5 comments about Samsung DVD-P421 Progressive-Scan DVD Player.
- At first glance, this DVD Player was a plus. It even had Duel Laser pickup, which virtually eliminates that stupid pause between layers on Duel Layer DVDs.
However, I found the picture and playability of the disc to be unsatisfactory. I hooked it up using the component video outputs, and I would occasionally get a highly noticable blue line at the top of the screen, and an occassional red wiggly afterglow on some text that appeared during certain films. And the picture would be a little jumpy - occasionally. Also, sometimes the player wouldn't play a disc. I'd have to take the disc out of the player, and put it back in for it to play. It was a perfectly fine disc that played on my previous DVD player. Overall, this player had potential, but failed.
- infrequently stops with dirty rental dvd, flawless operation with personal dvd's, most rentals for nearly a year. My first dvd, so I have nothing to compare it with, but at discount price, I have no complaints. Every brand has lemons, low raters must of gotten one.
- I have had my dvd player coming up 2 years now and I can successfuly say I must have gotten one of the non factory rejects. Mine has never given me trouble. Not once. It has played photo dvd's and audio, plus my dvd's perfect. There is no weird red line or blue bar like some have reviewed to say. The remotes dont annoy me either. I find the remote quite cool to be honest. I meen I am only 17 years old for crying out loud. I dont need a big fancy thing to make me happy. Samsung has satisfied my family in the past and my dvd player is great. I got it for christmas. I can say that compared to some of my friends, this one is the best one. My one friend has a panasonic brand, and it sucks. I can say that I am lucky to have this one. It loads my dvd's in less then 10 seconds literally. Its a perfect model for myself. I think some people who are un happy with it must have gotten bad models. Mine is perfect.
- Have had the Samsung P421 for about a year an a half. 10 months into ownership it began pausing occasionally and randomly in the middle of a DVD, then either skipping or stopping entirely with the "Disc will not play message." Initially I attributed this to to a disc that was dirty or damaged, but when cleaning a disc didn't help and it did it as well with clean DVDs that played satisfactorily on other players, I realized the player was at fault. As time has gone on it's gotten worse, and now it displays this problem on at least 70% of the DVDs played and refuses to play through about 15% of the DVDs. Much too unreliable or short-lived to recommend. Too bad, because a number of its features are excellent.
- I've owned this player for 4+ years. I average 1 DVD a week and have been using this DVD player for the last 4 years regularly. It hasn't broken down nor given us any problems.
I'll be purchasing more Samsung products in the future. If only all other brands were this steady and reliable.

- I purchased this unit from Fry's for 149.99, and will be returning it in the morning. The manufacturer's specifications indicate it has Component (YPbPr) progressive output, but does not include the necessary cable to make that connection possible.
Most horribly, the LCD is specified as having 800x480 resolution, which is a 15:9 widescreen aspect ratio, but clearly, at a casual glance, it is not an 800x480 resolution LCD. I painstakingly measured the vertical resolution using a magnifying glass and ruler as 240 pixels high. This explains the crummy video image: it's only a 400x240 pixel screen. At 9 inches that's just horribly blocky. My unit also had one dead pixel in a prominent location near the center of the screen.
However, if you're looking for a budget-priced entry-level portable DVD player, and don't mind a low-resolution blocky display, this may be the unit for you. Just don't pay more than $150 for it.
Positives: Features out the wazoo for a low price.
Negatives: Lousy LCD.
- I like having the remote with this DVD player. I use it for workout DVD's so it is closer to me where I need it to be. I use it for meditation DVD's in a quiet place without other distractions. It's a great little machine with a big screen and a remote.

5 comments about Philips DVDR80 Progressive Scan DVD Player / Recorder.
- I am not one generally to anthropomorphize electronics, but after more than a year with this recorder I am left with the notion it has serious problems. I have spent more than 16 hours waiting for and talking to Philips customer service...they can read you the manual, but since you're reading this I assume that will be as much help to you as it has been to me. At this stage I know more than customer service about their machine. The interface is difficult and cumbersome I recommend avoiding the system. It periodically will not recognize DVD-R disks, although it always recognizes DVD-RW media. It randomly changes channels, stops recording in the middle of a program, etc.
Try Sony I hear their system is easier to use.
This is a shame because when it works it makes beautiful quality images.
- I wish I had seen some of the other reviews here before I bought mine! While it was under warranty, I had several minor issues that their useless customer service department could not help me resolve. In hind sight, I should have just returned it for a refund then. But I was at least able to record DVDs successfully. Many pre-recorded, i.e. purchased, movies would not play at all. Now that the warranty has expired, it will act as if it is recording, with no error messages, but when finished, that disk is recognized as "empty". Total piece of crap! I'll never buy another Philips product.
- I purchased Philips DVDR80 in October 2003. It worked fine for about 15 months, then stopped functioning properly. Would get "disc error" message, discs wouldn't finalize and became unreadable coasters. Was using Memorex dvd+r and +rw discs with no problem until this time. After the errors started, tried other disc brands (Maxell, Imation), and dvd lens cleaner.
Ended up contacting Philip's "Customer Care", went thru all their suggestions, firmware updates, etc. Authorized repair center said they were unable to fix it. I called Philips back, told them I didn't think paying $500 for a product that lasts just 3 months past the warranty was fair. I suggested they give me a partial refund for this obviously defective product, but representative basically told me to get lost. To be fair, his supervisor was more polite, but wasn't anymore helpful.
I've had good luck with Philips/Magnavox vcr's, so thought their dvd recorders would be comparable. Am writing this review few years after giving up on this product as it been sitting on my shelf as an expensive clock. However, Its going in garbage soon as have recently purchased a Panasonic recorder (hopefully it will last longer). Am not purchasing anymore Philips products until get over my anger, which may be awhile.
- All the lameness of this product has been well documented here. I just wanted to add one more negative star to the voting, and to Philips as a whole. Boooo!
- Like most people submitting reviews about the DVDR-80 from Philips on this site, I was a sucker and bought this lemon a few years ago. Also like everyone else, my recorder failed and I spent hours dealing with Philips (and getting nowhere). I downloaded the Firmware revisions and installed them according to the instructions, and even tried using the rest procedure to get back to the "Factory" status.... all failed.
After letting the recorder "rest" in it's original packaging for a full year, I tried to use it again last night. It was a "Hail, Mary" plan with the hope that it would forget all the bad words I said to it, and might start working properly again. HA !
This morning I figured out how to resolve the problems I've experienced over the past 4 or 5 years with this device, and managed to reduce my stress levels in the process. I packaged the recorder in it's original box, taking the time to coil up the power cord and wrap everything up in the protective foam and wrappers, then chucked the whole damn thing into a dumpster.
It wasn't a GREAT bargain, but I did get a nifty set of RCA plug A/V cables for $500.00. Thank you Philips, for all of your advanced technology and outstanding customer support... I hope you enjoy my money, because that's the last you'll EVER get from me. My $125.00 Panasonic DVD recorder has been running for 4 years now without a single glitch. Maybe the folks at Philips should invest in a Panasonic DVDR, just to see what a quality product is suppose to look and act like after the warranty expires.

5 comments about Apex PD-660S 6.5-Inch Portable DVD Player.
- I just want to warn you about this companies equipment. They don't stand behind it at all. So far I have owned 2 of their prodects and neither one has lasted 1 year. Unfortunately, their warentee is for 90 days. This Portable DVD players battery never worked (I brought 3 of them back before I got one that worked and that one stopped working after 40 days...and the batteries only warenteed for 30 days). This company does not stand behind their products and their customer service...well I guess they call it that...is useless. Trust me...don't buy anything from them. Save your money!!!
- I have the model before this one - the 650S. Hardly had any use on it before my husband passed away. When the grandchildren came to visit I thought, "Great, they can watch DVDs in this little player in the car on the way back home." WRONG. The battery was DEAD and wouldn't charge. As a matter of fact, the battery light would not come on that it was even trying to charge.
However, the unit still works with AC or with DC in the cigarette lighter. But that was not my intention. I first thought about sending it with one granddaughter who came to visit earlier and who would be flying home. "What a great idea to have her take it on the plane and have her mother mail it back to me." But I'm glad I didn't since it would not have worked for her.
Cute? Yes. Great size? Yes. Great product? No. Sorry, folks, thumbs down on this one if you want portability.

- Apex Digital products often fail within the first year. They have horrible customer service, false advertising, and fail to honor their warranties. Please check www.labbb.gov (Better Business Bureau) and search for Apex Digital to see the F rating the better business bureau has given them. Saving 10-15 dollars is not worth the hassle they cause.
- This is a cool little player - I've used it for over a year. My only complaint is that it doesn't actually display native DVD resolution, so on screen text in movies can be difficult to read. This thing will play just about any format of DVD except for DVD-RW (+RW works fine, though). DVD's with MP3's on them play well too.
When you charge the batter, you should not do it while hooked up to the player. If your battery doesn't work, you can calibrate it by hooking a 12 volt vehicle light bulb to the + and - terminals of the battery over night, and then charging it up to full (leave it plugged in for about 12 hours). As I used it my battery life went down, but calibrating it (as I mentioned above) got me back up to about 3 hours of life.
I've also used this attached to a TV using the S-Video, and I have used the option to connect my PS2 to it (very cool!)
- I took mine out west on a trip and the battery life was about 15 minutes (fully charged). I ran it off the power adapter and could not get through a full movie.
If your DVD/CD's have ANY imperfections this player won't play them. I finally got a brand new audio cd to play straight from the package, although it still skipped whenever you walked through the room.
Not recommended.

3 comments about PDVK-1 DVD player case (Koskin, Black).
- I bought this for my Toshiba SDP2000 Portable DVD Player. And it fits--but just barely. You won't be able to carry many DVD's, but you can fit the player, battery, IR remote, and all cords. I also managed to cram in a JENSEN audio-cassette adaptor to play through cassette deck (vehicle use).
It exactly fit my needs--and it looks nice, too! Good construction quality, as well.
- This is a very nice looking case and has lots of pockets however it does not hold the Apex portable DVD player.
- This had all the dvd pouches and storage space needed for a players around 6" or less. But more than that, everything just wont fit (for me it was my headphones). Even for a small player, the case would still budge. My overall sugestion would to try to find a bigger case, or I heard that you could just try to get a breifcase.

I wish I could give it zero stars. What a waste of money.
- This DVD player plays a fuzzy picture, with lines going through it... At least ours does.
