all types of discs as described on the box. I have a large number of archived DVD's on DVD+/-R and RW discs which this thing just freezes up on. One of the other reviewers has given me a source for a substitute....chuckonechuck@bellsouth.net

  4. My husband bought me this player so I could have something to do while I rode the train for 4 hours to go visit my children. The first thing that happen was after only using it one time it stopped working. It would constantly stop in the middle of a movie or wouldn't play at all. If it was cold forget trying to use it. I would constantly have to fiddle with it to get it to work. Then after only having it for 4 months I decided to try and use it again and as I opened it up I heard a cracking nose and a screw fell out from the bottom of the screen where it meets the hinges. I wrote to RCA numerous times and was NEVER replied to. I tried to call them and was NEVER successful in finding a human that could help me. I HATE this POS and now it's completely broken! the whole screen broke apart at the hinges. I was never once rough on it and I'm a 35 yr old female adult, not a child being to hard on it. I was always careful with it. I will NEVER buy anything from RCA ever again. Stay away from this company and this player!!!!!

  5. I bought one of these about a year ago, and it is by far the best Portable DVD Player I've ever used or seen. The battery life is above and beyond the projected lifespan, and in a stress test today it lasted over 4 hours on battery power alone. The stability that it offers is impressive, I'm very happy using it on the train where it doesn't bounce around but manages to stay where I put it. The remote functions are quick and easy to use, though you have to be careful because it will give confusing signals to some TVs. Still, the overall quality offered by this product is above and beyond anything I'd expected from it. I look forward to giving RCA the business!

  1. This system is the most unfriendly system that I ever operated. The unit has no controls except eject, play and stop. The track button and skip feature are on the remote only. The remote has a 1 second delay when a button is pressed causing you to take 5 minutes to get to a track and repeatedly miss the track that you want. On the remote, the skip and advance buttons are the same and we had a very difficult time with advancing to the next track since the unit wanted to keep skipping through the songs instead. We also had a problem with the unit skipping involuntarily through the CD's we were using but when we played the CD's on another unit, they worked fine. Very Very disappointed in this item !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1 Star !!

  2. Despite the bad reviews, I figured that it would at least function so I ordered it only because I could not get anything else before my party. That was a mistake. It couldn't even read most of the CDs and DVD's I tried.

  3. Purchased this a few months back (for apx. $50) with the sole purpose of playing DVDs purchased from Greece. First machine had to be returned because it wouldn't read the discs. Amazon quickly shipped out a second machine. It worked, was able to view the movies -- but, only for a short time. Machine froze, one of my discs is still being held hostage inside this garbage machine.

In the meantime, my father also bought one of these players -- same deal, it broke. Don't even waste your time.

  4. I ordered the Coby DVD player just to be able to sing karaoke with the kids. It's a great DVD player and the Karaoke sounds like a professional system. The microphone handles sound very well. I was very pleased with this item and would recommend it to anyone looking to sing Karaoke and not wanting to get a big system.

  5. Oddly enough, I did not purchase this item from Amazon. I selected it as a free gift for a 15-year service award at work. It's not even worth the time it took to ship. I could tell as soon as I pulled it from the box that it was poorly made but the first thing that went wrong is the power button broke so I had to rely soley on the remote to turn it on. Then, the disk tray malfunctioned and refused to stay open long enough for me to even insert a disk. I noticed Amazon has it listed as "not currently available". Smart move on their part. Good riddance!

  1. Hello seller, i have much intrest in buying this your item so i will want you to get back to it if it is still available for sale..

  2. Granted, this product records well, but everything seems to take forever. I stand around waiting for startup, I stand around even longer for Open/Close (that's what really gets to me). And now, after 8 months, every other disc I play makes a tremendous noise, as though it is off balance.

    Don't do it! Shop around.

  3. There are so many things wrong with this deck, but these are the three things that are most infuriating to me:

    1. If you burn a DVD on an Apple computer using iMovie, and you try to play it on this machine, it won't work.

    2. When you press the eject button, it takes literally about 5 seconds for the tray to come out. I've owned cheapo, $50 DVD players that operated more smoothly. Everything on this one seems to take longer, as if the machine is thinking about things before it decides to do what you want it to do.

    3. If you want to use the DV-to-DVD feature -- that is, burning a DVD from a DV camera hooked up by Firewire -- be prepared to have LOTS of failed discs. I've spent several afternoons just trying to get one smooth burn of a DV tape.

I've had pretty good luck recording stuff directly from cable TV, but that's the only reliable feature. And if you think about it, that's the bare minimum that this machine is supposed to do.

You'd think that Philips, with its solid history of DVD technology, would make a better machine.

I bought this model brand new at a Target store. Shame on Target for even stocking it.

The way I figure it, Philips probably owes me about 50 blank DVDs. What a ripoff.

  4. I bought this as a replacement for an old DVD player, thinking the record feature might come in handy. It plays DVD's just fine, I agree it is a bit slow as others have mentioned for the loading and such, but not a big deal. Eventually I started using the record feature to record off old tapes and off tv, that's when I discovered all the problems.

1 - the machine would get very hot, I was afraid to use it for too long. I looked around the box, there is no evidence that this "burner" has a fan in it. I have set up an oscillating fan up that blows over my machine to keep it cool now.
2 - The DVDR freezes up sometimes, to the point I have to pull the plug and start over.
3 - Setting the timer record for the tv only works sometimes, leaving me very frustrated when I miss my favorite shows when they are on too late for me. In the times that it did work, there were skips and flutters in the recording when I played it back.
4 - I tried the One Touch Record feature, the red light came on indicating it was recording, but when I woke up and checked the disc, it was blank. Other times it would just stop in the middle of a recording.
5 - Finally I tried recording manually, which usually works, hitting pause myself on the commercials, and when I finished, the disc was blank again.
6 - When using the edit mode,to cut commercials, add chapter markers etc., you have to exit edit mode each time you make a change and it takes 2-5 minutes to return to the menu screen. You can't just turn off the edit menu and keep going.

This DVDR works fine some of the time, but I need a product that works right all the time. So I am very unhappy with this product as a recording device. I thought highly of Philips, but this product definitely did not live up to that expectation.
