  1. This thing started out fine for about 6 months, but now operation is very erratic, it can't read certain discs. Some of these are prerecorded discs, and some are discs that used to play in this player a few months ago! The error I get is "DISC ERROR" or "NO DISC".

  2. I've had mine for a couple years now & I'm still very pleased with it! I've backed up alot of VHS tapes with this onto DVD, & it has very good video noise reduction!

  1. Ever since I discovered this player in the summer of 2005, I have been highly impressed with how much it met both my normal and oddball demands. As a student of Musical Theatre, Opera, Classical vocal and choral literature, and Jazz and Classical piano, DVD-AUDIO and SACD capabilities are of great importance to me because there are a lot of titles especially in the Classical genre available in these formats. One thing that sets this player apart from the other manufacturers' players is Yamaha's CD UpSampling feature. For those titles which are currently only available on CD and possibly will never be released on DVD-AUDIO and/or SACD, this option converts standard CDs to the quality of DVD-AUDIO. On the Musical Theatre, Opera, and choral side of things, this player is capable of playing both NTSC (North American) and PAL (European) DVDs on corresponding as well as opposite TVs. For certain titles in these genres, the North American editions are either four percent slower in tempo and picture movement and flatter in pitch than the European editions due to the method of PAL-to-NTSC conversion used by the distributors of such DVDs, or do not include as many bonus features as their original European counterparts. Sometimes, it can be the other way around, except the European editions might be four percent faster and sharper and have less bonus material than their original North American counterparts. On both ends of the spectrum, if the audio pitch is corrected without changing the audio speed to keep the picture and sound in synch, a subaudible breaking-up effect may be noticed as the result of slight artifacts from slightly bending or stretching the pitch in the conversion process. However, because of this player's bicompatibility with both color systems, I have the freedom to choose and purchase whatever editions are the best. Although it is not in the manual, this player can be made multi-region compatible including RCE DVDs. Turn on the DVD player. Make sure there are no discs loaded. With the tray open, using its supplied remote control, slowly press 99990. Wait for the 'Region 0' message to disappear. Close the tray. Now you can play any kind of optical disc without thinking about it. In conclusion, if you are looking for a DVD player with one hundred percent compatibility all across the board, you have come to the right place!* *Others have reported problems playing 'Dual Discs'--a type of disc which includes DVD-VIDEO on one side or layer, and CD DIGITAL AUDIO on another, also known as 'Hybrids.' However, big names, such as Panasonic, Sony, and Pioneer, do not recommend using these discs in their players. This is not to be confused with 'Hybrid' type SACDs, which many, including the Yamaha DVS5860 will support.

  2. This product does what it advertises and not really much else. It has progressive scan playback with component out and digital audio out. Playback quality is passable though it does not contain the technologies in higher-end dvd players to prevent pausing during layer-changes and buffer through skips and dirty disc sections. But then again, it's a $40 dvd player. The remote is, well, a remote you'd expect with a dvd player of this price.

This player will not take abuse or excessively heavy use. But if you break it, take consolation in the fact that you can buy 9 more before you have paid up the same for a quality Sony/Onkyo/Denon/etc. player.

  3. I was able to use this product twice before it ceased functioning. I watched one DVD over 2 sessions and when I attempted to watch another one a few weeks later, it wouldn't even power on. Truly you get what you pay for.

  4. I bought an $80 Sanyo DVD Player from Best Buy that lasted a month before failing. Best Buy wouldn't refund or replace the broken DVD player, so I went online and bought this one for $35. I have been using it for about 5 months now (about 4 times a week) and I have had no problems with it. My 3-year old also figured out how to use it in under 5 minutes. I see that some people had problems with theirs but if it broke tomorrow I would still say that I got my money out of it.

  5. I had this product for several months, but only used it a total of maybe ten times before it stopped working completely. Even in earlier uses it didn't work as advertised, because it wouldn't play my DVD+Rs correctly. Also this player has the worst remote control I've ever used. The buttons are completely flat and extremely hard to push. I had a similarly priced unit from Magnavox that lasted for years, so I don't buy the whole 'you get what you pay for' argument. This product is just poorly made. I won't be buying any more Coby DVD players.

  1. The battery does not work in the hanging position, so you don't have the option to have battery power in the car, so every time you stop for gas or turn off the car for a second, you have to restart the DVD and find where you left off. Very annoying. Also, the way that the cords attach makes too many cords hanging around the car, compared with other sets where the two monitors attach with one USB cord for power and video. The hanging bag for the main player doesn't work for our compact car, it will only hang in such a way that the buttons are right at our two-year-old's feet, and it can't be adjusted any higher, so this machine is not working out for us.

  2. The whole process was fine then when I opened up and turned on the unit for the first time I saw a dead pixel. Rather than return the item I guess I will just have to live with it. My Guess is it was never tested.

  3. I bought this thinking it was one of the "better" DVD players out there, but I was dead wrong. It worked fine until now 9 months later, the screen won't show anything but the sound works fine. And surprise, surprise the manufacturer warranty is only 90 days. That's absurd! No more audiovox for me!

  4. I got this and it surprised me at how well it worked... I attached it to the head rests with the straps it came with and I was set.. at night it looked like built in DVD players in the head rests from outside..

but 10 or 11 months later.... and it just stopped working!!! The sound works but no picture on either LCD... : (

I was gonna buy another as I thought my kids broke it, but after reading the reviews... it's obviously a manufacturers defect.. too bad...

at under $150, debating on getting another, cause when it did work, it did everything it needed to do.

  5. Have used the dvd player for three trips so far and love it! Seems to be fairly sturdy compared to many others in the past. Love the carrying case. Only drawback I see is we can't use both sreens while using the battery pack(needed for use on a plane). The additional screen is light and very nice. Like the total of three headphone jacks for both screens. Very quiet and simple to use. Never have had a problem. So far its the best portable unit I have owned and have had several over the past 6 years.

  1. I bought this dvd player for my husband. It didn't seem to work at first the screen was always black. After that problem got fixed it froze in the middle of moovies. On rare occasions it works through out a moovie but most of the time freezes or the screen goes black. I would not recommend this to anyone.

  2. I don't know what happened with some of the other reviewers, but my Mintek MDP-1810 has worked great for well over a year and through 2 young children. We have taken it overseas, on flights, used at home during power outages and it is still going strong. Great picture quality and a tough little machine.

  3. If anyone provided a review for this item right after playing it the first time, they would have written a glowing review. So would I. But I have only used it ONE time for a plane trip. When I just took it out of the case for the second time, the thing will not play. When you insert a disc, it just makes this awful noise and then says "no disc found". Regardless of what dvd is inserted, the machine does not work. It was used not more than 6 hours tops. What a piece of trash it is.

  4. I purchased this in August 2004 for my daughter during long plane/car trips. It worked well and went through a lot of use until it recently gave out (Jan 2006). Although I don't consider that necessarily good quality, if you get a good deal and buy it from a store (such as CostCo) which has a liberal return policy you can probably end up with a decent player that will last you 1-3 years or so, even if you have to return one if it fails during the initial burn-in period.

  5. Had I read the reviews here initially, I would have looked for another brand. I bought my first 1810 unit at Cosco and within three months, my case started breaking and Cosco readily replaced the unit. I had the other unit for a little over a year and it's no longer workimg. On both units, I would sometimes have difficulties as other reviewers have reported and I would keep trying and it would generally start to work. I thought at first the DVD discs were defective and replaced one. Then I thought it was a dirty disc and would insure the disc was clean. Then I thought it was the unit needed to be perfectly level and then I thought it was that my laser needed cleaning, so, I bought a cleaner and used it. The really frustrating aspect of the whole problem was that each solution seemed to work for a while. Even though I had to start a DVD allover again to get back to where I was when a freez-up began, or if it took 20 minutes for the unit to work, I persevered. When it finally malfunctioned enough to totally exasperate me, I emailed the Mintec company for technical suggestions and never heard from them. So, it is a hit or miss proposition as to whether you will get a dependable unit and the functional ife of the unit is highly varable and the technical support is not supportive. In short, even though some reviewers are sastisfied, for the same money, you can do better.

  1. I bought this DVD player a few years ago. It usually works, but can be finicky about whether it will work or not. Occasionally, it gave a NODISK error, but I think this was due to heating or the player not being level, because I moved it, and it seems to work all the time now.

The menu is a bit cludgy compared to "modern" DVD players, and switching to using captions still bewilders me from time to time.

Overall, when it works, its a nice DVD player, ... (better than videotape, at least). It works with DVDR, which is pleasing!

  2. This dvd player was more affordable than most at the time, so we bought it. It has been reliable and served us well. Now, 2 years into it, we are having serious skipping problems and freezing problems. It has always run a bit of a temperature, as discs are very warm to the touch when removing them from the unit. CD's only work if they are factory burned (not CD-R), and come out of the unit rather warm as well. Good entry level unit, recommend getting a killer warranty plan along with it and also getting for a great markdown price!!

  3. I purchased this product last year for my husbands birthday and we have had nothing but trouble ever since. When we first set it up we used it a couple of times and it stopped working. My husband had to send it back to RCA to get it replaced at least twice before he complained that he didn't think it was packaged properly. It finally came packaged properly and worked, for about 6 months. 2 weeks ago it completely stopped in the middle of a movie and hasn't worked since. You've got to be kidding me.
This is the biggest waste of money and time ever!! It's a total disgrace.

  4. I got this player because I have an RCA TV that only has a coaxial cable input and a stereo that would only handle virtual surround. Since I'd only had the TV for a year, I wasn't going to buy a new one to accomodate a DVD player, so I settled for a basic unit (the RC5220P) with a converter for "digital" movie enjoyment. The 4:3 display has never been good. Image quality has been tolerable. After a brief 2 years of service, the video card just quit and service will cost at least half as much as a new player. Hmmm...wonder if I should get a new RCA player?

  5. I bought a RCA 5220P DVD player last year. It has been working great since bought. Every one in my family loves it. When my relatives and my friends came to my house and they watched and listened DVDs and CDs with my DVD player, they said that it worked perfectly, and many of them also bought this model.

  1. I purchased this DVD/VCR combo just two weeks ago and already the VCR section of the player does not work. Electronics are just not what they used to be. Returned the item and would not recommend to anyone.

  2. I haven't yet had a problem with the DVD player on this unit. The VCR seems to work OK too, and I figured out how to program timer recording easily. A cool feature is that it reads your tape and tells you how much time you have left on it to record when you aren't sure if you have room for a program. The only real drawback I had was the hookup instructions. They were needlessly complicated and could have been written a lot simpler than they were. Once I figured out what I needed to do, hookup was a breeze. But the reading the directions made it harder, not easier.

  3. I have owned this unit for about 15 months now. I bought it as a bedroom unit. I wanted a good DVD player and a VHS to transfer TiVo content onto tape. I was especially interested in getting a high-quality DVD as I have a high-end Panasonic 20" LCD TV in the bedroom. I am very happy with the picture quality of the DVD player to say the least. I watch 4-5 movies per week due to a large DVD collection and NetFlix. In fact, I do the majority of my DVD viewing in the bedroon, not my main LR HT setup. I watched "The Incredibles" on this player a few nights ago and it looked stunning. I appreciate the front AV connections to connect my TiVO to the unit to transfer recordings onto tape. I have had no mechanical problems with this player in all the time I've owned it. The remote is good, there is a good setup\adjustment menu. It gives me everything I want and I get it for a very inexpensive price!

    -Mike

  4. I bought THREE of these things over the last two years ... at least two of them from Amazon. (The actual model number was different -- XVC20U in black -- but it's basically the same combo deck they've been selling for several years now. Now they've added progressive scan and DVD burner, other than that it looks like the exact same thing that I bought.)

They worked fine at first, but after a while, DVDs started freezing up on them. Oddly, I have absolutely NO trouble playing music CDs in the very same drives.

DVD freezing has has happened on all of them, but it is worse on the unit I have used most. It seems to do it less when the machine or the DVD has cooled down. It gets worse over time. Lens cleaning with a disc-brusher, lens cleaning via taking off the case for direct contact cleaning, and air-pressured dusting -- all do no good.

Anyway, thanks to JVC I have several hundred dollars worth of DVD players that don't play DVDs ... other reviews (under various model numbers) suggest there's not a chance JVC will make good on them.

I have had, in the past, good luck with JVC TVs and car stereo units, and I try to stay loyal to brands, suppliers and what not. But I seriously doubt I will be making any other JVC purchases due to these things. I suppose JVC doesn't place much value on their brand or image or they wouldn't have dumped this stuff into the marketplace.

It seems to be getting harder and harder to find companies that bother to make products that are actually worth what you pay for them. I suppose companies that rip-off customers and laugh their way to the bank must be part of the "new economy" I keep hearing about.

  5. I have owned this unit for over 4 years now and I can say that it has not failed me yet. In fact I am buying another one for my Girlfriend to replace her Sanyo Combo unit. It has great features and wonderful video and audio quality. I highly recommend this unit.

  1. I purchased this item from Amazon.com because it's very difficult to find Pioneer products in my area. I must say I am very pleased with Amazon and the shipping method. AS far as the product, not Pioneers best. Very slow to load disc. Makes alot of noise, doesn't sound smooth , mechanisms sound cheap. Does not have optical output. But overall, it works so far.....

  2. The Pioneer DVR arrived in good used condition and everything works. The manual was included. I have used it to record from the TV and it works very well for that function. I wanted a recorder that would copy a DVD which I had produced. I cannot figure how to do that. I don't think it is possible on this DVD recorder.
