  1. 6 months old and I have an over-priced dvd player only.

Yeah, sure... I technically could record with it, but it's so cranky and annoying that I don't bother. I'm actively looking for another option. Too bad I didn't give it a full check-out during the initial return period. :-(

The remote - all the buttons feel much the same, but that's OK as the deck will not recognize anything you push unless you hold the remote out in just the right place to get the signal through that annoying mirrored front panel.

User interface - mildly disjointed. I could live with that.. if... and only if... it would actually respond as you do anything in record or edit mode. You push a button, wait a second to see if you had the remote in just the right spot for the system to see it, and then it will consider doing what you tell it to.

Media - I had heard that this unit was a bit particular on the media it will accept. That's an understatement. It does't seem to like anything faster than 4x. Now you have to find 4x it likes. Ridata is supposed to be pretty good - I bought 100 4x printables. They don't work. In fact, most of the media I bought to test doesn't work. Heck - even finding 4x media is becoming a challenge anymore.

There are several newer Go Video models listed here. Too bad - After this experience Go Video is on my Don't Buy, Take to the range for 12g percussive therapy" list. If it didn't actually play disks I'd have taken a sledgehammer to it before its fourth month in my house. As it is, I'll just use it as a player and let the bitterness for the wasted investment in Go Video grow.

I hear the Panasonic EMR ES10K actual does what it's advertised to do..... Hmmmm.... maybe.....

  2. I AGREE WITH ALL THE REVIEWS PREVIOUS SAID OF THIS PRODUCT. POOR PRODUCT. I BOUGHT ONE UNIT SEND IT BACK AFTER 3DAYS WAS REPLACE WITH A REFURBISH ( FRONT PANEL WAS BANG UP). AFTER THE WARRANTY RAN OUT IT WOULD NOT ACCEPT 27 OUT 30 DISC AT ALL. EITHER IT SAID NO DISC OR AN ERROR MESSAGE SHOW UP. I ALSO HAD DIFFICULTY RECORDING A TV SHOW IT SHOW THAT IT WAS RECORDING BUT THEN WHEN I WAS ABLE TO CHECK THE DISC IT WAS STILL EMPTY. I CALLED THE TECH TWICE & WAS DISCONNECT BOTH TIMES. IT WILL PLAY ANY RECORDED DISC SO I QUESS I WILL KEEP IT AS A SPARE PLAYER. I SINCE THEN BOUGHT A DIFFERENT BRAND & HAVE HAD THIS UNIT FOR 2WKS WITH NO PROBLEMS YET. ALSO HAS A 1 YEAR WARRANTY ON PARTS & LABOR. SO PLEASE DO NOT BUY GO VIDIO RECORDERS IT'S NOT WORTH THE TIME OR MONEY.

  3. I purchased the R6530 a year and a half ago. I was happy at first. The unit made fewer coasters than my computer dvd burner did. I stocked up on blank DVD+R media at Christmas when merchants drop the prices to get you in the door...different brands at different recording speeds. I was in the middle of a cake box of Memorex 4x DVD+R media when the unit decided it could no longer recognize my blank disk. I tried disks by Fuji, Imation, Ridata, and none of them worked. I called Go Video and told them of my problem and they said that since I was in the warranty period they would send me a new unit if I would send them $75 dollars. I did and they did. The new unit would not recognize my disk either. I again called Go Video and they said another new unit was on the way, just ship that one back. I packaged it up and sent them several disk that had failed to work in the unit along with a letter describing my difficulties. I hoped they would develop a firm ware upgrade for the unit. The have not.

I have found the unit will only work with high grade 2.4x DVD+R media (although their tech support says 4x media is compatible). Unfortunately, you can't find media that slow anymore unless it's Dual Layer. I've got about 4 blank disk left and then I guess this unit will become a paper weight. I would feel guilty if I even gave it away to a stranger. I am dumbfounded that no one at their technical support seems aware of this problem and there is no effort on their part to find a way to make higher speed blank disk compatible with this recorder.
    Buyer Beware of this unit!

  4. GoVideo was a pioneer in the DVD Recorder industry and I've owned other GoVideo equipment that have worked well for years. This unit has most of the features I wanted, though the manual was a bit tough to decipher. If you're willing to put the time into reading it though, I don't think you'll be disappointed. This is one of the two brands of DVD Recorders I'd give top ratings to.

  5. Sometimes works only with DVD+RW, never reuse the same DVD+RW are only for one use

5 comments about LG RC797T Tunerless 1080i Upconverting DVD Recorder VCR Combo.
  1. We bought this just before Christmas, and installed it in hopes of being able to watch DVDs, Videos, and record our old VHS tapes onto DVD's for the future.

First, this is unnecessarily complicated to operate, and not at all intuitive. I have DVD players, and VHS recorders all over the place, and have no trouble managing them, but this thing needs the handbook in your lap to operate it. It should be called a decoder, not a handbook.

Second, I was stunned by the slow speed of changing channels. You type in channel 10, the screen goes blank for a few seconds, then it goes to channel 10. OK, I figured it's because of the capability of doing hundreds of channels, so it has to wait to see if I'm gonna add another digit, but no - It does the blank screen, and several second lag for every change, even when you just press up, to scroll through the channels. At this rate, it will take a week to scroll through all the channels.

It plays VHS tapes OK, and it records VHS OK.

DVD records everything as digitized boxes - like an overblown photo, in the 6 hr. record mode. At 4 hrs, it's mostly OK, but anything moving fast will look pixelated/boxy, too. It started out playing OK, but soon started doing the abrupt stop, then boxy fade to the next scene, that seems to be a problem with all DVD's that I've seen. (Not many).

The DVD's I recorded in this would not play in my other DVD player, either, even after I finalized it.

Now, less than one week after hooking it up, I hit play, and after 30 seconds it seized up, and just got stuck on the DVD. I tried everything to free it up, and even tried to eject it, but no luck. It would not let me switch to VCR, and it would not power down, either, so it basically had my TV held captive, with one frame permanently stuck on the screen, and no way out. We messed with it for 15+ minutes to try to get it to let go, but were ultimately forced to disconnect it.

Needless to say, I will be returning it tomorrow. To the Store, NOT to LG.

  2. Bad first. The DVD player freezes up on a fairly regular basis, in most cases with rented DVD's. This requires you to get up and manually hold the power button to reset the machine. After resetting you may get lucky and the machine may resume playing from the previous DVD location. However, the result many times is a message informing the user that the disk cannot be read or there is no disk. I then have to play the disk in another player to finish watching the DVD.
Good. I originally purchased this unit to transfer VHS recordings (home movies) to DVD. The machine performs this function flawlessly. I have created several DVD's from VHS and from digital camcorders with no problems.

  3. This product has one advantage: a built in tuner that allows you to watch one show and record another, so long as you have your cable feed split. One coaxial cable must go to the LG, the other to the TV. Then, you run RCA cables from the LG Outputs to the TV Inputs so you can play a VCR or DVD (the LG will send the signals through those RCA cables to the TV).

The downside of this feature is that there is NO way to see which channel it is tuned to other than putting it on your TV monitor. So, if you're watching channel 9, and you want to record channel 6, you MUST stop watching channel 9 and put the LG on your TV monitor to see which channel you are going to record. In every other VCR I have ever owned, the clock on the display would change to the channel when you were switching channels, then change back to a clock after about 5 seconds. Not so with this clunker. They feel it is more important for you to know what time it is than what channel you just surfed to. I called them and they said it's true, you cannot see the channel on the LCD display, only the clock. "But I have a clock already" I replied. "Now you have two!" was their response. No, now I have one again because this thing went back to the store within one week (see below).

The major problem is, well, it doesn't work. It constantly goes blank when I'm watching a TV show, playing a VCR, and most frequently occurs with DVD's. All Blocksbuster DVD's simply won't run on this piece of junk. They start, but then go grey, then the picture reappears, and repeats over and over. For what I paid I would expect it to work for at least 3 days.

So the jury's out: this is a poorly made item with not so great features, that doesn't merit consideration. It has many other programming flaws (for instance when you push DISPLAY, it appears on screen for about 3 seconds, then disappears, so you cannot fast forward to a certain spot without REPEATEDLY pressing display) that I would not recommend this to anybody but the garbage man (where all junk belongs).

LG: Life is Good? I hardly think so. It will be a long time before I purchase another LG product. There's a reason they constantly get rated behind Sony, Philips and Panasonic, and I just found out why.

(I would have given it one star, but the built in tuner feature made it two.)

  4. Another 'typo' on amazon's part... This model does have a tuner, for all the good it will do you! Bought mine when they were newer on the market, and paid $300.00 for it.

It lasted about 6 months before I started experiencing problems with it reading DVD's! Also, some part on the faceplate trim began just separating from the assembly. I viewed about a couple VHS tapes through it, never even got the chance to learn the complicated instructions on doing any DVD recording... it's basically a piece of cheap, but 'expensive' junk! Wish I could have given it '0' stars...

What's even worse, is that LG's warranty sucks as well! Labor 90 days, parts, 1 year.

After contacting LG, they sent a shipping label to return it back to them for repair, but at an additional cost of $69.00 for the repair, since the labor warranty had expired.

Considering I only got about 6 months use out of it, and it seemed to be falling apart just sitting in my stereo rack, I demanded either a new replacement unit, or after paying the $69.00 repair charge, a 'fresh' new warranty, as if was new after the $69.00 repair. They refused and returned it back to me unrepaired.

LG only warranties their repairs for 30 days, and I wasn't about to put out $69.00 on top of the $300.00 that I already spent, on an obvious 'lemon', that wasn't right from the beginning!

No doubt sometime after that 30 day repair warranty expired, and my one year parts warranty expired, I can only see this unit giving me problems again! And at that point, having $369.00 invested in it, and needing even more repairs!

I got 5 years use out of my previous DVD unit! That was a Denon, and gave me great service. Compare that to about 6 months, out of an LG product, and I'll never trust them again!

Most would not believe all the time it takes to install and wire this unit into a system, eliminating, a VHS player, with the main television tuner in it, and the previous DVD player.

Then after the problems began, pull this out to send for repair, needing to rewire in a VHS player just to have a television tuner, and a cheap $40.00 'Wal-Mart special' DVD player to get everything working again, and just so one can watch basic television or a movie.

These 'combo' units are 'junk'! A television tuner, a VHS player/recorder, and a DVD player/recorder all in one, and if one part goes bad, you might as well say it's all bad, as you loose 'everything' by pulling it out!

After my experience with this LG product, I can honestly say that I will never buy another LG product again! Between a poorly manufactured product, and extremely 'rude' customer service, I have already walked away from an LG LCD computer monitor that was on sale, and went with another brand not on sale!

If I were to ever consider a similar product, I would go with the Panasonic. At least they offer a 1 year, 'parts and labor' warranty.

Do look at warranties offered! Got '3' years on that LCD computer monitor I purchased! So it wasn't on sale, but in the end well worth the extra money spent, over something with only a 1 year warranty, not to mention really bad customer service!

If LG doesn't resolve this, check back for a video review, where this LG will be run over by a semi dump truck!

  5. 5 months after I paid almost $300 for this piece of junk, it stopped finalizing DVDs. I called LG, and they told me I could send it back for repair under warranty. HOWEVER, I had to send them $69 just to look at it. Some warranty! AND, I had to have it boxed (tossed the original box) professionally, and take it to the Post Office with the fancy label they sent me. Sounds easy, unless you're handicapped and can't get around. Considering what I paid for it, plus the additional $69, I could have bought an HD TV set! Never, never again will I buy anthing LG, since my LG air conditioner (about 8 months old) just went poof!

  1. a DVD VR 320. And it has been in the shop twice already, Under warranty. Right now it is in New Jersey at Samsung's CVE repair center getting worked on for the exact problem that you are describing!
2nd time around. I found a link on the web, that said this was a problem related to OVER HEATING. What is happening is that the power supply overheats, you can feel the heat comming out of the back of the combo unit blowing, and then dust builds up, and then""" Its skips, freeze frames on you during play back, I even had to unplug the thing just to get it going again!... The Unit does what it is suppose to do, otherwise, this issue has really "Irritated me greatly".... I've not had it freeze during burning, but I have wondered about that? UM? I've e-mailed samsung on this problem to their main office, and to their actual repair center, and still no response from anyone! Its still sitting in New Jersey RIGHT NOW!
I've been without a machine for 2 months almost? This sucks! I paid almost close to $300.00 for it, and now I had to pay the 30.00 repair fee under warranty, and shipping cost the first time around. NOW, I have more invested in it, and don't even have it! I"m frustrated. Something is up! Again this is the
DVR-VR 320 Combo unit that does just about what the 325 does. I've had nothing but trouble with it!
:( sorry, samsung, I'm just tellin it like it is. You have the unit in your possession right now. What are you going to do about this situation on my hands?? Contact me! You have the unit.

Samsung is Stone Walling me right now... No player back yet,, No communication from them yet..

Watch out! I even called the Repair center in New Jersey, no reponse from them either!

  2. I put the firmware on this thing to fix the freeze problem. Now it does not work at all. The install died in the middle. I've tried to call Samsung, but after being on hold for several hours, I gave up. I've emailed service three times over two weeks, and have not gotten a response. I recently bought one of their LCD HDTVs, and I really like it. Sure hope it does not break because I don't think I could reach service to fix it. I WILL NEVER BUY A SAMSUNG PRODUCT AGAIN!!!!!

  3. I just want to echo some of the other reviews in that if you attempt to update the firmware it will destroy the machine. Mine locked up and would not open the DVD drawer after failing the update. I just wish I could rescue all the recordings that I have made with it but had not yet finalized. Any solutions?

  4. I know that the freezing problem and the problem of firmware updates completely hosing this device have been numerously mentioned, but I thought I'd add my name to the list. Mine is also now nothing but a vcr as the dvd tray won't open after a firmare update.

I also wanted to mention the poor DVD compatibility. I tried 5 different brands of DVDs (all DVD-R) before finding one this thing would take. Even then, it would quite often record for about 5 seconds, then freeze and you had to power the unit off and on. (the reason for me attempting the failed firmware update). I had to do this several times before the thing would finally keep recording.

Another annoyance was the fact that the title of the DVD (what you see in windows explorer) when you stick it in your computer was always SAMSUNG DVD. Why bother going through the painstaking process of naming the disc with the remote? I couldn't ever figure out anywhere that name was actually used.

Like other reviewers, I also found it annoying how long it took the device to recognize a DVD (and even MUCH longer for it to recognize a blank DVD-R). Seriously, I'd put the DVD in, THEN start popping the popcorn and hope that it would be playing by the time I got back.

Samsung also only ever published one firmware update, which even if you do get it to work, doesn't seem to fix anything. This device should have never made it to market. I will definitely be VERY wary of Samsung products in the future.

  5. This is one of the most regrettable purchases I've ever made. After working fine for about 6 months, little 'quirks' began creeping into its operation, until becoming constant: sound/video don't sync - leaving you with a recording seeming to be a badly dubbed film; unit regularly freezes completely, requiring disconnection of power to simply be able to turn it on or off; DVD recording will abruptly stop - even with the best of media (new OR proven); I feel badly about dumping the thing because it was a (then-) well-researched surprise gift purchase my wife made for me and at the time, it was highly rated. Peoples' reviews have changed, and I'm here to warn you as well: DO NOT BUY THIS MISERABLE PIECE OF GARBAGE. I will NEVER buy another Samsung ANYTHING again.

5 comments about RCA DRC8052N DVD Recorder.
  1. I am not quite sure why so many negative reviews have come up for this recorder. My experience has been fairly well painless. While I do not have a Hi Def television yet, I have found it interesting/nice that this device converts between the inputs. For example, an RCA video input would be output as S-Video as long as I have the S-Video cable connected as the output path. No swapping inputs on the television! In the home theater receivers I have seen, this functionality would simplify things a great deal. I use my RCA drc8052N DVD Recorder to run analog signal devices in, and receive digital signals out. The conversions are clean and the audio and video I get are more than acceptable.

DVD recording has gone off without a hitch. Recording old home movies to DVD from VHS has gone very well and has allowed me to subsequently pull that movie data into the PC for editing and compiling home movie DVD's although this step is really a hobby for me and is not necessary. The menu editing in the RCA DCR8052N, while tedious, certainly is adequate.

I purchased my unit ahead of the Christmas season last year for less than $100 at a local retailer and have not had a minute's trouble. I also must note on the heat issue that my cabinet is not ideal for this type of equipment. The heat within the cabinet can seem quite high, but this machine and my other devices have performed very well. I do periodically clean my electronic equipment by blowing it out and ensuring dust doesn't have a chance to build up, but this is a habit of mine. Our PS2 will stop working due to dust build-up if I don't keep it cleaned out, for instance.

The interface for operating this system is complex but not gratuitously so. A review of the documentation prior to operation should be enough for most folks to be able to take advantage of most of it's features.

At a minimum, this device is far superior to it's 2 star average. 4 stars is a conservative representation of it's overall value.

  2. The unit I received was not working properly so returned it to the supplier who was very quick to get necessary information to me for the prepaid return.

  3. And yet another DVD recorder that's woeful. Right off the bat, the HDMI output doesn't work. Why? Because it defaults to 480i of all things (not in the manual) and at least for me NONE of my HD TV's support that, they only go "down" to 480p. So you hook up an alternate video output so you can see what you're doing on the menu, only to find that the HDMI setting isn't even in the menu... it's got it's own button! The menuing system is very unintuitive, horrible really. The DVD is considered an input, so to see what's on the DVD you have to hit the input button, and go select the DVD icon itself (right next to AV1, etc). The menuing system is very difficult to navigate, but on the positive side there's a lot of features there -- like to be able to preview each title and insert chapter stops, and there's some nice editing features (combining titles/chapters, etc). The remote control is very cheap, unlike the unit itself which has a very nice appearence with the piano black finish and chrome accents. I had no compatibility problems with my other players. One other thing, while recording, the responsiveness of the unit when stopping/pausing is sluggish. Overall a decent player for the money.

  4. This unit may not be the best but from my experience, it also may not be the worst. I only use it for time shifting and archiving, and not as a cable receiver as some may. I use it in conjunction with my Sat receiver. The question may be askewd if Blu-ray is better. Without a doubt....yes. At this time neither format offers an HDMI Input so at best a standard def recording is all we will get. The first 8052 I purchased in 12-2006 has not given me any problems thus far and for the price paid, I think it works fine for the purpose intended.

  5. I have been a dedicated RCA user for over 20 years!! Before this product I had a RCA VCR that lasted over 20 years before it died!! My wife has a VCR that is over 25 years old!!! It still works like new!! As for this DVD player, I have had it for over a year and it works fantastic!! I understand the negative reviews on this product, nothing is perfect!! It would be nice to see somemore positive feedback on this product!!! I imagine there is alot out there!! I personally think it is a great product for the price!!

  1. I bought this Sony unit thinking like everyone else that with the name came quality. Not this time. I've had it for 2 years and have struggled with it the entire time. DVD's freeze up during play, and to keep the remote working I have to take out a battery and put it back in. Since I use this remote for my Sony tv it's twice as frustrating. I don't even know where the battery cover is anymore. Bottom line, I'll never buy Sony without first shopping around and reading the reviews.

  2. This is a nice player...but you cannot watch Sony movies on it. Their own ARccOS DVD copy protection causes this player to think that there are bad sectors on it. The disc will attempt to load and then lock up your player making it very hard to even get the disc out.

  3. I bought this unit a few years back and now am in the market for a DVD Read/write combo unit, so I decided to see how well I did before when purchasing this unit. After reading most of the reviews, it is apparent to me that you can either get 1 of 3 units when you purchase. A piece of junk, and unreliable problematic one, or one that just hasn't shown any issues yet. I can say that all of the negative reviews are correct. I have seen pixelation, freezes, not all DVD's can be read (store-bought ones) and now recently grey and white static screens occuring from time to time during viewing. I have been one of the lucky ones, but now it seems that poor quality has finally caught up to me. Do yourself a favor and pass this one, because it will fail on you someday, and once it does, it seems to get worse fast. 2 reccomended units would be Panasonic and OPPO.

  4. Here is a good one. My dvd/vcr worked flawlessly for almost 3 years. The dvd had zero issues.... until now. It seems every dvd you put into the unit freezes and stops. The sound also cuts out. My belief is after having some success with this unit and comparing that to the reviews here is that you should not take a chance on buying it. Just not worth the gamble for the price!

  5. I should've read all of the reviews as well before making a purchase. The product was GRRRRRREAT when I first purchased it a year ago...Now, I will not play ANY CD OR DVD. I've even used discs right out of the package. I've grown up on Sony products and I am disappointed that they produced such a poor quality product at such a high price. I do not recommend that anyone purchase this unit.

  1. ... it's not a multi-region player. Well, at least mine isn't. I've tried the much touted "insert region2 DVD, turn off the player, wait 30 secs, push STAND BY and FF simultanously" approach, but nothing. The player still spits out my region2 DVD in disgust, saying it's the wrong region.

Now what could I possibly be doing wrong? Did I simply fall for a few fake reviews and order the wrong device (mine is the DV-393-S model) ?

Any help in this matter would be much appreciated.

    Kindly,

    Ulf

  2. I am so disappointed with this product! It claimed to be a region free dvd player, but IS NOT! I already have a dvd player, so I was only interested in the region free capabilities, and it has none. I also cannot get the seller to respond and have thus far been unable to return it.

  3. This DVD player worked fine but it is NOT, as some of the comments suggest, region-free, nor can you make it region free (legally). My friends and I did some research and apparently if the DVD player is already region 2 or if it was made before a certain year it might be able to make it region free, or if you "flash" the DVD player--thereby editing its internal workings-- you could also make it region free (or render it completely useless). Basically, the DVD player is not intended by the company to be region free and so unless you want to go through the frustrating task of trying to figure out how to make it region free, I would suggest getting a DVD player that actually is region free. I got this as a gift for someone and it was quite disappointing to have the region 2 DVDs not work on it. I actually ended up returning it and getting a Philips DVP 5140 Multi System All Region Code Free DVD player. That DVD player played the region 2 DVDs right away with no hassle. Again, this DVD player works fine; it's just not region free, so don't get it for that reason unless you're some sort of technical genius.

  4. I always knew that Pioneer brand products were excellent quality; however, I have never purchased a Pioneer product before now because their products are usually very expensive.

I purchased this DVD player and am very pleased as the price was reasonable and the quality is the best I have ever seen.

I highly recommend this product as I know that it will stand the test of time compared to other brands.

  5. I bought this item based on the reviews saying that it would be region free. It just keeps spitting my PAL DVDS out. Plays US fine. Any suggestions?

  1. This is a great player. It comes with a case, features 180 degrees adjustable viewing angle. It also comes with all the cords that are needed to use the player. It comes with a remote, ear-buds. YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH THIS PLAYER.

  2. I bought a Protron / Spectron unit at my local Toys R Us store and thought it would be a good idea to use on a family journey to Disney World. I thought it would keep the kids quiet on our long journey but boy was I wrong. All the kids keep saying was daddy turn it up ! The volume was up all the way but it was barely a whisper plus you could hear the chattering of the unit and all times. Very light and cheap. I wish I would have read other reviews on this product before I purchased one. I did take it back with no problems after our trip but learned a lesson. Stay away from this brand and save your self a real headache.

  3. We bought ours around Easter of 2007. We left it in the box until our summer vacation. The second time we went to use it on the same trip (the third movie)the screen did not work. The backlight went out on the LCD screen. So, to make a long story short, just stay away! I would not even give it 1 star but that was the lowest I could go with the scale provided. :-)

  4. I don't understand how these ever made it to market. They are cheaply made in China and they come with virtually NO SOUND. I am not kidding you. I thought it was a good deal since it came with a carrying case but I sure was wrong.
The only good review you will find on these units is from the poor sellers who bought a bunch of them and are trying to sell them as fast as they can before the word gets out that these players are defective !!!
And try to get Spectron's customer service to help you! That is a nightmare in itself!

  5. will not buy from the seller or this product, both are very hard to work with, battery did not charge up,try to get a replace from the seller they said I had to go to the manufature, went there took 2 months to get a new battery, and gusee what,it don't work ether,I try to get them to replace the player, they say it now out of werranty, and I have to go back to the seller and they say the same thing, they only have a 30 replayment,if you want a credit, you have to pay for shipping back to them,it was have the cost of the player to ship it back, now I have a player that doesn't work on the battery,it only works when it's plug into house curant or the car battery,I'm know a very happy camper with this seller or the manufacture,

5 comments about Toshiba SD-P1850 Portable DVD Player with 8-Inch Widescreen LCD.
  1. We bought the Toshiba 1850 portable dvd player to play videos for my daughter. Many of the videos are a collection of Barney videos we own that I converted. This DVD player would not play any of them. We recorded them on a different disk and a different format and it still would not play our disks. (I sent back this product and went to get another one) I went to a nearby electronics store to purchase another one and took the DVDs I wanted to play with me to be certain they would work. Guess what? Every portable DVD player there played my home movies, the collections AND some of them even played the DivX even though they didn't advertise it. I tried the Toshiba 1900 portable DVD player and had the same exact results as I did with the 1850. I would not recommend this at all if you intend on playing home movies or movies you have converted from VHS.

  2. Item was marked down more than 50% and couldn't find a scratch or blemish on it. Worked flawlessly. Fast delivery.

I purchased this item for its unique feature of providing ports for reading memory cards. Wanted to make a present to an elderly person who did not have a computer and wanted to look at JPGs from memory cards or CDs. Functionaly, this feature worked very well, but the JPGs displayed very poorly on the screen. I will have to go to a dedicated JPG display device, more expensive than this DVD player. And being able to play DVDs would have been nice for this elderly person.

Return was very simple and refund immediate.

Great product for the money, great service. Just didn't fit what I was looking for.

  3. So far we're really pleased with this player, and it's handled everything we've thrown at it.
    5 things could be better:

    1. If the screen would fully fold back;
    2. If there were a volume control on the remote;
    3. If it could be hacked to be region-free;
    4. If the battery would charge when the player were in use (needs to be switched off to charge);
    5. If the remote sensor were in a more accessible place (when you put the unit in a holder to strap to the back of a car seat, the sensor is covered so the remote doesn't work.)

None of these issues are deal-breakers - I highly recommend this unit at twice the price! (we paid $95 refurb)

  4. I searched and searched- and read every review before purchasing a portable DVD player for my kids to use on long trips.

I finally decided on this Toshiba, and we have not been disappointed. It is a sturdy, tough little machine, and the picture quality is great.

After a year's worth of use, I am happy to say it still works great, despite two toddlers' abuse and many trips.

I have 3 year-old boy and a 1 year-old girl who now use the machine almost daily. They would rather watch a movie on it than on our regular TV/DVD player.

My one year-old is especially "rough" with it-- dragging it around, dropping it, touching the laser mechanism, opening and shutting it, etc.... and it is handling it with no problems.

So, I highly recommend it-- the 4-hour battery is great, too. I feel like it is a solid machine.

  5. I purchased this item at the beginning of November 2006 and it is not working any more. First the remote went on the blink after about a year and now the dvd player itself has died.

So, I please note that with regular use it lasts about a year and a half. Something to think about for the price of USD 160.00
