5 comments about Sony DVP-S550D DVD Player.
  1. "Me too" review ahead. I was amazed (and relieved, in a way) at how many others here have seen the same thing I am now experiencing with this DVD player. As another person wrote, the player worked well when it worked. I've owned my DVP-S550D for over 6 years, and "fortunately", the frequent C13:00 errors didn't crop up until a year ago or so. Since then, the problem worsened: the player stopped playing DVDs it used to, no matter how clean they were. And currently, it just responds with "NO DISC" for any DVD/CD I put in. I have not contacted Sony yet; was considering trying to get it fixed, but after reading other posts here, seems better to trash it and just get a new one.

  2. I guess I've been really lucky. After 4-5 years (?), my player's just starting to give c:13 errors - on about 20 percent of my Netflix rentals. One hint for people having problems: my player's become very sensitive to heat and shuts down frequently unless I give it very good ventilation. So try fanning your DVD player if you can't get through an entire movie. (Talk about being a slave to technology!)

  3. Sorry I know a lot of people have had issues with this player, but it is THE ONLY Sony product I would ever buy again. Back in the day (7yrs) ago I think I paid $400-500 for this thing, but the features are awesome. It has a built in line level surround processor. I have not seen one since in a DVD player. What this means to me is that I don't have to use a CHEAP sounding AV reciever with this unit. When I was at the peak I was running 3 all tube amps for the most pure sound out there. One for the center, one for the front, and one for the rear. I think the only thing you can find now is coaxial, or S/PDIF. This forces you to use a lame AV transistor sub-sound processor. This thing also came with nice remote with tons more features than today's DVD remotes. In conclusion; I feel for the people who had problems, but I love mine, and wish I had another.

  4. I am now getting the infamous c13:00 error that everyone is talking about. I WAS a hard core Sony fan, but I know now that I am not going to purchase another Sony product. The classaction if it goes through will give you a cheap rebuilt $60 sony player without any of the functions I now have or did have or a 40 credit. If you go on the Sony repair site they admit that they will not repair your unit, but will "SELL" you a rebuilt unit for $300. BEWARE of this product.

  5. I got ths DVD player back "remember when" It still plays today. Sure on the fast movies with a lot of action and quick edit cuts the "lyp sinc' problem occurs. All I do is stop the player for about ten seconds, stop it, not puase it. Hit play and viloa, the lips match. Usually I have to do this just once per action packed movie, sometimes twice. As for the ::c1300:: I only get that from porn videos and really smudged, finger printed, scrtached movies from Netflix or the local video store. This is my 3rd DVD player and the best I've had for what now, 8 years?

  1. Do not buy this product. It is cheaply made and will not last very long. Mine lasted for 5 months, which is longer than most machines from what I gather reading online reviews on other sites. The warranty is a joke...you have to pay another $100 to get a replacement and it's still the same piece of junk. Spend a little more the first time around and make sure there is a full year of warranty on parts and labor, or buy the replacement insurance from the store.

  2. PROS:

    1. It comes with headphones and the picture quality isn't too bad.

    CONS:

    1. Does not come with a bag to store all the cords and monitors in.

    2. The straps on the monitors which hold it onto the seat/headrest were too small to go around the bucket seats. We discovered this about two hours before we were scheduled to hit the road. If your seats do not have adjustable headrests ,or in the case of bucket seats, do not get narrower at the top, the straps will not fit. I had to take the velcro straps off the old set we couldn't use any more (screen died) and use those. Additionally, the straps that come with this monitor set buckle, which in my opinion, isn't as good as a velcro strap which lays flatter.

    3. Every time you want to change the movie, you will need to pull the DVD player out of the holder on the back of the seat (doing so gently so that all the cords attached don't become entangled and don't fall out). Sorry, but this is one majorly huge PITA when you're hurtling down the highway. And I'm talking about the front seat passenger having to deal with movie changes, not the driver (forget it if you're traveling alone with your kids. You'll have to do movie changes at a rest stop or have kids old enough to do it themselves....provided they can reach the unit on the back of the seat from their buckled-in position.)

    4. The power button on the front was often bumped into whenever my child would move her knee, foot, leg, etc. Can you picture it now? NO MOVING FOR THE NEXT 10 HOURS LEST YOU TURN THE MOVIE OFF! The power button was bumped into about a half dozen times on our trip. For the record, we were traveling in a roomy 8 passenger Ford E-series van.

    5. We went from a 3-piece mobile DVD player to this one. Two pieces seemed like a great idea. Our last mobile DVD player the cords ran straight down the back of the seat and under the front seat and were out of sight, were not stepped on, pulled out, etc. They didn't get in the way. NOT THE CASE with the Dual DVD player - the cords run in between the units, which was a pain every time the kids had to get out of the car - they were trying to get around all the cords running along the back seat and inbetween the units.

    6. I didn't have the instruction manual with us, so who knows what I was doing wrong. One would think pressing the Power, Play, and Stop buttons on the unit would be somewhat intuitive - you know, they'd actually work? Good thing I thought to grab the remote control before we headed out the door on our trip, otherwise I'm not sure if the kids would've been able to view any movies! The Play button never worked - I always had to use the remote control. So I ask, what's the point of the buttons on the unit (other than the power button which seemed to work just fine for turning the unit OFF [but not On, lol])?

    7. I thought it was great that this set came with headphones. Unfortunately the headphones were very cheap - in their smallest setting, they were too big to fit on the heads of my 4 and 6.5 year olds. Wish I had a picture of my kids in the backseat - they looked like the "Hear No Evil" monkeys holding their head phones up. The headphones rarely stayed in the smallest settings either - not stiff so they would constantly open up to a larger setting. I'm not sure who the manufacturers think are buying this product, but let me tell them: It's families with kids! And generally speaking, kids have smaller heads than adults, so why were adult sized headphone included in this set?

I hope the above convinces you to keep on looking. I curse the designer of this unit to a loooong road trip with young kids using this unit.

  3. If the other reviews on this page haven't scared you away already, read mine. This machine is really really irritating.

1-No Case for all the wires and so on : MOMMY whining
2-The above mentioned wires are very fragile and so when my son tripped over the connecting cord trying to exit the van, the DVD became unable to communicate with the secondary screen and I had to replace the entire cord system for $30plus shipping: DADDY whining
3-The screens DO NOT FIT in the "hammocks" included. It's as if they were made for a different DVD player. The elastic at the bottom causes the screen to sag down into the leather so my kids couldn't see the bottom third of the screen. The hammock also would gap along the bottom edge which caused shadowing. You can't adjust the angle of the screen so viewing angle relies on the weight of the machine and the angle of the headrest it's attached to. If the car swerves or goes around a curve, the screen will move and your children will whine. KIDS whining, MOMMY whining, DADDY cursing
4-The nature of the suspension system makes it very tricky, time consuming, and labor intensive to change DVD as the above reviews have stated. EVERYONE whining
5-The cords don't lock in place, so when my 9 year old decided he could see better if he held the screen in his hands (he could) while the 5yr old and 4yr old used the hanging secondary screen, the connecting cord might just FALL OUT causing the secondary screen to go blue. THIS CAUSED BRUTAL WHINING
6-The headphones were the same as the free ones from Jet Blue. They lasted about 2 trips before they fell apart. No one whined because the couldn't possibly fit a child's head anyway, even on the smallest setting.

Please, I don't know you, but PLEASE don't waste money on this product. It's an evil machine. Today, just about a year after purchase, (and no, I haven't even used it in the van with the brand new cord system I bought to repair the tripped over cord) the macine was playing a DVD and suddenly stopped. The screen said, "NO DVD" even though only moments prior there was,and in fact, there still is a DVD inside the machine. I called the repair number on the back of the machine immediately. The guy I spoke to wasted no time at all telling me that this is likely a fatal problem. (wimper)

Keep looking. This is not your machine. I wish it wasn't mine.

  4. We had ours for about 6 months and one of the screen quit playing; once we finally got ahold of customer service they don't us not to waste our money to fix it, it wasn't covered under warranty and it would be best just to buy a new one. Run quickly to a more reputable brand!!

  5. This deserves negative stars. Do not purchase. We purchased ours at Target last year and after about only 10 uses, the unit no longer reads the DVD. I called customer service to ask for help and they stated that it would probably be cheaper to buy a new one vs. having the laser fixed as that is what the issue most likely is. We received this as a gift from my parents and I feel bad that they wasted their money on this.

It is difficult to slide in and out of the case and the case lost its shape and started to sag. We did not even get a chance to use the second monitor as it stopped working so quickly on us.

  1. The battery does not work in the hanging position, so you don't have the option to have battery power in the car, so every time you stop for gas or turn off the car for a second, you have to restart the DVD and find where you left off. Very annoying. Also, the way that the cords attach makes too many cords hanging around the car, compared with other sets where the two monitors attach with one USB cord for power and video. The hanging bag for the main player doesn't work for our compact car, it will only hang in such a way that the buttons are right at our two-year-old's feet, and it can't be adjusted any higher, so this machine is not working out for us.

  2. The whole process was fine then when I opened up and turned on the unit for the first time I saw a dead pixel. Rather than return the item I guess I will just have to live with it. My Guess is it was never tested.

  3. I bought this thinking it was one of the "better" DVD players out there, but I was dead wrong. It worked fine until now 9 months later, the screen won't show anything but the sound works fine. And surprise, surprise the manufacturer warranty is only 90 days. That's absurd! No more audiovox for me!

  4. I got this and it surprised me at how well it worked... I attached it to the head rests with the straps it came with and I was set.. at night it looked like built in DVD players in the head rests from outside..

but 10 or 11 months later.... and it just stopped working!!! The sound works but no picture on either LCD... : (

I was gonna buy another as I thought my kids broke it, but after reading the reviews... it's obviously a manufacturers defect.. too bad...

at under $150, debating on getting another, cause when it did work, it did everything it needed to do.

  5. Have used the dvd player for three trips so far and love it! Seems to be fairly sturdy compared to many others in the past. Love the carrying case. Only drawback I see is we can't use both sreens while using the battery pack(needed for use on a plane). The additional screen is light and very nice. Like the total of three headphone jacks for both screens. Very quiet and simple to use. Never have had a problem. So far its the best portable unit I have owned and have had several over the past 6 years.

  1. This is the worst DVD player ever! I bought two of these and one broke on the first day and the other broke on the second day. Both of them ate the disks and I had to pry the DVD player apart jsut to get it open. This DVD player is just a piece of crap.

  2. The DVD player has a classy look. Works great with all electronics, even digital TVs. It is SO easy to use, I've never even had to open the user's manual.

  3. Whilst this may not be the most technologically advanced or sleakest looking machine on the market, I challenge you to find a more user-friendly DVD player which can be manipulated without opening the machine or doing anything illegally into playing any DVD not just from any region but also PAL or NTSC thanks to it's changable format. My player doesn't even require changing every time a new region or format DVD is put in - it automatically reads the DVD and changes itself to be able to play it. For less then forty dollars, you really couldn't ask more. It's a small design but the remote is fully functional and of good size - certainly no tiny little buttons to fiddle around with. I am absolutely delighted with the player for its usability and cost.

  4. I bought this DVD player for use with a 1997 model Zenith 25' TV. It's my first DVD player, so I can't compare it with others, but it seems fine. I don't think it has a significant problem with lines as they say non-progressive scan machines do. There are lots of ways to adjust it if you study the manual. However, the color on my TV suddenly went partially out one day after using it only a few times.

  5. I've taken three of them all of them are working with no complaints. Have so many features like MP3, vcd, svcd, dvd, recordable dvd, photo disc play.
